Ciera:Welcome to the final episode of my Mothers in Business series. I hope you enjoyed these inspiring conversations. If you have, I'd love it if you leave a positive review on the podcast. It means so much and it really helps others to find these stories of confidence and courage. Today I'm excited to introduce Lachelle Larson, the owner of Manna Artisan Bread. She is a true example of what it means to take a leap of faith even when fear and uncertainty are present. Lachelle listened to her gut and she pursued something that she never imagined she'd be doing. I can't wait for you to hear more of her journey. Here she is. Thank you, lachelle, for joining us. Can you tell me what your business is and how long you've been running it? How did you get started?
Lachelle:Yes, I run a sourdough micro bakery and it's called Manna Artisan. I've been doing it for a year and a half. What started it was kind of an interesting thing. One of my neighbors had been doing it for a couple months and she found out she was moving and I just kept having the prompting like oh, I should ask her if she wants to keep it going. We were just in a weird spot with our family so I was just prompting like oh, I should ask her if she wants to keep it going.
Lachelle:We were just in a weird spot with our family, so I was just like, oh, I should ask her, I should ask her.
Ciera:So I did, and we were able to work up an agreement and I purchased it in like April or May of 2023, and I had never made bread before I know, I was so surprised when I found out, because you and I have known each other for years and years and so I knew a little bit about you and I was like, wait, you're doing what? But I also think it's incredible and I also think that you have like the personality to do it. So you've always been a go-getter and so I think it's awesome.
Lachelle:Thank you, bud, for sure, because I'm like the box brownie person. Yeah, I bring the box mix. I don't bring anything above that. It's don't show. I'm like oh.
Ciera:I do. Yes, I do that. So I mean, I'm sure just starting was like one thing that was scary for you, but what, specifically, is like one thing that's been scary for you, that you've had to overcome through this whole process?
Lachelle:um, there's definitely been a number of things, but when I came to my mind, um was imposter syndrome, just showing up at farmer's markets and being like I don't, I don't fit in here. It was a very like I belong here, what am I doing? Shouldn't do this constantly. For months and I mean some people still get that just looking on Instagram for sure that was like the scary thing to try to overcome. I'm just like no, like I can do this, I can put myself out there and you know these group of people that are so creative and so outgoing and so great.
Ciera:I think imposter syndrome is like something that any business owner probably like has to deal with. So how do you? You're at the farmer's markets, right, and you have how many days of like, prep and baking, right now I am baking and prepping four days a week. Okay, so you have three days off, would you say.
Lachelle:Or two because you count saturday, like at the farmer's market, and I just have two days off yeah, so how do you feel like you balance your like work life and your mom life?
Ciera:I mean, it's still kind of on your schedule, which is nice, yeah, but how do you balance all of that, everything you have to do?
Lachelle:um, that's definitely been a learning curve. I'd say like right now it's a lot easier because my kids are in school all day, so I'm able to kind of get most of it done while they're gone. I think it was just so hard at the beginning because I wanted to say yes to everything and it felt like I had a newborn. When you have a newborn, you're like oh, I've got to feed the baby, I've got to change the baby, I've got to put the baby to sleep, like it's the newborn, and then everyone else takes the back seat, like it'll be your turn. When it's your turn, you know, I think right now kind of setting boundaries and like knowing when to say no, I think and I mean I'm not one to say no, but slowly learning of like okay, like we've got a lot going on with soccer games and dance or whatever is going on, so I'm not gonna do as much or do this whatever.
Ciera:I just some boundaries yeah, boundaries are huge in so many areas of life. So what's one piece of advice that you could give somebody who, like, maybe they just like really want to start like their own own business or just a really big goal of something that they've never done before? Do you have a piece of advice that you would give them?
Lachelle:I'd say go for it. If it's constantly on your mind and you can't get rid of the thought, it's always there that's telling you you need to go for it.
Ciera:So stop ignoring it and just do it like figure out whatever steps you need to take, write them down, talk to people, but just go for it and like ignore the noise yeah, and you're like the perfect example of that, because I just think you know, a year and a half ago you probably wouldn't have thought that you would be in like you're, because you're in a little local market that we have here, and like you deliver the bread there and they sell it for you. You probably wouldn't have. I mean, I would imagine a year and a half ago you were like not seeing yourself here oh not at all.
Lachelle:And like even when I talked to like my mom or my husband about it and they're like you don't have time for this, because at the time when this all started I was working a different job and, you know, still had a son at home, like not in school full-time, and I was like you don't have time, you can't do this, and like so I just started crying.
Ciera:I was like I figure I'd make 200 little bread fine and you have, and that's what I think is so amazing and admirable and so like. I think that you're like the perfect example of just like going for it. If it it's on your mind, if it's in your heart, just going for it, yeah.
Lachelle:If you're having dreams like you just got to do it Well.
Ciera:thank you for sharing your a little bit of your story. Where could people connect with you online?
Lachelle:Yeah, I am most active on Instagram. So manna, M-A-N-N-A dot artisan A-R-T-I-S-A-N, and that's the easiest way.
Ciera:Okay, and I will link that in the show notes so they can find me here too. And then if anyone is local to Southern Utah, where can they come in and try some of your delicious bread?
Lachelle:Right now it's easier to order from me personally. Um, with holidays and a few things coming up, I don't know if I can be at the farmer's market and then fried fruit market where I'm at once a week is gonna be closing in three weeks, so, um, just for the season. Um, so yeah, order from me personally and I deliver. So if I'm brave, I'll knock on your door and I can be you bonus.
Ciera:Yeah, I love it. Drop and run. Well, thank you so much, lachelle, and yeah, your bread is delicious. I think my favorite is the oh, I'm probably not going to call it the right thing, but it was like the cookies and cream one, and, and it comes with cream cheese. That one comes with, like, the white chocolate glaze. Oh yeah, the white chocolate glaze. That's right.
Lachelle:Yes, it's so good, so it's so good, that was my favorite, so I'm glad you like it too, cause everyone's like cookies and bread up against vomit.
Ciera:Oh, you have to try it. Don't knock it. Yeah, it's so good, so okay. Well, thank you so much, lachelle. Thank you, thanks for listening.
