HLT # 160 - FILMMAKER MICHAEL MURPHY

Kevin Lynch Season 5 Episode 160

My guest today is Filmmaker (not singer/songwriter) Michael Murphy. Michael and his business partner/wife CIlista Eberle moved to the Island from their home in New Orleans after accepting a video production position with MSN - and taking the obligatory ferry ride across the Sound. I am wondering aloud here exactly how many of us did likewise in our initial discovery of Commodore Bill Bainbridge’s Salish Sea treasure? Michael is producer and director of UP FROM THE STREETS, the award-winning documentary we will be screening as Night One of our celebration of the music of New Orleans weekend on Friday, January 9 at 6:45.

“Up From The Streets®”:  a film about the culture of New Orleans thru the lens of music. From the drumming at Congo Square, to the explosion of musical styles that can still be heard on the streets of the city, the power of music to change lives is evident. The music here has always been a vital source of inspiration. Our music unites us, providing a deep spiritual connection to the city’s rich multi-cultural foundation that began 300 years ago. In many ways, the story of New Orleans is the story of America – a country founded by people searching for freedom; and escaping social injustice and cultural biases. The music of New Orleans became not only a celebration of life but also, at times, an expression of a want, need, and desire for freedom.

Adding value to the experience Michael and Cilista will be on-hand to intro and host a Q&A post screening. Standard priced tickets for the event can be found here. Please note that we have three ticket options available for the weekend spectacular; Friday night film and Q&A only, Saturday night Music with The Real LADY A only, or a discounted BOTH events option. All can be found here.

If you want to hear a story about dedication to one’s project and the courage necessary to ‘do whatever it takes’ to acquire funding, take a listen to Michael’s retelling of how he landed the big fish for the UP FROM THE STREET film.

Welcome to The Island Michael and Cilista and thank you for sharing your work, culture and art with us here at the Historic Lynwood, and the extended community. We are currently screening the UFTS trailer as a part of our pre-show entertainment, here is the link. Should you have questions about either night’s details, please call anytime at 206.451.4336, leave a comment, private or public at the FB link below or simply stop by the theatre at your convenience. We love to talk about movies and music. Or both.

Hope to see you on Jan 9&10. Ciao.

Kevin
