Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Have you ever spent three hours clearing your inbox, organizing your digital files, or cleaning your desk, and felt completely satisfied with how "productive" your day was?
Let's face the brutal reality: You weren't being productive. You were running on a treadmill—expending massive amounts of energy without moving an inch closer to your high-priority goals.
Welcome to the trap of productive procrastination.
Unlike traditional procrastination (like scrolling social media or watching Netflix), productive procrastination is an anxiety management tool dressed up in a suit. Because the tasks you’re doing are genuinely useful, your subconscious mind uses them to shield you from the discomfort, overwhelm, or fear of failure tied to your one big task. You feel accomplished, but your major assets are left collecting dust.
In this episode, we break down the exact psychological framework behind why our brains play this trick on us, and how to shift from being chronically busy to being deeply effective. If you’re trying to build an independent business, execute an exit plan from your day job, or finish a major creative project, you cannot afford to let maintenance work steal your peak bandwidth.
Inside this episode, you’ll discover:
Yo, it's your main man, Raheem Rossiel, man. You ever spent your whole day cleaning, moving some boxes, making sure the closet was great, washing out your car. You feel me? Like just doing all the activities to make you feel productive. You feel me? Just doing everything to make you feel like, oh yeah, I did something today. I got some things done today. But not doing that main thing. You feel me? Like, let's be honest, man. You weren't productive. You were just running on a treadmill. You feel me? You expended a massive amount of energy, but you didn't move an inch closer to your actual dreams, your actual goals. You didn't make it there. You let that ride. You let this slide. You feel me? Like this is productive procrastination. You feel me? Like, we're gonna talk about this all week, right? So the ultimate psychological trap because it um allows you to avoid the most important work without the guilt of feeling lazy. You dig like we all do that. You feel me? You may not be scrolling TikTok. You feel me? You may not just be doing things that really make you feel lazy. But the main thing it does, you feel me? It makes you lazy in the wrong area. You feel me? It makes you lazy in your real work. So today, man, in this video, I'm gonna break down the psychological behind why your brain plays tricks on you. And I'm going to give you a ruthless four-step framework on how to push that to the end. You feel me? Like break the dick. Stop just stacking up the damn cards. Going outside, sweeping the damn the dick. Like just doing little small things today, man. We're gonna get right into it, man. So let's do it. So first thing we're gonna go after is, man, the psychological of it. Like you feel me, the psychological. That word is so crazy to me sometimes. The psychology of it, right? And the psychology of this, man, traditional procrastination is usually about laziness or zoning out, like scrolling social media. Productive procrastination is about anxiety management. You dig? So you just like when you cleaning up, you really just what? Being management, you be you managing your um anxiety, basically. Like it says productive procrastination is about anxiety management. So sometimes people got a lot of anxiety, they want to clean up. I think that's probably me sometimes. I'm gonna go clean the whole house just to manage how I feel, you dig. So this is me thinking I'm being where productive, thinking I'm doing something that's gonna move the needle in my life. You feel me? And this may not move the needle at all because it's a what low-level activity. When I got these low-level activities going on, I can't really get into a a good script, a good scribe, you feel me? Because my production is what? It's it's halted, right? So productive procrastination is is like it's a trap. It's the act of being incredibly busy with useful low priority tasks and avoiding the one high priority task that actually matters. Like when you're doing things that really don't matter, man, you're tricking yourself out of your bag. You feel me? Like when a project feels massive, intimidating, it carries a risk of failure. You feel me? Your brain seeks safety. Low state tasks offer an immediate hit of dopamine and a false sense of progress, allowing you to avoid the discomfort of a big task without the guilt of being lazy. You dig so let's look at our low-level tasks. I always talk about that, like what's the main thing? Like, what's like it's this quote I got. Um, it says, like, a hero always wants something specific. Like, they always want something specific. Like, here you go. I got it out of um Heroes on the Mission. It says a hero always wants something specific. Like, you gotta be specific. Like, what is it that's the main thing? What's gonna make you better? What's gonna push you to be this version, uh, you know, or that version. So what's gonna push you? You feel me? So let's get it right. If I hear that this nose outside. So man, look here. The four-step framework, number one, is identify the one thing. Like, what's the thing that you if you do this first before opening any tasks, write down this single most important task for the day. If you only can get one thing done before the day steals your bandwidth, what must like what must it be? Like you feel me? Everything else is secondary. Like if you can get something started right now, the first thing you can do before the day say, I'm gonna take all your energy, what would it be? Go ahead and do that because you know this will what complete the task. This is gonna push the needle. Like I know me making my video Monday through Friday, it needs to be money through Saturday, Sunday, it's gonna push the needle, right? So I keep doing it, right? So I identify that one major say before I do anything else. What was gonna push the needle? Because I feel like me running, oh no, I'm just this not, you know, that used to be uh goal, but now that's okay, that's not pushing the needle, that's keeping you busy, you feel me? Cleaning up like these are all signs of what staying busy. So Lord of entry, man, Lord about to entry, conquer weak thoughts, right? Conquer weak thoughts when you conquer weak thoughts, big tags trigger avoidance because you feel overwhelming. Marco them in Marco step the lunge. Don't tell yourself I need to build an um entire presentation. Tell yourself I'm going to open a software and write the title slides. Like giving yourself the oh, it ain't finna be hard, like tricking your brain. Come on, man. Like get your ass over here. We're finna do this right now. We're finna make sure that this happened right now. We're not finna let nothing affect us and get us off our game, right? Like, I could stop right now and be mad about what's going on outside, going like, what the fuck going on? You feel me? And it may not be nothing. You feel me? Just just doing things to make sure that okay, I'm started and I'm not stopping. You feel me? Like, I know when I started this, I don't want to stop. I don't want to have to go over this again. You feel me? So I make sure everything is clean and clear before I get my mind started. So this is how I conquer my weak thoughts already telling myself, like, it's gonna be easy. Like it's not gonna be hard. Like, we just finna do this part today. We're gonna break it into what's a micro step, small step. So the smaller the steps, the quicker I can get my brain in in the process of going. And the next thing is, man. The next thing is, man, I want to implement a no-prep buffer. Feel me, like block out friction. Like, once I block out this friction, right? Like, productive procrastination love prepping to work. Like, people who always just prepping, you feel me? Like, if you if there's something that you gotta do, set a time. Like, this is about setting yourself up so you won't procrastinate. Okay, you like doing dumb shit before you do it? Set a time for 10 minutes on this shit. 10 minutes. You're gonna take you 10 minutes to straighten up and get things rolling. You feel me? After that, 10 minutes, it's it's done. Bang, cleaning, organizing, and researching. Like everything goes out the way. Let's do the main thing. You must enter it to a stare at a blank page or work on the primary task. You feel me? It says boredom will eventually make you start. You feel me? So now you can't do nothing else for you to get this over with. That's all you got time to do is get this over. So let's get it rocking, right? And there's step three, man. And the last step is earn your low-level task. Like earn the low-level priority. You know the low-level priority, easy. That's why your brain wants to do it. You know, it's it's smooth, and that's why your brain wanna, you know, do something that's less um cause less friction on the brain. So fuck that. It's gotta go through that so your brain, because so like running used to be has caused my brain to have friction. Now it's like an automatic, like it's it's gonna do it automatically. Like it's no friction on it. Like let's just it's let it's like let's go do it. Like this it. It's no, oh damn, nah, it's just come on. So I gotta use that with everything I do. So don't try to, you know, try to do this and you haven't earned the permission to do the thing that's easy. You feel me? Like, treat your administrative low task chores as a reward. You are allowed to organize the files, reply to those non-urgent emails, or clean your workspace only after you put 45 minutes of deep focus into your primary asset. You feel me? So if you ain't put that time in until what you're supposed to do, don't do the other stuff yet. Wait till you know have finished that main thing, then you can go to the lower level activity, then you can fix this, then you can make sure that this is good. Like, but if you ain't making sure that's good, this the lower level task should not be done. You feel me? Like the it says this this is the main rule. The 95% rule of focus. 95% of your professional or creative growth comes from the 5% task that make you uncomfortable. If a task doesn't make you feel a bit of friction, it's probably a maintenance task, not a growth task. You feel me? Like some shit, like I said earlier, like running is no longer making me grow no more. I'm not trying to grow run no marathon right now. I'm not trying to, you know, do this, do that right now. But once I see that this is not causing me to grow, it's not a task of growth. It's a task of maintenance. You feel me? I'm cleaning up this maintenance, I'm wiping down its maintenance. So let's stop the maintenance. So let's get on with the main thing is, man. I hope this video y'all in some type of way, man. I hope we don't want too much noise in the background. I hope y'all got them under some more urgency on y'all's discipline and on y'all procrastination and knowing when you are productive procrastinating. You feel me? So keep that on your mind. Am I being productive and procrastinating? Because I know this is not what I supposed to be doing, but I'm doing it just because I can. You feel me? Once you feel that, cut that tas to the bottom, put it to the bottom. When that when that task is no longer causing you no friction, when it's easy, ABC and D, no. No, no, no. Time to switch it up. You feel me? Add some weights. You feel me? Let's let's put some more on the bar. Let's let's add some friction. Because now we not we not growing. And the main thing, man, we want to grow and we wanna, you know, have maintenance too, once after the growth. So we need the maintenance too. So don't get rid of the maintenance, just keep it, bring it with you, but just do less of it. Don't use it as a coping mechanism to not do the real thing, man. If the video helps y'all in any kind of way, man, y'all like, comment, and subscribe, man. Stop playing your time, y'all stop playing y'all like managed.
