Dopamine detoxing is trending across social media as a cure-all for brain fog and procrastination, but the neuroscience behind it tells a very different story. In this episode, we unpack the myths surrounding "flushing out dopamine" and explain how your brain’s reward pathways actually operate. Discover why extreme abstinence fasts usually trigger rebound binging—and learn the evidence-based behavioral strategies you can use to tame overstimulation, break compulsive scrolling habits, and rebuild focus in the real world.
Yo, it's your main man Bryan Bryal. Today, man, resetting your brain reward system isn't about cutting out your pleasures, right? It's about finding that baseline, that high stimulation habit that has been hijacked. You dig? Like when you have low stimulus tasks, like deep work or a quiet focus starting to feel impossibly boring. Like you can't do nothing that really requires your focus. You can't really handle no business no more. It's time to detox those levels of dopamine. You dig? It's a sign that your dopamine receptors have down regulated to protect themselves from constant spikes. Resensitizing those receptors requires a deliberate shift in how, when, and when you and why you access the reward. You feel me? Like today, we're gonna talk about dopamine detox versus real life detox. You feel me? Like we're gonna have it, right? We're gonna get into what's going on in your dopamine in your reward system. When and where should this thing be managed? You dig the term dopamine is popular online for premises of a quick, dramatic, hard reset of your brain. But real life requires sustainable neurochemicals, neurochemicals management after rather than the extreme extreme isolation, meaning that if I you if I'm so used to doing something and I have dopamine while I'm doing it, it's gonna be hella hard for my brain to focus or maintain without it. You feel me? It's gonna be hella hard for my brain to go through that peak crash and deficient stage. You feel me? Because dopamine, it got the oh, I'm feeling good till I'm feeling down. You feel me? And this is basically when you feeling down, you need to lower your lower or higher your dopamine level. You feel me? Whereas like the natural baseline. You feel me? You can go past it or you can go under it. Once you go under it, you feel like damn, something wrong, something missing, you feel me? So on this one, we're gonna get into it, right? Dimension, the core permission, internet dopamine detox. Let's just get into the the dimensions of it. Then we're gonna get into the topics of it, right? The dimension, internet detox. Sit in a dark room for 24 to 48 hours, zero music screams, and food or interaction. Okay? That's an internet dopamine detox. This is a real life detox. Rebalance daily habits by managing friction and stimulus layering over weeks. So you rebalance by managing your daily habits. You feel me? Like what you're doing all day. Like an internet dopamine detox. You can just sit in your room all day, just sit there. Sit there. But if you want to not have that type of feeling or need that urge, you can sit in your room all day for 24 hours, just listen to music, let shit, watch the screen, eat food all day. You feel me? Like that's something that you don't want to get used to doing, right? And this is another one. Scientific reality. Your brain produces dopamine constantly, and you cannot flush or stop it. This is the real life. Deregulate D2 receptors take two to four weeks of consistent of lower stimulation to recover. So everything's basically like you just trying to lower what already is what is. You feel me? You probably like everybody got different ways that they can get like um dopamine spikes, part from food, from argument, from different shit. Some some of them bad, some of them good. You feel me? Like you can get dopamine from a lot of ways. You can get a spike in your cortisol levels real quick. Like sustainability, high failure rate leads to severe binging immediately after 24 hours is ending. High retention builds long-term systems around deep work and intention, intentional downtime. So I'm gonna I'm learning this, like I'm y'all. I'm learning this with y'all as I learn. So I'm trying to see how I'm trying to say this in nigga terms. And the next one is approach to triggers, complete avoidance of all modern technology and basic comfort. So you just learning, teaching yourself, bro. I don't need this for to be happy. I don't need to see this to be feel the way. So this is real life versus the same thing, right? Real life versus the internet world. And it's basically saying, like, this this whole thing is telling me get away from the fake, those detox. Like, this is what we're talking about all week, getting in and away from the fake detox. And it's hard to get away from the fake detox when you're so used to what having the fake rewards, having that fake conversation, right? So let's get into the symptoms of this, right? The first step is gonna be, man, number one, we gotta we're gonna have this phase of where we have withdrawal from this stuff, right? Like once you withdraw for some shit, it's it's like that's another story, right? So let's let's talk about it. Number one, enforce a 30-day elimination period. Neurons which are unregulated takes time. Choose your primary high stimulation triggers, short term short form videos, video games, high potential, um, hyper-processed foods, audit adult content, and cut them entirely for 14 to 30 days. The first days, the first 10 days usually become brain irritable and restlessness as your brain stays in temporary dopamine deficient state before before normalizing. So basically saying that them couple them first couple days ain't fan ain't they ain't finna be sweet. They ain't finna uh allow you to have the best like your best life. You're not finna feel the norm, but once you get over that hump, this is now this is your new norm. Right? So it's basically all talking about this. We can try to get a new norm. Our new norm. What our what do we operate at for like what is our new norm? Like, this is my norm. Okay, this is what I'm on. You feel me? Number two, stop dopamine layering, combining multi-lore effort reward trains your brain to require screen stimulation for basic focus, right? So avoid listening to podcasts while gaming, watching TV while scrolling on social media, or needing music slash books for every mooding task, right? So this is telling your brain, like, man, practice single tasks during choice, walking in and work blocks in your to recalibrate your baseline. So it's saying stop doing shit at stop doing so much shit at one time. Do one thing at a time. Allow your brain to do this. I did finish that. Do that, not watch TV and be on the phone. Not goddamn be scrolling and watching TV, not be doing something and you need music and you need an audiobook, like, you know, just learn that task of needing uh uh you can't you can't do the work in a with a side of mine, you know. I I hate doing like I think a side of mine is an idol mind. Like, I don't like my brain sitting on, I like listening to some podcasts, some music. I go flipping back and forth to that. So, you know, just but you gotta know how to layer this shit. You don't want too much of it. Need this to make your day go by, right? Number three, this is the um flip the dopamine order, effort before reward. Dophamine released during the during efforts, it elevates your baseline and creates substained drive. Dophamin received before or without efforts crashes your baseline. Passive reward, scrolling before working, spike, sharp, sharp crash, low, low motivation. You feel me? So this saying passive reward, you already I woke up the morning, I started scrolling. You feel me? Boom, a spike. You feel me? Then sharp ass crash, then low motivation. Then the active effort, hard exercise of deep work. See, this is what I did today. I got right when I woke up, I just straight over here, but I did get in my phone for a couple of seconds. Today I gave myself a day off. So I said today I'm gonna get up late. You feel me? I'm gonna sleep as long as I want to sleep today. Then I'm what hard today when I get up, I'm gonna go straight to my I didn't go running yet. I didn't read yet. I didn't sit in my gratitude yet. I said, let me go straight to this. I can do that after I do this. Because this is the hardest thing in the day, right? This is the deep work for me. Gradual release, sustain move and elevation without a severe crash. So once you have gradual releases, man, you can sustain that move. You know, right now I can I can sustain this move right all day now. Because I'm I'm in that mode. I'm detoxing right now. I'm doing four days. I posted it yesterday, but I did not smoke yesterday. So today I'm doing four days, no smoking. Like just detoxing my brain, like letting it get used to something else. Like letting it like showing myself that I'm not, I'm I I do not need that, right? So next thing is build environmental friction. Willpower drains quickly when you reward your system and is det is desensitized. Place physics place physical and digital barriers between yourself and instant gratification sources. Move your front of the bedroom at night. Use app blockers with passcode locks managed by someone else. Hyper keep hyper palatable snacks out of your um immediate living environment. So this is all he's saying, man. Like, man, if I don't, if I want to change my dopamine levels, I gotta get rid of a lot of shit. I gotta flip the script on how I'm moving. I gotta flip the script on what I'm got going on and what's grooving in my life. Once I flip the script on that, I can I can move better. I can think better. I can feel better. But as long as my dopamine levels only require me to do dumb shit, as long as my dopamine levels are only being spiked by the thing that hurt me, I ain't I can I can't never just get ahead of what I'm already on. Because it's I'm studying, looking for that that short and that fake dopamine, fake um hit start of that real life hit, that that thing that's gonna make me feel better in the future. That thing that's gonna make me feel better in a moment. You feel me? Like you're getting that thing that makes you feel better in a moment, but it's really only for the moment. You get some, you can do do some things in a moment, and that moment can transfer to the next moment and make the next moment better. But some shit, most of the shit you're doing is gonna make the next moment worse because you killing your dopamine level. You're gonna need this, and when you get there, you can't use that. So let's use what we can, man. Let's use that natural high, man, that real life dopamine chase. Like, let's get something that we really can thrive off of and survive off of. And once we do that, we have created a personal 14-day dopamine recept plan. Like, we we didn't dig that to ourselves. Once we didn't got rid of certain things, and this today, we're gonna get rid of whatever you feel like you need to get rid of. Just like let it go. Lower the baseline. So when you get back to it, it's gonna be way better, right? Because you didn't lower your baseline, you didn't show it who you didn't showed it who's in control. So show your life, show yourself who's in control by uh letting that thing go that's bothering you. You feel me? Getting that new level, that new baseline. You feel me? Get that new boundary set in your life. Like once you get that boundary set up, bro. Nobody can be able to stop you, man. And this video helps y'all in any kind of way, man. Y'all like, y'all come in, y'all subscribe, man. Y'all, y'all detox, y'all mind, y'all life. And then tomorrow we're gonna talk about some more detoxing. We're gonna talk about some more release, releasing things that are not good for us. Once we release these things, we we cannot be stopped, man. Let's go, man.
