Welcome back to our safety series. Today we're talking about money and creating safety around money and budgeting, and we're doing it in a really fun way. I promise, because I brought on the budget besties, Vanessa and Shayna, and they prioritize being bougie on a budget, taking care of your health while still taking care of your finances.

So this is gonna be a really good one. we went really deep into grocery budgeting and some misconceptions around that that I think will be really helpful for every single one of us. So make sure to stay till the end for all of their tips.

We are so excited to dive in. Welcome, Vanessa and Shana, the budget besties. They are here to help us understand how we can prioritize our health and our budgets at the same time. And I think that this is something that we can use so much help on. So I'm just gonna let them introduce themselves and dive right in.

[00:00:47] Budget: Thank you Leisha, for having us. We are so excited to be here to talk about the B word. Yeah. I'm Shana, she's Vanessa. We are the budget besties. as you said, we're here, we're excited to frame it around what you're saying. Mm-hmm. Safety and your finance. Is, and you know, our [00:01:00] goal is for you to take all of the stress and the guesswork out of all of the finances.

. , so we're here. Let's do it.

[00:01:05] Leisha l RN, Holistic Hormone Coach: We just had a conversation on their podcast that we will link to if the timing works out for both of us. But we'll link to, and I'll send you to their podcast either way, but we were talking about how the phases of your cycle really directly affect your spending and your neurotransmitters. So we're gonna touch on that just a little bit.

I would love to just start with just hearing a little bit of your experience working with women who prioritize health. What are some of the things that you see? Maybe, maybe we can talk mistakes first. Like what are some of the red flag mistakes, things that you see for women who are like, my health is a priority, but it's kind of ruining their budgeting or their finances.

What changes do you have them start to make first?

[00:01:44] Budget: Well, I think we wanna back up really quick to talk about why women don't wanna budget in the first place. because they feel like it's taboo. They feel like budget means no, it's restrictive. believe, in what they've been taught, what they see online is that it means that they have to live on rice and beans. they can't do anything [00:02:00] fun or be healthy. And we really have come, done a full circle, right? whole 180 on this. And we really want you to understand, and you said bougie on a budget. That is our tagline. Our goal for you is to be able to incorporate all of this stuff, this fun stuff, this exciting, this healthy stuff into your budget.

So that way you are building a life, you're building a budget that matches your goals, your dreams, and your vision. Yeah. Like Vanessa said, , we started, we were trained by Dave Ramsey, and so we started. Down that line, and we kind of grew up on that personally. But what we don't believe is that you should live on beans and rice unless you find some really healthy, amazing, delicious beans and rice that you love.

But they're not gonna be the cheap gun, to be honest. and we want you to have your gym membership in there. We want you to have your yoga, whatever it is you do, we want you to have those supplements, those beef organs or whatever it is that you like. We want all of that for you. Problem is, the red flags, I guess is first of all, as you know, I'm sure that you find this all the time, Leisha women will put themselves last.

They put everything else , in the budget or in their life or in their schedule besides them. So that's obviously a problem. And as you speak [00:03:00] to, , if, you know, I, I think if mom's not right, then the whole ship is going down, you guys, so we've got to prioritize it. But the other thing is they might result to credit because like Vanessa said, they don't wanna do a budget because that means no automatically budget equals no. So they resort to credit and then we're racking up kind of credit fund this life. Mm-hmm. Which we wanna be bougie on budget. So,, the goal for us would be to, it out. To figure out what we really want , to be having in our budget and have a. You know, health and supplements.

Health and wellness, we have all kinds of, that's a category that we would want you to have in your budget and start planning for it on purpose. and then of course , you're gonna put your stuff, you're gonna have your husband, you're gonna have your kids. , It's, it's gonna be a whole line item.

We see a lot of times, like Shana said, people are relying on their credit cards to be able to help fund this life that they so desire because they don't know how to do. Any other way. , But they haven't been taught any other way. And so our goal for you is to build a budget, show you that you can do all of it at the same time.

You can even pay off debt while living your best life and buying all your supplements and having your gym membership and, you know, getting hormone tests and things like [00:04:00] that, you just, you have to know how to budget it. But the problem is that no one's been taught. People are expected to know how to budget.

They're expected to know how to manage their finances. I was just talking to two women yesterday. One husband passed away, the other one was going through a divorce. There's so much shame around trying to figure out how to do their finances, but yet nobody taught them how. Mm-hmm. Because , their husbands are the ones that. Handled all of it. And so trying to unpack and watching them cry on the computer from all this, it's like, no, let's take a step back. Let's educate you. And so just like you, you're trying to educate everyone on their home loans so they know what's going on. And we're trying to do the same on the finance side.

[00:04:33] Leisha l RN, Holistic Hormone Coach: So I'll just go on a different direction. In real quick, but I'm curious, what you guys' recommendation is within a marriage for like how to handle budget and finances together. Do you prefer that it's done completely together? or how do you usually recommend doing that? Because I know that there's so many different roles in marriage.

Sometimes , the man, I think a lot more typically does it, but sometimes a woman does it. How do you get on the same page there?

[00:04:59] Budget: It's so [00:05:00] funny. Was this a dream? A lot of variables. We just talk about this. Yeah. some people think that the men, all the men , handle it. And that's like , the narrative that they have been taught. And then we have just as many women that it's always the women 'cause they're. They're quote unquote at home handling the finances or whatever.

Like it's just this weird thing. It really comes down to one of you might be more interested in doing it, you're gonna take the lead role, but you're absolutely gonna do , the general vision casting and the overall decision making together as a team. 'cause you are a team. and we love that for you.

We want you to dream again , and think about what's possible with your money. And then one of you can kind of be , the executor, you know? Yeah. The one that does the, the tactical version of it. But you do want to dream and vision cast and, and set goals together as a couple. It's so fun. I mean, like, you remember when you got married, you had all these goals and vision for your life, and you don't wanna take that away.

You wanna keep that going throughout your marriage and every month getting together, just making sure that you guys are on track. But like Shayna said, there will be the one person that is just taking over it majority, because they love it. , They have more time or whatever. And listen, we've seen it all different ways.

We will have clients that only , the wives show [00:06:00] up because the husbands can't during the sessions. It doesn't mean that. They're doing it wrong. It just means she's the one that can show up. Yeah. And, and that's okay. And we'll talk a little bit about our system. Very simple, very simple way to budget.

But , the idea is , you're gonna set a budget one time and 90% of your money will do the exact same thing every month. Over and over. You can, it's very. Very systematic. Right? Very,predictable and you can just set it up to happen. So you don't actually have to do a lot in the month to month stuff.

Yeah. You're just kind of doing it together. You don't have to get in the weeds.

[00:06:30] Leisha l RN, Holistic Hormone Coach: One of the questions I get all the time that I would love to hear your answer on is how do I stick to my budget with groceries, specifically with inflation, with trying to buy healthier organic options?

[00:06:42] Budget: It's funny, I had a lady yesterday and she put this arbitrary number in her budget, and I said, is that really happening with a family of four? And she said, no. I said, okay. So you're automatically setting yourself up for failure. Yeah. You're saying that your budget doesn't work. groceries is the reason. No, it was her $700 a month kid budget [00:07:00] that she was saying yes to. Okay? Mm-hmm. So you really have to look and we want you to make a realistic grocery budget. Yeah. See, that's the, we see that a lot is people are trying to cut down on groceries when let's just lean in. There's nothing that you can do about raising prices, right.

That is out of your control. So we need to make sure we're planning accordingly for it. Yeah. I think that women,, I know personally. We think, well, this is the one area I can quote unquote control. Mm-hmm. it's the one area I can try to do, , the most, you know, shopping around or , budgeting or whatever when it comes to that , and we are trying too hard and it's way too heavy of a burden. It already was because food is expensive, but now it's so much more expensive and now you're getting healthy and it's just mm-hmm. You need to be realistic with that number. That's the number one thing that they're doing wrong. They are saying, oh, we can do a thousand dollars. No, you can't. No, you can't.

, Let's just be really honest. so what we want you to do is, there's two options. I do the second one 'cause I don't, I'm really lazy when it comes to this kinda stuff, but there's two options. The first one is go back through your credit card statements or your bank statements, whatever you use.

[00:08:00] And for maybe three months and just highlight when you went to the grocery store, what you spent, and just come up with a monthly average of , what you are spending. That's your new budget, right? So, you know, for me, let's say 1500 bucks for a family of five. It is my grocery budget. that's what I would put in the monthly budget.

And then I know every week I'm getting 1500 divided by four. What is that Vanessa? Go? Ooh. Anybody? Nobody. It's divided by four. It's less than four. Yeah. It's good. Mm-hmm. It's great. We'll just, we're gonna go back to 1200 'cause I can do that math. Okay. Thank you everybody for, for participating in that fun time.

So 300 bucks a week. , That's something that I can mentally figure out, like, oh yeah. If I go on Sunday. Do my grocery pickup. I usually spend about 200 and then I have a couple different things coming in at a hundred dollars. Mm-hmm. Or whatever. That's where we wanna go. We wanna have a monthly budget and then know that we can get that money weekly and live in that.

You have to adjust based on whether that works for you or not. Now the other way that I do, so I said, you can go audit or you can just pick a number. Pick a number that is realistic, you can go listen to Leisha's version on ours. She probably said it on here too. Don't do it during [00:09:00] necessarily , your period week.

Like let's go to the day 20 version of you. And then see a rational number , and just pick that and then try to stick to that. The deal is, don't, especially all of you ladies, you're listening to this, you're trying to be healthy. This is not the place that you necessarily need to scrimp, scrimp, scrimp. This is the place you need to be realistic. you do do better than that, then you can allocate that money somewhere else. Yeah. And you know, I think what we've seen is that women are putting these numbers in their budget trying to make it work, and they're not, so they're spending elsewhere. They're putting it on credit cards and they're, they're trying to figure out how to make it work.

And when we're talking about doing that three month. we call it a 90 day audit to go back and just look at your groceries. There's no shame in that. So the idea of this is not to shame you and be like, oh, you spent this much, and that's not it. , It's data. We're just looking at the data, so leave all the drama out of it.

We're just saying realistically, you spend 15, $1,600, $2,000 a month on groceries. Own it. Yeah. And just know that that's what I have to put in my budget and then I have to work around that. And then one quick tool, [00:10:00] that we would say is have a separate account for groceries. , When we're talking about feeling safe, I think as a mom, , I talk about all the time like.

We used to get paid once a month , but at the end of the month I'm like, I have no money left for groceries. These people still want to eat like every single day. They're rude. It's really kind of rude. and so what we want you to do is have a separate account that , your monthly budget is going into that account and it's protected.

Mm-hmm. Your bills are paid, you know, those are good over there. If I have spending money at somewhere else, but I know that this money I have for groceries and that will help you a lot. It'll help you budget correctly. It'll help regulate your nervous system 'cause you can feed your family. and so we would say have a separate checking account specifically for groceries.

And I wanna lean into that. This may be the first time that your listeners have ever heard of that we, we harp on. This grocery account. Imagine knowing that you always have money for groceries all the time, whether you replenish it once a week, you replenish it once a month, twice a month, however, that however you want to put money in there for you and your family, but knowing that your bills are being taken care of and your main checking account, and then you have money. For groceries, always to be [00:11:00] able to spend whenever you want. Yeah. And you're not in the checkout line. Like, okay, did the mortgage get paid? Can I also get this chicken and did the daycare bill, whatever? Like you're not trying to do any of these mental decisions 'cause you have one account that's for groceries and your other account is paying the bills and you don't have to worry about it.

[00:11:13] Leisha l RN, Holistic Hormone Coach: Yeah, we actually used to do the cash method for groceries, but then like grocery pickup, I was doing that like no Walmart delivery, those kind of things. It's so easy to go off track and so yeah, we have a separate checking account for groceries and use the debit card for that and it really makes such a big difference versus it feels like it could be the same if you're like, I budgeted this much for groceries.

I'm using my credit card for it and I'm going to pay it back each time. But then when I don't pay it back each time, it's so easy for it to be like, oh, do we actually have money?

[00:11:45] Budget: at what

to yourself. 

[00:11:47] Leisha l RN, Holistic Hormone Coach: Yeah. It made it so much harder.

[00:11:48] Budget: And what we've done with this extra checking account is it's the modern day version of the cash envelope system, right? So, you know, Dave Ramsey always talked about how Grandma saved money under her mattress , and then you [00:12:00] have all these envelopes, one's for utilities, one's for this, one's for that.

Well, now we're just opening up. A separate checking account. So you have the cash always there for you to be able to do this online,grocery shopping. So nobody has to walk into the store and nobody has to get tempted. Yeah. And I think it doesn't get outta control. . You'll find if the money is separate and you're able to order. At home on a computer like Vanessa said,, you're gonna probably make actually better decisions. , but to your point, the, the problem is the credit cards, the credit cards will allow you to go over. It doesn't require you to have any sort of guardrails. And that's what this budget is, by the way.

It's just a guardrail. It's not a no, it's not a, you have to, nobody's making you do this. It's just saying, Hey, , if I set. 1500 bucks aside, or $2,000 aside for my grocery budget every month, all my other goals can be made. So I just have to live over here. And it also makes a micro decision. So if I'm going to either make a order or go to the grocery store and I have $300 in there,, I know that I have $300 and I don't have to also think.

I have this other bill and I have this other thing, and I also need to get the kids' shoes for the week and like, like it's just my grocery budget. Mm-hmm. That's the only decision I have to think about in the [00:13:00] moment, and I just have to keep that, that particular order under 300 bucks. I have to share this super little story really quick from my husband on Wednesday.

So last week we get our grocery account replenished on Thursday mornings and so Wednesday night, and I know him and he said I have to run to the store really quick to grab one thing. And I was like, you fool, you are not gonna grab one thing. So I said, hold on. I looked up the grocery account and I said, babe, there's $91 in the grocery account. Have fun. Like, that's what you got. And girl, he came back and there was 68 cents in there. I. He did great. Yes. Right. And it, that thing got replenished at midnight on Thursday. So just again, like Shana has talked about, having those guardrails around what your goals are, you said you wanna stay within this budget, this extra separate account is helping you reach those goals by setting a guardrail, saying like, Hey, this is the amount of money that you're gonna spend and it's okay to stay within that.

[00:13:49] Leisha l RN, Holistic Hormone Coach: and I really love , the realism around it because we've been married for 13 years now. Okay. When. I was, however old, 22, got married, and it was [00:14:00] just my husband and I, we spent $200 a month on groceries. Okay. And we were, we were eating crap. So there was that, you know, pasta and frozen pizzas and, , I just can't, I just remember, 

[00:14:11] Budget: It's okay. It's okay. Yeah. We

pizzas when I was pregnant. Okay. We won't go there.

[00:14:15] Leisha l RN, Holistic Hormone Coach: Oh yeah. No, for sure. So with that being said, I think it's so hard for our brains, over this span of like 12, 13 years for it to be such a different number. So I think where you're normalizing like $1,500, 2000, ours is right around $1,500 a month and that it seems like it's pretty hard to go under that to feed my family.

Well, and we also have a family of five and my kids love to eat and that's a great thing.

[00:14:38] Budget: tell my kids, you, you and I apparently are from Texas. I tell my kids when we got married, which was 22 years ago or something, 21. Mm-hmm. pound of beef. In Texas, to be fair, it was a dollar. Okay. A whole dollar, and now it's $6. So if you want to think about the difference in prices mm-hmm.

And, and that's just for regular beef, like let's talk about Wagyu or whatever. Any other fancy one's gonna be more [00:15:00] that's, you know, six. A hundred percent increase in prices. And so, yeah, I think you're right. You're tending to look at your beginner life phase budget and it has nothing to do with the current stage of life.

And it's not you failing at budgeting. It's not you failing , at getting good coupon deals. It's because food is expensive. Y'all. And I will say too, as your kids grow, you need to adjust to that. Listen, my husband, he was so sweet, he went to the store and bought, buy one, get one for your organic chicken.

And he was so excited that he bought like. Four packs or something. Right. My son, who's six 17 now, and plays basketball, he's all whatever. He's so athletic and, he ate like probably all of four chicken breasts that night for dinner. And my husband was like, I really thought I was gonna have enough to make lunch the next day.

And I said, there are no leftovers unless you're cooking for an army. We have no leftovers. It's just so much more expensive.

[00:15:53] Leisha l RN, Holistic Hormone Coach: Definitely. And I know it depends on the size of your family and your kids and things like that, so I think just . Going back and actually looking at what you've really [00:16:00] spent, and then a couple of ways that have helped us save money on groceries is , I shop every 10 days instead of every week.

That seems to work well for us because I'm going to the store one less time and we really don't have the standard of like, I'm just gonna run to the store for one thing. Also, it helps a lot that we live away from stores. We don't really live right by the store. We have the Dollar General.

That's five minutes away and everything else is at least 10 or 15. And so that really helps because there's not that much good at the Dollar General, I'll be honest. But when I make my meal plan and I do 10 days, I've noticed that that does help keep me out of the store a little bit more. Because especially if you take your kids to the store, just taking your kids to the store costs how much money , even if you say no to everything, at least the snack just to get them through the store is going to upcharge.

So, I love the grocery pickup for that. Yeah.

[00:16:46] Budget: Yeah. Yeah. Which the grocery pickup, , the thing that , you're saying is it's actually the planning. It requires planning, which is what's gonna save you money. I totally agree. The more often you go to the store, the more you're gonna spend money. Whether it's target, whether it's the grocery store, whatever. so that is a hack, [00:17:00] life hack. Don't go to the store. You spend less money. But, the other thing is, like you said, it requires planning, and , this is my new hack, is we have a shared, note. We all have Apple stuff. We have a shared note that's the weekly family menu.

and if they want something, they put it on the grocery list and I will order it on Sunday. And then this is the menu. And also They can't ask me what's for dinner anymore. 'cause it's already right there. I'm really excited. That's the whole like, big thing. But a little bit of planning will help you.

You don't have to go to the store so often. Everybody knows what they can eat. That's a bonus, feature too. so yeah, I think that that's a big one. But I did wanna speak to safety, because when you said that it really, brought me back to why , we started this, why I started , what emotions got me into wanting to do better with my finances, which was. Feeling like I never had money, feeling like my kids always needed something and I didn't know if we could afford it. And the groceries, right? Like getting , to the end of the month and not having any money. We have a very simple five column budget. We would love for people to come check it out.

very simple, very pretty, very aesthetically pleasing. because we don't want budgeting to be boring or, or scary. But the point being being, [00:18:00] we want you to have categories for groceries. We want you to have a category for your personal spending, which we can talk about with the cycles and stuff if you have a certain amount of, spending money each month. Then it's going to just be better. You deserve it, you need it. it's not about all about everyone else. But then the other one is the kids. Because , we find that, a lot of times for women, they spend all their money on their kids and then they never have any money for themselves, which is.

What leads to binge spending or credit card debt or whatever. So we like to have a line item for the kids specifically. And depending on the kids' ages, it'll all vary. It might be something you manage when they're younger, when they get older. Mm-hmm. They can start to manage it and they can make better decisions.

But having all of those separate and knowing that you have all of them Yeah. Is a game changer. It's gonna make you feel better. It's gonna regulate your nervous system better because everything is covered. And we are not about tracking every single expense and transaction throughout the month.

We think that that is a waste of time. We think that that is bogging you down. We think that it's unnecessary. there are a lot of budgets out there that we tried and people that we try to partner with [00:19:00] try to use a budget. Do you think making our own budget was in the plans or our business? Absolutely not. And but when we decided, no, none of these are working. They do not speak to what we want, , what we want for , our listeners. And so we created our own. like Shana said, it's by category. It's not by transaction. And it allows you the freedom to be able to put , words and numbers on paper.

You call have it a budget, right? You call it a budget. You have your separate categories that you're gonna spend in. And the last part of that is making it all automatic, right? So once you set up a budget, once you separate it and you organize it. The categories, then you can set up these automatic transfers into your different accounts, your different categories.

That allows you to not have to be in it every single month. Right. You're basically just kind of checking in on it, so that way when you're, when you're hormonal and when different times of the month are happening to you, you can sit back and relax and just spend money freely because everything has happened for you and you don't have to make in the moment decisions.

Yeah. So your grocery account, like you have Leisha. We want you to have account for your [00:20:00] personal spending and for your husband's personal spending. And like I said, we can talk about the difference in the kids, but at least one account for the kids. where all of these used to be cash envelopes, but now they're going to be digital envelopes.

But like Vanessa said, you can set up automatic transfers to having happening. And I love her point when your being your good girl budget itself and you're like, I don't need anything. We're gonna live on nothing. It's gonna be fine. You don't have to spend no money. But when the that fund you. Version of you comes along.

Mm-hmm. There's money in your account, you can spend it. And what it does again, is it acts as a little guardrail. It's like, girl, you spend this money spend, but just stick with this amount and you know clearly how much you have to spend, you know, , that you have money to spend and how much.

Mm-hmm. Those two things alone will help you not overspend all on their own. We've seen it over and over. Yeah. with our clients, like they just naturally do a better job, but they know how much they have to spend. They have the freedom to spend permission to spend, in those moments when they want to.

And that's a game changer. Yeah, and it's not that people have an overspending problem, it's that they have a disorganization problem. Their money is disorganized. They have, it's one account. A massive black hole of [00:21:00] transactions. They have no idea what's coming out, what's coming in, when and where, and how much.

All of that. by separating it and having it organized, you can clearly see, like, all I have to do is pull up my phone. I see , my grocery account, I see my account, I see my kids' accounts. , It's just so organized. And again, we're bringing that cash envelope system to the digital world because nobody takes cash anymore, really. so it's helping you. Organize your money and just hold yourself accountable. Like Shana said, it's these small little guardrails that you're putting in place to, to, help you be successful. And also knowing that your bills are in an account being taken care of, that you never have to worry about.

[00:21:32] Leisha l RN, Holistic Hormone Coach: I have an idea of my answer for this, but I also know, I know we have a lot of, people who either, like the women have their own businesses, their husband have their own businesses, and there's some variation in monthly income. If that feels like the sticking point for being able to have this automated budget that feels like a, it sounds just like a breath of fresh air where you're like, okay, it's taken care of.

I don't have to be thinking about it. , What changes do you make there, or what would you say? , How is this still possible? [00:22:00] So that can't be an excuse.

[00:22:02] Budget: I love how she said that, that, so that can't be an excuse. It's not an excuse. , So, , we deal with all kinds of budgets. Mm-hmm. All kinds. Big, small variable. We have a lot of entrepreneurs. Yeah. And so what we want you to do is make your baseline budget. And what that looks like is, usually using your minimum expected income.

that's what we do. So it's not just entrepreneurs that have variable income. Sometimes people, work overtime or they get bonuses or whatever, but we are gonna make your budget based on the minimum, which means you are not paying extra on debt, in this budget you're using. You , may not be able to save a lot of money.

Right. But we're gonna say, what's the minimum baseline budget, which you have to stick to anyway. Yeah. Like you have to have that. Regardless of how your income is, because you have to pay your bills and you have to have groceries, right? So what we want you to do is put , the minimum like average that you expect.

You're gonna put that in there. That's in the income column. You're gonna put your debt minimums in the next column, your bills in the next column. You're gonna plan your spending in the next column. Usually , if you're budgeting on your minimums, you're not gonna have a whole lot leftover at that point, which is fine.

Then we're gonna [00:23:00] put extra. In there when it comes in, and we can move that toward savings. We can put that toward, debt or whatever other goals you have, but the minimum is what you're gonna make that automatic budget based on. And if you do have entrepreneurs in there, well, you know, as listeners then what we would say is your business needs a budget as well, and you need to make your personal budget to figure out how much money you need to bring in just for you to pay yourself. So that way you can put that as a line item in . Your business budget. and if your husband has a business as well, then need, he needs to put , his income that he needs in there as well. So that way it becomes a business expense, right? It is a business expense. So that way, you know exactly once you make your business budget with your amount, your paycheck in there, then you can say, okay, I know this month I need my business to at least make 10,000, 20,000 whatever a month to be able to fund not only my business, but to pay myself consistently.

So it gives you, you know, that goal.
