Shawn confesses his greatest worship challenge (sort of) as the guys run through the Lord's Prayer. Jesus knows lays out for us a beautiful pattern of prayer and just how simple it should be instead of the often clumsy attempts we make.

Stay in the Fight!

SPEAKER_01

All right, so it is June. You feeling the heat of the creamery yet? Oh my gosh, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

The rush of summer. The rush of summer. We had our busiest uh week since we've owned a place a few weeks ago. Oh wow. Yeah. Broke broke all kinds of you know our sales records.

SPEAKER_00

All kinds of sales records.

SPEAKER_03

Twelve months worth, yeah. Yeah. It was good. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

No, that's that's good. I would expect that from now till school starts that you guys would be fairly slammed.

SPEAKER_03

That that's that's usually the case. That's what it was last year. Uh we do feel the heat quite literally, too, because um our air conditioner guy is just kind of, you know. Hey, that's uh we love that guy. We love that guy. Shout out. That's right. That's right. Uh no, he he's actually trying to help us out because uh, you know, the place has been around a while. It's got some age. It's got a little age, it it leaks a little, and and we're and you know, when it's hot outside and it's even hotter in the kitchen, it uh it sucks some of the air out of the dining hall. And people don't like to eat ice. I mean, the ice cream's good, but they don't eat burgers at 83 degrees in the you know when you're so we're just working that out and people are great and they're patient, and you know, it's a hard mix because you want your burgers hot and you want your ice cream cold.

SPEAKER_01

You want your fries hot, you want your customers cold, you know. That's that's a tough bit in a in a small space, really. It's not yeah. The magic one built around the creamery, yeah. Yes, it's just that's a hard thing though, because you you don't have like massive amounts of space there.

SPEAKER_03

And then every machine that's working to keep something cold is putting off heat. Putting off heat. Yeah. It's like it's like you're fighting against yourself.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. One step forward. Yeah, that's exactly it.

SPEAKER_03

But uh the good news is the bills are paid and and people have good reports and you know, enjoy coming to eat there. So one scoop forward, two steps back. Oh, yeah, I like it. I like it.

SPEAKER_01

One small scoop for mankind. I'm full of them or full of it today.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's good. Ah, man. How about you? You uh you made a trip to Texas, went to visiting a little family camping. Camping, which I always applaud people who camp anytime that's not winter or fall.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's not my preference um at all unless you're right near a really great water source. Yeah, it makes sense. Which we weren't, but uh And you and y'all weren't glamping like people who are V it. You you were in a tent. No, yeah, we were in a tent. Yeah. But it's it's like I was telling you, the tent is primarily mesh. So a little breeze. A little breeze coming through there, and we're in the hill country, so there is a little bit of a breeze out there. And if you know anything about that part of Texas, we were near Fredericksburg and Enchanted Rock, which Enchanted Rock is one of our families, like that's a pinnacle place as far as the the Birch uh family goes and Johnson. Um we used to go out there all the time with Sean's family. The cousins would it's it's about a mile to from the from the base to the to the uh top of of the rock there. But it's not you can do it if you're steady walking, you can do it in about 30 minutes. But it's just so cool when you get up there because the wind's blowing the whole time. Yeah. And and on a really, really windy day, it's it it's really whipping on the top, you know. So and there's a once you get onto the top, there's a cave you can go down into and and really honestly. But the uh the the was the Ark of the Covenant there? There are any hidden artifacts in the cave? I did there's there's a you know a couple of water bottles.

SPEAKER_03

Water bottles?

SPEAKER_01

I definitely found some batteries that people shed from their previous flashlight.

SPEAKER_03

Leave no tree, leave no trace behind it. I know, people don't get it, man. There's just take your junk, yeah. But for the most part, it's a that's good.

SPEAKER_01

It's a pretty good, but it's like a you gotta you gotta work to get through the cave. It's not a it's not an easy one as far as like you don't just walk through it.

SPEAKER_03

But um saying someone of my stature would be um hard pressed.

SPEAKER_01

It would be a little tougher for you than it was for me.

SPEAKER_03

Like that place you described to me in Arkansas that I begged off of. I was like, I don't think I'm gonna do that.

SPEAKER_01

Yep, yep, yep. But the problem would be honestly, it wouldn't be your circumference that would kill you as much as your height.

SPEAKER_03

Oh no, I I get it. I get it.

SPEAKER_01

It's just cave We're not cave people. Spelunking is not for the for the tall folk, you know. We're not we're not cave people. Yeah. Johnsons are they're they're good, they're good spelunkers. We're we're shorties, man. So uh on top of the mountain, not inside it. Yeah, but it's fun, man. I mean, and we we got to see some family, which is always always we don't see them very much anymore. Now that Shauna's parents aren't alive, we don't we don't everybody's half of them are in Texas, and then there's some in Georgia, and then there's us, and so it's there's no real good centralized meeting point, and and we just so we just don't really make it happen, but uh it was cool. It was cool to be out there. Uh so that was kind of fun. So yeah. And then we we tube the Guadalupe on the way back, which I've I've never actually done, which I told Shauna, I don't know how we came out here all these years, and I've never done that.

SPEAKER_03

But y'all are definitely water people too. Yeah, y'all like the canoe and tube and pack and all that stuff, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

We'd never have done it, so uh kind of kind of wild. This is kind of an easy float. Uh you know, it's like one of those places where people string up a bunch of tubes and you know, they have a cooler and some other substances, maybe. A flotilla of fun. Yeah, exactly. We came around this one point and there was like four or five wildlife officers standing there waiting to check people, you know. It's just like, yeah. I bet I bet on the stuff.

SPEAKER_03

Can you not can you not float under the influence?

SPEAKER_01

Well, I it's just I think they're checking underage stuff. Oh and I'm not sure what the uh wacky tobacky laws are in that in that county, you know. So yeah. And it's near it's near Texas State in the San Marcos.

SPEAKER_03

I I forget that people take fun to a new level. Yeah. It's like there's fun and then there's the slightly illegal fun.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And I was just thinking about those guys. I was like, man, I I know today your job's pretty easy, but I bet on some days your job sucks, man. I mean, because that we get a you know, just pastel of tubes coming through there.

SPEAKER_00

Like 30 people, you know, you gotta just got their ID, you know.

SPEAKER_01

I I know, it's just like nuts. So I just make sure they probably make sure nobody's dying and and and that people aren't being ridiculous, you know. But uh but it's funny too because they it's a that part of the river just does a big horseshoe and and there's a concert venue kind of in the not in the middle of it, but on one edge of it. It's pretty cool. But I can imagine when they've got a good a good concert that day, that that place is just thick with people. And then that would mean it would be thick with a lot of stuff. So anyway, but it was good. We had a we had a great trip, so I was glad to do it. That sounds good. So it uh now we're back for episode 95. 95, man. We're really gonna hit a hundred now.

SPEAKER_03

It feels like it's it's very I mean, and and most of uh, you know, I think only once or twice have we done an update episode. Like these are like actual, you know, for the most part, these are 95 episodes. We might have like two, I think in year two or three, we did a a couple of updates. What does that mean? Update episode. Like we just got on there and said, hey, you know, between between Advent and Easter, we kind of, you know, gave a 20-minute update on what's been happening, because we didn't have we went with we weeks without talking.

SPEAKER_01

Got it, got it.

SPEAKER_03

But the most part, we've been in the Word. Yeah. We've addressed um uh some topics that we think is you know, as men who are following God that we need to talk about. And it's been good.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So what you're saying is we have 95 episodes that are for the most part have good content. I think so.

SPEAKER_03

I I'm pleased.

SPEAKER_01

Little little nonsense.

SPEAKER_03

Look, look, I'm not hiding any of our content. Let's put it that way. You know, right. There's not lost up. Well, there are actually, I think there is a lost episode.

SPEAKER_01

A lost episode.

SPEAKER_03

But that's because I lost it somewhere else. It's actually lost. On a disc. Yeah. Uh yeah, anyways, that's another subject. Maybe I'll find that. I'll be like Bitcoin one day and I'll find it, you know.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah. The world's gonna go nuts when that happens, man.

SPEAKER_03

The lost episode. Uh episode 95, where uh Matthew 6, we're gonna get to the Lord's Prayer. Yes.

SPEAKER_01

And um How would you how how how how how many times do you think you said the Lord's Prayer in public? In public.

SPEAKER_03

Correctly?

SPEAKER_01

Well, I've got yeah.

SPEAKER_03

That that's I told you in prepare.

SPEAKER_01

Looking or not looking at it as well.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I have a confession. So um, and people who've been in worship with me have experienced this. Uh and and you know this. When you're leading worship, it's hard to stay focused on the one thing you're doing right then. Because because you know there's there's transitions, you're going to the next thing, you're trying to be present, but at the same time, you're like, what's next? Because because you don't want to take ten seconds, you know, to to get to the it's just all that dead time and people, you know, anyways, people squirrel so easily. And so there have been a few times where I on microphone have said the wrong words during the Lord's Prayer, leading the congregation. Have they followed suit? No, no, no, no. Usually my family gives me the eye, like, God, not again, Dad.

SPEAKER_01

They they get it right.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, so so for now, now, even though I know the Lord's Prayer, I have it in writing every time. Oh, dude, I totally do that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I'm preaching some because I don't do it every week like you do, too. Yeah. But but even if I did, I would still read it, man. Yeah. Only because I don't want to mess somebody up. Right. Because for some people, that is that's a time of prayer that's not that it's not important to me, but for some people that might be the one of the few times in the week where they're really pausing and and definitely and and that prayer is verbatim almost from scripture. Right. And so it's also it's a double whammy of them praying and them reciting scripture. I don't want to be the guy that messes that up for somebody just because I'm trying to have it memorized and we can do it.

SPEAKER_03

What do they call that? What do they call that when a pitcher gets the uh uh what do they call that that that weird thing where they kind of get the um they're nervous yips, the yips, the yips. I feel like because I've messed it up, I have the yips for the Lord's Prayer now. The yips. I feel like yeah, I feel like I'm just gonna mess it up again, you know. And I gotta find a trick like uh what's his name on Major League. I guess start thinking about uh lingerie or something. Oh yeah, yeah, that'll do it. That guy, that guy. I got the yips though, man. I'm afraid I'm gonna I'm gonna screw it up every time now because it happened several times. So that's that's my I feel better saying that.

SPEAKER_01

Ah, well, you know, there's there's things like that within within the preaching world that you do.

SPEAKER_03

Something as simple as the Lord's Prayer. Something you see which I have literally done, I don't know how many hundreds of times.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Well, yeah, I think you've probably got to be in the thousands. I could go with that over a thousand times. Especially if you count your your growing up years. Yeah, over a thousand times. I mean how many Sundays have you been in a Methodist church? That'll tell you right there how many times you've been in the Lord's Prayer.

SPEAKER_03

The Episcopal. Yeah. Yeah, there too.

SPEAKER_01

Times I went to the Catholic church with my buddies, you know.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, absolutely.

SPEAKER_01

The Our Father. You think you're the us, yeah, yeah, yeah. You think you're you you're in the you're in the thousands club, right? I think so, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, at 50 years old, that's that's that's only twenty times a year. Yeah. You know, I know I didn't do it as a as an infant, you know, but um But it'd be wouldn't it be fifty-two times a year? No, I'm just saying twenty times fifty is a thousand. Oh, twenty times. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, so I know I've easily done and think about all the years I was um at a church with more than one service.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah. You doubled up on those Sundays.

SPEAKER_01

You still can't say it right. Holy cow. Yeah. So what about the when you've been saying the Lord's Prayer, let's say it's not in uh Sunday morning where pretty much everybody's locked in to trespasses, right? Uh and you say it somewhere else. Are you st and then you've got a mixture of trespasses?

SPEAKER_03

No, I remember at a Baptist church, yeah. That was the way they did it there. And you know, I I think every Methodist church I've ever been in, it's trespasses.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I I've never been to one that does something different. And then uh I was at a Baptist church once and they said debts and debtors.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. That's the only place where the language really gets confused, right?

SPEAKER_03

I think so. And that's is that Luke that does that? Uh what's the difference?

SPEAKER_01

No, I'm I'm reading it out of Matthew and Matthew does debts. Mine says debts in Matthew.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah, it's Matthew, yeah, it's Matthew. Okay.

SPEAKER_01

At least it's not intimidational or something. Yeah, or debts. But even Matthew says, but delivers from the evil one, you know, where in most of the times you have to do it. Right, there's some small trips. Yeah, yeah. So I always joke with kids about what's the fastest you've ever said the Lord's prayer, because like actually Well, and then there's the part in our prayer in church for um Deliver us from evil for Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.

SPEAKER_03

Kingdom, power, and glory, yeah. Yeah. And and that's not I mean it is scriptural, but that's not a direct quote, you know. So But where you guys, you you were saying kids.

SPEAKER_01

How how fast you've ever said the Lord's prayer.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, athletes. Yeah. It's so insane. I'm like, what are y'all doing? Is the shot clock going off or something? Is it the play clock? The quarterback? Do we need to call timeout?

SPEAKER_01

Golly, just pause for some.

SPEAKER_03

Can we not take a breath? Yeah. Yeah. So what's interesting is um the uh the one-year Cooper, or maybe he played two years, uh, middle school football. Yeah. Uh, because he's the preacher's kid, he was one of the few people who knew the Lord's Prayer. Yeah. And so he got called on to leave the Lord's Prayer for the for the football team all the time. Oh, there you go.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, okay. What he'd say, I wonder how fast Cooper can say it. That's a great question. I don't know. We should get him on here. Let's go.

SPEAKER_03

So switch on the clock. Uh he you'll know this reference. Um couple of times he he would he would stop to pray for something, and I'd say, make it a good one strap. Strap, yeah. I'm glad you know that. That makes me feel better about you. He looked at me like, what? I said, You gotta watch the movie Who's Your Son?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Yes, he does need to watch that. Golly, dude. It's one of the We were talking about sports movies the other day, and I didn't even bring that up. We're talking about greatest sports movies. Really? And I didn't it didn't even came into mind, but it is. It's it's probably it's it's top five for me. Easy. Easy top five sports movie. Yeah, it could even be. I mean, it's in probably in my top thirty of just movies. Um it's good. Yeah, it's so good, man. Even I'm I'm trying to think Gene Hackman in general might might be one of my favorite uh role, you know, where he's you like that better than when he was Lex Luthor. You know, for the longest time, that's all I knew that guy was. I know, I know. And then I realized, oh, wait a minute, no, he's an actor. Yeah, he's that's Lex Luthor. Why is he coaching basketball? Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah. He's actually done some really great stuff.

SPEAKER_01

He's actually a really good actor. I just thought he was Lex Luthor. Yeah. It was terrible.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it was like a step backwards from me. Yeah, I guess. Yeah. You know, I love it. Like Harrison Ford, they asked him why he did certain movies. He's like, for the money, you know. He got paid.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, he did for sure. Um well the this is way off track from the Lord's Prayer, but they they probably said it maybe once. Um, the uh the replacements, that's the other good uh Gene Hackman coaching movie. Yes, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And probably one of the better sports movies, too. I like the replacements, yeah. I I I watch it whenever I Keanu Reeves, he he spin it, you know? Yeah, yeah. QB1. QB. Yeah, that's a good movie.

SPEAKER_01

All right. Well, enough of that nonsense, right? Quick saying. Any other any other movies though you can think of where the Lord's prayers uh used or any reference or anything in a weird way? Like off the top of my I didn't no, I didn't see that one coming.

SPEAKER_03

How about you? You got any movie references? No. I mean, it it's pretty common when in Catholic circles, you know, go, you know, confession, you know, people make their confession, it's part of their repentance, go and uh or their penance, you know, go say, you know, six Hail Marys and four our fathers.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I should have Googled uh Lord's Prayer in the movies just to see. It's not too late. If only we had a device where we quickly could do that. Oh we had access to the internet.

SPEAKER_03

Handheld computers, here we go. Um but no, I I can't I can't think of any cinematic moments where the Lord's Prayer was, you know. I know there are. I just I just can't think of them. Uh I have, you tell me, have have you had this experience? Have you ever just uh not in church prayed the Lord's Prayer in your your personal devotion time or prayer time?

SPEAKER_01

Not in a long time, but I have and I have thought through the idea of it as a pattern before I do that. I would say most of my prayers are are definitely more conversational and me asking God and then sitting in that and listening and but yeah, no, I I think the idea of of asking for forgiveness and and recognizing where that comes from, I think is is huge. Um broke Google is not working.

SPEAKER_03

No. Uh yeah, who cares? Uh I did, you know, I I one night and and it was um it was a night, it was a quiet night at the house, and and I actually we had a chair in our bedroom and I actually got on my knees, put my face in the and kind of down in the chair, and and prayed through that a couple of times. And it was a very it was a very good and then from there went into you know just talking and listening to the Lord. It was a very good night. Good night of prayer, good time of prayer, and and um and so occasionally I will go back to the Lord's Prayer as a way of of just saying, you know, uh my sc my thoughts are scattered or um or or maybe uh you know I'm trying to um just really lock in and it's like okay, why why reinvent the wheel? Yeah. Jesus said, you know. Yeah He gave us a pattern. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And I I do think when I was younger, like this is probably I would say college is when the lights came on for me. So I would think maybe even pre-college there were some times where I would end my like if I was praying at night, I would finish it with the Lord's Prayer, you know, by myself. But that's like that's like young Alan. That's like a long time ago. And I'm and probably honestly, because I didn't know what else to pray. You know, I mean, thank ye God for this, for this, for this, and then you know, our father who art in heaven, you know, and here we roll. So um I definitely would do that. You remember in in youth group how you used to do those kind of cheesy prayers for the meals and stuff?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, so um we the what time I had in youth group, uh, we didn't do that. Yeah. But I mean, is it then but but I would go to Camp Caney because I just went there a couple weeks last week. And uh they did the Superman. Uh oh, I I I look, if you're a kid, you like that, that's fine. I just didn't grow up doing that. I don't like it. Yeah, you know, I'm not a big fan of those, you know.

SPEAKER_01

But there was one that we used to do, it was like a very popular Sunday night youth group prayer for the kind of the meal, and I cannot even remember it now.

SPEAKER_03

But is that the one where you hold hands and you turn? Yeah, yeah. Gross.

SPEAKER_01

What is that? I haven't said it in the U.S.

SPEAKER_03

Look, it and I know there's probably somebody listening who's like, oh, that's such a core memory. I'm like, good for you.

SPEAKER_01

I I really it's like a song kind of thing, isn't it? Sort of like a tune or whatever.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I remember you hold and you cross hands. Yeah, you cross hands, so then you strike number one, we have to touch each other. Strike number two, we have this over-expression of emotion. Sean the introvert is out.

SPEAKER_01

I've I've I have two prayer things from youth group that I'll and then we'll then we'll really jump into this. So one was so we I seventh and eighth grade, I went to Asbury Methodist Church in Magnolia, Arkansas, and our youth group did that prayer that we neither one of us can think of right now. We would do it every Sunday night. And then I moved back to El Doredo, and one time I came back into town, it was like the return of Alan or whatever, you know, and I went to like a youth group event because they were doing like a hayride or something cool, you know. That I wanted to go to. And so, but they asked me to do the prayer because I was, you know, hadn't been around in a while or whatever. And I was like, and everybody got in the circle, and they probably might have did the whole hand cross thing, but I just kind of didn't know what to do. And so I was like, all right, we're going to say the Lord's Prayer. And then everybody was like, okay, I guess. You know, it was all weird, you know, because I didn't do the typical thing. And I wasn't trying to be different. I literally froze probably. I was in ninth grade and uh and and hadn't done anything remotely leadership-wise ever.

SPEAKER_03

And so I thought you're in the deep end and you just grabbed a handful of water and refused to go under.

SPEAKER_01

And I guess I guess the youth group that I was going to in El Dorado, I guess we didn't do that one. And I don't know. I just because like I said, I can't even remember it now. And then the other thing, this is my favorite youth group prayer story. This is when I was the youth minister or whatever, and we were praying on a Sunday night, and we had junior high and high school kids there. I think I've said this on the podcast before, but but as m West Texas, you know, farm guys or whatever, and the high school guys, they would give the junior high guys so much crap. And some of those junior high kids really deserved it because they were turds, man. Some of those boys. I mean, they were turds with legs and arms, but they were turds. And they but anyway, we're circling up for the prayer, and one of those big old seniors, he's got this one seventh or eighth grader next to him and still has his ball cap on. He's like, slaps him across the head. The cap goes flying halfway across the circle, you know. It's like, get your head off before we pray, son, or whatever.

SPEAKER_00

You know, just like, all right, I don't really know if that's like the spirit that Jesus wants us in. Better I hit him than his daddy. Yeah. Just like, come on, man.

SPEAKER_01

Oh gosh. Times like that. Because it's like, that wasn't done out of love. That was done out of this is a chance for me to hit this kid, you know.

SPEAKER_00

Show some respect.

SPEAKER_01

He's probably waiting for, he was probably waiting for his day to be a seat. He probably had a dip in his mouth too when he was saying it, you know. Come on, show some respect, boy. Show some respect. Oh, it's funny times. And I I'm pretty sure the kid who did that was a really good kid, too, but it's still what a what a funny moment, though, you know. So anyway, yeah, so Lord's prayer. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. No, that's not what you have in your version there. I know. I'm just putting that.

SPEAKER_03

That is the way it's seared into our brains. And and when we print it in the bulletin, our father in heaven. We print it with the traditional KJV. Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So Matthew NIV says this.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and so I just make that point because we're gonna switch back and forth. Yeah, yeah. Just get over it.

SPEAKER_01

We're we're in the same prayer. Yeah. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, is what it says. Yeah. Yeah. So the word what's the most controversial, not controversial, what's the most power-packed word in there? Uh I would say hallowed. Yeah. And it's the one the word that people would struggle the most with. What is hallowed? What are we talking about? Hallowed. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Hallowed be thy name.

SPEAKER_03

Hallowed. Yeah. As in the Hallow app of the I know. Yeah. You ever you ever looked at it?

SPEAKER_00

Shout out Jonathan Roomy and Mark Wahlberg.

SPEAKER_03

That's right. Hey, Courtney listens during an advent. Hey, dude. I get I got no qualms with that. Yeah, she listens during Advent uh or Lint. Lint. Uh she may have listened during Advent too, but she does like to. I was like, just just subscribe for the you know she likes to lint in devotionals and to listen to Marky Marks.

SPEAKER_01

Hey, uh funky bunch. Hey, side note, do you know who's gonna be on with Bear Grills in August? Oh, please say Jonathan Room. It is. Is it really?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I saw a thing today.

SPEAKER_03

That is so awesome. That is so awesome. Uh good stuff, good stuff, good stuff. There is a uh there's a referee who's doing a um uh uh what's that? Wells Fargo credit card commercial, bank card commercial, uh during the World Cup. Oh, yeah. And he looks like Bear Grill's little brother. Uh I mean he, you know, and I don't know his name. He's a he's in the in the soccer circles. He's a fellow uh fairly well-known referee, a British referee. Yeah. And I'm like, God, you could be Bear Grill's brother, you know.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, back to soccer. Whatever. Let's get back to the don't do that.

SPEAKER_00

Let's go the total opposite way and go back to the market.

SPEAKER_03

Enjoying the the World Cup. But anyways.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so hallow.

SPEAKER_03

What does it mean? Hallow. Uh special, holy, rever revered. Revered be your name. Revered. Yeah, revered be your name, you know. Uh exalted.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Do you can do you ever communicate that word as respect, but something way more kind of?

SPEAKER_03

I mean Yeah, yeah. So not like the respect I have for like um other human beings? A judge. A judge. Uh or or another human being, somebody of of prominence in our community, but a a reverent respect that goes, you know, that goes beyond a holy respect. Yeah, holy, yeah. Yeah, there's a spiritual connection there that, you know, I might respect you because you're uh a lawman or a first responder or something, but this is beyond that. This is uh uh this is more connected to the divine. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So not the same level of respect, right?

SPEAKER_03

No, no. And and what's interesting is uh, you know, we I I could kind of go off on this tangent is this whole idea of your name. You know, you go all the way back to um to the Exodus and and with Pharaoh, and and God says through Moses, like, look, Pharaoh, I I've I'm gonna I'm gonna make something out of you, I'm gonna let you, you know, so that people will know my name. I'm gonna use you and your your he didn't say this as commentary. I'm gonna use your obstinence, your rebellion, your refusal to acquiesce to my demands.

SPEAKER_00

And using lots of big words, eh, are we today, Sean? We're not but humble pirates.

SPEAKER_03

Parlay. Parlay. Relent? Is that better?

SPEAKER_00

That's fine.

SPEAKER_03

Go ahead. Sorry. I I forget. I forget. In Swartz, that means to, you know, to to to give into. Okay. Uh anyways, um, to you know, Pharaoh would not give in to God or or or or listen to him. And so God's like, I'm gonna make I'm gonna use you to make my name known to all the world. God throughout the Old Testament, and and as people read this, they're gonna I I think if they open their eyes to it, they'll see God wants his name known to everybody. Yeah. And and Jesus teaches us that it should be revered. Hallelujah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, and also when you say that about name, it just reminds me of when Moses says, Well, who do I tell them? That's right. Well, when all these people ask, Well, who who told you this stuff, Moses? You just pull this out of your butt. You know, you're out there in the desert, you know, working for your father-in-law, and all of a sudden you know this stuff, right? Where'd you get this info from? And and he says, Well, I am. Tell them I am who I am. You know, that's who sent you, you know. And you tell him I'm coming. Yeah. Exactly. You tell him I'm coming. Yes, that's in again, there's no other name there's yeah by which men are saved. There's no name greater. We're talking about V one. And so so obviously his name would be hallowed. And and kind of like too, like a remember how like in oh Harry Potter when it's like the he he who shall not be named? You don't want to talk about soccer, but we'll talk about Harry Potter. Okay, go ahead. I'm sorry. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, those are both very British, that's for sure. What am I doing? Um Yeah, no, I'm with you. Yeah. He who shall not be named. Yeah. Saying the name somehow intimates that there's power.

SPEAKER_01

There's power in there, right. And and I think that's so true um in in so many ways on on on so many levels. Right. And yeah, you tell them I'm coming, that's that's awesome. Yeah, but to speak a name in that way, it does. It it does invoke power. And yeah. So understanding that with with the God we serve and and who he is, and and I think too, like just him saying I am and his existence. And there's so much power. And so then to revere him by name in that way. So yeah, okay. I got it, man. I understand it now. Glad I could help. Okay, so uh kingdom. Kingdom. Yeah, this is uh I don't know, I don't want to say this is the big one, but but I do like this. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it in heaven. If you're at Maguire on Sunday mornings, you would say, Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, right? Correct, yes. That's how y'all say it. But but I do like that, right? Mm-hmm. That that we get we get that part in there of of Jesus. That's Sunday morning at 10 30, by the way. Of Jesus in the garden, not my will but yours. Yeah. And your kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. It's a consistent message of his.

SPEAKER_03

Right. Yeah. It's just this is uh in John talk, he says that in John several times as well about uh you know doing the will of the Father. And and so um Jesus was clear that he was not here on spring uh rumspringer. You you you tracking? No, I don't rumspringer? Oh, that that's when the Amish kind of go on their break. No, I didn't know you didn't know that one? I didn't know that term. Uh yeah, that's when they kind of they're they're granted the Amish uh youth are granted the period. Oh and they can go uh leave the community and come back without you know or without consequences. Without consequences. I get it. I get it. Yeah, Jesus just didn't on walkabout or or whatever on holiday, you know, you choose your term. Uh he's here on a mission. Yeah. And and he's he's here to do the will of the Father. Right.

SPEAKER_01

And I uh a much has been made about this, I feel like, in the last twenty years. I don't think I heard about it talked as much. I don't I think I heard it talked about as much, probably definitely not growing up, and then definitely not even in my initial years of of following Christ, but somewhere in there people started using this kingdom language and they started talking about this whole idea of on earth as it is in heaven, yeah. And grouping that up with Jesus saying, Behold, I'm making all things new, Revelation, and and understanding that we have a part to play in the work of the kingdom, and it's bringing heaven to earth. And then, like we've talked about a bunch from from Revelation, the new heaven and the new earth, you know, coming down, make making all things new, replacing this one, like heaven comes to earth, and then the idea of heaven coming to earth simply in the person of Jesus as well. So there's just so many layers to that on earth as it is in heaven. And I think Jesus wants us to pray that, and and this is the pattern of prayer that our prayers would be like that. So when when you're praying like that, it really changes, I think, what you pray for. Because your prayers become way less selfish if you pray in that kind of pattern. If you're praying for God's will to be done here, not my will, not what I want, but what you want. Let heaven come to earth. If that's what we're praying, that's a little different stuff than Lord, I've got a big test coming up, or my aunt has cancer, or you know, we're not pregnant yet, or you know, stuff like that.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and not that those are that's right. Jesus, God, Holy Spirit listens to all those, sure, cares, has compassion, uh, grieves when we grieve, celebrates, but at the same time, God is not going to be moved from his will just because we are emotional or or you know, pleading with him. Uh very interesting. So I mean kept Caney last week with middle school students, and one of them, uh, and this isn't anything you haven't heard, I'm sure, in your ministry, but one of them describes himself as an atheist because God let him down.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Those kids maybe 14, you know. And I'm like, dude, you don't even know like the hardships of life, you know. And and essentially, as we got to talking, um he prayed for somebody who was sick, and that person still died.

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_03

And and that's a story I've heard in my ministry numerous times. Yeah. Uh especially with young people, and I understand. I like where where do you put that pain and that that hurting and everything? But in the course of the week, he he was also over overwhelmed by the love of God, and so he he kind of came to the position of realizing that uh um he is a believer. And we celebrate that. And uh what's beautiful about it is I asked him, I said, okay, so so what changed? Did God change? You know? Right. Did he is he still the God who lets you down? And you give him another shot? Or did you change, you know? I set him up for that one, right? I mean and and he knew, and he knew. He's like, Yeah, I changed. I said, Great, okay. And and it was just an opportunity for us to talk about praying uh and knowing that we we bring valid, real prayers that God cares about, but that doesn't mean that his will is going to be supplanted because of our desires and our emotions. Yeah. Because he sees a lot more than we do, and he knows a lot more.

SPEAKER_01

So well, right, he knows the whole whole story, start to start to start to finish. Yeah. But but I think also, again, Jesus said, pray like this. That's right. And so this is our chance when we look at this model to go, okay, how do my prayers, how do my prayers need to be different? Like how do they how do I grow in my prayer life? Am I praying for God's will to be done? Uh and and so I just when we're praying for people, and that's why it's hard for me sometimes when you know, I'm like, I don't, I mean, I definitely I'll pray God bring your healing in in this person's life, in this family's life. But I don't say, but all but ultimately your will be done. Like if you don't want to do it, you know. I just think that God's healing can come in a in a person's life. You you leave it to be what it is. Yeah. Yeah, whether it whether it's however the healing needs to happen.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. And unexplained recovery or the uh uh effective use of medicine or or even death. Yeah. Which isn't really it's it's what's after death, right?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, because we're talking about heaven on earth and and and people coming to a greater understanding of who God is. Right. And that's the healing that we all need, right? Now in the moment, right, I'm gonna pray for peace, I'm gonna pray for healing, I'm gonna pray for God to work and move and and do what needs to be done, but I'm not gonna tell God what to do. And and and I'm I'm not I'm not for sure gonna like kind of put some kind of condition on him and say, Well, God, if you'll do this, you know, well then then I'm gonna believe, or I'll be stronger if you can bring healing in this situation. Negotiating with God? Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Because it's more like I just think about some of my lowest times, and and really what I'm praying is God, just just show me through this. You know, I mean, maybe you don't show me a way out, maybe you don't magically fix everything, but give me the strength to get through it, right? And I don't know. How's your will done in this situation too is another thing. Like like when you look at a circumstance and you're praying for people, like I okay, God, how does this how does your will come through here in this? Like, how does this happen? What do you want in this person's life? What do you want in this family's life?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, several months ago I had one of my leaders tell me that he was gonna pray intentionally, he was praying a little differently, you know, because we we'd gather before service and and stuff and we'd pray for certain people and outcomes. He said, you know, I I'm gonna pray a little differently. Uh I'm going to pray that um we accept what happens as God's will. Or or and maybe that's not a direct quote, but or that we he would pray for God's will to be done. Instead of saying, I pray that Aunt Susie comes through the serve uh the surgery just fine, you know, Lord, I pray that you you you provide the best of care and that you are with Aunt Susie and that that your will be done. And and I I I really appreciate him saying that because um I I think a lot of us are still very selfish in our prayers. I think so. And I don't say that in a negative way. I I think it's because we are we are somewhat scared. Uh we we love our loved ones and and we can't imagine praying it like it's a hard thing to say, Lord. Um, you know, I I I I pray for my dear loved one, even if it means you take them home. You know, it's a hard for us to think it's hard for uh you know for us to focus on or to acknowledge it. That's a reality. And so there's a little bit of denial there, maybe. Yeah, you know, so there's a lot of things going on there that's nuanced, and it's difficult uh to pray, I think, as Jesus said. Um but I I've actually incorporated lately uh yeah, I'll pray for healing because I think that's biblical as well. Uh but I'll say, But Lord, we also pray that we'd have the uh wisdom and the humility to accept your will.

SPEAKER_01

Right, sure. And and I think it that's I think too our prayers it shouldn't be like what am I trying to say? I had it on the tip of my tongue. Then I listened to you and I got off track. I enchanted you. I blamed you.

SPEAKER_03

Well, you think about it while I say this. Uh another part of this another part of this, your kingdom come, your will be done, is not only about us accepting, but it's also about the accomplishment. Like Jesus was about accomplishing the mission of God. Yeah. And and so that is uh almost like a like a uh uh self-fulfilling prophecy for us to say, okay, Lord, we're gonna be a part of this mission, you know, and I and I use that loosely. Uh but it you know, that's that's a way of us saying, Yeah, your will be done, Lord. Let's let's help make disciples. Let's uh let's let's be about showing forgiveness, let's let's practice generosity and holiness, and and your will be done is is about following the commands that we've been taught through Jesus.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. And so in in I wrote down what I've I remembered, so I wrote it down, but I knew that would help you. But but in you're so smart. But in response to what you just said, though, I do think understanding that the mission is what matters here. Yes, the kingdom is first and has to be in every situation. It's not like you don't love your family and you don't take care of your family, because they're part of the kingdom. Sure. They're part of the kingdom mission. Honest to goodness. I mean, you may be the greatest evangelical speaker ever on the planet, but that don't mean you're not supposed to be also a solid husband and dad. Right. And that does not mean that those people in your immediate circle aren't included in this whole mission of the kingdom. They absolutely 100% are. So but keep in in mind that that the kingdom, the the kingdom matters more than anything else. But there are people in the kingdom, so they matter too, right? So I but but I do think like that's exactly what Jesus was saying. He's like, hey, this isn't about your selfish desires here.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

This is about where this thing is headed and what we're trying to do. And you get into healing and then people still dying, and well, people are all gonna we're all gonna die anyway, you know, that kind of mindset, you know. And I'm not that's so harsh, but it's like the thing, well, you know, what happened to Lazarus later? Oh, well, guess what? He died. He died. Yeah, he was healed for the purposes of the kingdom. For the purposes of the kingdom, but he died later. I mean, he didn't stay alive, right?

SPEAKER_03

That that is uh, and I may have talked about this once in in our 94 previous episodes. Um one of the best episodes of Scrubs is when um the old lady doesn't want any any more treatments, and uh Dorian, you know, the young the young doctor, the lead uh Bambi. Yeah, right, right, you know, he he just can't accept it. He's like, why would she not want six more months or whatever else, you know? And uh Ted McGinley's uh character, the the what was his doctor name? I don't remember, but he's like, Hey, we got a hundred percent failure rate, like no one's getting out of here alive, yeah. We're just buying him a little more time, right? I was like, wow, that it that that that reality was I mean, that was hard for him to hear as a doctor, but it's such a great reminder. It's like we're not getting out of here live. Yeah. So so healing, what is healing? You know, that got me on a whole other tangent of teaching and stuff. But yeah, but I love I love the honesty of that because it's like a reminder. It's like, okay, what is what is real healing and health? What's it it's only found in the Lord. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And and it's like, well, what are you what are you praying to be healthy for? Yeah. Like what are you gonna do with your health? Yeah. Is what I think. Because okay. And that's where you get into the whole oh six more months or whatever. What about productivity of the kingdom and quality of life and why is it important that you stay healthy? Not so you stay healthy and live longer. It's so you are here for a longer period of time to make an investment for the kingdom. For the kingdom. I mean, honestly, yeah, right? I mean, that's that's what we're talking about. Yeah. No one wants anybody they love to die, but at the end of the day, what are we really talking about? Because none of this is eternal. We only get one spin around the globe, and that's it. So what are we gonna do with it, right? And yeah, I would want to be as healthy and strong as I can for that, you know, 70, 80, 90 years, whatever it is. But I'm well aware of the fact that at some point this thing's gonna shut down and I'm moving on to something else. So what am I doing with what I've got, right? Yeah. But but what I remembered a bit ago when we're talking about that will be done, like this drives me nuts sometimes. And I I try to I try to remember and pump the brakes and have patience with people, but when we start talking about, well, it's God's will, it must have been God's will that he died, you know. And I just oh come on, man.

SPEAKER_03

Horrible things we say to each other to to to give some sense of and even in our praying, we're trying to.

SPEAKER_01

It's like again, if it's your will, God, you let her pick up the phone, or if it's your will, let the call come through today, you know, let me get the sale, you know, whatever. I just have this math test. Golly, dude. You you drive yourself crazy doing that stuff. Crazy. And you're not getting anywhere closer to understanding who God really is if you're trying to do this, you know, kind of like what's the what's the game at Cracker Barrel with the golf tees and you're sticking them in the holes. You gotta do the right one so you figure out what's if I do this, well then God does this, and if I pray this, then God does that.

SPEAKER_03

Well, and that's it. It it all becomes quid pro quo. Yeah. And we're looking for a formulaic response to say, okay, wait a minute, if I'll say this, then God will have to do that. Yeah. It's like, who are you who are you kidding? You're you're not gonna manipulate God into abandoning his will, his mission, his plan to redeem all the words. I I I can't help it. When you said something earlier, it made me think of it. Uh uh go full nerd and reference uh Star Trek. Well, you already say quid pro go or whatever the heck he's gonna do. Quid pro quo?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, quid pro quo and manipulate in the same sense.

SPEAKER_03

Wait a minute. Wait a minute, wait a minute. Quid pro quo comes from Silence and Lambs, too. Let's not forget that. That's a that's a there's a movie reference there, okay?

SPEAKER_00

Okay, okay, okay.

SPEAKER_03

Anyways, um I thought it was okay if it was in a movie.

SPEAKER_01

You're fine, keep rolling. I'm not gonna make fun of you at a warp.

SPEAKER_03

Where Spock goes into the lithium crystal chamber or whatever is the warp core, and he and he's you know he's telling Kirk, this isn't like uh number two, I think, Rathicon or something. Hey, you went from Silence of the Lambs to uh to Star Trek, man. Stay with me.

SPEAKER_01

You're trying to take my spot?

SPEAKER_03

I'm trying, yeah. Um, and he says, you know, uh sometimes the uh the the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the many, yeah. Yeah, and so it's like no, we're not gonna God, hey, will you abandon your your your redemption arc that's been in place since the beginning of of time that's going to bring all of mankind it back into relationship, at least all of the believers back into relationship with Jesus Christ, you know, with your kingdom, so that you can do these things for me. Yeah. That's the height of like, you know, all sense of self-importance. Yeah, we we we don't think of it that way, but but that's that's essentially what's going on is we're like, you know, do this for me, God, I need this. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, but what does the world need?

SPEAKER_01

Right. Well, if yeah, if you take it outside of it, like if you're able to if you're able to pull that out and and really look at it, like a Tony Stark, you know, reaching in the thing and grabbing it and looking at it, oh yeah, that's not right. Yeah, fix that. Like if if you really were able to take your prayers and pull them out like that and look at them objectively, you go, yeah, it's pretty selfish.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

It's kind of like uh oh Bruce Almighty.

SPEAKER_03

When I I got you a little insecure right now. You're you feel like you got to up the movie reference, huh? No. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. All right, Bruce Almighty, yeah. Where does he answer an email?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and answer those email with yes to all. Yes to all. Like all heck breaks loose and because it's all selfish. You know, he pulls the moon in for Jennifer Aniston and it causes all the gravity stuff and weird stuff on the on the earth, and but it's all about him, and I think that's a really people can say what they want about Morgan Freeman, Jim Carrey, and the movies and whatever, but that's still a good movie about about really following God, I think. Better than Hoosier's. Wait a second. Wait a second. Just one mess media. I'm stopping, man. Yeah, it's not that good of a movie. Yeah, they're not, they're not, they're not doing strap prayers in there. That's dang sure. So but but yeah, I I I think about that a lot when it comes to our prayers, like how selfish they really are. And I know nobody's praying for Lamborghinis. I mean, most people aren't praying for Lamborghinis. I'm willing to put money on that. Somebody is. Somebody's still doing it. Lord. Won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz? I want to drive a Ferrari like Magnum did. That's a good country song reference right there. Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz? My friends all drive Porsches. I must make amends, right?

SPEAKER_03

So hey, we just um recently passed the 89th birthday of Whalen Jennings.

SPEAKER_01

Wow. How old is Willie Nelson?

unknown

Oh, I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Dude, is he he's 90 something, right? He's gotta be. He has to be. Google that.

SPEAKER_02

I'll Google that.

SPEAKER_01

We were in Texas this weekend, and there was some t-shirts that said have a have a willy good time or whatever uh at this one shop. And I was like, that dude's gotta be 90 something. He was old when I was a kid. Yeah. Yeah, 93. I knew it. I knew it was up there. Yeah. Wow. That's impressive. Oh, well. Anyway.

SPEAKER_03

Have a willy good time. Have a willy good time. Oh, let's see. Your kingdom, yeah, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

SPEAKER_01

And that is, just to put a pin in that, that is the goal, right? Is that we're here to bring heaven to earth. Like we we have a responsibility, uh, we are part of the kingdom role. So each day you and I go out and do what God has called us to do to fulfill that prayer in in our in our way. I mean, obviously, we're not in charge of everything and everybody, but how can we be a part of that happening? We should be asking that.

SPEAKER_03

And that and that's a theme. If you you know, if you haven't listened to the podcast before, go back to any of our Advent specials. Because Advent traditionally in the church has not only been a time to celebrate celebrate the birth of Jesus, uh, but even from the the old the ancient church, they've looked forward to the return of Christ as well.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And we've talked about that a couple times in some of our uh Advent specials because we realize that the kingdom, uh, this is one of those funny things, you know, we know and even even in the Bible it says uh the for the kingdom has come near. Or you've come near to the kingdom. I forget which way it says it, but you know, a couple of times people have answered Jesus and it's like, you hey, you're close. Yeah, yeah. You're really close.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so sh shout out to my nephew in law. I'm not really sure. My niece's husband, Cooper, who showed me this clip this weekend of somebody on Sean Ryan's show. You probably saw the episode, but it was this guy talking about giving Was he an exorcist? No, no, no. We did talk about those episodes, but it was not uh that one. But this guy who was in Argentina, I think, somewhere, and they were doing mission work, and they had were passing by this guy late at night, and he was stumbling his way back home. It was an older guy, and they took him in and bought him some bread, milk, whatever he normally got, they asked the cashier and at this little store right by where he lived, and and then they said after they bought the stuff and they were helping the guy into his room, he the whole time he had his head down, he looked up at the end, and all three guys were like, That's the face of Jesus right there. Like it blew him away in that moment. Like they all three talked about it later, and like, yeah, totally that that looked just like Jesus, like to them. Matthew, Matthew 25. Yeah, so he's thinking about the living in the flesh, yeah. Right, right, right. Whatever you've done, this is the least of these. The least of these, right? And so so then I I'm just thinking again, like for those guys for all of us, if we would just view opportunities bringing heaven to earth like that, and and seeing how we can be Christ, someone else, to help them see Christ, which then actually helps us see Christ. I mean, that's what we're talking about, because at the end, right, all we see is Jesus.

SPEAKER_03

I feel like you just did I feel like I feel like those kids at the end of Little Giants when John Madden takes the uh the whiteboard and he says, and you go here and you go there, and and uh and and then and then they you know he scratches it, or or in or in miracle. The annexation of Puerto Rico. The annexation of Puerto Rico for Little Giants, but in Miracle where he's like, Yeah, do you hear and you hear? And they're all looking at each other like, what did Coach just say? No, but I'm with you. It's like it's like this is how it works. These little things have a a going back to one of our favorites, the ripple. They have the ripple effect. You know, we're doing kingdom work and and those differences um they add up, they make a difference. That they do, Sean. That they're I'm a little I'm a little convicted by what you said there about the least of these because um there is a young lady that uh I've met uh years ago and and she is is a frequent flyer. And and so if somebody if they you you may have even met her. Um I'm not gonna say her name or anything on the on the podcast, but she is in the Monroe, West Monroe area here, and she uh either was something happened in utero to where she's not she's she's not intellectually her physical age. Yeah. And so she really do she wanders the streets and depends on the kindness of strangers, essentially. And and I and I f and I was really convicted the other day because I kind of got aggravated because she she um she was just sort of in the way. Yeah, you know, and I was like, come on, man, get over yourself. And you know, and and we were at a place and my daughter knows her, one of my granddaughters. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And uh she's like, Yeah, she asked if uh if we could buy, you know, she could she says she hasn't eaten. I said, Okay, grab her a muffin. You know, it was a small thing.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

But uh but I just remember feeling that way of thinking, okay, you cannot, you can you know better. But but at the same time, I I think a lot of people have felt that it's like this problem is not gonna fix itself. Yeah, yeah. And this muffin's not gonna like fix her life. Yeah. But but right now it's gonna it's gonna give her some, you know. And we were at a coffee shop and a muffin was the best we could do. So yeah, no, I and it's such a tough thing, but at the same time, what you're saying is like Yeah, Jesus didn't say solve poverty. You know, in fact, he said you'll always have the poverty. Thank you. Exactly the point he's gonna make. You we're always gonna have that. Uh but we can we can you know wrap somebody who has nothing, wrap them with a coat, feed them a meal, take them in, that kind of thing. So that's kingdom work.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's kingdom work here on earth. No matter how you slice it, it is. And yeah, it's sometimes it's a frustrating thing. I I totally get that. Uh I know I know the feeling. Oh yeah. So forgive us our debts? No, give us yo, hey, today our daily bread.

SPEAKER_03

Don't skip that, baby.

SPEAKER_01

What we just talked about. So, yeah, what does that mean, Pastor?

SPEAKER_03

Give us this day, our daily bread. Why are you putting me on the spot?

SPEAKER_01

Well, I just want you to tell me. Am I supposed to be praying for my lunch? When what am I supposed to do here?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, please pray for your pray over your lunch. How about that? Your seafood. Yeah. Eat all the food I see. Yeah. If you see it, pray for it. You know, uh bread. What's more common across cultural lines than bread? Sure. It's everywhere. Uh and it's been forever that it's been around. And so it's like it is one of the most uh it you know, he might as well he could have is just as said w easily said water. Yeah. You know, it's almost that kind of common and and everywhere, and it's essential. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So is that is that what he's talking about?

SPEAKER_03

Well, he he's saying life. He's saying, you know, he's saying give us a thing that that is life. It's that you know, this is why I say water, because it's not actual bread, not actual water. It's like that that uh daily life, that that's uh existence. Yeah. Uh I think uh are you showing me something? Are you just playing with the rock? Okay, okay, okay, you have to do it. Oh, I couldn't even see it. Uh my glasses are made for up close, not far away. Well I see. Yeah. Um but it's like uh later on in the chapter where he talks about you know not worrying about what you're gonna wear, what you're gonna eat, and all that kind of stuff. The Lord will provide it for you. And so, you know, I think here it's just like, hey, just you know, give us this day. Give us what we need for this day. Yeah. It's a trust in him. Yeah, yeah. Instead of in you know, instead of uh making it about, oh Lord, give me give me excess, it's like yeah, give me what I need for the day. Let me trust in you.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so if if we come to him and there's a fountain of water that never runs dry, yeah, and if he is the bread of life, yeah, yeah. So that's what I'm asking. This prayer, that part of the prayer is more about reliance on Jesus than being thankful for my egg McMuffin. Right. Right.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, not that we don't need to be, but which which and we want to look at the egg McMuffin as provided by God as well. That's what I'm saying.

SPEAKER_01

No, no, I get it, right? Yeah. But but I look at that and when we talk about daily bread and and understanding, and then you go, well, man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God, right? So go ahead. So what I'm saying is is is that directive there more about actual physical bodily sustenance as much as it is about reliance upon Christ.

SPEAKER_03

Bingo, I think it's the latter, reliance on Christ, yeah. Which which during 2020 more people should have prayed this when it came to toilet paper. Hey, they didn't have toilet paper in the beginning. You know, I no, I'm just saying that reliance on Christ, man. People are making a run on on on uh big box stores for toilet paper and stuff because they're afraid it's gonna run out. But but that's it. It's like we get into it and and look, it happens. It's Louisiana. What what's the first things off the shelf when a big storm comes, right?

SPEAKER_01

It's Louisiana, you need to wipe your butt. That's what you're saying.

SPEAKER_03

No, I'm switching back to food. Okay. Milk and bread, right? Milk and bread. They go. Sure. You know, it's like uh I remember my two months at when Dixie is a 16-year-old, uh, we had a hurricane that that barely touched, you know, central Louisiana, and and that's when they had the wholesome bread factory in Alexandria, and the guy drove over in the bread truck, and you could still the bread was still steamy in the bag. It had condensation, you know, because it was that fresh. Yeah. And and it was just people were buying it left and right because we get nervous about tomorrow's bread. You know, and and Jesus or God taught the the Hebrew people, hey, just depend on me. You know, and so it's that reliance on God. I think you're absolutely spot on.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Well, that's just I just wanted to kind of clear that up because it's w what we can talk about. I could have shortened everything I said to rely on God.

SPEAKER_03

I would like to amend my answer.

SPEAKER_01

No, it's fine. It's just that under the understanding that point, and I know you can't eat your Bible, right? I get it. You even with some some some barbecue sauce or ranch, it's still not gonna taste very good. But that's what Jesus is talking about. Is is relying on but yeah, like if I'm if I'm around a hungry person though, they they need a bowl of rice too. Right. I mean you know what I mean.

SPEAKER_03

And then all of a sudden then they see Yeah, I I have to re I'm reevaluating where I'm at in this prayer. Yeah. You know, maybe I'm the instrument of how your kingdom or your will is being done on earth.

SPEAKER_01

Exactly. Yeah, exactly. Because when you give me a bowl of rice or a peanut butter sandwich or whatever it is, then then I'm gonna I I can I can see God a little bit, especially if I really needed that bowl of rice, I could see God a whole lot better than because otherwise it's like in James. I wish you well. Be hungry. I mean be well fed, you know, like Yeah, yeah. Seven blessings to you, my brother.

SPEAKER_02

Seven blessings.

SPEAKER_01

You know, like what are we doing? Yeah. We have to we have to actually do the thing.

SPEAKER_03

Just a few chapters from now, uh, I and I just preached on this Sunday. It's one of my favorite places at the end of Matthew 9, where he looks out on the crowd, you know, and and he's filled with compassion. Sure. For they're like sheep without a shepherd, you know, distressed. And and that particular word, the use of the word compassion in the Greek doesn't just mean he had a feeling, it was a feeling strong enough that moved him to action.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, wow, that's good. That's good preacher stuff, right?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah. Well, it was it was one of the better Sundays you missed it at 10 30 at McGuire on Arkansas Road. No, but seriously, um it it's like you know, a lot of us, and uh the analogy I use was how many of us are driven down the road and we see somebody pulled over because they got a flat and we feel bad for them. Like like we have compassion, but we keep going.

SPEAKER_00

Well, they got a cell phone.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, they got I'm sure they got triple A or Road Hazard or something.

SPEAKER_02

They've already called somebody by now. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Their relatives are already on the way. Look at the time. Yeah. But then, but then have we ever been moved by our compassion to stop? Oh, yeah. No, I know what you're talking about. And so that that's the difference. And I and I think uh with regard to the kingdom, God isn't just looking for people who have strong feelings. Like, oh, you felt for them? Good enough. You know, you're in. No, no, no. No, he he wants us to be moved to action.

SPEAKER_01

Faith and deeds all day long. James chapter two. I just read that with some boys this morning. So shout out Kevin and Noah. But did you send them out two by two? There was two of them. So only choice I had. Yeah, yeah. Okay. Good. They lived in separate vehicles, though, so I don't know if that counts as two by two, but close enough. When they walked out, when they walked out of Waffle House, there was two of them.

SPEAKER_03

Well, if we stopped right here, I think everybody'd be like, Man, that was a good. That was good. I could do that. Lord's prayer, I'm good with that. But the next one. I need to be nicer. Well, I mean, I could be more compassionate. Yeah. You know, I I want God's will. Sure. Yeah. Yeah. But now we gotta say Now it gets hard. Like I'm I'm I have somebody in my church, and and they they admit this is hard. Sure. This part right here. Because I remind them every now and then. I was like, hey, I'm not saying I'm not saying you gotta forgive somebody to be forgiven. I'm just telling you Jesus kind of makes it sound that way.

SPEAKER_01

Your problem is not with me. Yeah, yeah. Your problem is with Jesus. I didn't make that rule up. So forgive us our trespasses. Yes. As we and that doesn't mean when you go on somebody else's property. That's what I always thought it meant when I was younger. I'm not trespassing. I'm good. I stay at home. I don't jump fences. Forgive us our sins, forgive us our debts.

SPEAKER_03

At least one of my brothers did a lot of that when he was to find a better duck hunting spot. Oh, sure, with a shotgun, I bet. Yeah, with a shotgun.

SPEAKER_01

Anyway. But or a fishing pole or something. Yeah, that's a fishing pole. So but our forgive us our trespasses, our debts, our sins, yeah. As we forgive those who have done so to us.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and that's really the best way. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who have sinned against us. That's that is like, let's just put it on the table.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Call it what it is, and then and then Jesus backs that up. Like, okay, if you didn't understand what that part of the prayer meant, uh jump down here another sentence, and I'm gonna tell you what it means.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

If you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your father will not forgive your sins. And that might be the most disturbing two verses in the Bible, honestly. Right. I mean, that scares me more than any of that stuff in Revelations, Pastor. That's all that stuff, you know.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah, because so much of that stuff is out of my control, right? Yeah. This one, this one's in my heart.

SPEAKER_01

You can't the And it's it's it's plain language, man. Pretty plain. Pretty plain. And it's straight out of the mouth of Jesus. There's not like it's not there was no go-between there. Jesus Jesus told the boys that, and then they had to sit on it. You know, they had to sit with it. They had to they had to they had to take that and eat that and and digest it and figure out what to do with it. Yeah. And so do we. Yeah. And so if you th and that's why but I just think too That it's it's almost basic, right? Because when you really truly receive the grace of God, I feel like then you are equipped to then forgive others. Like it when you have a full understanding of how God has had compassion on you and and cleansed you of your sins, then you ought to be able. And it's like that parable Jesus tells about the guy, the servant, the wicked servant, right, who who owes some money, he gets forgiven in death, then he goes and finds somebody who still owed him a little bit of money, chokes them out and throws him in prison. Like, wait a second. Yeah. You just receive this grace and then you don't translate that into the rest of your life. And I think also, like, for like if I withhold forgiveness from somebody, it yeah, it it it keeps me from really receiving God's grace. But I think it it really messes with them too on another level, right? Like it it's it's a struggle then Well, especially as a as a to be set free. As a witness. Yeah. It's a poor witness. It's a poor witness, right? And so you really slow down the wheels of the kingdom. You're not just giving somebody what they deserve, and I'm gonna make sure they know about it. Well, and then and not forgiveness ain't cheap, you know. I mean, come on, man. Who who are you to put yourself in that position? Yeah, right. You think you think God's was? It's not cheap at all. Yeah. And and you're not paying for it on the cross. So back this up a little bit and realize, wait a second, I'm by not forgiving, by not letting go, what I'm effectively doing is I'm I'm working anti the Lord's prayer.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I'm saying your will not be done. I'm not bringing heaven to earth because I'm not distributing the grace that I've been I'm not freely giving what I have freely received. I mean, come on.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So um 1 John 4 20, right? If anyone says I love God but hates his brother, he is a liar. For whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. So, you know, here here's Jesus kind of laying the foundation, and Paul builds on it, John builds on it, Peter builds on it, I think, in some ways, and it's like uh uh you you cannot you cannot sit there and and hold grudges and not forgive and then fully expect to run to the open arms of God, your father, and be forgiven. Yeah. Doesn't work that way. Have I told you my um my communion story? My old man in the communion story? I don't I don't know. Uh so this fellow just passed away recently. Um he and I ended up being just huge respect for one another. Uh but early on in my ministry at this one church, um he bawled me out on a Wednesday night in front of a bunch of kids, you know, and I'm doing the youth ministry, and so I'm like well, if you were a little older or younger and I was a little older, I think we'd go in the back parking lot. You know, it's one of those kinds like I was that furious, like, you know, because he just he talked to me like I was a like I was a kid and not a pastor of the church. And and it all over all over some other kid walking in there with a skateboard and getting water out of the water fountain in the neighborhood kid. And and he was scared that and he had good reason. He was worried the kid would ride the skateboard, he'd get hurt, sue the church, and all this kind of stuff. Anyways, so so I was mad at him, and he had said some ugly things to me. And fast forward a few weeks, it's communion Sunday. Oh yeah. And uh he he's he's on my road. He's he's kneeling. He's coming your way. He's he's kneeling. Yeah, I'm coming his way. Right. Oh, you're bringing it to him. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. And I'm like, the body of Christ broken for you. And I'm looking down there to my right, and he's about seven or eight people down like, the body of Christ broken for you, and I'm thinking, okay, Lord, I cannot go to this man, serve him communion with this, this heart, these hard feelings in my heart. Yeah. And so between when I saw him and when I got to him, me and the Lord did a lot of talking. Yeah. And and so when I put in his hands, I could say with love, I was like, the body of Christ broken for you. Yeah. Because I knew I was like, the Lord, you know, it wasn't, it wasn't for him, because I don't think he moved on. He didn't care. I was carrying that. Sure. And um I I think it made a huge difference in my ministry. Yeah. And it certainly made a big difference in in just my heart because I realized who cares? Let it go, man. Have you not done something stupid that you want the Lord to forgive you for? Yes. Let it go. Move on. So it's a big moment. Yeah. I've used that as a teaching time a few times to say, look, somebody's gonna wrong you. And and who are you to to get uppity about it and demand all this justice and satisfaction because you don't want the Lord doing that to you. You're slowing down the wheels of the kingdom. You're slowing them. That's a great expression there, too. Yeah. Very good. Slowing down the wheels.

SPEAKER_01

It's funny. I I found this pebble in the astroturf floor of our podcast room. And I was just sitting here thinking about how little things can jam stuff up. Oh, yeah. Slowing down the wheels of the kingdom. And for kicks, the other day when we were riding back from Rogers after loading up stuff for Reed and Mary Beth for their big move, we it was just me and Shauna in the truck, and we re-watched, well, she watched it, I listened to it, how we used to do with the kids when we played a movie. Yeah, yeah. And it was Nemo, which Finding Nemo was one of the that was like iconic. Like if you ask Imory and Reed what's the movie you watch the most on travel trips, they would say Finding Nemo. And there's a scene in there where Nemo's in the fish tank, and they have this elaborate plan to dirty up the fish tank, and he's like, swim in the filter, jam this pebble in there, it'll clog everything up, and we'll all get dirty, and the dentist will have to clean the tank. That's the idea. And so this tiny little, the tiny little pebble that Nemo picks up with his gimpy fin off the bottom of the tank and shoves into the filter shuts the whole thing down and gets totally gross. And so what I would say is that little bit of unforgiveness that you and I are are are unwilling or that we want to hold on to, or the will the forgiveness that we're unwilling to give, like you were just talking about, it it slows down the wheels of the kingdom to the point where it really mucks up the relationships that we have with the people. Yeah, it does. Which then mucks up the whole thing, and you honest to goodness, can't move forward. Let's just think if you didn't forgive that guy and you carry that with you. Oh no. How that would screw things up going forward in that church, even on days when he wasn't there. Oh, and you weren't around him.

SPEAKER_03

And what blessings would I have missed out on? Because we did good ministry together. We we um he would come out and he would spray paint our upward soccer fields. This was you know two years later because he was doing this, and he took great care. He's like, What are those measurements? And he'd get it and he'd line them out straight, do all this stuff. And he's like, he was a partner in ministry, and that wasn't gonna happen if I went around giving the stink eye all the time. Right, right.

SPEAKER_01

Or if you just never talk to him, never talked to him. That's right. I just I just I just stay away. Yeah. No point in ruffling the feathers, you know, just move on. I I'm gonna do me, he's gonna do him, we're just gonna be on, we'll be all good, right? No, it it can't work that way. And and that's like in Nemo, that he pops out of there and it's like, you're covered in germs, you know, like they they get all dirty and stuff. Like that's what happens to us when it's even worse, yeah, because it's on the inside. Right. Yeah. It's in and and you're trapped in it. Yeah. And it and it would get to the point in our life where we we wouldn't be able to move forward if we didn't forgive. And definitely the the work of the work of the kingdom that God wants to do in us and through us is fueled by grace. Like otherwise, we don't we don't go forward. Or it's it's it's that's what greases the wheels is is grace. Like we have we have to have that. Otherwise, we're stuck.

SPEAKER_03

Grace Grease.

SPEAKER_01

Grace Grease, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. That's good. All right, so I I'm gonna ask you to explain verse 13 because I'm not that smart. So it's the last part, isn't it?

SPEAKER_01

I just skipped over it too when I jumped into 14.

SPEAKER_03

Well, no, but it 14 really went back to 13. I mean, you know.

SPEAKER_01

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

SPEAKER_03

So let let me lead us. Oh, yeah. So um yeah, the way that you just said, and lead us not. I have to be careful if I say us and not too close together, it says and lead snot. Lead snot into temptation.

SPEAKER_01

That'll stop it. Put your snot in the way of temptation the next time speaking of greasing the wheels, put a little snot on. Ah, lead us not into temptation. I just think it's really simple. Like God direct the steps of my life away from the things that would pull me away from you. And again, I think if you live by that prayer, if that becomes a pattern of your life, then things are going to be different. But I think oftentimes we don't pray like that. So then we don't live like that, and we walk right into temptation's trap. It's not like the devil isn't a roaring lion roaming around seeking whom he may devour. That's a real thing. Like evil is out there. We get close enough to it, we're gonna get caught in it. Right. But if we are actively praying that prayer, then that means we're gonna be actively living that thought out and actively moving away from temptation, then we are going to avoid it. Otherwise, we'll be caught in the snare because we're not paying attention. I think that's the the best way to describe those two sentences are God, keep my eyes open. Like let me pay attention to the situations I'm putting myself in. I was talking with some guys today, and we were talking about the struggle with with with sexual sin and all that kind of stuff. And and part of it is, okay, what situation are you putting yourself in?

SPEAKER_03

Well, and that's why when you just said, Lord, keep my eyes open, I thought you were gonna say keep close my eyes.

SPEAKER_01

Well, sometimes, you know. The whole look away thing. Yeah, look away. And what do you what do you not need to see? What do you not need to take in?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, to be clear, because you referenced James earlier, uh, James 1.13 talks about how God does not tempt us. Yeah, God's not doing it. So when we say and lead us not into temptation, that's not to say God don't tempt us today. That's to say exactly what you're saying.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Uh God help us avoid it. Yeah. Because because if it was up to us, we're a big old magnet. Or you know, temptation's a big old magnet to us. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And God's not gonna God's going to lead you if you want to be led. That's the true thing. Right. If you want to be led, but if you don't want to be, then that's fine. You know, you're right. Because you're not saying, all right, God, uh, like you just said, don't don't put this, don't put this one in front of me today, God. Well, God's not sitting there doing that in the first place. We live in a broken world. Yeah. It's gonna happen. But if you say, God, lead me away from that, that's a different story. And and following God, being led away from garbage and temptation and porn and all kinds of sin, like that's what sets us apart and makes us different. Yeah, all that kind of stuff. Like, lead me away from that, be the good shepherd, take care of me, let me seek my daily bread and not this other bull crap that I do not need, and and fill my in filling my life with nonsense, lead me away from that.

SPEAKER_03

We we've got friends coming in town that uh we've known for years. And and uh I was recently talking with them about um being more intentional on time away because they they lead busy lives like we do. And and uh one of the things Courtney and I have had to to just be aware of is that getting out of work mode and into vacation mode is really hard. Super difficult because we bring our anxiety and our our stress and all that stuff with us. And so we've actually begun to talk about e even even on our days, we just become super intentional saying, you know, and we realize we have to do this in our in our good morning time. It's like, hey, I hope you have a great day. Like, like we are you know, just like I think related to this, we're saying, God, we we want to be out of temptation, you know. Keep us away, lead us away from it, God. Sure. And and so in our relationships, and when I was talking with them, it's like, hey, uh set yourself up by talking about your expectations before you get there. Because when you're there, sometimes it's too late. Right. Uh you know, and so like, hey, what do you want to get out of next weekend? Oh man, I wanna I wanna have I want to read a book or I want to go to dinner with you and and you know, go on a long walk to the park or whatever. And and it's like, okay, you now we're now we're like we're avoiding conflict because we're getting on the same page together, uh, we're we're taking an advantage of this and we're we're just you know really working intentionally. And I think this prayer is a way of saying, God, I temptation is everywhere, lead me away from it.

SPEAKER_00

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Wise wise words. Yeah, keeping your eyes open. Yeah. Eyes on the prize, eyes on the ball, whatever you want to talk, however you want to paint it. Like, pray that. Lead me not into temptation, lead me elsewhere, God. Because God will do it. If you ask God for wisdom, he'll give it to you.

SPEAKER_03

And and that also is looking at where you want to go. You know, the the uh there's a neat little trick. I don't know if you ever notice this. Um when you're on a bicycle and you're on a sidewalk and you get too close to the edge. Don't look at the edge you're getting too close to. Look turn your head to the edge you want to move towards.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, and the bike will drift that way. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. And and and I've noticed that to be true. It's like, okay, uh we'll we'll walk, you know, two or three people across on a sidewalk or whatever, and we'll get up to a place where, you know, maybe it's a little there's a puddle or whatever. Don't look at the side that you're afraid of stepping off of. Look over there, and you're you you're kind of your head leads you that direction. Yeah. And so we're so busy looking at temptation, saying, Oh Lord, I hope I don't do that. That it's like, no, move your gaze. All right, Lord, how what do you want me to look at?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. You know, fix your eyes. Yeah. That that's scriptural. You like that better?

SPEAKER_01

You made a face. It's gonna be a bad joke, so just keep rolling. Just keep rolling. But uh but anyway, we'll make that joke off here. Yeah, I do I do think you're exactly right, because it's it is about where our eyes are leading us, and and the eyes of the heart and the lust of the flesh and all that kind of stuff. But again, God lead me not into that. And and you can't be praying for that while you're just like looking at it. That doesn't make any sense. Like you have to do something about it, right? You have to make a daggum change. You God's not going to do all of that stuff for you. Yeah. But if you ask to be led and you have a willing heart, well then God's gonna lead you. I I do a hundred percent believe that. Yeah, but so many times we will say those things and we'll go, man, that's a good thought. Leave me not in temptation. Well, I need that guy. I'll tell you what, man, but but then you don't change anything. I mean, come on, man.

SPEAKER_03

You can't you can't say leave me not in temptation as you sit down at at Golden Corral. It's too late.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, right, exactly. There's the soft serve ice cream right over there. It's too late, bro. Yeah, that's a great point, man.

SPEAKER_03

So oh, okay. I like it. We made it through 6 15. That's good. Uh hey, I had a thought. Um we need to revisit the name of the podcast and how we got the name for our 100th anniversary. Oh, it's a good I think we need to do that. I was talking to somebody about it and uh I think that's uh it's time. I like it. It's time.

SPEAKER_01

I like it. I think should we do that in costume?

unknown

Oh.

SPEAKER_01

This is Sparta, baby.

SPEAKER_03

This is Sparta. Well, that gives me time to order a uh one of those muscle suits off of fake abs. The fake abs off of uh off of Amazon or something.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I thought for a split second you were gonna say that gives me time to do some sit-ups, but that's not what you said.

SPEAKER_03

No, I I there's not enough time. The Spartan diet, the Spartan workout. Yeah, there's not enough time.

SPEAKER_01

Dude, we should do something like that. We should make some kind of crazy challenge.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, we could. 100th episode, yeah. Okay, yeah. Well, we're done with 94 or 95.

SPEAKER_01

You said 95. 95. Five more. Five more. Wow. I think on the hundredth episode we launched some kind of ab challenge. An ab challenge? But you just between us. Oh, okay. And we we could have a check-in with ourselves, you know, at at I don't know, ten episodes later or something like that. Oh, I like it. Okay. Kind of similar similar to what my my guys and I are doing with push-ups with the board over there. But this would be ab related, right? And then we could update you know the our listeners and let them know how we're going. Okay. Maybe you can do some measuring, huh? Oh, yeah. I mean, get serious about it. Yeah.
