🔍 Main Discussion Highlights

  • Why 70–80% of jobs are found through networking - not job boards
  • How to identify industries that align with your interests and skills
  • Using tools like O*NET and the Occupational Outlook Handbook to explore career paths
  • Search strategies to find companies by location, size, and focus
  • Building a list of target employers and tracking your outreach
  • Crafting thoughtful LinkedIn messages to initiate career conversations

Tips for searching online for companies:

  • Search by industry + location. Try phrases like:

“marketing firms near Naperville,” “manufacturing companies in DuPage County,” or “nonprofits in Chicago working with youth.”

  • Add size filters like “small business,” “startup,” or “Fortune 500” to refine your results.
  • Use quotation marks to find exact phrases (“graphic design agency”) or minus signs to remove results (e.g., “graphic design agency -freelance”).
  • Look at directories and associations. Industry groups often list members—like “Illinois Technology Association members” or “Chamber of Commerce directory.”
  • Use Map apps and LinkedIn Company Search to visually explore who’s in your area—you might be surprised how many opportunities exist close to home.

📝 Pro Tip

Instead of asking “Who’s hiring?”, ask “Who’s doing work I admire?” That mindset shift can lead to more fulfilling and aligned career opportunities.

Welcome to the Career Ready podcast.

00;00;03;00 - 00;00;06;06
Learn about resumes, cover
letters, LinkedIn, interviewing

00;00;06;06 - 00;00;09;23
and all the things you need to be career
ready with the career Services Center

00;00;09;23 - 00;00;10;28
at College of DuPage.

00;00;10;28 - 00;00;12;29
I'm one of your hosts, Rebecca Harrington.

00;00;12;29 - 00;00;16;00
Later in today's episode,
I'm going to lead the conversation

00;00;16;00 - 00;00;20;04
talking about a different way
to job search by company and industry.

00;00;20;09 - 00;00;22;09
And I'm your other host, Jordan Ruprecht.

00;00;22;09 - 00;00;25;00
I'm going to start our episode today
by sharing some information

00;00;25;00 - 00;00;27;22
about a great resource
that we have available, which is jobs.

00;00;27;22 - 00;00;28;11
Get Hired.

00;00;28;11 - 00;00;32;13
So over the years, we've talked about
our electronic job board jobs get hired.

00;00;32;17 - 00;00;34;25
And with this season's
focus being on the job search,

00;00;34;25 - 00;00;37;25
what better time to recap
some of those features that it offers?

00;00;37;29 - 00;00;39;15
For those who aren't familiar jobs,

00;00;39;15 - 00;00;43;14
Get Hired is a free job board specific
to the College of DuPage community.

00;00;43;19 - 00;00;47;08
Employers can use this platform
to post their positions for students,

00;00;47;08 - 00;00;51;09
alumni, and community members of DuPage
County to view and apply for.

00;00;51;14 - 00;00;55;12
It's a great way to discover a variety
of local opportunities, such as part time

00;00;55;12 - 00;00;59;24
internships, seasonal and full time roles
within the main Schools jobs tab.

00;00;59;25 - 00;01;01;05
There are a couple different ways

00;01;01;05 - 00;01;04;05
to search for positions
as you're doing a targeted job search.

00;01;04;05 - 00;01;06;04
So one way is searching by keyword.

00;01;06;04 - 00;01;09;23
This is where you can plug in a specific
search term to yield results.

00;01;09;28 - 00;01;12;03
So if there's a local employer
that you're interested

00;01;12;03 - 00;01;13;29
in, you can search by that company name

00;01;13;29 - 00;01;17;01
to see if they've any open positions
posted on that job board.

00;01;17;05 - 00;01;20;07
Another way that you can search
is by filtering on job targets.

00;01;20;08 - 00;01;23;11
So using the advanced search feature
you can narrow down

00;01;23;11 - 00;01;25;23
and select different industries
that you're interested in.

00;01;25;23 - 00;01;27;12
This will help you narrow
down your results

00;01;27;12 - 00;01;30;17
to only include companies
that have identified with that industry.

00;01;30;21 - 00;01;33;02
Both of these are great ways
to do a targeted job search.

00;01;33;02 - 00;01;37;20
By narrowing down your parameters
to get to a specific company or industry,

00;01;37;20 - 00;01;38;13
which is going to fall

00;01;38;13 - 00;01;41;17
into our competition,
to say thank you for the lead.

00;01;41;21 - 00;01;42;07
Yeah.

00;01;42;07 - 00;01;45;14
It, speaking more broadly
to get hired, just like other job boards.

00;01;45;14 - 00;01;48;22
It allows you to search by job type,
major location,

00;01;48;22 - 00;01;51;03
so you're able to customize your search
even more.

00;01;51;03 - 00;01;51;26
And for our listeners

00;01;51;26 - 00;01;55;08
who don't attend College of DuPage
or live in the DuPage County area,

00;01;55;13 - 00;01;58;09
I do recommend seeing if your local school
or community offers

00;01;58;09 - 00;02;01;21
a job board so that you can find positions
in your target geographic area.

00;02;01;26 - 00;02;04;01
I love that point. That's so important.

00;02;04;01 - 00;02;07;18
I never had thought about that
until I started to work here.

00;02;07;25 - 00;02;09;20
You know, you think of indeed.

00;02;09;20 - 00;02;12;15
We think of all the big job
boards, LinkedIn.

00;02;12;15 - 00;02;15;18
But your local community colleges

00;02;15;23 - 00;02;18;22
will often have a local job board,

00;02;18;22 - 00;02;24;09
and those jobs are maybe for, you know,
sometimes it can be big companies,

00;02;24;09 - 00;02;27;08
but it often can also be
maybe smaller local employers

00;02;27;08 - 00;02;29;21
that don't advertise their jobs
or other places.

00;02;29;21 - 00;02;34;09
Also, your resume or your application
is much more likely to be seen

00;02;34;14 - 00;02;37;14
if you're applying through that local job
board.

00;02;37;15 - 00;02;40;06
Absolutely.
I hope I go on to get hired every day.

00;02;40;06 - 00;02;44;01
Interview, review employers
and jobs postings, and it's exciting

00;02;44;01 - 00;02;46;14
to see all the activity
drumming up in the community.

00;02;46;14 - 00;02;49;18
And I always point students here
because they do have an advantage.

00;02;49;23 - 00;02;51;07
When you have these local employers

00;02;51;07 - 00;02;54;25
who want to hire from our community,
what better way to connect to each other?

00;02;55;00 - 00;02;55;28
And, you know, it's not.

00;02;55;28 - 00;02;59;25
Sometimes it's going on a website, but
other times it's like email your resume

00;02;59;26 - 00;03;05;11
to Maria at, you know, local company.com,
you know, like it's like it's

00;03;05;11 - 00;03;11;27
such a more personal process than we see,
you know, with the bigger job boards.

00;03;11;27 - 00;03;12;25
Sure. Out there.

00;03;12;25 - 00;03;15;07
So yeah. Awesome. Thank you for that.

00;03;15;07 - 00;03;17;21
So let's kind of dive in a little bit
where you heard Darren

00;03;17;21 - 00;03;20;29
mentioned, narrowing things down
by companies and industries.

00;03;21;04 - 00;03;25;08
And I think we don't often think about
that when we're doing a job search.

00;03;25;08 - 00;03;28;19
You know, most people start their job
search by typing in titles

00;03;28;25 - 00;03;32;04
into a job board,
you know, marketing assistant, I.T.

00;03;32;04 - 00;03;33;27
support lab technician.

00;03;33;27 - 00;03;35;28
But what if we flipped that?

00;03;35;28 - 00;03;39;17
What if instead of looking for jobs,
we started by

00;03;39;22 - 00;03;43;07
by looking for companies and industries?

00;03;43;11 - 00;03;44;21
It's one of the smartest ways

00;03;44;21 - 00;03;48;12
to find opportunities that you might
never seen a regular job title search.

00;03;48;16 - 00;03;51;16
So we've talked about this before
on the podcast.

00;03;51;18 - 00;03;56;24
So many jobs, like 70% of jobs,
like a majority percent of jobs

00;03;56;29 - 00;04;00;09
are found through networking or referrals,
not on job boards.

00;04;00;15 - 00;04;05;02
Not to say that the jobs are posted
on the job boards, but so oftentimes

00;04;05;02 - 00;04;09;23
when someone is looking for
for someone to hire,

00;04;09;28 - 00;04;13;25
you know, the first thing they're going to
do is see if anyone at their own company

00;04;13;25 - 00;04;17;19
or someone in their company knows somebody
that would be a good fit for that job.

00;04;17;23 - 00;04;21;18
And so, you know,
when you find organizations that interest

00;04;21;18 - 00;04;25;06
you instead of looking for the job title,
if you're looking for a company,

00;04;25;11 - 00;04;28;16
you could start connecting
with the people at that company.

00;04;28;21 - 00;04;31;14
You know, maybe you already know people
that work at that company,

00;04;31;14 - 00;04;35;15
or someone who knows someone
you know, knows somebody at that company.

00;04;35;20 - 00;04;39;18
And so then when a role comes up,
they'll think of you.

00;04;39;24 - 00;04;40;06
Right?

00;04;40;06 - 00;04;42;25
And so then you find out about those kind

00;04;42;25 - 00;04;47;00
of hidden jobs
right before they even, become available.

00;04;47;04 - 00;04;50;14
So again,
we're talking about identifying companies

00;04;50;18 - 00;04;54;08
so that you're, first of all, you're
going to maybe find opportunities that

00;04;54;08 - 00;04;57;16
that you wouldn't find
just by looking for the title.

00;04;57;16 - 00;04;59;09
And we'll talk more about that
in a little bit.

00;04;59;09 - 00;05;04;07
But it's also about identifying people
you can network with at those companies

00;05;04;07 - 00;05;08;08
so that you get access to those jobs,
even before they're posted.

00;05;08;14 - 00;05;11;25
And it's also a way
just to help you target your applications.

00;05;11;25 - 00;05;14;22
I mean, we how many times,
Jordan, have you had people come in

00;05;14;22 - 00;05;17;22
and they're like,
I've sent 100 resumes very often.

00;05;17;22 - 00;05;18;08
Yeah.

00;05;18;08 - 00;05;20;29
And I hear from no, I haven't heard back
from any of them. Right.

00;05;20;29 - 00;05;24;00
So this instead of sending out,
you know, 50

00;05;24;00 - 00;05;29;10
generic resumes send ten tailored ones
that show you get the mission,

00;05;29;10 - 00;05;31;19
the culture
and the industry trends like that show

00;05;31;19 - 00;05;33;22
that you're really interested
in that company.

00;05;33;22 - 00;05;37;19
So let's start by talking about
how to research industries.

00;05;37;23 - 00;05;40;04
So deciding on what industry
you want to work in

00;05;40;04 - 00;05;43;16
can make the job search easier,
can make that company search easier.

00;05;43;21 - 00;05;46;27
With many careers you can choose
what industry you want to work in.

00;05;46;27 - 00;05;50;23
For example, if you're in accounting
or marketing or IT or HR,

00;05;50;28 - 00;05;55;26
our if you studied in the humanities,
you can work in almost any industry.

00;05;56;01 - 00;05;57;15
You know,
some are a little more challenging.

00;05;57;15 - 00;06;01;01
For example, if you're in nursing, I mean,
you're likely to be in health care.

00;06;01;05 - 00;06;04;28
But even within health care,
that's a large industry with a lot of

00;06;04;28 - 00;06;06;02
sub industries.

00;06;06;02 - 00;06;08;25
So you have to decide,
do you want to work in a hospital?

00;06;08;25 - 00;06;11;09
Do you want to work in a surgery center
or a nursing home?

00;06;11;09 - 00;06;15;17
You know, so again, if I'm in marketing,
I could be working, you know, in

00;06;15;17 - 00;06;19;11
higher education, I could be working
in the accounting field.

00;06;19;11 - 00;06;21;02
I could be working in the movie industry.

00;06;21;02 - 00;06;22;29
I mean, that's what we mean
by industry, right?

00;06;22;29 - 00;06;25;12
There's so many,
so many choices out there.

00;06;25;12 - 00;06;29;09
So when we do, a search for an industry,
there's a couple tools

00;06;29;09 - 00;06;30;16
that can be helpful to us.

00;06;30;16 - 00;06;31;23
We love on that.

00;06;31;23 - 00;06;33;22
We've talked about on that on this podcast
before.

00;06;33;22 - 00;06;36;29
That's a website
you can just do on E and you'll find it.

00;06;37;06 - 00;06;39;07
And, and that's
the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

00;06;39;07 - 00;06;42;18
And then they also have another website
called the Occupational Outlook Handbook.

00;06;42;23 - 00;06;45;29
And what I love about it
is that you can like it will literally

00;06;45;29 - 00;06;48;29
give you a list of industries
and information about them,

00;06;49;04 - 00;06;52;01
along with careers in that area.

00;06;52;01 - 00;06;57;09
But what's also nice is it'll let you,
know if those are growing industries

00;06;57;09 - 00;07;01;20
so they'll actually have like a sun
icon on them, you know, that kind of show

00;07;01;20 - 00;07;02;25
like, oh, it's growing.

00;07;02;25 - 00;07;05;11
So things like health care, green energy,
right.

00;07;05;11 - 00;07;09;24
Logistics, tech services, education,
those are all seeing steady growth.

00;07;10;00 - 00;07;11;13
So if you're looking to

00;07;11;13 - 00;07;14;19
to you're like, well, where is an industry
where I can get hired?

00;07;14;24 - 00;07;16;26
That might be something to think about.

00;07;16;26 - 00;07;18;19
But you of course,
you also want to find something

00;07;18;19 - 00;07;20;05
that you're interested in as well.

00;07;20;05 - 00;07;22;17
Make sure that you're reading the news,
right.

00;07;22;17 - 00;07;26;20
Looking on websites, looking in apps,
you know, look at the business sections,

00;07;26;20 - 00;07;30;13
local economic reports
or even LinkedIn's top companies

00;07;30;15 - 00;07;33;15
can reveal
what industries are hiring and why.

00;07;33;16 - 00;07;35;14
And of course,
pay attention to your region.

00;07;35;14 - 00;07;38;00
What's hot in one region may not be hot.

00;07;38;00 - 00;07;38;24
And another.

00;07;38;24 - 00;07;42;15
So for example, in the Midwest,
there's a lot more manufacturing.

00;07;42;21 - 00;07;45;19
If you want to be in the movies,
you got to go to LA.

00;07;45;19 - 00;07;48;28
I remember I met with a student once
who wanted to work in forestry,

00;07;49;03 - 00;07;52;06
and I'm like, well,
you do know you'll probably have to move.

00;07;52;06 - 00;07;55;26
And he's like, yes, I understand this
animal, but we have forests here.

00;07;55;26 - 00;07;58;08
But not really.
Probably the kind of forest you want.

00;07;58;08 - 00;08;01;28
So. So, you know, it can depend
like where you what you want to do.

00;08;02;03 - 00;08;06;03
And then once you find an industry
you like, you want to learn its language.

00;08;06;08 - 00;08;10;12
You know, what roles exist, what skills
are in demand, what challenges it faces.

00;08;10;17 - 00;08;14;17
And not only will this help you understand
if this is an industry you want to work

00;08;14;17 - 00;08;15;28
in, but it also then helps

00;08;15;28 - 00;08;19;22
you tailor your resume and tailor
what you talk about in your interview.

00;08;19;27 - 00;08;23;05
And I wanted to just stop for a second
here and talk with you, Jordan,

00;08;23;05 - 00;08;24;14
because I think we've

00;08;24;14 - 00;08;28;24
both had work history where we've worked
in different industries, you know,

00;08;28;29 - 00;08;32;21
doing the same job or similar jobs,
but working in different industries.

00;08;32;21 - 00;08;33;09
So, like,

00;08;33;09 - 00;08;37;11
what do you think about, like, what's
with, you know, why does industry matter?

00;08;37;18 - 00;08;41;24
And you know, how how can you
you know, I don't know how do you find one

00;08;41;24 - 00;08;43;11
that you're interested in? Sure.

00;08;43;11 - 00;08;45;08
I think you really got to do
your research.

00;08;45;08 - 00;08;46;14
What I've learned from my own

00;08;46;14 - 00;08;50;06
personal experience, like you mentioned,
doing the same job at different companies,

00;08;50;06 - 00;08;52;20
both HR recruiting, but, like,
I look different,

00;08;52;20 - 00;08;54;24
you know, with different companies
and different industries.

00;08;54;24 - 00;08;58;21
So really, the more you learn, the more
you know about the different industries.

00;08;58;21 - 00;09;00;20
You get to know
their unique characteristics,

00;09;00;20 - 00;09;04;16
you get to learn their nuances
and then learn to to see if it's a fit.

00;09;04;16 - 00;09;08;12
I think it'll help you feel a little bit
more prepared and help kind of match

00;09;08;12 - 00;09;11;17
to what you know, what your passions are,
what your interests are,

00;09;11;21 - 00;09;14;12
and really just feel more confident,
more prepared.

00;09;14;12 - 00;09;19;02
When you go into the application process
or going into starting a new job

00;09;19;02 - 00;09;22;09
because you have a little bit more back
knowledge, backstory, knowledge,

00;09;22;14 - 00;09;24;09
and kind of what to expect going forward.

00;09;24;09 - 00;09;27;06
Yeah, I remember, you know,
I started my career

00;09;27;06 - 00;09;33;21
working in the accounting industry in HR
and that was that was very interesting.

00;09;33;21 - 00;09;36;21
The it was, there was a lot of money, sir.

00;09;36;22 - 00;09;39;18
They, they send you a lot more trips
or a lot, a lot, a lot of stuff.

00;09;39;18 - 00;09;43;08
But it was but it was also very,
fast paced and there was a lot going on.

00;09;43;15 - 00;09;46;01
And then I was in payroll,
payroll industry.

00;09;46;01 - 00;09;48;28
So companies that process
payrolls, and HR,

00;09;48;28 - 00;09;51;28
you know, and again,
that's like has its own laws.

00;09;51;28 - 00;09;53;24
Right. And all the things around it.

00;09;53;24 - 00;09;56;29
And then I worked in the jewelry industry,
which was super interesting

00;09;56;29 - 00;10;00;13
because I got to buy a lot of jewelry,
which was also maybe a negative,

00;10;00;15 - 00;10;02;00
but maybe a negative for me.

00;10;02;00 - 00;10;05;01
Yeah, but, but, but but also more volatile

00;10;05;01 - 00;10;08;23
as far as layoffs, you know, compared
to those other two industries.

00;10;09;00 - 00;10;12;15
And then now I'm in higher education,
which is by far my favorite.

00;10;12;19 - 00;10;17;00
You know, like now I feel like, I'm home,
you know, and I think when I think back,

00;10;17;00 - 00;10;18;08
I always kind of wanted

00;10;18;08 - 00;10;22;06
to work in education, and I, I,
I'm not saying that I regret working

00;10;22;06 - 00;10;25;14
in those other industries,
but I think if I had taken a little time

00;10;25;14 - 00;10;28;25
at the beginning
and really kind of explored like, well,

00;10;28;25 - 00;10;32;29
okay, could you work in that industry,
how how could you work in that industry?

00;10;32;29 - 00;10;35;29
And, and, you know,
maybe I would have gotten here sooner,

00;10;36;02 - 00;10;39;09
you know, or discover opportunities
that you didn't think about initially.

00;10;39;16 - 00;10;41;02
Yes. You so that's the.

00;10;41;02 - 00;10;42;27
Yeah, that's the other thing.

00;10;42;27 - 00;10;46;19
You know, it's like what jobs are called,

00;10;46;24 - 00;10;49;11
it can be different
depending on the industry

00;10;49;11 - 00;10;50;22
can be different depending on the company.

00;10;50;22 - 00;10;53;25
So and we'll get to that I, I have, I have
I have that coming up.

00;10;53;25 - 00;10;55;12
But let's, let's, let's move on.

00;10;55;12 - 00;10;59;02
So we've got maybe an industry
or a couple industries right

00;10;59;02 - 00;11;00;07
that we're thinking about.

00;11;00;07 - 00;11;04;08
Then let's talk about
how to find companies in those industries.

00;11;04;15 - 00;11;07;06
So you might be looking
for small local businesses

00;11;07;06 - 00;11;10;03
or large national organizations
or something in the middle.

00;11;10;03 - 00;11;13;23
And again, only you can know, right,
which of those you want.

00;11;13;29 - 00;11;16;17
So when we talk about internships
and the importance of that,

00;11;16;17 - 00;11;18;12
when we talk about doing
informational interviews,

00;11;18;12 - 00;11;22;09
like all of those things are to help you
figure out, do I like working

00;11;22;09 - 00;11;25;09
for a large organization
or do I want something smaller?

00;11;25;10 - 00;11;29;02
And so having that industry in mind
is going to help you so you can search.

00;11;29;02 - 00;11;29;27
You can just do even

00;11;29;27 - 00;11;34;03
just like a regular internet search,
you know, search by industry and location.

00;11;34;03 - 00;11;38;22
So something like marketing firms
near me, right, or near my town,

00;11;38;27 - 00;11;42;15
manufacturing companies in my county,
nonprofits

00;11;42;15 - 00;11;45;16
in, you know,
the Chicago area, working with youth.

00;11;45;21 - 00;11;47;10
And then you'll get results.

00;11;47;10 - 00;11;48;22
You might get Yelp results.

00;11;48;22 - 00;11;51;12
You might just get, map results.

00;11;51;12 - 00;11;52;11
And then you can start

00;11;52;11 - 00;11;55;10
looking at those companies
and seeing what you can learn about them,

00;11;55;14 - 00;11;59;10
you know, maybe have some size
filters in there for small business

00;11;59;10 - 00;12;02;28
or startups, maybe you're looking
for fortune 500 companies.

00;12;03;02 - 00;12;06;25
You can use quotation marks to find exact
phrases.

00;12;07;00 - 00;12;09;17
You can use minus signs to remove results.

00;12;09;17 - 00;12;12;17
So for example,
maybe I want to look for quote graphic

00;12;12;17 - 00;12;16;29
design agency, but maybe
I don't want to do freelance work.

00;12;16;29 - 00;12;20;19
So I might do graphic design
agency minus freelance.

00;12;20;25 - 00;12;23;15
By the way,
I am going to put in the show notes

00;12;23;15 - 00;12;26;10
some of these examples
of how you can do searches,

00;12;26;10 - 00;12;29;10
because I know I'm just reading them,
and that I don't want you to feel

00;12;29;10 - 00;12;30;19
like you have to take notes out there.

00;12;30;19 - 00;12;32;18
So I'll put them in the show notes. Okay.

00;12;32;18 - 00;12;35;26
We can also look at directories
and associations.

00;12;35;26 - 00;12;38;26
So industry groups often list members.

00;12;39;01 - 00;12;42;21
So for example,
the American Library Association,

00;12;42;21 - 00;12;46;22
you know, would have a list of libraries
or Illinois Technology Association

00;12;46;22 - 00;12;50;13
is going to have list of technology
companies, even chambers of commerce

00;12;50;17 - 00;12;53;18
are going to have directories
of local businesses.

00;12;53;23 - 00;12;56;17
As I mentioned, the maps apps are great.

00;12;56;17 - 00;12;58;23
Just to look at companies, it would know.

00;12;58;23 - 00;13;01;12
Okay, Jordan, I just have to mention this
for some reason.

00;13;01;12 - 00;13;05;05
Last night my husband and he started
looking on like, just like Apple

00;13;05;05 - 00;13;09;03
Maps and was like, why are there companies
in our neighborhood?

00;13;09;08 - 00;13;11;13
I'm guessing they're like home businesses.

00;13;11;13 - 00;13;12;15
I've noticed that too.

00;13;12;15 - 00;13;15;00
Okay. It's starting to show up now. Okay.

00;13;15;00 - 00;13;18;12
So yeah, anyways, if you just look on maps
nearby, you'll find companies

00;13;18;12 - 00;13;21;12
that, you know, maybe it's closer than you
think, maybe closer than you think.

00;13;21;14 - 00;13;23;14
But anyways,
that'll help you visually explore.

00;13;23;14 - 00;13;25;24
And I think sometimes too,
that makes it seem exciting. Sure.

00;13;25;24 - 00;13;27;16
Like, oh, there's a lot of places nearby.

00;13;27;16 - 00;13;30;07
Me and again,
it can sound like a lot, I know,

00;13;30;07 - 00;13;34;01
but even if you just spend like 15 minutes
using these tools,

00;13;34;01 - 00;13;35;04
you're going to end up

00;13;35;04 - 00;13;38;23
with a targeted list of employers
that you can do more research on.

00;13;38;28 - 00;13;43;06
And, you know,
maybe pick 10 to 20 organizations

00;13;43;06 - 00;13;47;00
where, you know, these seem like places
you'd be really interested in

00;13;47;05 - 00;13;50;20
and then do some more research on them,
look at them on LinkedIn,

00;13;50;24 - 00;13;53;14
look them up on Indy,
look them up on Glassdoor,

00;13;53;14 - 00;13;57;15
which is almost like a Yelp review website
for companies, you know,

00;13;57;15 - 00;14;02;09
what's the size, their growth,
their culture, look at their website,

00;14;02;09 - 00;14;03;07
look at their mission

00;14;03;07 - 00;14;07;15
statements, look at their careers
page to see what kind of jobs they have.

00;14;07;21 - 00;14;11;08
And really some smaller companies,
maybe only posts or opportunities there.

00;14;11;14 - 00;14;13;17
And make sure that you're adding
those local employers

00;14;13;17 - 00;14;16;27
because I think, there's often
more there than we think.

00;14;17;02 - 00;14;20;11
And then keep notes
right on their mission,

00;14;20;11 - 00;14;23;11
their values, you know, ones
that you really connect with.

00;14;23;11 - 00;14;28;19
I think especially the young generations
today, you know, like, you know, like, we,

00;14;28;21 - 00;14;33;03
we want companies that we care about
that are doing work that we care about.

00;14;33;03 - 00;14;35;10
Right. So, so take a look at that.

00;14;35;10 - 00;14;36;29
This is kind of what we were talking about
earlier.

00;14;36;29 - 00;14;38;16
Pay attention to job titles.

00;14;38;16 - 00;14;42;18
So oftentimes what we think
are the job titles we're looking for

00;14;42;18 - 00;14;44;26
are actually called something
totally different.

00;14;44;26 - 00;14;45;23
Did you notice,

00;14;45;23 - 00;14;50;00
have you noticed that like an HR like, oh,
they call jobs like weird names.

00;14;50;00 - 00;14;51;07
You're like, what is that?

00;14;51;07 - 00;14;57;07
I went from being talent operations
to early career to talent acquisition.

00;14;57;07 - 00;14;57;27
Absolutely.

00;14;57;27 - 00;15;00;29
I all the same job,
but it just different, different titles.

00;15;01;05 - 00;15;04;18
So going back to the very first thing
that we're talking about in the section,

00;15;04;18 - 00;15;08;24
it's like if you went
and just googled like talent acquisition

00;15;08;24 - 00;15;12;12
or recruiter, you're not going to get
like the same results.

00;15;12;12 - 00;15;12;29
Yeah.

00;15;12;29 - 00;15;17;18
You know, so sometimes again,
looking for the company that you want,

00;15;17;23 - 00;15;21;23
then you'll just naturally see
what those different job titles are.

00;15;21;27 - 00;15;24;11
Yeah. And then so then we shift.

00;15;24;11 - 00;15;24;17
Right.

00;15;24;17 - 00;15;27;18
So, so we find these companies
that we're interested in

00;15;27;23 - 00;15;30;22
not only are you going
to find out those job titles, but you can

00;15;30;22 - 00;15;34;13
also then look to see
are there contacts you could reach out to.

00;15;34;20 - 00;15;37;09
Maybe alumni
that also went to your school.

00;15;37;09 - 00;15;42;06
Maybe, you know, other people on LinkedIn,
maybe you're your internship supervisor,

00;15;42;06 - 00;15;46;06
know somebody that works at that company
or knows somebody that works

00;15;46;06 - 00;15;48;26
at that company. Right, or knows
somebody that knows somebody. Right.

00;15;48;26 - 00;15;52;22
You know, the idea is,
or you can also see if these companies

00;15;52;22 - 00;15;55;23
have internship programs,
or early career paths.

00;15;55;28 - 00;15;59;08
So this is kind of your personal
opportunity tracker, right?

00;15;59;08 - 00;16;03;18
You're not just waiting for postings,
you're proactively managing your job

00;16;03;18 - 00;16;04;06
search.

00;16;04;06 - 00;16;06;24
And I just before
I've said a lot of things.

00;16;06;24 - 00;16;08;23
What are your thoughts about this idea
of, like,

00;16;08;23 - 00;16;11;23
looking for companies
instead of just relying on job boards?

00;16;11;24 - 00;16;13;08
Yeah. No, I absolutely agree.

00;16;13;08 - 00;16;16;22
I even my my most recent job search
and coming here at College of DuPage,

00;16;16;22 - 00;16;20;04
I was looking at the college
to page career site for for some time.

00;16;20;04 - 00;16;20;27
I'm not going to lie.

00;16;20;27 - 00;16;21;09
You know, it's

00;16;21;09 - 00;16;24;19
not every day career services
specialist roles are posted, so it is not.

00;16;24;19 - 00;16;27;25
So yeah, I think that kind of goes into
my point here is that,

00;16;27;25 - 00;16;31;22
you know, I want this to be,
encouraging this to be part of a routine.

00;16;31;22 - 00;16;35;01
You know, I think that looking
just once at a company website,

00;16;35;01 - 00;16;39;13
I don't want you to ever write any one off
if you don't see that dream opportunity

00;16;39;13 - 00;16;40;06
right away.

00;16;40;06 - 00;16;42;00
So, you know, make, make note of this.

00;16;42;00 - 00;16;43;12
Check back regularly.

00;16;43;12 - 00;16;46;04
Check back on social media,
the careers website.

00;16;46;04 - 00;16;49;03
Because you never really know when
the opportunity is going to be posted.

00;16;49;03 - 00;16;50;11
Especially knowing,

00;16;50;11 - 00;16;53;15
too, that companies and industries
they hire at different times of the year.

00;16;53;19 - 00;16;56;23
So just being ready and being prepared,
and not just writing it off

00;16;56;23 - 00;16;59;18
after just taking one glance
and not seeing what you're looking for.

00;16;59;18 - 00;17;00;22
Yeah, I love that.

00;17;00;22 - 00;17;02;16
I think that's really important.

00;17;02;16 - 00;17;03;23
I think, you know.

00;17;03;23 - 00;17;03;29
Yeah.

00;17;03;29 - 00;17;07;16
Like you said, following them,
you know, saving the book, marking them

00;17;07;16 - 00;17;10;21
and make it a routine
that every few weeks, every month

00;17;10;21 - 00;17;13;04
or so, you're going to go and check out
that company,

00;17;13;04 - 00;17;16;13
you know, other things than is connecting
with people on LinkedIn

00;17;16;13 - 00;17;20;06
that are working at that company
that you have any kind of connection with,

00;17;20;12 - 00;17;23;11
engage with posts
that the company is leaving.

00;17;23;11 - 00;17;23;22
Right.

00;17;23;22 - 00;17;24;18
Not so them they're,

00;17;24;18 - 00;17;28;17
they're making on LinkedIn, for example,
you know, or the people that work there

00;17;28;17 - 00;17;32;10
in the departments, you know, maybe engage
with their, their posts,

00;17;32;15 - 00;17;35;15
and not just likes,
but actually like leaving a comment on it.

00;17;35;20 - 00;17;38;22
And really,
this is something we know is scary,

00;17;38;22 - 00;17;42;01
but it's, I mean, it's scary for me, but,
but we have to do it,

00;17;42;09 - 00;17;47;27
which is reach out to alumni or staff
that is either in the area

00;17;47;27 - 00;17;50;18
you're looking to work or again,
you have some sort of connection with.

00;17;50;18 - 00;17;53;21
And especially if you're a student,
don't be scared to do this.

00;17;53;26 - 00;17;56;20
Just send them, a message. Right. Hi.

00;17;56;20 - 00;18;00;29
I'm a student at this college
exploring careers in this industry.

00;18;00;29 - 00;18;02;17
I saw that you work at this company.

00;18;02;17 - 00;18;05;23
Would you be open to a quick
15 minute conversation about what you do

00;18;05;28 - 00;18;07;04
so you're not asking for a job.

00;18;07;04 - 00;18;09;09
You're not asking for anything special
other

00;18;09;09 - 00;18;11;26
than just a super quick conversation.

00;18;11;26 - 00;18;13;04
Now this is 15 minutes.

00;18;13;04 - 00;18;15;09
We often say 20 minutes, but whatever.

00;18;15;09 - 00;18;16;19
Just a quick conversation.

00;18;16;19 - 00;18;18;07
And then from that,

00;18;18;07 - 00;18;21;10
I mean, sometimes they don't even know
that they want to hire an intern

00;18;21;10 - 00;18;22;26
until they meet you. Sure.

00;18;22;26 - 00;18;27;04
And then they're like, ooh, And so, yeah,
these short chats can lead to referrals,

00;18;27;04 - 00;18;30;13
internships, insights that you would never
get from just looking at a job board.

00;18;30;18 - 00;18;31;01
Yeah.

00;18;31;01 - 00;18;33;27
So instead of asking who's hiring,

00;18;33;27 - 00;18;37;06
ask who's doing work I admire, right?

00;18;37;06 - 00;18;40;16
What industries?
What companies do I admire?

00;18;40;23 - 00;18;44;28
That shift from searching jobs
to searching companies and industries

00;18;44;28 - 00;18;49;17
can open up doors that fit your interests,
your values, and your future goals.
