In this special Holiday Bonus Episode, recorded last holiday season, we're joined by Provisional Psychologist Nevena Kalajdzic. As we approach December and the year-end at an unexpectedly swift pace, I can't help but connect this particular season with the insights gained from our past discussion.

Amid the festivities, there's an overwhelming sense of the year concluding faster than many of us might feel prepared for. In this episode, we aim to lean into these feelings, thoughts, and experiences, recognizing that some of us may benefit from a review of last year's discussion. Upon revisiting it myself, I found helpful reminders that resonate even today.

As the season looms on the horizon, the celebrations, hectic schedules, and the pressures of hosting and gift-giving can amplify stressors. In our conversation, Nevena sheds light on societal expectations and the challenges of establishing boundaries, exploring how these factors contribute to financial stress, anxiety, and exhaustion. We discuss the societal pressure to conceal personal struggles and the lack of outlets for relief.

Our intention today is to provide insights into varying perspectives during the holidays and to reassure those feeling overwhelmed that they are not alone. We address the struggles of maintaining a cheerful demeanor and share ways to gain insight and validation for thoughts, feelings, and sensations.

For those grappling with the challenges of the season, here are some coping strategies:

Reflect on your thoughts, feelings, and sensations; ground yourself in the present moment through activities like a body scan exercise.
Identify and name your feelings, whether by talking to someone or writing them down.
Take a moment to slow down and practice deep breathing.
Spend time outdoors to soak up some sunshine, especially during the winter.
Engage in physical activity that you enjoy, such as walking, going to the gym, practicing yoga, or dancing.
Maintain a balanced diet for overall well-being.
Cultivate gratitude by writing it down in a journal, on your phone, or simply reflecting on positive aspects.
Manage self-talk by being kind and patient with yourself.
Treat yourself to rewards like a massage, a good book, or a movie.
Reach out to someone you trust and feel comfortable with.
Ensure you get enough sleep and rest.
Let go of unrealistic expectations.
Incorporate meditation or guided visualization into your routine.
Seek professional help if needed.
Release certain expectations that may be causing stress.
Consider choosing not to celebrate if it brings relief.
Create new rituals and traditions that hold personal meaning for you.
As we navigate this busy season, may these strategies serve as a guide, offering support and a reminder that self-care is crucial during the holiday hustle. We'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Lets keep this conversation going.
