Turning Overwhelm Into Action
===
[00:00:00]
Brandi: Do you ever feel paralyzed by overwhelm? Like you don't know what to do or how you're going to get it all done. You're juggling being a parent, a spouse, a business owner, and overwhelm of course pops in. And then what most of us do is we freeze. Nothing moves forward. We don't hit our goals, which then cause a whole nother amount of emotion.
Well, today. I would love to take that overwhelm and move it into action for you. That doesn't create more overwhelm, but instead helps you feel relief and empowered to move forward in your business, to move forward in your life with a structured plan. So today's episode is all about taking overwhelm. And empowering you to turn that overwhelm into actionable steps that not only help you get more [00:01:00] done, but also get you excited to get more done.
And to get something done that leads you towards your goals, not just working to work, but working to actually get you towards your goals, so today I'm really excited to share with you the four step process I take myself through and my family through whenever overwhelm creeps in. So if you're finally ready to move out of overwhelm and into action, this episode is for you.
So let's jump on in.
Welcome back to the Serve, Scale, Soar podcast, the go to place if you want to start, grow, or scale your ad management business. I'm brandi mowles, and today I'm breaking down how to go from overwhelm to action. Overwhelm can be one of the biggest things that stops us from moving forward. And [00:02:00] I'm not just saying that Everyone who's overwhelmed doesn't move forward, because there are people who thrive under overwhelm.
Sometimes I'm that person, and sometimes I'm not. But for the majority of people, and after working with over 2, 000 service providers, I know that overwhelm does not serve the majority of people. So when we get in this place of overwhelm, what can we do? How do we get out of it? How do we take that overwhelm and turn it into action?
Because one thing I do know is without overwhelm, there's no growth. Because when we're overwhelmed It shows that there's either a lot to accomplish or we're not really sure what the next steps are. And so we get this feeling of overwhelm. And so today I'm going to give you a four step process on how to go from overwhelmed to action and getting wins.
And whenever you start to feel that [00:03:00] overwhelm, so I hope you come back to this podcast episode or incorporate these tools, this four step process, this tools that I'm about to give you into your life. Because this isn't just about business. This can also be applied to how you live your life.
And so with that, let me start with how this episode even came about. So right now, I don't know when this is going to air, but my husband and I, my family are in a big transition phase. We sold our house, we're moving out of Florida and we're moving to Georgia. It's a long, it's a short story, but a long story.
And I'll save that for another podcast episode. But the big thing is all this happened and we were given 28 days to move out of our home. And find a new home and so some could say, Oh my God, that sounds overwhelming. And I'll be honest with you at first it was, but then I move out of the overwhelmed stage very quickly using these tools.
And so I never thought Oh, let's do a podcast episode on this. But what happened is [00:04:00] I was fixing coffee and my husband was looking around and I could just tell. That something was up. So I said, what's wrong? And he looked around and he was like, this is just really overwhelming. And I said, what? He said, just all of it.
But specifically we have to pack up this whole house. While we're trying to wrap up Riley's first year of kindergarten, we have Bodie running around and he is like everywhere and in everything now. Me still working because I had things on my books and we have to pack up this house along with going through, like we have to be out of our house for the appraiser and stuff like that.
So there's a lot of moving pieces to this and he just was like, especially packing it up. And I said, do you want me to tell you it's going to be okay? We're going to get through this. Or do you want me to tell you what I would tell one of my students? And as a projector, if you know anything about human design, I've learned that I can't just give advice.
I need to wait for [00:05:00] the invitation. And especially in my marriage. Y'all are listening to this podcast. You have every right. give me permission to give you advice, but with my husband sometimes it gets tricky. And so I was like, do you want me to just be okay with this and let you sit here and fill this or do you want me to give you some advice?
And he said he looked at me and he gave me a side stare and he was like, actually I want the advice that you would tell your students or clients. And I was like, okay, so overwhelm is a choice and you have a choice right now where you can stay in overwhelm and then you can tell me later how that served you all day long.
Or we can go through these four steps and I can help you get out of overwhelm and into action. So the first thing I need you to do is make a decision. Do you want to get into action or do you want to stay overwhelmed? And he said, I want to get into action. So I gave him this roadmap that I'm going to give you today.
So you can thank Austin for this episode because he truly, truly [00:06:00] inspired it. And it's funny because I don't usually ask him if he wants coaching, but in this one instance, I did. And I truly believe that it was so I could come give y'all the steps that I use all the time to get myself out of overwhelm and into action.
So what are these four steps? Let's break them down. Whenever you're feeling this moment of overwhelm, We first need to identify where is the overwhelm coming from and get as specific as possible because it's easy to be like life's overwhelming, business is overwhelming. But as he was looking around, I already knew that he was overwhelmed by the packing because I'm usually the one that does like, The, a lot of the packing because I just have a system for it.
This is going to be our 19th move y'all. I am no stranger to packing up a house, which also probably plays in the fact that I'm not overwhelmed about it is because I just know what needs to be done. And sometimes in our business we get overwhelmed because we don't know what needs to be done. [00:07:00] I will say my biggest overwhelm point is the playroom.
The playroom is my like kryptonite. I get so overwhelmed looking at that playroom like on a daily basis, and I take myself through these steps to get out of the overwhelm. So this will work for business. This will work for your life. So the first thing is you have to identify specifically what's causing overwhelm.
So in your service based business. Maybe it's that you need to get HoneyBook or Dubsado set up and you're like, I don't even know where to start or I've tried. I'm just so overwhelmed. Or maybe it's the fact that you're onboarding three new clients and it's Oh my gosh, I am so overwhelmed. This is so much to get done.
And I have it. Or maybe it's because summer's coming up and the kids are going to be home and you're like, how do I manage my business and the kids being home? So we need to identify the specific thing that's causing the overwhelm. It would have been easy for me to tell my husband, yes, moving is overwhelming, but instead I ask him like, what is actually causing the overwhelm?
And [00:08:00] as he was looking around, I knew it was the packing and same thing in our business with me. I had a goal this month on our revenue goal. And I was like, how are we going to get there? We have some people, I'm off boarding some one on one clients for summer and things like that. And I was like, how are we going to hit this goal?
And I, and I felt that overwhelm coming. And so what I did is I like, okay, I identified like this overwhelm is coming from the want and desire to hit this goal. Also being the sole provider from a family. So it was like, how do we get these sales? And I identified, where's this overwhelm coming from? And then the second step after you identify is to make a decision.
And that's what I asked my husband. You have a decision to make right now. You can stay overwhelmed and see how well that serves you. Some people it does serve them. They thrive under that condition. Now, is it good for your cortisol levels and your health? Absolutely not. So I [00:09:00] probably wouldn't choose that one all the time.
But there are some times that like it actually works and it's like when we procrastinate and wait till the last second to finish it and then we're like endorphin rush and stuff like that. I get like that sometimes. Like I am a procrastinator and Dan Martell and I've heard him talk about this is entrepreneurs.
A lot of us come from a life of chaos, like a childhood of chaos. So we thrive in the chaos. Which can also be overwhelming and so sometimes we put ourselves back in that chaos and that's where like procrastination stuff But once again, it's not good from for us from a health standpoint or anything So we can also use this to move away from that.
So we have to make a decision Am I gonna choose to stay overwhelmed or am I gonna choose to wipe my plate clean and start over? And if you get to phase two or step two and you're like, yes, I'm going to choose not to be overwhelmed because overwhelm is a choice, then we can move to stage three. [00:10:00] So step one is identify where the overwhelm is coming from specifically.
Step two, make a decision. Are you gonna stay in overwhelm or are you gonna move past that? Three is break it down. Once we identify what it is, now we have to break it down. So with my husband, I said, you know what? The easiest way to pack is to take it room by room. Instead of looking at this whole house that needs to be packed, let's take it room by room.
I'm going to take you through some of the things that we talked about today. Let's just take it room by room and when we can start checking off room by room or section by section, then like it's going to go, we're going to get everything done. And so in our business with this revenue goal that I was telling you that I had, and I was [00:11:00] feeling overwhelmed about it in the beginning, What I did is I looked at our, how much money we already have booked.
So what is the money that we know from payments, from contracts, from all of that that are already coming in? Then I look at how much we want to do and I figure out what's the gap. What is the number between what we already have slated to come in and where we want? And we have the gap. Once I had that number, I was like, okay, now I'm going to break it down.
What promos do we have? How many students do we need? Do I need a new one on one client? How can we increase our revenue to hit our goals? With what we have, and I broke it down. I said, okay, we need this many new conversions for client students. We need this new, this many people to upgrade into certified.
And we need this many people to join us in Strategist Society. And once I did that, I have a [00:12:00] game plan. So I'm gonna take it promo by promo, program by program day by day, and I'm checking things off along the way. So when we can break it down into what needs to be done, it makes it more manageable. So if you're sitting there and you're like, okay, I need to get two more clients, then let's break it down.
What's the, what do you need to do to, are you need X amount of revenue goal? Great. You know that means you need two more clients. Awesome. So then how many discovery calls do you need to do to get those clients? If you have 50%, then you know, you need four, you may need, if you're at whatever, you may need six.
30%. So how are you going to get those discovery calls? How many people do you need to reach out to? How many cold emails do you need to send? How many people do you need to DM? How many people do you need to contact in order to get those discovery calls? And then you have your daily action plan out of that month.
How many [00:13:00] people do you need to reach out to every single day to hit those goals? And when you break it down like that, you have a plan of action. You know exactly what you need to do in order to get where you're going. Takes the overwhelm away. We're going to zoom in to only what that day needs instead of zooming out and being like, Holy crud, where am I going to find two new clients?
No, it's, I just need to reach out to 25 people or 15 people today, connect with 15 people. And then I'm going to be able to like, And then you look at it in weeks. So we need to break it down to make it bite size so we can see this is the action I need to do to hit this goal or to get out of overwhelm.
Then number four, you need a quick win. And so with my husband, after I coached him through that, I said, okay, now that we have a plan, this is what we're going to do. I need us to, I need you to go do something really quick. So we get like the cements in our brain that we're okay, that the overwhelm is going to wash away.[00:14:00]
And I said, let's go in to our closet and let's just pack up one box of all the we have this one section of cold weather stuff because we live in Florida currently. So like the only time we go have cold weather stuff is when we travel to like Sedona and stuff like that. So I was like, let's go to this one tiny section of our closet and let's pack up the cold weather stuff.
We're not going to need cold weather stuff from now until then. for tuning in. And he said, okay, so we went and you know what? We packed it up. We got the win. And now the overwhelm was no longer there. So when we feel this overwhelm, we have a step by step process. When it came to the revenue goal, I have it broken down.
Now, what can I do to get a quick win? For me, it was, I went and scheduled the two webinars that we're doing this month in order to hit our conversions for client school. They went in my calendar. I saw that I only had one and I was like, you know what? I want to do a second one because we have this Memorial Day holiday, which is [00:15:00] wonky.
And so I was like, instead of one, let's do two. So we did two. And so with that, I got a quick win. For me putting that in the calendar was a quick win. We have everything in place in order for us to hit what we need to hit. So with that being said, you have to get the quick win in order to win.
And I'm going to talk a little bit more about that in a second. But I just wanted to let you know that if you're looking to make this actually believable for your brain and for yourself, that you're not overwhelmed anymore. So let me take you through. And so one way that you could do this if you're following the discovery call plan is now you need to go reach out to five people real quick.
I'm not overwhelmed. I have my action plan. I know exactly what to do because overwhelm a lot of time comes from the fact that we just don't know where to start. We don't know what to do. So if we can create the action plan, then the overwhelm will start to wash away. So let me take you through those four steps again.
First, you have [00:16:00] to identify where overwhelm comes from specifically, then two, you have to make a decision. Do you want to stay overwhelmed or do you want to move into action? Three is we break it down. How do we get into action? What are the steps that we need to take? And then four is we get a quick win.
We actually step into action. So that is my roadmap for getting you out of overwhelm and into action. I use this on a daily, weekly, monthly, yearly basis whenever that overwhelm comes up and I do it in my personal life. And I do it in my professional life. And I hope you can take these tools, these four steps and start implementing them into your life.
Because when we can stay out of overwhelm, we can move faster towards our goals. We can come from a place of gratitude. We can come from a place of enjoyment and a place that lights us up, our happiness factor. And I want all of you to live a joy filled life. I want all of you to be happy, [00:17:00] but like also overwhelmed does happen.
And I want you to know that that's okay. It doesn't mean just because I have this action plan I'm never overwhelmed, but when I feel that, that's when I go through the four steps. And once you get good at this, it just becomes second nature, but you have to practice. So practice in your daily life, your professional life, and let me know how that's going.
So I hope you enjoyed this episode. It's a little different than my normal episodes, but still, even when we get into mindset and stuff, it's still super actionable. So I can't wait to hear from you. How this works for you. Use it on yourself. Use it on your family. Use it on your kids. Use it on your husband, your spouse.
