Hi, I’m Caroline Thao—Jesus follower, wife, and mom who knows what it’s like to feel overwhelmed by expectations that stem from a perfectionist mindset. It led me to try to control everything—and when I failed, I felt the heavy weight of mom guilt. For years, I second-guessed everything: my parenting, my faith, my dreams. I felt torn between being fully present with my kids and pursuing the passions God placed on my heart. Worst of all, I believed the lie that I had to choose one or the other—until I learned to forgive myself so I could finally show up as the mom I wanted to be.
And here’s the good news: you don’t have to live stuck in guilt or strive to be a “perfect” mom.
Through scripture, intentional habits, and faith-filled mindset shifts, I discovered how to let go of guilt and live like the mom God created me to be—not the one guilt kept me stuck as. And now, I want to help you do the same.
Each episode will give you biblical encouragement, practical tools, and simple habits to:
- Break free from mom guilt and the perfectionist mindset that leaves you feeling stuck.
- Walk in confidence in all the roles God has entrusted you without needing to do it all.
- Lead your children with grace, love, and patience—not pressure.
- Finally becoming the mom you’ve always envisioned yourself to be.
So if you’re ready to stop running on empty and start thriving in your motherhood journey, you’re in the right place. Grab your Bible, invite the Holy Spirit in, and let’s walk this journey together—one peaceful step at a time.

So thank you for sharing the podcast. I greatly appreciate it, my friend. Let's dive right in. All right, so what are we talking about today? Um, We are going to be discerning through whether we are burnt out or just simply feeling unmotivated. And the reason why I wanted to talk about this today is because I went through this this past summer, I was in a ruck, so to speak, where I couldn't really tell the difference if I was just burnt out or feeling unmotivated. And to be quite honest with you, I think it was a little bit of both. Um, So, in the beginning of the summer, I was struggling. And the biggest difference for me and my discernment of what burnt out and feeling unmotivated is, is that when you feel burnout, you find yourself growing weak and exhausted. You might even find that the things that you do on a daily. are slowly decreasing in certain areas of your life. So for me, I used to have a routine of where I did certain things on certain days, and I realized that I didn't want to show up for these things because I was just so exhausted. I didn't want to do anything. I was looking for some time to rest. Feeling unmotivated... Um, I think about feelings, right? there are emotions and thoughts of thinking that you're not making progress. So what's the point? we're not feeling like putting in the work to complete a task. And it happens to the best of us. being unmotivated is not an uncommon thing and neither is burnout. I think that we all experience this in some fashion, on some level in our walk of life, just in general. in my discernment of why burnout happens, the number one thing that came to mind was the fact that I was trying to do everything all at one time. And I don't know, my friend, if that might be you too, but think about your schedule. See, for me, I was trying to do too much all at once, trying to fill the space in my day to day calendar with something to do. And that's not always a good thing because the question therein lies, when do you have time to rest? See this can happen to anyone, even the most seasoned person that's been on their journey for quite some time. Like me for example. Now I know, being completely honest with you, that I got comfortable my routine and I got complacent. So I thought maybe to shake things up, I needed to add more things to my schedule and I didn't realize it. until it was already too late that I had added too much to my calendar all at once. another reason why maybe a lot of us feel burnout is because there is stress in our life and we are also lacking sleep, which they go hand in hand. If you think about it, if you're really stressed, you're probably not sleeping well. And if you're not sleeping well, you're probably really stressed, right? Some of the things that can be the reason why we stay up later is because we're distracted by being on our phone or maybe we're watching too much TV. We could be staying up later. Maybe your kids were also on summer break, so you guys were out of your normal sleeping routine. There's also a lot of vacations that happen around that time, and so you're traveling, so you're not on a regular sleeping schedule. Or maybe you typically don't have a nightly routine, which can also hinder the amount of sleep that you have, and the stress level that's in your life. Sometimes we can be intentional by laying in bed, but then we become distracted by being on our phone, or if we have a TV in our room, we're just flipping through channels and watching things. I'm so guilty of this, and I know that a lot of us here are too. But the thing is, we have to be able to find balance to not become too distracted on our phones or sit on the couch too long and watch TV. When I was in college, I used to watch a lot of Korean dramas, and I would tell myself that I'd go to sleep after this episode, but then after the episode ended, I watched one more and then one more turned into two, and before I knew it, it was three or four in the morning, and as I'm getting up four hours later, I'm feeling so exhausted the next morning, and I'm dragging my feet to get to class. Or, to go to work. there was so much unnecessary stress that I placed on myself back then. I don't know how I did it, but I did, and I know if you know, you know what that's like. The more I reflect on my lack of sleep this summer, from just knowing that we were going on vacation and staying up later, and There's just some life things that happen. Because, yes, there are times where we do have to stay up for certain things in our life like if we're studying for a big test and maybe we're a little bit anxious that we might not pass it so we want to review our notes or if you're a parent like myself and your child gets sick, there's a chance that you're going to be up all night making sure that your child is okay, especially if they're vomiting or they're just not feeling well. my husband and I experienced that this past summer. Our youngest got really sick and she was up all night vomiting and she was so exhausted But we were also exhausted in the following morning. It definitely showed because we didn't do anything. We didn't really get up. We were kind of like dragging our feet just moving around the house. whether it's a choice that we make or something that we can't control, it still affects our stress level. And I get it. Like I said, there are times where you can't control these things. Maybe your work schedule, puts you in a different sleep schedule than most people would. reprioritize? But in talking about burnout, I started thinking about, well, what does the Bible say about this? And my attention was turned towards Isaiah 40 verse 28 to 30. It reads, have you heard? Have you never understood the Lord is the everlasting God, the creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding. He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. Even youths become weak and tired and young men will fall in exhaustion. But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint. Now, what I gather from this is that God sustains us, even in burnout. Even the youths will become weak and tired. For me, that means everyone will become tired at some point. And to be really honest with you, I feel like that was me. I was on the go, enjoying the things that I was enjoying, showing up with excitement to work out or to be where I had placed myself. And then at some point I became really tired. the encouragement here, my friend, is if we rest in the Lord, we can have full confidence that he will sustain us in times of burnout. in Matthew 11, Jesus invites us to take his yoke. He says he is gentle and lowley in heart. He tells us we will find rest for our souls if we accept his invitation to rest in him. what I see here, from what the Bible says, is that we go to God because He sustains us. We take the yoke that Jesus invites us to take to find rest for our souls. And in that time, we discern what our priority is. We pray and ask the Holy Spirit, to guide and lead us to where we need to be. And through that, my friend, I was able to say no to a lot of things that I originally said yes to, and there was no guilt feeling. There was no feeling of being disappointed that I didn't fulfill these things that I said I would. I completed them, yes, but I didn't recommit because There were certain things that ended up taking priority over my life. And that's okay because we're not meant to be in every single place all at once. and maybe this wasn't the season for me to be where I thought I needed to be. It's us aligning ourselves with God so that we can feel rest and work from rest. I'm going to shift gears here and I'm going to talk about the lack of motivation that we can experience from time to time. I said earlier that it's emotion based for me anyway, and that usually stems from when we are disappointed when we're not reaching our goals. Over the summer I strived for certain measurements and certain body goals. And I realized a couple months in that I wasn't where I wanted to be. I'm very transparent when I share with you my journey and how there are a lot of ups and downs. And this is one of those things that... I ended up getting distracted over was the results. It was not the intention behind it. And so because of that, the body goals, so to speak, that I had envisioned for myself to lick a certain way by a certain time didn't happen. I felt like I didn't make any progress. I felt like if anything, I got bigger, if anything, nothing happened. And so that created a lot of lack of motivation. I didn't want to do these things. I didn't want to continue to show up if nothing was happening. And that's where my temptation to quit this journey that I was on started happening. But I also have to say that that was the enemy's way of telling me like, Hey, you're getting too close. You're getting too close. to God. I need to pull you away. So where in your life have you been growing and showing up anyway, but you feel like quitting because the enemy is trying to tell you that you're getting too close to God. Our emotions are wavering. Sometimes we feel great, other times we feel really down, and it happens in waves. But guess what's constant? Guess who is constant? God. He's constant. We can forget about other progress that we can't really see physically, like how we're feeling internally when we're working out or when we're going for a walk because we're focusing on the emotions that we have, the disappointments that we have. At least that was my experience, but I know that many of you here that's listening have experienced something similar as well. Another reason why we can lack of motivations is when we start living in the all or nothing mindset, which is the world's way of saying that if we don't go full force all at once, then we're not quote unquote in it to win it or it's go big or go home. And we often fall prey to that and we think that if we don't go big, then we're completely lost. I believe that those phrases can be easily misunderstood because it pressures us to go into an all or nothing mindset. I have to give it my all or I'm not doing it at all. And I don't believe that that's what God tries to tell us. Because what does the Bible say about that chapter 3 verse 23 and 24 it says whatever you do work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord not for human masters since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward It is the Lord Christ you are serving. My hope in sharing this verse with you is that you hear encouragement to work with all your heart, meaning continuing to show up when you're feeling unmotivated, wondering what all of this is for. It's trusting the process, trusting God to take you through the process. It's realizing that you don't have to go big or go home. You can take baby steps and add things as you continue to grow in your journey. This is not an all or nothing journey. So it's time that we get out of that mindset, right? And by the way, as I was discerning through this, I realized that we can be our own human masters. When you lose sight of who you are serving, you become your own human master. Why? Because you put yourself first, so you're worried about not looking a certain way, you're frustrated because goals haven't been met, or the vision that you have for yourself hasn't been brought to life. The things of this world does not matter to God. What matters is you. Your heart. The question is... Who are you serving? I often think back to the question God asked Adam in Genesis. He says, where are you? And I don't think he meant physically, where are you, Adam? I think he meant, where is your heart? So my friend, as you discern through whether or not you're in a burnt out season, or feeling unmotivated, or maybe a little bit of both, I would encourage you to rest in the Lord and think about what you can remove off your to do list to reprioritize and figure out what your non negotiables are this season. What are the things that you are not giving up? And leave those there. And everything else falls where you have time, but don't forget to make time to rest. To withdraw and to pray. Jesus often withdrew to pray. And I think that sets a great example for us on how we are to carry our lives as well. If you say yes to everything, my friend, I believe that you're going to say no to the important things like resting. I also want to remind you to work with the light, meaning gain pleasure in serving the Lord with good works that you're doing. Whatever it is that you're doing, whether it be working out, being a stay at home mom in your career, whatever it is, do it with the light and serving the Lord. Now, you don't have to go and quote scripture to everyone, but you can be kind. You can be a serving person. You don't have to do everything all at once if you're starting something new. That's just a reminder for you because I know that we can get into the all or nothing mindset. Start small, my friend, and build from there. You don't have to have a big mansion on the first day, right? We can have a cute little cottage, if you will, but celebrate your progress. Don't get so fixated on what didn't happen and remember about the things that changed internally. If you're on a fitness journey, if you're doing something that you take delight in, remember to celebrate those progress by simply being thankful for showing up when you didn't feel like it. Because those Times, those moments where you showed up when you didn't feel like it, they're going to make a difference in the long run. Remember, this is a journey, not a sprint. so my friend, I know that this can be hard but as I always say, you can do hard things. Hey, thank you for listening. If this episode has spoken life into you or your mindset transformation journey, please share it with a friend. The growth of this podcast is possible through you.
