This trio of specials are a detailed look at: Man’s inhumanity to man (most timely), man’s endless capacity for change (uplifting) and man’s unique ability to place profit over people (utterly disgusting). We salute the sponsors, BIHS and BI Rotary, Bainbridge Island Rowing and Squeaky Wheels. The circle of artistic life works like this: Local sponsorship>Organizational management>Partnership with venue (us)>Community support (you). When all four of these elements come together EVERYBODY WINS.

LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL. In honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day, this student led FREE SCREENING of the Academy Award winning (Roberto Begnini, Best Actor) of 1999, is a powerful lesson in the power of love in a time of hate. Big thanks to BI Rotary for their grant to BIHS as led by Hannah Abrahms.

A MOST BEAUTIFUL THING. Sponsored and hosted by BAINBRIDGE ISLAND ROWING, this is the second most popular rowing film in America. Narrated by Common, this film chronicles the first African American high school rowing team in this country (made up of young men, many of whom were in rival gangs from the West Side of Chicago, coming together to row in the same boat). Tickets go on sale tomorrow.

BIKES vs CARS. SQUEAKY WHEELS hosts and sponsors this “pay what you can” event on Tuesday night, Jan 27 @ 6:45. A 90 min Swedish doc that looks at the world from two wheels. The bike is a great tool for change, but the powerful interests who gain from the POV (privately owned vehicle) invest billions each year on lobbying and advertising to protect bottoms, er, bottom lines. In a world of cars…ride a bike. SW Q&A follows. Here is the link to my podcast with Joe Edgell of Squeaky Wheels.

HAMNET. The ending is a moment of profound reconciliation between husband and wife without a single word being spoken between them. It's all done through looks and appreciation. Agnes comes to understand Will's grief and need to pour his heart out both as an actor and writer...and director of the play. When the Ghost tells Hamlet, "Remember me," he isn't just speaking to the character; Will is speaking to the memory of his son, and to Agnes in the audience. With the power of art as screen craft (or stagecraft in 1601), Will (Shakespeare) guarantees his son a place in history, as closure for his wife and a gift to humanity for perpetuity.

NEWS AND NOTABLES. Our seat sale is now officially in its home stretch. July 3 being the date of our 90th anniversary. There is still time to claim your seat and support all that we do under the ample umbrella of the BI Arts & Humanities Community. I refuse to second-guess my initial thinking that a thousand dollars for this noble effort is not a perfect amount that satisfies all the requirements - without a sliding scale.
