Happy Women's History Month Levy. Today we're talking about a founder, widely recognized as one of the first self-made women millionaires in American history.
She didn't just build a product, she built a system that trained thousands of women to sell it. Every business you've ever admired, every door that opened a little easier because you were a woman with a vision. Every investor who didn't laugh you out of the room, that didn't happen by accident. Somebody built that before the internet, before venture Capital, before anyone was putting women on Forbes lists or calling them founders, they built in the middle of racism, sexism, and systems design specifically to make sure they failed.
And they built anyway with grit and strategy and a refusal to accept the ceiling that the world handed them. This mini series is called She Built This and it is my love letter and my challenge to every woman listening who is still playing smaller than she knows she wants to.
They gave us the foundation. Now it's our job to build the skyscraper.
Hey, hey, hey. You're listening to She's That Founder and I put together a special series called She Built This. And today you'll discover how Madam CJ Walker created a door-to-door sales training system that scaled her beauty empire without her being in every room.
You'll learn the specific elements of her system that are still being used by direct sales companies today, and what her model reveals about the one thing most founders skip when they try to scale.
Let's set the scene. It's 1906. Sarah Breedlove, the woman the world would come to know as Madam CJ Walker, is not just selling her haircare products door to door in Denver, Colorado.
She is thinking bigger, way bigger. She was not born into money. She was born into poverty, orphaned by age seven, widowed at age 20. A black woman in Jim Crow America where the law wasn't a gray area, it was a locked door with a sign on the front that said, not you. And still she built, not because the system helped her.
The system was designed to stop her, but she built despite it, and she built smart enough that it couldn't be ignored. So here's what I need you to understand about that, because this is the part that gets me every time. She had every legitimate excuse to stay small and she chose not to. She understood that her knowledge was her product and that she couldn't personally knock on every door in America.
So instead of trying to do it all herself, which is the thing I see so many of us doing right now, she created a system that let other women do it for her. And in doing so, she didn't just build a business, she built a movement.
So let's talk about the Walker system and what she actually built. And this is where it gets really interesting. Walker built what became known as the Walker Agent Network, a structured replicable training system for women to become independent sales representatives of her products.
By 1908, she and her husband had moved to Pittsburgh, opened a beauty parlor, and founded Lilia College to train hair culturists the backbone of that agent system. There was no LinkedIn learning, no Slack channel, no onboarding deck, no YouTube tutorials. She trained agents in person and through written instructions, she held conventions, the first one in 1917, where her agents came together to learn to be recognized and sharpened their skills.
Sound familiar? This is the precursor to your annual team retreat. That's your all hands, that's your culture building offsite. She built three things. Most founders are still missing today. First, a documented, repeatable process. Her agents weren't winging it. They had a methodology.
She also created performance incentives. Top agents were publicly recognized and financially rewarded, and finally, she built a community. Her agents didn't just sell for her, they belonged to something. So stay with me here because this is the part that really matters. At her peak Walker had an estimated tens of thousands of agents, most of them black women, at a time when the economic system was stacked against them legally and violently.
Madam CJ Walker didn't scale by working harder. She scaled by building a system that worked without her being in it in every step. So can I get an Amen? Because that is the CEO move. So I wanna get real with you for a second because this is where most business content about Mme.
Walker stops at the case study, at the framework, and then it moves on, and I'm not moving on. This woman built a scalable business in 1906 in America as a black woman under the full weight of a country that had recently been at war. Over whether people who look like her or even people, she navigated that.
She documented processes, built incentive structures, ran conventions, created the community. While racism wasn't just a vibe, it was federal policy. And here we are with our laptops and our AI tools and our Stripe accounts, and our right to own property and open bank accounts and sign a contract without a band's permission.
You're telling me that we can't get processes out of our heads and into a document? I know. I know SOPs are no fun, but surely we can do this because it's not a systems problem. It's a courage problem. It's a purpose problem. And I say that with love because I have it too. Madam CJ Walker didn't have the luxury of staying the bottleneck in her business, so she built a way out.
And here's the question I'd like us to sit with. What would you build if you operated with that same urgency? Not the urgency of stress, the urgency of purpose. So I'm inviting you to pick one thing in your business that only works because you do it.
Let's call it your walker opportunity. And yes, AI can help you start, talk through your process out loud. Let it draft the first version of an SOP or a training doc. Not to replace your judgment, but to finally get your judgment off the ceiling or outta your head and into a format that can scale beyond you.
That's not a shortcut. I would imagine that that's what Madam CJ Walker would have done in a heartbeat. So quick pause. Walker built her agent community before community platforms existed. We don't have that excuse.

Pick one thing in your business that currently only works because you're the one who has to do it, and that's where you start. And here's what I wanna leave you with. You are not building in a vacuum. You are standing on ground that somebody cleared for you at great personal cost. Honor that by building something worthy of it.
