Ep. 234 : Turning Messy Action into Success: How Jamie Launched a Thriving Ad Management Business

===

[00:00:00]

brandi-_1_08-01-2024_090439: Maybe you've been thinking about starting your business as an ad manager. And you're wondering, do I even have what it takes? I've never done anything like this. I don't have experience in marketing. I don't have experience running ads. Who am I to do this? Or maybe you're sitting there and you're like, how is she moving so quickly?

How did she get started? How did she get moving? How is she charging that so quickly? One today's episode. I have a special guest for you, Jamie. She's one of our members of conversions for clients. She's a mom. She is an ad manager and she just got started not too long ago. And she's already charging $1,500 per month per client. And what I love about Jamie and this episode is she's breaking it down.

Step-by-step for you on exactly what action she took to get her, where she is today with her business and how you can do the exact same thing. So, if you're ready for this, let's jump on [00:01:00] in.

Hello, Serve Scale Soar family. Oh my goodness. Welcome back to another episode of the Serve Scale Soar podcast. My name is Brandi Mowles and I am beyond excited because one of my favorite types of episodes is when we have our Clients from conversions for clients or the strategist society come in and share their story Because all of us have such different backgrounds and stories.

And so these are my favorite type of episodes y'all have shared with us. These are your favorite types of episodes. So I cannot wait to introduce you to one of our students, Jamie, and she is freaking fantastic. She's only had her business for a short amount of time, but she's just making waves and I cannot wait for you to get to know her.

So Jamie, tell us a little bit about who you are as a person and about your business.

jamie_1_08-01-2024_070439: Hi, I am a wife of 15 years, I'm a mom of two, my little ones [00:02:00] are eight and five. I love basically we've lived overseas, my whole adult life between Mexico and China. And I'm currently back living in Mexico again. Yeah, just excited to be here.

brandi-_1_08-01-2024_090439: So tell us about your business. How did you get your business started? When did that start? How long have you been running ads for clients?

jamie_1_08-01-2024_070439: Basically the, the story is we lived in China for almost 12 years and I always taught English there and in China you can make really good money tutoring and teaching English, always had a little side hustle in my home. And since we got stuck outside of China because of COVID and have lived in Mexico and. That's been going on four years now. And basically the kids were small. And so then when we moved here, I, I wasn't really working and I always wanted to do something else because I always enjoyed being able to tutor or do something else on the side to bring in extra income [00:03:00] for our family. And my husband had started doing a Facebook ads business as well. And we obviously, he worked with you and, and, know, you were coaching him and different things. But one day I was just kind of like, cause I was looking for jobs or thinking about looking for jobs. I don't think anybody really likes to do the whole, redo their resume, get on LinkedIn, like, where do I even start?

I've been overseas for so long. What is my skillset? And I was just like, what do I even do? And so I was laying in bed one night and I was just like. You know what? My husband learned how to do Facebook ads. Why don't I learn how to do Facebook ads? And then literally the next morning he was like, I was just thinking, why don't you learn how to do Facebook ads? And I was like, yes, that was like the sign, the confirmation that we were both in agreement and had the same idea. And it just so happened. I don't think it was a coincidence that you were [00:04:00] starting the bootcamp and Excuse me. And yeah, I was like, great. I listened to a couple of your, your podcasts about, starting Facebook and starting Facebook ads.

And I was just like, I'm in, I'm convinced. Cause I was like, really, what else am I going to do that? I wanted something that was flexible because the kids schedule here in Mexico, there's a ton of holidays. So it seems like Literally every other week, like the kids are off school one day for whatever holiday here or someone is sick or whatever.

And so I just felt like I still needed something that was really flexible that I could still be present for my kids. Plus other things that I volunteer and that I'm involved in and things like that. And I was like, yeah, what else really am I going to find that I could. Have the flexibility to like work from home and not have to mold into someone else's business.

Because honestly, I've been, I've been teaching in China and then I've been out of the workforce, so to speak, for, [00:05:00] for several years. And I just felt like. I don't know. I felt intimidated, honestly, about trying to mold into someone else's business and even doing admin kind of stuff.

I was like, I don't really like that kind of stuff. So anyway, so I heard your podcasts and, and I was just like, yep, I'm in, I'm joining the bootcamp. And I already knew like from the beginning, I was like, yeah, I'm going to, I'm going to get conversions for clients. I'm going to join. And that was in. March that that I joined.

And so I didn't really get started. I think I took a trip in there. And so I was didn't really get started like on the course until maybe the end of March. And, and then I heard, you guys talking about, okay, you need to do your marketing minutes simultaneously because it can be scary as you're like, feel like I don't really know what I'm doing, but I need a client to learn what I'm doing and just get on the bike, so to speak.

And just try it out. And so I remember asking you, [00:06:00] cause I had an Instagram account from a previous business that I had. A health business called mama's be moving that I had online a couple of years back and ended up having to shut that down, but I still had 2000 some followers on that Instagram account.

And so I was like what do I do with this? Do I repurpose it for Facebook ads now? And Brandy, you had encouraged me to just at least get six posts up, get six reels up, make a little bit of content and, and just get that up so I can start, redo my bio and all of that. And so within. one of those first six reels that I just put up and, my call to action was DM me start if you're interested in getting started. And I was so excited. One day I had, it was in April that I had someone messaged me start and I was like, are you serious?

brandi-_1_08-01-2024_090439: It works.

jamie_1_08-01-2024_070439: like, okay, so now I'm, frantically going back to the module, I'm like how to do a discovery call.

And it was seriously like all of the. I feel like everything has really been the just in time learning that they call it, [00:07:00] where it's like right before the call, I'm, quick taking notes. Okay, what do I need to ask and all of that? And and yeah, it went well. I offered, just a very like low rate for, for my first clients and yeah, and got the first client and that was exciting.

And thankfully, I feel really I don't know. I think just blessed, God's looking out for me that my, my first clients have been honestly like really simple clients, like they're just really easy to work with, just really chill. Like their, their ads aren't really super complicated and stuff. And so I'm very thankful for those first ones.

I'm, this is going into launch season and so I'll have my first launches coming up. So that'll be also some training, but. that is kind of the, the story.

brandi-_1_08-01-2024_090439: I love it, Jamie. And you touched on so many topics that I want to go back to. One is Like you talked about you want to be with your kids you want to be present and you need [00:08:00] something that was flexible And I think that's one thing and you said this beautiful you put it so beautifully about how you didn't want to mold into someone else's business because a lot of services that is what you have to do you have to like Assimilate with their business, like you are part, almost like their team, almost like an employee, but you're not that role where you have to show up for meetings and all this, but as an ad manager, you're really like a lone wolf when it comes to people's business.

They don't expect you to be on team meetings, they don't expect you to like, be part of the team, because a lot of times you're doing something that they have no idea what's going on, and a lot of them don't. Want to know what's going on, like how it works. And so the nice part about that is that you don't have to be on call 24, seven as an admin, you can literally do it whenever.

And there's very little calls that have to be happening. And that was one of the things that really attracted me to ad management is when I started at that [00:09:00] point with ads. I, Riley was eight months old and so I couldn't have something where I had to be on call all the time because I was already on call all the time with her when they're that little and so I think that that's such like an elegant way to put it like you don't have to mold into someone's body.

business as an ad manager. And I think a lot of people are looking for something like that, but then they think that they have to start in the online space offering things like virtual assistant work, executive assistants, and those you are so into their business. And so I love that you were like, Nope, I'm just jumping straight to ads.

And I know something that your husband, Kwejo and I have talked about is he was like, people think that I just give her clients. And I don't, she does her marketing minutes. And you talk about how you got that first client from Instagram. And one thing that I want people to know is we don't just teach Instagram.

We teach 10 different ways to lane clients based on the clients you want to work with, based on [00:10:00] your goals, where your clients are hanging out. And I remember you coming to that Q and A and saying what do I do? I have this what do I do with Instagram? Do I need to start? And so many people will stay stuck in that, what do I do phase.

But you, you show up, you ask the question that some people would have been like, Oh, this is a dumb question to ask. And I'm just going to spend two months like deciding. And you just came and you were like, what do I do? I have this Instagram account and I was like, post six posts. And you were like, what do I post?

And I was like, yeah. Just get stuff up. Here's some memes. Just get something up. It doesn't really matter. Just get something about ads up. Do a few DM me situations. And I was like, you're probably not going to get many DMs, but you only need one. That's all you need.

Fair enough, you took the action.

So many people will be so stuck in analysis paralysis that they don't move forward. And you, one thing I've noticed about you, Jamie, is you just take this messy action. And it produces results. You said I don't know if God's looking out for me or whatever. And I always [00:11:00] say that I read this in the alchemist.

It's such a great book, but they talk about how the universe favors those who start. And so I feel like that's exactly what's happening. No matter what anyone believes You will be favored when you just get started and you just start moving toward your goal. Even if you have no clue what you're doing and that's what you do.

You take messy action because you said right before I got that client and then I'm like going to watch the modules on how to do a discovery call. And then I'm watching the modules on how to set it up. And you are just like taking that action to get things going. And then you know that you have all the resources you need to be supported through the process.

So tell me more about that. It's scary to take on that first client, especially when you don't know ads. So had you ever run ads before?

jamie_1_08-01-2024_070439: never, I I've, I've heard some of the, the lingo just because my husband does it. And I've, I've been in his office and kind of seen [00:12:00] him like clicking around and accounts and stuff, but it's a whole nother deal when you are, you In there because ads manager can just be this beast of a, of a thing as you're trying to just, okay, where do I go?

And you're literally like, I remember listening to another one of your podcasts and another lady that had taken CFC and said, I'm, I'm just in there like with my ads manager screen open on one monitor and then, the course on the other and like literally like stopping your video and going back and clicking around. And that's literally what I was doing too. Just I'm watching the module. Okay. Where do I go and how do I set up audiences and what do I do next? And yeah. The whole onboarding process, and, and everything is just new. The first time is just kind of, scary in a way. Like what if, what if I mess this up, but you just, like you said, I think that was perfectly said messy action.

That is so true. It's just you just got to do it. And maybe you're going to make a mistake [00:13:00] again with your first clients. That's why you charge. Probably a lower price just to let them know and be transparent. Hey, I'm just getting started in this thing, and so hopefully they're, they're understanding if, mistakes happen or whatever, but the, the Facebook group as well has been just an amazing. Resource because people are so responsive in there and the group is so supportive and you're in there all the time. And so I feel like if I put a question in there, I'm going to get an answer within a day of just, what do I do with this? And, and there's, there's resources, there's tons of bonuses and it's, it's been really, really helpful.

brandi-_1_08-01-2024_090439: So I know everyone's going to want to know what with your first client, how much did you charge?

jamie_1_08-01-2024_070439: I charged a thousand.

brandi-_1_08-01-2024_090439: I love that. So a lot of people,

jamie_1_08-01-2024_070439: comfortable with.

brandi-_1_08-01-2024_090439: yeah. And I always say I want y'all to start at 1500 but no less than a thousand. So you started with a thousand and I think that's so incredible that just speaks to like the need for ad [00:14:00] managers. People were always saying but I'm just getting started. Can I even charge?

Or is there still a need? And you found after six posts, you get a client on Instagram. Clearly there's a need for ad managers. And then you're able to, So in, entry level and start with a thousand dollar contract. And since then you've signed that client on for an extended contract.

jamie_1_08-01-2024_070439: Yeah, I did raise her price. And, but I said, I won't raise it to my, my current price because I appreciate she actually gave me the recommendation for my second client. And and so I wanted to honor that relationship, and so I said, you can lock in. Still a higher price, but I won't go up to my current price, but for six months, and she was like done, so I just right now, I just wanted to make sure that I still have the, the work because I still, I still need practice.

I still need experience. And I wanted to make it a no brainer for her and for me. And so that is just look, this is very simple. And [00:15:00] she's, she's just cool, done. Let's do this.

brandi-_1_08-01-2024_090439: And I think so much of what you're going through so early in your business is because you're just committed to taking that action and showing up and asking questions. Because I think that's one thing is women. We struggle with is to ask for help. And one thing, and I don't know if this is like culturally in the U S us women struggle with help, but Jamie.

And I know like you've lived in Mexico and China for a long time. So I don't know if this is like you just as you as a person or if it's a cultural thing, but you ask for help. And when you ask for help, you get support and it helps you take action because you came. And one thing I am never going to do is tell people, here's the black and white answer to something, because there's always a gray area.

And I remember this conversation, you coming and being like, what should I do? I was like you have options. Here's all the options that you can do with this client and how this could play out. So you pick your option and you run with it. And that's exactly what you did. You picked [00:16:00] out of the buffet of options that I gave you on how to run that contract.

And you did what's right. Best for you because you trusted yourself. So you took that messy action. You trusted yourself and you're continuously moving forward and you're not just getting clients from one platform. You also then have referrals. And so let's talk about that with the referral. Did you charge more?

Did you charge the same? How did that work out with the second client?

jamie_1_08-01-2024_070439: I, I charged more with the second client, just because at that point I felt I think I was. in or so. And again, because of you, Brandy, you always basically say okay, if you get one client and you're doing well, like that basically gives you the cred to be able to charge more for the next one.

And I was just like and especially because this client came in, she had tried to start her own ads, she had no idea what she was doing. And she was basically in the middle of a launch and opening the doors for her [00:17:00] membership. And she came in and was just like, I don't know what to do. I have no idea what I'm doing and she needed help right then, right there. So it's going to be basically a rushed situation. And so I also felt because of that, like she was sort of in a, in a desperate situation, if you will. And I was like, then let's charge, let's charge more. So I charged 15 for her. And she was, and because I think also she was in a very, just I need help. And so she, she was just like, cool, done, and so she was also just very excited to, to have the help. Like literally like your podcast is serve, right? Like we're serving the client. Like we're actually giving them something that they need.

They don't want to I've learned how to do Facebook ads or am learning, I should say. If I were a business owner doing something separate, like I wouldn't want to learn how to do all this for myself. Like I would much rather pay out to, to have someone do that service for me. And so you are offering something that's really valuable to them.

Like they [00:18:00] don't have the time, the energy to think about how do I even set all of this up? And so it's just much easier to, to contract that out. And so we are offering a service. And so I just wanted to mention that, but,

brandi-_1_08-01-2024_090439: I love that so much because I want everyone to make sure that they heard that she went from a thousand. And so many of you are stuck and she's been doing this since the end of March, beginning of April, really running ads since April. And we're recording this in August. And I just want to remind people I know so many people who have been running ads.

They're experts. I know that they can do the dang thing and they can do the dang thing well. And they're still sitting at 1, 200, 1, 500 a month. Because They're devaluing what they do because they're so good at it. And it comes so easy to them that they don't understand that people will pay for your expertise.

And your expertise don't have to be up to a level 10. [00:19:00] They just have to be more than that person knows. And so with that being said, like Jamie, this is how you're going to be able to scale your business so quickly. Putting your family first, because as you continue to get clients, as you continue to raise your prices, you don't need 10 clients.

You need five at 2, 000 and that's 10, 000 a month. Like when we do the math like that, it's so easy and it's manageable and maintainable. And so one thing that I love is the way that you view business. You just see it. You're like, I'm providing a service. I spent time going through all these. This program, it's a lot of videos, plugging into the Q and A's, then also going back to the trainings.

That's worth something. And I just love how you view that and how you're taking the advice that I give and you're just putting it in. You're like, Brandi says raise my prices, so I'm going to raise my prices. And I'm not going to do it by 100 bucks, I'm going to do it by 50. [00:20:00] 500 and I just love that.

Cause that's going to get you to your goals faster when we just move forward with conviction in our business. That's when we see it grow. And you're coming from a place of service, which I know any of the listeners that are listening right now, they're all coming from a place. Of service. So thank you for showing them how to confidently show up and serve, but also get paid for serving.

Because that's what we're here to do. We're here to have a business and serve our clients. And it doesn't have to be working for dirt cheap to serve. You can make a lot of money and serve. They can go hand in hand.

jamie_1_08-01-2024_070439: Yes.

brandi-_1_08-01-2024_090439: Jimmy, if You are talking to someone and they're like, I don't know if I can do this. I I don't know anything about ads.

I've never done ads. I am a mom. I don't know can I invest in a program? What would you say to that mom that's I don't know if I can do this?

jamie_1_08-01-2024_070439: You, you just gotta do it. I really [00:21:00] love your little slogan just do the dang thing, because I, I've said that to myself so many times in this whole process. I'm like, just gotta do it. It's. Like you said, it's messy action. I, I literally felt the same way. I don't have all of these, because of my time overseas.

I, I'm a certified teacher. But have any of these other career skills. I haven't been in the States. I haven't climbed the corporate ladder. I haven't done any of that stuff. Like my resume literally is like teaching English and I did some health coaching because I have a background in health and wellness and personal training and that kind of stuff. But I, yeah, I just felt like what else, as a, as a mom, when you, especially when your kids are little and it's just, it's so time consuming and exhausting. And so I really think Doing Facebook ads really is, there's still, like you said, there's still a market for it. I'm actually making more now with my, with my very [00:22:00] few clients than I actually was making tutoring English, which in China, like I said, you can make really good money tutoring English. But now with this, it's it's a very valuable skill to have in the, in the online world. space and in today's world.

And so I think it's something that you, you absolutely can do. Like it's, yeah, it's scary. It's messy, but like you literally just got to break it down step by step. And just, if you do conversions for clients, like you're literally just going through the modules, like that is the easy part.

And then once you get that first client, it's kind of like, ah, but you can, you can do it. You really can do it and it's, yeah, it's going to be messy, but there's, there's support, there's tons of resources and you, you just got to do it.

brandi-_1_08-01-2024_090439: And Jamie, I love how you were like, I don't have a ton of experience doing I was tutoring and then the health business. But it's so funny, the other night I was sitting [00:23:00] on the couch and I was like, stay at home parents, whether that's dads, moms, whoever it is, stay at home parents. Literally are project managers.

They're project managers and they do everything, like literally everything I was sitting on the couch and I, I have the business, but then also my dad, my husband's a full time stay at home dad and he does a lot of the doing. But I'm still the project manager. I think it's like, it doesn't, I wanted to be like PC and be like, Oh, a stay at home parents, but no, it's the stay at home mom, the stay at home mom.

No matter if you're a working stay at home mom or what, we are project managers. We manage. But everyone eats, we manage bedtimes, we manage bathtimes, we manage the calendar, and then we're also managing a business. So I think a lot of times if you're listening and you are a mom and you run a household, you have more skills than and you are more equipped to run a business than you ever, ever think you [00:24:00] are.

And so don't let not having corporate jobs or a career outside of the home stop you because I swear as a stay at home mom. You are more equipped to run a business than any man who's never stayed at home and ran a household. I promise. I promise.

jamie_1_08-01-2024_070439: True statement. Yeah. Never say I'm just a stay at home mom or I'm just this take out the jest. You can do this. If you can raise a little person

brandi-_1_08-01-2024_090439: And keep them alive.

jamie_1_08-01-2024_070439: And keep them alive, exactly. Or a few little people. You, you can, you can do it. You can learn I, I have to keep telling myself, I can learn new things, I'm 42 now, and it's okay, I can learn new things. I can do this,

brandi-_1_08-01-2024_090439: things. I love that. Jamie, thank you so much for just sharing your story and all the action you're taking. It's so inspiring. I know it's going to inspire other people to take their own action, no matter if they're just getting started or they've been running their [00:25:00] business for a while and they're like.

Dang, she's charging 1500. What the heck am I doing? Raise your prices, everyone. Raise your prices. And just thank you for being so honest and just sharing with our audience a little bit about just moving forward. And so if anyone wants to connect with you, say, Hey, check you out. So if you want to help inquire about your service because we do have course creators listening, where can they connect with you?

jamie_1_08-01-2024_070439: On Instagram will be the best place. It's at Jamie Lynn, J A M I E L Y N N underscore S K. You'll

jamie_1_08-01-2024_070439: me. One

brandi-_1_08-01-2024_090439: And I love it. Me too. I'm in my DMs. Anyone messages me, they're like, this is not Brandy. And I'm like, it's me. So I think that I always say that if anyone's in my DMs, it's like someone being in my underwear drawer.

And neither one of those is going to happen. Thank you. [00:26:00] So you will always find me in my DMs. Okay. Thank you so much for joining us on the podcast and I cannot wait to see your story just blossom because this is just the beginning.

jamie_1_08-01-2024_070439: Thank you. Thank you so much, Brandy.

brandi-_1_08-01-2024_090439: Y'all, how good was that? Jamie gave us step by step actions that we can take to start and grow our own ad management business. She just took action. She followed the roadmap that was laid out for her in conversions for clients. She showed up. She asked questions. She just was not scared to do the dang thing.

She took messy action and learned along the way. There's so many things that we could all apply to our own business, me included, that Jamie showcased us on what she's doing to grow her business. So if you want to meet people like Jamie, you want to meet, you heard her talk about the bootcamp and you want to know what the heck is this?

What is she talking about? Then head to confidentadmanager. com. [00:27:00] We're about to do our twice a year bootcamp where I'm breaking down how to start your ad management business or grow it. If you already have one and how to land clients without ever. working for free. These four days are value packed, no fluff, all action, just the way I like it.

And we're going to do the dang thing together. And the best part, it's completely free. So head to confidentadmanager. com and register today, and I'll see you in our Confident Ad Manager bootcamp. And until next week, my friend, go out, serve your clients, scale your business, and soar into the success you deserve.
