Sirens, Slammers and Service - A podcast for Female First Responders
As a former correctional officer in Alberta for almost 2 decades and the founder of Blue Line Fitness Testing which provides law enforcement fitness testing and wellness workshops, I started this podcast as a way for female first responders to be able to share their stories including the trials, tribulations and triumphs of their daily work. Our episodes cover female correctional officers and caseworkers, military personnel, female paramedics, firefighters and dispatchers, as well as feature female Edmonton Police Service officers, drug dog handlers and female tactical team members. I want to showcase the unique perspectives, skill sets and personalities that women bring to a first responder career and work to encourage more women to apply for these careers and step up to learn more about what we do.

We wrap up SEASON 9 of Sirens, Slammers, and Service, with a ❗️
Nikki Cloutier sits down with Margie Lynes, a seasoned Alberta Sheriff with over 20 years of frontline and behind-the-scenes experience. From the fitness industry to law enforcement, Margie’s path was anything but predictable — and her story proves that there’s no single “right” way into the job, just the right mindset.
Margie walks us through her impressive journey through various branches of the Alberta Sheriffs and CAPS, from Field Training Officer and Defensive Tactics Instructor to Intelligence Unit and now, Sheriff Recruitment. She shares what it’s really like working in the Law Courts, Cell Block, and Transport Units, and how public scrutiny and customer service are baked into the role more than most people realize.
Together, Nikki and Margie dig deep into: Why mentorship among women in law enforcement is critical — and still far too rare The physical demands of the job and why they should be assessed sooner in the hiring process The hard truths about today’s applicant pool and what hopeful candidates need to hear The value of thorough application prep — and how not being ready can cost you your shot
This episode is part cautionary tale, part recruitment rally, and all real talk. Whether you're considering a career as a Sheriff or supporting someone who is, Margie offers wisdom you won’t find in a brochure.
Key takeaway? There’s more to the badge than boots and belts — it’s about judgment, service, strength, and staying power.
