What if the business model that built your company is the thing that breaks it?

In this Thursday edition of She’s That Founder, Dawn Andrews delivers a velvet-boot wake-up call for service-based female founders who are overwhelmed, overbooked, and wondering why AI still hasn’t made things easier.

The answer? Most founders are still treating AI like a productivity tool instead of a business model shift.

Dawn breaks down why shrinking margins, founder bottlenecks, and operational exhaustion are becoming bigger problems in consulting, coaching, marketing, legal, and advisory businesses, and why the founders winning right now are systemizing their expertise instead of selling more hours.

If your business still depends on you for every decision, deliverable, and fire drill… this episode is your sign that it’s time to lead differently.

172 | The Brutal Truth About AI, Leadership & Shrinking Margins for Female Founders And How To Fix It Before You Become the Bottleneck

In this episode, you'll discover the brutal truth about AI, leadership, and shrinking margins for female founders, and how to fix it before you become the bottleneck to your company's growth.

Hey, hey, hey. Welcome to She's That Founder, Thursday Edition. These are the quick rants, kick in the pants, velvet boot moments that represent me standing in the future, pulling you towards an even stronger, better, more powerful version of yourself with AI as your co-pilot.

Okay. I've been sitting on this one for a minute, and I cannot hold it in anymore. The service business model that built your company is quietly becoming the ceiling that caps it, and may even kill it. And I am not trying to be hyperbolic here.

Last month, I was on a call with a founder, brilliant woman, boutique consulting firm, seven years in, great reputation, great clients, rock solid referral sources, all the things, right?

And she was frustrated in a way that I recognized immediately because I have felt it, and I am feeling it too. Her team was underwater, her margins were shrinking, and she was logging more hours than she had in years. And she said, " Dawn, I do not understand. We have AI. I'm busier than ever. Why does it feel like I'm falling behind?"

And I took a breath and I said, " you feel this way because the market just had a whole conversation about what expert services should cost and what they should deliver, and you were not in that room." I don't know if this sounds familiar to you, but here is what is happening out there right now, and I am not gonna soften this because I respect you too much for that.

Generative AI is changing what clients expect. They are looking for speed. They are looking for personalization. Deliverables that used to take a team two weeks, some firms are turning them around in two days, some in two hours, and those firms are reporting higher margins and more capacity, not less.

So I want you to listen before you tell me that that's a tech thing and it doesn't apply to you.

Investors and accelerators who are picking winning businesses right now are explicitly prioritizing what they're calling AI-native business models in consulting firms, legal practices, marketing studios, HR advisory businesses. These are your sectors. This is real talk. Like, I'm ... I don't know, I feel like I'm ringing the alarm bell right now.

And I'm doing this because the next 12 to 24 months are when small female-founded service firms either become AI enhanced studios with serious pricing power, or they stay high touch, lower margin, and compete on hustle until the hustle runs out.

And I need you to hear that not as a threat. I'm inviting you to hear that as an invitation, because the women who move now, they don't just keep up, they set the standard that everyone else scrambles to meet in three years. And I'm calling this out now because if you're a service-based founder who has been an early adopter of AI, you probably have felt a little bit of a, like, exhale, right?

Like, some of the things that were taking up incredible amounts of your time have been able to be jobbed out in some way or lifted in some way by the use of AI, but you're probably not fully integrating it yet into your business. You're just popping in a process and getting a better version out, or having it put together decks for you, things like that.

No shade, like, that is super helpful. But this is a major shift. This is a relook at your entire business model, and looking at where agentic AI, can make a big difference here. So let's start first with the mindset shift that will change everything.

Right now, in your service-based business, your expertise is the product. Not true anymore. Your expertise packaged into a system, an AI optimized system, is now the product.

And stay with me here, because this is important. Most service businesses, especially the ones built by brilliant women who built everything on knowledge and relationships, are still, still trading hours for dollars or close to it.

Maybe you've automated a lot, systematized a lot, you know, you're able to deliver packages as opposed to hourly services. If a client has a challenge, you still show up, though. You still are the thinker, you're the advisor, and you're the delivery method, and then you do it again, and again, and again. And that model isn't wrong.

It built your business, but it has a ceiling. And what AI makes possible right now, what the early adopters are actually doing is taking the recurring, repeatable work that lives inside your head and packaging it, productizing it, systematizing it. So let me give you an example.

Let's say you're a compliance consultant. How you make your living right now, if it's just you, great. If it's you and a team, great. But right now, what's generally happening is you're doing quarterly reviews for your clients. They're ad hoc, they're bespoke, they're billed by the hour, and they're fully dependent upon you or your team showing up and doing the critical thinking.

And so you feel like that's your value, right? Your brain in the room, your compliance expertise in the room is what you're selling. Now, imagine that you take that same quarterly review process. You document your standards, your judgment calls, your frameworks, and you build it into an AI assisted a fixed scope product, an entry-level product.

Your client gets the same quality of thinking, but you deliver it in a fraction of the time, which means you can serve more clients. And here's the part that I really love. You can charge more. You can charge more because you are now offering a premium systematized service instead of hourly conversations.

So given that example, the story you're telling yourself might be, but my work is too nuanced for AI." Perhaps, but let me press you on it for a minute because I don't think that that's fully true. I think the actual issue is you haven't documented your standards yet.

And I say this with full love and zero judgment because I lived it. I'm living it right now as I'm building my own custom AI tools. The thing that forced me to get clear about those standards wasn't the technology.

It was that AI has absolutely zero room for interpretation. It required me to say explicitly what I meant to be able to build these tools, to take some of the load off, to increase my margins, and to create these AI products. And the process of making my standards visible has made me a much better leader.

It made me easier to work with. It made my team's output better.

Right? Amen, sister. So here's the reframe.

AI isn't the thing that's gonna kill your business. Undocumented expertise is the thing that's gonna kill your business If you don't start putting your arms around it now and integrating it with AI.

AI is just the force that makes the cost of leaving your thinking undocumented too high to ignore anymore. So everybody that's been trying to avoid those SOPs, girl, the time has come. The chickens have come home to roost .

Okay, let's land this plane. The playing field's shifting, and your clients already feel it.

Speed, personalization, deliverables, the bar has moved whether you've moved with it or not, and the firms that are winning right now are packaging their expertise into AI assisted fixed scope products instead of selling ad hoc hours. That's available to you immediately in your industry, at your size, starting now.

And the barrier isn't the technology, it's the undocumented standards living in your head. The moment you make your expertise explicit, your frameworks, your judgment, your process, you unlock a completely different level of scale and pricing power.

You are not behind, you are not too late, but you are at a decision point, and I have a feeling you didn't come this far to get lapped by someone with less expertise and a better system. And I am here for you, and I am here for it, and I've been playing around with this for the last three years, making it work and building it into my business and all of my service offerings.

So let me be your big sister and help you out with this.

So if this landed for you, I wanna give you something concrete to start with today.
