The Modern Leadership Coaching Podcast
Stop Letting Comparison Lead You
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Ever catch yourself feeling proud of your progress, only to open your phone and feel instantly behind? We dig into the comparison trap that quietly kills presence and creative energy, then trade it for a saner, stronger way to measure growth. You’ll hear the moment-to-moment reframes we use with clients, the personal practices that keep us in our lane, and a simple rule that changes everything: you can’t create and compare at the same time.
We start by naming what comparison really is—storytelling without all the facts. Social media shows highlight reels, not the hidden reps that make results possible. From there, we pivot to the only healthy yardstick: comparing who you were to who you’re becoming. That shift puts attention back on controllables like effort, learning, and values. We also get tactical. When comparison spikes, list your mountains: wins earned, skills built, obstacles crossed. Evidence calms the nervous system and reminds you that your path has weight and momentum.
Then we zoom out to the culture around coaching and creative work. When we stop competing with imagined versions of each other and start collaborating, everything speeds up. You gain context you can’t see from outside—pricing experiments, messaging pivots, client lessons—and you realize you’re not behind, you’re just in your season. We close by previewing what’s next: the surprising signals that mean you’re near a breakthrough. As comparison fades, new discomforts show up—impostor twinges, higher standards, strategy fatigue. Those aren’t warnings to quit; they’re proof you’re growing. Subscribe, share this with a friend who needs a nudge back into their lane, and leave a quick review to tell us which reframe lands for you.

Naming The Comparison Trap
SPEAKER_01Comparison is sneaky. You can be proud of your progress one day and then scroll social media and feel behind the next. Here's the truth you need to hear. Every coach and every human is gonna feel this way. The question is, how do you stop letting it run the show?
Highlight Reels Versus Real Work
SPEAKER_00Just think about someone who you've compared yourself to lately. What story did you start telling yourself about what they had that you didn't? They say that comparison is the killer of joy. It steals your presence. You can't create and compare at the same time. And honestly, we only see someone's highlight reel, not their actual behind the scenes and the hidden reps that they put in. The only healthy comparison is between who you were and who you are becoming.
SPEAKER_01That's why today's quote is you can't coach powerfully while wishing you were someone else. So let's get into that. What is it that you personally have done to overcome comparison?
Personal Tools To Stop Comparing
SPEAKER_00For me, it's been really understanding that everybody's running their own race. Everyone was brought up differently, everyone's going through different struggles. I cannot compare myself to someone else. I'm creating my own story, my own unique story. And that's what's truly helped me stop comparing myself to others. So, what would you tell someone who's struggling with comparison, like in the moment? Like what would you tell them?
From Comparison To Collaboration
Teaser: Unexpected Signs Of Growth
SPEAKER_01Yeah, a lot of times when we're going through this comparison thing, uh we're thinking about how everybody else is better than us in a specific way. And one of the things that I do and recommend to my clients is in that moment to remind yourself of the things that you've been able to overcome, the mountains that you've been able to climb, and the special abilities that you have that nobody else ever has. And when you're focused on that, it helps you lean in and realize just how many great things that you actually have overcome, how many things you've learned, how many processes that you've been through, and it makes it less about comparing it to other people and realizing that you have that special story inside of you. Now we talk about this a lot, not only on this channel and our podcasts, but also in our groups and our certification, because it's a big deal. And when coaches stop comparing and start collaborating, everything changes. However, what we've also seen is once comparison stops, something else comes up to take its place. And if you don't know this is coming, you actually might not be thinking that you're growing at all. That's what we're talking about next. The signs of growth that means you're so close to breaking through that you might actually think is a sign that you're on the wrong path. It's not. We'll dive into that on the next episode.
