In this episode, Brad traces your greatest limitation back to the recording years, the window before age ten when your mind absorbed every rule about money and success without a filter, and shows you how a single moment became a belief that's been voting on every decision you've made since. Then he walks you through a four-step tracing exercise so you can find the rule that's capping you, say it out loud, and start to loosen it this week.

What got you here has a ceiling. And it's hiding inside your personality.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Before roughly age seven to ten, your mind took everything literally and recorded it without a filter. You absorbed your rules about money, success, and worth the same way you absorbed the English language, which is why you can't remember learning any of them and why they run everything.
  • A moment becomes a rule through two ingredients: high emotion and a child's interpretation. The stronger the emotion, the deeper the rule goes. And the rule comes from the meaning the child gave the moment, which is why two kids raised by the same father can draw completely opposite conclusions about their lives.
  • The rule that built your success has a range. "I have to prove I'm enough" is blast-off fuel. It gets you up before the kids wake and makes you outwork everyone in the room. But proving is running away from something, and away-from energy runs out right when you start making real progress. What got you out of the atmosphere is lighter fluid. What gets you around the moon is charcoal.
  • Installed rules feel like reality, so they hide inside your personality. "I'm just conservative with money." "I'm just not a big goal person." That's a rule wearing your name, and your personality has great branding for the approval of people whose approval you no longer want.
  • Blame is a waste of time. The people who installed your rules were running their own installed rules. It's inherited software, passed down generation to generation until someone decides to be the exception. It isn't your fault the rule got installed. Being the exception means taking full responsibility for what you do about it anyway.
  • Knowledge is potential power. Knowing is a lived experience. To close the gap: pick the pattern that keeps repeating at your level, name the actual emotion underneath it, follow that feeling back to the first time you remember it, and write down what you decided in that moment. Say the sentence out loud three times with a big diaphragmatic breath between each, notice your brain start to reject it, then ask "what is the truth?" and breathe through that three times too.
