Episode #34: How to Change Your Mindset to Improve Your Performance
What would you say if I told you that you could literally change your mind and have a direct impact on your attitude, motivation, energy, and more specifically your performance?
That you could proactively do something that would increase your level of performance at sports, education, and really any activity?
And that there is a rather straightforward way to do this?
This podcast is all about how you can harness your mindset to improve your performance.
In this podcast we will cover:
- What a mindset is
- How it is set
- Why it is so powerful for performance
- How you can use it to improve your performance
- Provide you with a simple 4-step framework for changing or setting your mindset
Summary of Key Points
A mindset is a core belief or assumption we have about something that leads us to a set of expectations, explanations, and goals.
There are 12 specific ways that different research projects have shown to be positively impacted by changing your mindset:
- It can improve your focus and productivity, so you get more work done
- Your motivation and attitude
- Achieve higher quality work
- Achieve that higher quality with fewer resources (i.e. they are more efficient)
- Can handle more tasks
- Handle challenges more effectively
- Bounce back from major setbacks more efficiently and effectively
- It can impact whether and how you learn
- How you handle negative feedback and still perform well
- How you manage stress, and whether you can use stress to your advantage
- How resilient you are
- Whether and how you learn from mistakes
From a neuroscience perspective, we know that a mindset can impact:
- The emotion attached to a memory
- The neural connections
- The release of neurochemicals
In the podcast, we go into detail in describing a 4-part model that can help you change your mindset. The 4 steps include:
- Understand - Understand what your perspective is on this activity, situation, etc.
- Change - Figure out what you want to change it to (We discuss the trigger, desired mindset, and desired emotion)
- New Link - Link your new desired emotion and response to the specific action/trigger
- Practice and reward - The more you practice the new mindset and linkage, the more likely you will create the change you desire.
