Ever since Forward-Facing Sonar entered the fishing tournament scene there has been a decline in competitors in most of Montana’s fishing tournaments. That’s why the Gallatin Chapter of Montana Walleyes Unlimited decided to add something new to this year’s Canyon Ferry Walleye Festival. That is what your host of the Montana Outdoor Podcast, Downrigger Dale is talking about with Tournament Director Eve Parrow. So, what did they add you ask? A choice! That’s right, they created two competition categories that they call the Tournament Class and the new Social Class. As Rigger put it; “This just might solve a problem that many anglers have had with fishing tournaments these days!”. The Tournament Class, which has an entry fee of $420, will be for those who love to use the new high tech Forward-Facing Sonar or just don’t mind competing against those who do, and the Social Class which has a much lower entry fee of just $200 will be exclusively for those who will not use Forward-Facing Sonar, basically for those who want to compete against those who compete with low tech or no tech. Of course, there are a specific details and rules that go with these new competitive categories and that is why you for sure should watch or listen to this week’s podcast. Tourney Director Eve Parrow does a great job of covering what you need to know. Eve also talks about all the ways that the whole family can have a blast at this year’s Canyon Ferry Walleye Festival! In fact, one tidbit we found super interesting is that in the Social Class up to 5 people can be in a competing boat. Course, only the two-person team can fish but the rest can have some fun cheering them on in the boat! And there is even more things that just might surprise you so, for sure watch or listen to this podcast. Then check out the links below and of course let Rigger know what you think!

Welcome, welcome everyone, and thank you so much for joining me today. You know, it wasn't too long ago that I was talking to some folks from the Governor's Cup and they had made some changes to their tournament. Some really interesting changes, and I think we're gonna have a lot of fun at the Gov Cup this year. But there's another tournament that's coming up before that. A tournament that is a lot of fun. I mean, this is a great tournament, and it's on one of a walleye fisherman's favorite lakes, and that's Canyon Ferry Reservoir. Absolutely love that place, and catching some pretty good walleye's out of there these days. But anyway, the Canyon Ferry Walleye Festival is coming out. Now they have made a very interesting change to their tournament. In fact, one that I was kind of hoping one of these tournaments would do one of these days. Because a lot of you talk about this topic we're gonna discuss. I'll give you a little hint. We're talking about forward-facing sonar and how some of you don't like it so much in the tourneys. Well, get ready, because this is gonna be interesting. Big change to that. That's next.

SPEAKER_00

SPEAKER_01

Thank you, Roger. And can't wait to talk about this next topic. But before we do, I want to introduce a couple groups that uh watch this podcast on a very regular basis. And I gotta say, we're honored to have these two groups uh watch us all the time. One group right now uh is doing some major heavy lifting and some dangerous heavy lifting out there right now. That is our active military. Uh so many of you watch this podcast from bases all around the world, from from even ships out at sea, and uh even some of you uh on some of the longer, shall we say, uh bombing runs, if you will, where you're you're in the plane for a long time and and have recorded it and listened to us that way too. And either way, we are just so honored that that you take the time out of your incredibly intense and busy schedules to join us here. And I hope this podcast brings a little home back to you. And we just want you to know we're thinking of you, we're praying for you, and we miss you. Get home soon. Also, want to welcome in another group that's with us all the time, and that is veterans from all across the great state of Montana and really around the world as well, including my daughter, who's a veteran. Thank you, and and welcome. And we just want you to know we'll never forget what you've done for our country. So thank you for listening, and again, enjoy, and I hope this brings some happiness to your life as well. Now, let's get into this podcast, and this is gonna be interesting. With me today is Eve. She is Eve Parrow, and she is with Montana Walleyes Unlimited. And Eve is gonna talk to us a bit about the Canyon Ferry Walleye Festival, a great tournament. A lot of you that watch this podcast have participated in that tournament, and that Eve, welcome to the Montana Outdoor Podcast. Thank you so much for jumping in there and coming on here today.

SPEAKER_02

Thank you. Thank you for having me.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Now, Eve, um, let's let's go over some of the basics. First, tell us a little bit about yourself, uh, what you do for Montana Walleyes Unlimited, and what you do when you're not doing that. Uh, and uh uh and then we'll get into the basics about the tournament, dates, times, all that, and then we're gonna get into this really interesting change. So, Eve, tell us a bit about yourself.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I am a member of the Gallatin chapter of the Montana Walleye's Unlimited. Um, both my husband is the current sitting president. I am the banquet director as well as chapter secretary. Um, it's been a great group. Um, this is our very first year of taking over the Canyon Ferry tournament.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So I am also the director for the Canyon Ferry Wildlife Festival. Um, our entire chapter is is hosting it, we can say, along with the Townsend Area Chamber of Commerce. Um, but yes, I have been designated the uh tournament director this year in a fair time.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's uh that's a big responsibility. Um what uh what caused you guys to to be the ones taking over the the tournament this year?

SPEAKER_02

Well, uh Chris McFadden, the owner of Townsend Marine there in Townsend. He has been the director for the last several years, and it was just time for him to step away and carry on with some of his other adventures in life. And we really didn't want to see this tournament go by the wayside. We didn't we wanted to see it stay alive, and um, you know, it's been an integral part of our family's history, the area's history, and it's something that we just wanted to make sure continue to um exist.

SPEAKER_01

Well, and for for those of you that are longtime viewers and listeners of the Montana Outdoor Podcast, uh, that Chris McFadden, you're probably recognizing that name. He's been on this podcast several times. Uh, one in that he's given some great advice over the the years on uh uh how to how to pick the right boat for you, and has really given us some wonderful advice. And of course, Townsend Marine has been just an awesome supporter of so many different things like that. And then also Chris just happens to win a few of these tournaments, all but them anymore.

SPEAKER_02

I thought the fisherman.

SPEAKER_01

He and Brim Phipps have uh they've been on a roll here.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we actually just had the two of them down and hosted um uh a seminar um just about some of us board-facing sonar and some of the the tricks that he and Brim use and some of their, you know, just some of their intel and information that they have because they are definitely their top dogs right now for sure.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, they sure are. Uh I would love to be able to catch walleye like they do. We all will. I think uh a lot of you if if you're like me and you see them out on the lake, you tend to kind of just follow along. Yeah. Uh anyway, let's talk a bit about the basics of the Canyon Ferry walleye tournament as far as uh dates, times, all all the good stuff that folks need to know. Uh can can people still enter the tournament?

SPEAKER_02

Absolutely. You can even show up the day of and still sign up. So we the more the merrier.

SPEAKER_01

All right. Uh and the date for the tournament is is June 26th and 27th.

SPEAKER_02

The rules meeting will be held Thursday night, the 25th. Um, you must be present for that rules meeting. So it's a Friday, Saturday tournament again. Um one thing to mention is you you must be a member in good standing with Montana Walleyes Unlimited. Um that's a it's a $50 annual family membership fee. So it's super easy to sign that up and and be a part of that um great group. So okay.

SPEAKER_01

Well, yeah, and so uh if if you haven't got around to entering, do it now. Uh in fact, if you go to the uh podcast description, a lot of you watch on YouTube, some of you on Apple Podcasts, or there's 25 other sites you can go to. Uh, but uh if you look just kind of down below where where Uzi Uzi is kind of located where the the the play button is or that, but you'll see this word the word more, which you know allows you to expand it. When you expand it, then you're gonna uh see a little article about this podcast, but you'll see all these different links, and in there is gonna be a link that will allow you to just click that and and go to get more information and and all that. And they can they can enter online, can't they?

SPEAKER_02

Uh yes, yep, you can enter online.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, perfect. And as far as any other things before we get into this big change, I just want to make sure we got everything in there. Okay, we talked about the uh the rules meeting. Do not forget that one, and that's at Silo's campground, correct?

SPEAKER_02

It is, yep, it's there at the main pavilion right there in Broadwater Bay, just across from the boat launch there, six o'clock.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. And then there are campsites there if you want to camp. I that's I don't know if they're gonna be full up yet or not.

SPEAKER_02

It's you know, we have that entire loop one reserve for the anglers starting Wednesday night. Um, so it's kind of a first come, first get. But you know, there's plenty, lots of camping spots throughout the the campground as well, too. So all right.

SPEAKER_01

So there you go. I would get on that right away. There is also when you go to that link there, there's also a a little uh QR code that you can scan to get where you want to go to. So a lot of ways to to find it. And in fact, Eve's phone number is on there too, if you've got questions or run into a snag there, and she can help you out with it. Now, you had mentioned forward-facing sonar, and you guys just uh addressed the elephant in the room and made a very interesting change. Talk about that. Correct.

SPEAKER_02

So yeah, you you hear the argument a lot that it's an unfair advantage, and and it's certainly um it it's a complicated tool, and so not everybody has mastered how to use it, and it's not um an inexpensive tool as well. So not everybody is in a position to be able to have that option on their votes. So one of the things that we thought in in order to try to create some larger participation is to create the social class. And what this is, is there is absolutely no use of the forward-facing seminar in the social class.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

So, um, and on top of that, the entry is half as much. So we're trying to encourage um some of the the locals or some of the people who may have gotten out of the game, or the grandpas who want to take their grandkids fishing, or the dads with the kids, or you know, just kind of open it up and and make sure that people are having equal opportunity to get out and participate in this awesome tournament. Because it really is, it's a ton of fun. You know, we start the day off at the national anthem, and you know, it's just it's a great group of people. The camaraderie is is really top-notch, and we just want to see all levels of participation being back in there. And that's why we just figured, you know, we'll give it a try, we'll see how it works this year, and and maybe we can pull in some more of those um everyday fishermen that just want to get back out there on the water.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Yeah. I I just love this idea because it it really does, as I said, kind of just flat address the the uh the elephant in the room because a lot of people have said, no, I'm I'm just not gonna I'm not gonna enter anymore. And this allows you guys to now, you know, kind of apples to apples. Um correct, yeah, exactly. And so I I I think this is just a great idea. And it I I really think for for those of you that have said, gee, I I love tournaments, but I'm just not gonna do it. Well, now here's your chance. This is a great thing. And and I think the more of you that that instead of just not entering the tournament, the more of you that actually enter the tournament and do this, I think that can send a message to a lot of other tournaments around the state that may then start creating this this kind of uh uh alternative as well. Don't you think more people will do that?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I think you know the challenge is just getting the word out there. And I think that as we we all start to play with this and and spread the word and hopefully we can start reaching a new audience again and getting people that are no longer participating, participating again, or maybe those that have been hesitant to get in the game to to jump on board and and give it a try. So if we're we're anxious to see how it goes and and as it continues to grow, that helps, you know, with sponsorships, that helps, you know, bring in added prize money as more people are showing interest and participation in this other in this other class.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. We're gonna take just a quick break, and when we come back, we're gonna talk a bit about how the prize money works for the new social class as well as the regular tournament class. We'll talk about how how you're gonna police this idea and a few other things. So don't go away, we'll be right back after this. There would not be a podcast if it weren't for the support of great Montana-owned companies like Rocky Mountain Truck and Trailer. So if you enjoy any of these podcasts and you happen to need a new trailer for work or hauling things on your next adventure, why not go see the folks that support what you like to do? For example, you can find right now at Rocky Mountain Truck and Trailer something that all folks who love Montana's outdoors can always appreciate, and that is top-tier toughness. Yeah, it's what we need here in Montana's Great Outdoors. Whether we're on the job site or the open road, headed for our favorite fishing spot. Here's what I want you to do right now. Or go see them at rmtte.com. Rocky Mountain Truck and Trailer, your work hard and play hard headquarters at rmtte.com. Back here on the Montana Outdoor Podcast, and we have Eve Peryl. She is from Montana Wild Eyes Unlimited. That is the Gallatin chapter. I just love the fact that you were able to kind of drop everything uh here today and and jump in here and do this. We talked a bit about um the new class in the tournament that you are doing, where you're gonna have just the the normal tournament. That's the uh, what is it, $420 to enter. You can use all your technology, all the stuff, and do it just like everybody does. Let's talk about that division first. Sorry, no. Sorry, and friends. It won't be long. My dog will be probably crawling up here somewhere. Yeah, um good thing he didn't see the cat. So in the normal class, um you've got a few different divisions, right? You've got your just your open division, then mixed couple, talking a little bit about the now. This is the class we're what we're talking about, folks, is for anyone that has any kind of technology.

SPEAKER_02

Yep, yep. So this is all inclusive. Um we're referring it to as what we call the tournament class. So it's been pretty standard of what's been across the board in years past. So within that, you have your um just your standard division, then you have mixed couple, and then you have adult child.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

And I will say this year, the adult child, the child portion of that entry fee is being sponsored by Townsend Marine. So again, that's um another benefit to to get those kiddos out there, and that's 17 and under. Anybody 17 and under will call into that adult child.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so is so is that one adult and one child then? Is that how that works?

SPEAKER_02

Yep, correct.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. Uh, and then you've got uh all the side pots that people can get in.

SPEAKER_02

All the side pots are already included in that entry fee. So you're automatically entered into those.

SPEAKER_01

Awesome.

SPEAKER_02

So for the one thing that's in addition, and this is gonna go for both classes, is that we're gonna have like a daily shootout. So um you you pay into the pot, and it's gonna be a head-to-head shootout. So random draw, you go against one other angler for that day, and then that that all the money raised in that pot goes to that head-to-head competition. So that's cool. A little pun thing on top of it, different, different draws each day. So um just another added fun thing to do.

SPEAKER_01

So is that is that an added thing you got to add extra to get into that? Correct. Yeah, yeah, that's optional. So okay. And and do you just is it just uh two different teams that do that? That's it then.

SPEAKER_02

Yep.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so you you get drawn, and if you get drawn, you then they draw who's gonna be your competitor, and you're just going for competing. Well, of course, you're competing in still in the tournament, but also you're going head to head with that. That's gonna be fun.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. Something, you know, in addition to everything else going on. So okay.

SPEAKER_01

And so folks will uh what leave about 7 a.m. then uh till four?

SPEAKER_02

This is where we're gonna have a few different little difference, I guess, set of rule for the two different classes. So the tournament class will it'll be um single file start at 7 a.m. And then they are back off the water by 4 p.m. The source class will leave at 7 30 in the morning, and then they're back off the water at 2 30. That way, if somebody has, let's say not a 400 on the back of their motor and they've got a pontoon or just a a smaller boat, they're not getting um caught up in the big fishing boats. It's safety. Plus, it's a little shorter day, so if you do have some of those kiddos out there or people who aren't quite as inclined to that many hours on the water, it it kind of gets them off the water and and out of the way. Um so they're not getting kind of caught up in the the shuffle.

SPEAKER_01

And and looking at the uh the poster that I pulled offline, it says 7.30 to 2. So is that wrong? Is it 7 30 to 2?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, it is I'm sorry, 7 30 to 2. Yes, yes, you are correct. Yep. 7 30 to 2. And then 7 to 4 for the tournament class.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. And uh that's two anglers, but you can have more in the boat if you want.

SPEAKER_02

You can have up to five people in the boat, but only two anglers that are so two, only two fishing. But if you've got mom and dad and three kids and you want to get out there, or dad's got a couple of kids and they both want to go out, or that way we're kind of opening it up so people aren't restricted. Or if you've got dad and grandpa and a kid, you know, we we want to be able to kind of have that opportunity where if you need more people in the boat, you can have more than two in the boat. Okay, excellent.

SPEAKER_01

Now, in this new social class, um that's it's ha it's $200 to enter, correct? Correct. And um now, so what about side pots?

SPEAKER_02

That's not included then no, there's no side pots for for the social class. So this is our first year, we're we're also getting our feet wet and learning, and and as this continues to grow, then we can get the feedback from the anglers and and see, you know, what their interests are, what we can do better next year. But this year, no, there's there's no side pot, so it's just straight entry fee tournament you're you're going head not head to head but you're going against like everybody else in that class.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. Uh is there is there different divisions for that class or is it everything's the same there?

SPEAKER_02

Everything's the same on that one.

SPEAKER_01

Very good.

SPEAKER_02

We're trying to encourage any and all to to participate.

SPEAKER_01

I love it. I love it. Okay. Now uh I I'm I can hear some of my uh viewers and listeners out there uh since I've been doing this for a while I always kind of know okay I'm probably gonna get an email about this or that how are you gonna police the no forward fishing no forward facing sonar thing how is it uh just an honor system or do they need to throw something it's typically an honor system.

SPEAKER_02

I mean like every tournament um in the mornings yeah you have your standard boat check where you can carry your way card your ruler you check your line wells um it it is gonna be an honor system and and I feel like that we can trust people to do that and you know if you're that guy then I feel sorry for you if you feel like you got to cheat in a social class. But yeah no it really um most people won't even have it in their boats with V I guess because if you have it you're probably gonna be using it and you'll be in the tournament class.

SPEAKER_01

So right if if you if you do have it uh maybe you're borrowing somebody else's boat or whatever probably be a real smart idea to just you know disconnect stuff.

SPEAKER_02

Exactly exactly and and we'll have that chat at the rules meeting if if you have it in a shuttle and you can pull it out of the boat that's what we're gonna encourage is to not have it in the boat. If you can disconnect it I mean a lot of those things are pretty easy to connect to connect. And and honestly if we see somebody who's got the the downscope in their boat we're gonna have a question. We're gonna have to question that because you don't you don't have a need for that if you're in a social class. So that can that can come out of the boat for sure.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah so that that's a pretty easy one now can they use other technology oh absolutely they can use their their fish finders and all of that it's just simply no forward facing sonar. Okay okay so yeah so that allows us to to use a lot of the things that we've had in our boats for years and years.

SPEAKER_02

These fish finders out there now are are something else even without without the forward facing sonar so great tools out there that absolutely use up use it away.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm yeah and uh the way I I like to call them are the the the the electronics that we all know how to use because you put a forward facing thing in front of me and I go uh I don't know what to do there.

SPEAKER_02

I didn't happen to start watching the screen and forget to fish.

SPEAKER_01

Right. I I love to fish with someone who knows how to work it because it's it's pretty cool and it's not pretty cool. But yeah if you if you told me to work it I I probably would ruin it. I unless I had my grandson in there and then he could fix it for me.

SPEAKER_02

I mean exactly yeah but anyway so those are your two classes as far as I know this has never been done in Montana has it they they tried it up at Tiber um just a few weeks ago they tried it um it didn't really get the publicity that it needed they had a couple other caveats of you couldn't have been in a in a walleye tournament in the last three years. We did away with that we want anyone you mean because that could be the Rotten Dun Club tournament or anything. So we're just simply leaving that as no forward facing sonar. That's the only restriction. Okay I I think people are really gonna like this a lot I think Canyon Ferry is the perfect um opportunity to test this out because there's there's a lot of um you know your everyday average fishermen that are out there that would like to participate and and it's close to so many different I mean it's it's easily accessible, easy for people to get to whether you're from Townsend, Bozeman, Helena, Billing you know all of it. So it's you know come it's easy to get to great boat watch. You know we got four wide in the morning. Um so yeah we really are hoping that people will take advantage of this opportunity and we can help grow this and learn from it and and grow with the other tournaments in the circuit as well so okay one more quick break when we come back we'll wrap it up with uh Eve Parrow and then let her get on our way so we'll be back right after this.

SPEAKER_01

Over the years you've heard me talk a lot about superior hardwoods of Montana. Yeah I've talked a great deal about their incredible reclaimed wood from old barns, green elevators, old homesteads even an old log flume zigzagging down a mountainside in Montana. If there's an amazing piece of wood that can be reclaimed and turned into an unbelievable one of a kind wood floor, paneling or well just about anything, Superior Hardwoods of Montana has found it, created it, and showed all of us right there online at superior dash hardwoods dot com. They truly are artists that just happen to use wood as their canvas. And yes I've also talked about their amazing ability to find some of the most unbelievable exotic woods from all over the world. I was asked the other day if Superior Hardwoods of Montana ever just sold normal wood floors or paneling or do they only sell wood products that are incredible and unusual. I had to stop and think about that question for a minute. No not because I could not think of a case where Superior Hardwoods of Montana sold just some usual nice looking flooring or paneling. They do that a lot. I had to think about it because the folks at Superior Hardwoods of Montana make really any piece of wood incredible and unusual simply because you will not find any let me say it again you will not find any place on earth that cares more about what they sell than superior hardwoods of Montana. I guess that's why they've been in business since 1977. It's a a passion of everyone at Superior Hardwoods of Montana I know that because I've known these folks for well most of the 65 years that I've been around. So believe me when I say at Superior Hardwoods of Montana they absolutely cannot wait to guide you through the woods. Go see them next time you're in Missoula or why not go see them right now at superior dash hardwoods dot com. Superior Hardwoods of Montana go see them back here on the Montana Outdoor podcast Eve is with me and we are talking about the Canyon Ferry Wildlife Festival that's June 26th and 27th the we just got done talking about the new social class. I love it. I think this is going to be really interesting can't wait to find out of course you can follow along for day one results and then the final results on Montanaoutdoor.com we always post those so be sure and do that. Also in the article I've got the on montanaoutdoor com the poster for the Canyon Ferry walleye festival so all that info's right there too for you to look at but uh if you're on one of those sites that doesn't have the podcast description otherwise go to that click on it boom you can do that also on the screen right now is the walleyesunlimited dot net slash tournaments slash Montana dash um circuit so there you go and so for the for the social class um we're gonna have people sign up directly with me so thankfully message me on messenger eve paro on Facebook or you can email me directly at eveparrow at gmail dot com and I'll be handling all of that or you can certainly there are on that flyer as well is our GM walleye's uh email as well.

SPEAKER_02

So I'll be watching for all of those entries coming my way you can text me call me whatever you need to do my phone number is on that flyer as well.

SPEAKER_01

Okay great in fact when you look at the flyer that little gray box you can see the email address and I've got that email address up there too uh right now on the screen and we've got the phone number. So there you go. That uh allows you folks to uh get involved in the social class have a lot of fun take the family on the boat all that or if you're one of what we call the big sticks out there and really want to go for it.
