Reverse, Reset, Restore
This is for all of us who have been wounded by our own (and others) judgements and expectations, who have listened to those inner voices and believed the lies we've sold ourselves and for those who truly want to love and honour who you were always meant to be. If you've struggled with self-acceptance, poor body image and a belief system that is no longer serving you (if it ever did!), then this podcast is your reminder that you're not alone and you can choose to make changes - from your health and wellbeing, to your thoughts and the way you move in the world.
Reverse, Reset, Restore
Why your one-track mind always seems to run away from you
Hello!
This is Episode 14 and we are looking at Cognitive Distortions; negative self-talk thought patterns where your view of reality is skewed, in a negative way. These particular thinking patterns are known as 'automatic thoughts,' meaning that they are the thoughts that appear as the first or dominant thoughts, without you even being aware of them. These thoughts are predominantly activated when you experience any negative emotion, situation or idea, or anytime you perceive a negative experience may or may not be happening.
These automatic, or spontaneous, thought patterns are familiar because they can be found in any one of us at any point in our day. It's normal to have these thoughts pop in. What makes them distortions, rather than jus t a random thought, is when they become the default thinking patterns we have. Based on the type of content of the thought, they are divided into three different categories: negative ideas about oneself, negative views on the world around us and negative thoughts about what our future may, or may not, look like. These three categories are called the cognitive triad.
In this episode we'll get into the history behind the discovery of automatic thoughts and how it has reshaped the way therapists and counsellors, help their patients. I'll also introduce ten of the most common types of cognitive distortions which are:
Personalisation
Catastrophising
Filtering/Magnifying
Polarising (All or Nothing)
Over-Generalisation
Emotional Reasoning
Should Statements
Labeling and Mislabeling
Disqualifying the Positive
Jumping to Conclusions/ Mind-Reading
We'll be going into greater detail on these cognitive distortions and how you can minimise or, even eliminate, them from your thinking, in next weeks episode. So be sure to hit the subscribe button so you get the practical part two of Cognitive Distortions.
This weeks quote is words of wisdom from Swami Vivekananda, an Indian Monk, philosopher and spiritual leader.
“We are what our thoughts have made us; so take care about what you think. Words are secondary. Thoughts live; they travel far.”
As always, thank you for your support and for taking the time to listen. If you have a request for a show topic or want to share your experiences, please reach out to me via the FaceBook or Instagram page- both named Reverse Reset Restore.
