Season 2, Episode 82

Join your hosts Carmen and Sophia Micsa to learn from our guest Mary Bush Shipko what it took to become the first woman Airline pilot for Hughes Air West in 1976.

Aviation Pioneer and author Mary Bush Shipko was one of the first women airline pilots in the country. She began her flying career in 1964 in South Florida. Mary plays second violin in CCO a community orchestra in Gloucester, Virginia. Today she speaks nationwide, inspiring young women to become airline pilots.

On this Seeds of Sunshine:

  • Mary recounts the lessons she learned from her father, such as determination and never giving up.
  •  In the '60s, there were no women airline pilots, but Mary's father gave her flying lessons when she was 16.
  • Mary loved flying immediately because flying uses almost every aptitude a human being has, such as physical skill, emotional control, and three three-dimensional problem-solving.
  • Mary's memoir Aviatrix is her true life story, which she wrote to inspire others.  Her main flight used to go around the Caribbean Basin both into the Bahamas. Navigation aids were fairly primitive.
  • Mary believes that being an airline pilot is a fascinating and rewarding career. It is a unique combination of adventure and technical expertise. It has very high job satisfaction.
