Supernatural Season 5, Episode 1, Sympathy for the Devil recap 👹 Lucifer is FREE, the Apocalypse has officially begun, and the Winchesters need a plan (and a miracle) on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. Plus, we're celebrating ONE YEAR of the podcast. Cheers to you, hunters!

Picking up right where the season four finale left off, the boys are blinded by the light of Lucifer's rising, and then suddenly they're on an airplane. (Who zapped them there? And who cleaned them up?) Castiel has been blown to bits, Chuck (Rob Benedict) is on the verge of a nervous breakdown, and Zachariah (Kurt Fuller) wants to be friends again. Meanwhile, the Winchesters are barely speaking after Sam's role in setting Lucifer loose, and Dean is having a hard time forgiving and forgetting.

Episode Highlights:

  • New listener reviews from Katie and KayDax2 (thank you!)
  • Sam pulling a bloody molar out of his hair, and Chuck nearly losing it
  • The debut of Becky Rosen (Emily Perkins), Wincest fan fiction writer and Chuck's biggest fan, whose moment of the episode is a castle on a hill made of 42 dogs
  • Sam's puppy dog eyes (old Sammy is back!)
  • Bobby not acting like Bobby, AT ALL
  • The storage unit with John's old-school, ornate devil's trap
  • Dean's perfect deadpan: "Oh, thank God, the angels are here"
  • Nick (Mark Pellegrino), whose every scene made us physically uncomfortable
  • Castiel's return, and he's all business

In the lore segment, we dig into Lucifer's fall from grace: the morning star who walked in the Garden of Eden, how pride led to his rebellion against God, and why he's the ultimate show-stopper (of course he's dramatic). Ezekiel 28, Isaiah 14:12, and Revelation 12 gives us all the tea.

"I got no idea. But what I do have is a GED and a give-'em-hell attitude, and I'll figure it out." – Dean Winchester

Your turn, hunters: Can Dean forgive Sam? And who's your favorite new face this season? Tell us in the Spotify comments, leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts (it's how new hunters find us, and we might read yours on air!), or send us fan mail. Bonus points for fandom fun facts we missed.
