Stronger Than Your Boyfriend

Group Fitness vs Group Programming

Barpath Fitness Season 1 Episode 79

In this episode, we talk about everything you need to know about group fitness and group training. Individualized programming is the best way to train. Period. You will see the best results by having a solid personal trainer tailoring a program that is specific to you. However, having extra motivation that comes with working out with a group at a lower price point than hiring a trainer are factors that pull people towards group fitness. The bottom line is doing what gets you accountable to some sort of fitness practice.

We discuss how working out in a group setting creates community and accountability. Group fitness classes, although fun, will actually provide diminishing returns in the long term, because of how the workouts are structured.

Group training is a great way to combine a sense of community along with properly structured strength training with real reps, sets, and rest. Some examples of group training are CrossFit, bootcamp classes, and online programs. It’s best to join a training program with 6-10 people or less, so you still get one-on-one time with a trainer that can progress you in your movements.

Overall, a group program that incorporates progressive overload and has some element of individual attention to form is going to get you far more results than group fitness classes every single time. Group fitness classes are random and utilize movements that might be fun and engaging, but they aren’t optimal for your fitness goals.
