The cost of avoiding a difficult conversation isn't the conversation itself. It's what happens after, while you're still telling yourself you're protecting somebody. In this solo episode, Jeff Luther walks through a mistake he made with his son Cash and what it cost both of them.
Months after Jeff's sudden cardiac death, Cash watched his dad get shocked back to life. For months after, Jeff would ask "you okay?" and get "yep." Every time. Same question, same safe answer, conversation over. Jeff explains why that felt like protecting his son, when it was actually protecting himself from an answer he wasn't ready to hear.
Then came a wrestling meet, a violent injury, and Cash falling apart in the stands. That's when Jeff finally got the real story: sirens had been triggering him for months, and he'd had nowhere to put it. Jeff breaks down what it actually took to create a safe place for that conversation, and the question he now asks himself before accepting anyone's easy answer: am I relieved by what they just told me, or do I actually believe it?
