Well, hello, and welcome back to the Healthy Living Podcast. I'm your host, Joe Grumbine, and today we've got a very special guest. Her name is Jan Dalton. She's the co-founder of eBars, and she's got a great story that has to do with women's help, motherhood, faith, food purity, and functional wellness. And rather than going into a long, complicated intro, I'd like to just jump into a conversation. Jan, welcome to the show. It's so great to have you here today.
SPEAKER_01:Thank you so much for having me. I really appreciate it.
SPEAKER_00:I understand you just getting through some horrible weather out there in Tennessee. And I'm sitting here in sunny Southern California. We haven't it's 75 degrees and sunny, and we haven't had a lick of rain or snow or anything.
SPEAKER_01:Oh wow. Oh well, we can send you some of this.
SPEAKER_00:No, no, no, no. It's okay.
SPEAKER_01:We can exchange.
SPEAKER_00:Keep sending it east. I'm okay. I don't mind the rain, but yeah, where I live, we don't we don't do snow very often or very well.
SPEAKER_01:Well, we just uh we've got another front coming through. So we haven't, I don't know how many years it's been since a pure ice storm came. So this was an ice storm, trees exploding everywhere, power out for about seven days for a lot of animals still. So this is our first day back in. And uh it was it was pretty funny because we uh my husband and I were like, we're pretty healthy eaters, but I was like, I want a pizza. It's like when you pizza something, you want it, and I thought everything was pretty, you know, the ice had melted on the on the uh pavement of our driveway. The pizza guy got stuck on our driveway, and he had to leave his car there and Uber back. He called me today, go come in to get the car. He said, Is your driveway okay? I was like, it's okay. So it's been there for days.
SPEAKER_00:Oh man, that's crazy. Well, you know, it's funny, priorities shift when uh circumstances change, you know, and uh that's just another example of that. Yeah, Jen, why don't um you know I like to hear from our guests kind of how they got to where they are. We're gonna hear a lot about your company eBars, and and and I'm looking forward to hearing about all of that, but I really like to hear the story about how you came to where you are.
SPEAKER_01:Oh wow, what a journey. So we we started 13 years ago, and most people would think, okay, you're a bar company, what's taking you so long? And you know, it's a bar company. And but the bar, the bars we started out to make, we had no idea how hard it was gonna be because we had zero, we had no idea what we were doing, we had zero experience. My husband came from the golfing world. I can't, he was an entrepreneur in the golfing business. I was I worked for someone my whole life um at a design uh design firm, but it was like a corporate, so I knew nothing about food. I was a single mom, he was a single dad for 10 years, I was a single mom for seven years. Okay, and so the minute we met, fast food was my friend. I mean, I you know, it was that's what I knew.
SPEAKER_00:I was like I get it, I get it.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, so um but it was he started making a bar one of the bars we make now called the Man Bar. Someone else had named it for him, uh some of his friends, because he was making it so much. But he had, if I'm not mistaken, kidney stones, and it was due to the food he was eating. And so he set out on a journey to make a bar, and we hadn't once we met, he was making them a lot more because now I'm eating them, my my son's eating them. His son then thought I can make money and starts taking them to school to sell. Oh, nice. Yeah, and so when we decided to do this, I I just kept having this feeling that I needed to leave my job and go to work with him and do something in the golf world, is what I thought. And uh two weeks after I left my job, he was someone came and said they wanted to buy his company. And I'm thinking, oh my gosh, we're jobless, I don't know what to do with this. And so it happened so fast, and he got to where he said, I don't want to make these bars anymore. It's it's like I don't even get to enjoy them because everybody keeps taking them. And and so finally, though, after he started having dreams for two weeks, he would have a dream of a name and another name and another name. And I'm like, What's happening? And he said, I think we're supposed to make bars, and I'm like, What? And uh, and so he said, But I think they're gonna be what's not ever been done before. And I'm thinking, Great, we're gonna do something that's ever been done, and we've never done it.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, right. That's always the best way, yeah.
SPEAKER_01:And so, but the beauty of it is no one could tell us, no one, there was no one to tell us we couldn't do it.
SPEAKER_00:Right.
SPEAKER_01:And I didn't know the importance of that because I had lived my whole life looking over my shoulder, wondering, am I doing my job good enough? Am I am I doing am I uh am I failing as a mom? Is I as a single mom and working two jobs and you know, all the things that I had gone through, I was always I felt like I was always looking over my shoulder. And so just kind of waiting for that ball to drop. And so when we decided to do this, think about the names of our bars. Like uh he started having well again dreams, and he had dyslexia as a child. So as he's having dreams with the names of the bar, I'm thinking, how are you gonna trademark the name man? Right, woman immune. And he said, I don't know. I think they're gonna be um what is it? Um he would like man stands for men's advanced nutrition. So he said they're gonna be acronyms because with his dyslexia that he had when he was a child, he had to learn with abbreviations of things.
SPEAKER_00:Okay.
SPEAKER_01:And we're thinking, surely this has been done. And it hadn't. We so we started we spent several years in getting things trademarked, starting to work on how do we fine-tune these bars one at a time, because we only were making one at our home. And but he said, Jan, I feel like people's health I I could go buy a bar off the shelf, but there's 20 million of them, and they all say there are certain things. He said, How do we become different where we really make a difference in somebody's life, where we really give them an option? And so he started thinking about the term whole suiticals. You got nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, but he said, or nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, but he said, Where's the whole suitical? And so we went, got that trademarked, and then we were like, okay, here we go. And so then many years later, wondering how we're gonna, you know, it was so much time and energy going into it that I started losing that momentum. We both did. I mean, it was, but the people you were making these out of your kitchen. Well, that's a longer story, but we thought we were gonna make him out of our kitchen until he got his first piece of equipment. And I said, Well, how are we gonna know how to use it? And he goes, Well, another bar company uses it, so we should be able to use it. That I mean, it was literally the block, like it was like we it was dumb and dumber. I said, I hate to say it like that, but it was like one leading the other, neither one of us knowing what to do. But people, if it weren't for clients and put and future customers, I don't know if we could have done it because we had we would start talking to people that had cancer, that were dealing with dementia, that were diabetic, that had gut health issues. So we were like, okay, here we go. What do we how do we make bars that are functional, but also a delivery mechanism? So that was kind of where we set out to and we started ran, we would run across doctors, naturalists, and and said, How do we put this in? And so, like an example, we have a calm bar, and we knew that a lot of people, like an example is an airplane, getting on an airplane, you know, you might take medication if you get anxiety flying, right?
SPEAKER_03:Right.
SPEAKER_01:But we had ran across a couple of doctors that said, Hey, if you put rhodiola, astrogonda, and cordyceps, we've never heard of these. And so if you put them together, they give a natural calming effect to the body, right? But then if you put them in a cold-pressed whole food product that your body recognizes that, what's gonna happen? It is it gonna the absorption rate, everything, it does it get better. And so we were like, let's try it. And so that's how our calm bar came about. So every bar that we make has a function.
SPEAKER_00:Nice, yeah. It sounds like um they do that kind of thing with gummy bears and stuff, but it's all sugar candy.
SPEAKER_01:So everything we do in-house, um, the we had the technology going in the bars, the understanding of it, but the taste was an issue.
SPEAKER_00:And so most of those herbs are a little bitter or they don't, you know, I like Valerian kind of tastes like an old foot. I mean, you know, it's uh yeah, all these different I I'm a formulator too, so I I work with a lot of these different uh oh wows. And so I know some of these things are so bitter, like you gotta do something about it, or nobody's gonna be able to eat it.
SPEAKER_01:Well, we started putting moringa in one of them. And if you've taken moringa, that's that's quite a thing to try to get down. And and I learned the hard way not to try to mix it with water.
SPEAKER_00:They put it in kills, you just swallow it and it's all down.
SPEAKER_01:I know, I know. And so that was one of the things. So we finally my husband said, I don't want to have to do this, but I I had a dream, and I thought, oh no. And he saw himself learning to make chocolate.
SPEAKER_03:Wow.
SPEAKER_01:And he was like, I don't want to learn to make chocolate. I don't want to make chocolate, you know, and so that took about eight months of us learning to make a chocolate. But by the time we were done, um, we had a diabetic-friendly chocolate and didn't know it, and it tasted amazing. So it was the game changer in how we make our bars, and we roast everything ourselves. We roast our almonds and we make the almond butter fresh. We we have a good shelf life on it, a six-month shelf life. So we went into our first stores, Whole Foods, and even into the southern region. And Whole Foods had even told us you've created a new class and category of a bar, but we don't know what to do with you. He said we we either can put you in a vitamin aisle, we can put you in a cold section if you want to put them in the refrigerator, or we're gonna put you in the bar aisle, and you're gonna have to find a way to get people, you know, for people to hear about it.
SPEAKER_00:Right, right. Yeah, somehow you stand out in the midst of all those bars.
SPEAKER_01:Yes, because our shelf life, even though we have a six-month shelf life, they're still cold pressed. So you're getting a very healthy bar made with ingredients that are really helping to boost the immune system. You're really aiding in that boosting the immune system. So they're you're getting more than energy, more than just a health bar, an energy bar. You're getting truly something that it's functional.
SPEAKER_00:And getting into Whole Foods, I mean, that's no small task in itself.
SPEAKER_01:So No, because we had tried, thankfully, we had tried distributors, we had tried everything. I mean, years went by of us trying to figure out how to get out with this product, and it was like nothing. It's it's so out of the box that ever us even getting out there, we have to create out-of-the-box ways of going in. And so we ship direct usually. Okay. Because we found that's the best way online because the client gets the freshest products. Um, and again, they don't have to go in the refrigerator. Uh, they if you want to eat extend it, you can. We put that six-month shelf life on it. Right. So I look forward to sending you some, gifting you some.
SPEAKER_00:Oh, that sounds funny.
SPEAKER_01:I need you, I want you to try them.
SPEAKER_00:I would love to try them. And you know, like I said, there's um a lot of my guests come back and we talk again and again. And you know, maybe we'll come back and and visit it after I've had a chance to to talk about that. So uh, you know, now you're hitting the big leagues. You're you're you're in Whole Foods and probably other stores. How how is your I'm curious about your manufacturing, how is that growing along with it? You know, you get a piece of equipment, you guys finally figured it out, obviously. Um, you you must have moved into some kind of a facility where you're able to make food and get that all you know certified.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, so so we we have the facility, and then we had someone come in and said, I think you're gonna need a larger facility. And we're like, well, we don't really have clients. Now, just to let you know, we're just we're in the southern regions and Whole Foods, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida. So we haven't expanded out. That's why I'm super excited. Like, we used to be told all the time, if you had started in California, you would have already taken off. And and I and I was like, yeah, and and so it was really quite an adventure starting in Franklin, Tennessee. Like it, that in itself has taken time to grow and and to expand. Um, but we have the facility itself kept growing.
SPEAKER_02:Okay.
SPEAKER_01:Like we we went down a private label venture. We thought, well, we'll private label for someone while we're trying to get our products out there. So that helped us grow. We're not in the private label business, right? But we loved it.
SPEAKER_00:That's a whole thing in itself.
SPEAKER_01:I know that was like that. We went at one point, just to let you know, we had the wrapper. We couldn't use the wrapper we bought that my husband said, Let's get a wrapper. We had to get a facility to put it in because it came in, it was way too big for our house.
SPEAKER_03:Oh no.
SPEAKER_01:But now we have to have an assembly line. So we found ourselves hand rolling out bars, and we had our first large order with a private label where we had to hand, I I'm almost can't believe it. We had to hand roll out 17,000 bars.
SPEAKER_00:Oh my goodness. Wow.
SPEAKER_01:That was an immediate. We had they didn't know they were gonna grow that fast, and we didn't know they were, and all of a sudden, but it allowed us to now get our assembly line.
SPEAKER_00:Right. You figure it out pretty good after the first couple thousand I've been.
SPEAKER_01:It was I didn't know how to hire people. I'm not kidding you. I called my old boss and I said, I just want to apologize to you for every time I called out sick and I wasn't really sick. I said, or I just came in late and said it was whatever, because I had heard I have had so many experiences now the hard way learning that I it was almost it's comical when I think about it, but at the time I was crying a lot.
SPEAKER_00:I can I can totally appreciate that. It's as a small business owner. Uh employees can be the biggest heartbreak and nightmare and headache. And if you get a good one, though, they're worth their weight in gold.
SPEAKER_01:Oh my goodness. Yes, I agree. I agree. I agree. So, but so now we have a facility, we have the equipment. Now, now is the process time where we're learning to grow. We're trying to figure out how do we grow, especially the online. Because the online is where we know the clients are going to get that freshest product. Um, and like again, the clients are a big part of what we do. So, one of the things that we did on the bars, we put a version. So, like version 1.0, 1.1. Oh nice. Yeah, because every time the client called, like a woman bar, we knew the woman was made for hormone balance, uh, hair, nails, and skin. And but women's gut issues are with I have gut issues myself. And so we were like, okay, how do we fix this where people can, you know, where women can eat this and not have the gut issue, gut health issues with it. And so we did we came across someone uh the lectin-free. I'm sure you heard of Dr. Gundry. It was oh yeah, we just ran across him on an ad one day, and my husband's like, maybe we can do that. And so he got in, practiced. Well, how do we remove some stuff, remake it, and we were able to take remove the lectins out of it. So to get it gut, yeah. So we've really it's been 13 years of learning and and 13 years of listening to other people. How do we make these better? And so now we've got the facility, we've got the place, we've got the ability to expand. You know, we're just now how do we get out there?
SPEAKER_00:Nice.
SPEAKER_01:So I'm super excited that you had me on today. I really appreciate it.
SPEAKER_00:Oh, this is a great story. And you know, like I said, as a small business owner, we've had many, many guests that are, you know, in a similar sort of path, a different product, a different story. But you know, there's this struggle of you know, building something from scratch. We all have that story. And you know, what people don't realize, people are like, oh, you're so lucky you have your own business. It's like, okay, you don't understand what that means. That means I've got four full-time jobs now. You know, you're a mother, you're a your wife, you're you're a homekeeper, you're you're then all the 12 jobs you do at your at your work.
SPEAKER_01:And we were sleeping here, we were sleeping at the office for the first couple of years. I mean, and still to this day, where I mean, I'm again, we can we have the ability to grow, but now we work it with our crew. Like I'm in there doing shipping, customer service. We're you know, we're all in there doing production because we know until we do get to that place of expanding, again, we've got everything to expand. So it's I think you're you are right in that, that it's one thing, it's a it's a wonderful idea to think about being a business owner, but to actually walk in this walk it out is probably by far, my husband and I have said it is the hardest thing we've ever done. And I think that if it weren't for all the stories we get from clients, I don't know if we could have held out, like it's because I get it, I completely get it.
SPEAKER_00:That's important now. There's there are so many elements to this that I'm I'm kind of going through my journey and going, you know, there was all these little pieces, but I think it's really important that you guys are are in the trenches with your with your team because if you know intimately how everything works and you just hire it out, you don't know when you're getting worked over, you don't know if they're doing a lousy job, you don't know, you don't know anything really. And then all of a sudden you come back, get hit with a problem. Somebody's like, Hey, you got a problem over here, and you're like, I don't know, I gotta call the guy. But when you're in the trenches with it, you know, you know intimately where to go and and and how to go after it. So what you know, it's it's a lot easier. Most people, I think, you know, just outsource their solutions. Yes.
SPEAKER_01:We didn't know, we didn't know anybody. When I tell you we started not knowing anything, it's like we started the process. It was a gift, not knowing how to do this and not knowing anyone in this business, because I don't know if the bars would be where they are right now. And at the same time, when I found out that other people, a lot of because we had some bar people coming to us asking us to make their bars, but we're a certified organic uh company, so we that hinders us right there from the get-go on what we can make and can't make because all of our products are certified, and so but that's when and all of a sudden I sat back and I was like, wait a minute. You mean we could have outshers? That's not how we found out. And I mean, we've we've had orders where we would have to drive across the country to go fix something that maybe we we got the labels in and didn't realize something, and we had to go grab them. It's been so much to learn how to do what we're doing 13 years later that I think if I had known all of this back then, I probably they wouldn't be where they are. Somebody else would be making them and we may have sold it. And so it really we've just said, you know, it's funny. I'm they've got a piece of paper here. If I were to draw draw a circle in the middle of this, I'm like, we're right in the middle with everybody else out here. I just we always said, you know, if we're doing this for others, we'll be in the middle, we'll be taken care of, but our goal can't be about us. It's got to be why we started this from the get-go. Because if we make it about us, we've had those moments where I'm just so physically exhausted, or I'm just I have nothing left. It feels like I have nothing left to give. That I that I start getting on me and I forget the goal is why we're doing this for others. And I I think that's when people start to give up.
SPEAKER_00:I think when we get to that place where it's just about hand packing 17,000 bars, and you're like, oh, maybe I can do it.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, yeah, yeah, and hand rolling them out.
SPEAKER_00:So I I I see in some of your notes, um, you know, you obviously have a values-driven business, but um, it says you're rooted in faith, integrity, and stewardship. Why don't you tell me a little bit about that? I I have a deep faith myself, and I think that that's an important piece of a puzzle. I don't want to leave it out.
SPEAKER_01:So, again, for my husband, we felt like the Lord was giving him dreams. You when you have that many dreams back to back to back, you know, some your calling is calling you.
SPEAKER_00:Sure.
SPEAKER_01:And for me, I didn't know my place here. I was just like, okay, whatever it is, we'll do it. As long as we're in unity, we can do this. But a couple of years into it, when we saw the cost of what it was to do this, uh, not just the monetary cost, the family cost, all of it was costing everywhere. And I remember I got to where I was coming in so depressed. I thought single momhood is one thing, but now blended family, brand new bit trying to start a business two years into a marriage with a blended family and all this. Um I I was crying more than I was smiling. And I remember walking in the doors. Now, three things I felt like the Lord had given me. One, I'm building a place of refuge, don't turn them away. Two, give me what is mine, I'll give you back what is mine. And three, I've put me in your products.
SPEAKER_00:Nice.
SPEAKER_01:I didn't know what any of that meant though.
SPEAKER_00:Right.
SPEAKER_01:That came eight years later. But what came within the first few years was I was coming in crying. I'd already been given that three years ago. That was what the Lord had given me, and I'd written it down, but I'd forgotten it by now. And I was coming in thinking I knew what a faith-based business was, and I didn't. I did not know. I thought I knew the Lord, I didn't know him. And and so now I'm coming in and I am locking the door, I'm turning people away. Um so about how are we gonna do this? I was just in a panic all the time, stressed all the time. Finally, I heard I heard one night the Lord say, I can get, I I I I can what is it? You've turned them away, and I asked you not to. And he said, I can close the doors tomorrow if it would be easier for you.
SPEAKER_00:Whoa.
SPEAKER_01:It it was as loud as you and me right now. It was so strong that it was like the fear of the Lord came upon me, and I was like, because yeah, no, I it it scared me. And I and so I started coming in. I came in that morning almost running and leaping in through that front door. I mean, I came in praising, I came in happy, I came, I was like, no, I want this, and I think it was the first time, you know, you got the fairy tale moment, even in a relationship, right? But then the reality of the fairy tale hits, and you forget what you started with, and that was and all of a sudden I was reminded, no, I um I'm in this, I want this, I want this for your people. You've called us to do it, and we're gonna do it. And so it was about eight years later, though, or three years, two to three years into that moment, and then fast forward on our eighth year, that's really when I fell apart. That's when I truly fell apart. And I started going outside just for walks and at midnight. Who does that? I don't even go outside anymore. And so on my third night, I thought, I can't feel you. I I'm no good for my family, no good for at work. I'm I'm we're falling apart. I don't know how to do all this. It's too big for us, it's too big. And I had forgotten even what a big God we have. And so the third night I hit the ground in the middle of the street, literally sobbing in my neighborhood, and I to the point where I couldn't stand up. And uh that was a moment where my life changed, where I literally felt the presence of the Lord come on me and say, get up. I'm gonna give you what you've asked for. And it was like a download that nobody will ever get credit for but him. And it was like everything changed after that for me. I started coming in, learning how to pray. Oh, like my prayer over this place was not just I'm praying, I started getting scripture out, speaking life into every like everything we make was created before I ever got here.
SPEAKER_03:Sure.
SPEAKER_01:And it was like, and and so I just said, Lord, I'm registering this company in heaven with you. I never heard of that before. And I said, I'm registering e-bars to you. Same way my husband went down. I I felt like he gave me a blueprint of how to register it with him. And then I went into every bar and I said, Here's your job, here's your function, here's your purpose, here's your job. And when you go into these people's homes, this is what you're supposed to do. And I think I had never been taught, I was always the half the glass half empty. Okay, and I had never been taught how to take scripture and truly use it. Wow, and it changed my life, it literally changed my life, and gave it's like I came to know the Lord on a deeper level, intimacy that I thought even my husband told me one day finally. He was just like he was an evangelist for 15 years earlier, way before I ever met him. And he told me after all of this, this experience with the Lord, he said, I thought I knew the Lord, but I didn't. And I think so that's kind of where we are now.
SPEAKER_00:What a beautiful story. Well, Jen, as I suspected, we were gonna get into a great conversation, go a little bit over time, and that's okay. Um, but I I'd like to know if you were to be able to wrap all your experience into a thought that you'd like to share with the audience, what do you think that would be?
SPEAKER_01:You know what would that be? You know, everybody wants to know what what's my purpose? What am I supposed to do? What am I this? If my only job was to be on this earth to love people, that would be good enough for me. So no matter what I'm doing, I've often told people, uh I've had quite a few people call me at times saying, you know, I don't like my job, I don't like this, don't like that. I'm like, check, check, check, done all that. And I said, you know, but if my job on this earth is to just love others, right? Even when it's the hardest, it's like, how do I how do I leave that light be of God, that that spirit being, that that light of God, how do we leave that mark in that spot for whatever time he's got us there? No matter how hard it is, how do I stay on my knees at home before him, thank God it's hard, crying it out, but choosing not to go in and talk negatively about others, remembering that I work for him, not them, even though I have to be there. Gotta have, you know, gotta have the job, but we we I work for him every day that I come in here, I work for him saying, Who who is this for today? Who is it for today? Because that's my job here. And so I think that probably is because that's one of the hardest things, enjoying where we are, whether we're a business owner or working for somebody. And I've spent most of my existence always looking over my shoulder, working for somebody, and then half of this company time doing that, that for the first time in my life, it's just God, what do you my purpose is to leave you, Lord, in this place that I'm at right now for somebody else?

SPEAKER_01:And can I say one thing about you? Sure. I want to say thank you for who the Lord's made you to be. And because from the moment I told you I'm not good, I'm not, I'm new to podcasts. From the moment we started talking, even before we came on, you were so laid back. Like I keep feeling like the word cool, like you're cool. And I think people that watch you would say the same thing. Like you just are very laid back and so inviting. So thank you.
SPEAKER_00:Well, you know, I I'll tell you a little secret. Um, I I just spent the last year and a half battling a very aggressive cancer that almost killed me. And I spent a whole lot of time with God and um got my priorities a little bit changed. And uh so this is a big part of what I'm here to do is to share different people's stories and and help people find a healthy life. And in doing so, we bring God into the into their lives. And sometimes He sneaks in, sometimes He comes in with a hammer, but it's always it's it's a tool, and I love what I do. And so I love to be alive, I love all of this and all the little things that used to bug me and I used to get uptight about, they're all gone. They don't they don't exist anymore.
