Too Hot to Fish the Rivers? It Doesn't Have to be That Way.

This week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger Dale goes on the hunt to find some alternatives for anglers, especially you flyfishing anglers that have had to cancel your fishing plans due to high river water temperatures that have prompted Hoot Owl Restrictions and in many cases river fishing closures. We knew that Hebgen Lake down that way often has some excellent flyfishing for awesome trout and sure enough Garrett said that the fish in the lake are doing what they call “the Gulp” right now. He said there is all kinds of hatches happening, calabasas, caddis, mayflies, hoppers etc. So, there is lots of things going on in the lake and there are no fishing restrictions!” So that is great news for flyfishing anglers that want to head that way”. Well, folks, we are in what they call the dog days of summer, and yeah, it is hot out there. And I've been getting emails and and things from you of uh saying, hey, a lot of these rivers are are closing altogether or a lot of hoodle restrictions. Um welcome to uh Montana in the late Jen July and August. That can happen, but that doesn't mean fishing is completely gone. You're just gonna kind of have to adjust. Now, for you fly fishermen, uh that makes it a little more challenging, but uh fear not. I've got a guy here that uh might be able to help us. Our friend Garrett Osler will be with us, and he's gonna see if he can find you a good spot to uh wet a line and get a fly going here. We'll do that next. Well, popped up on the screen there is our good friend Garrett Osler. If you listen to the Montana Outdoor Radio show, you hear him there often as well. Plus, uh he comes on here. In fact, um uh a ton of you, I mean thousands and thousands of you watched uh his ice fishing episode for a while there, Garrett. That was one of our uh most watched uh podcasts anywhere. People really like that. Uh, but now we're in we're in completely the opposite, aren't we? We're in the hot weather. Uh, I guess let's start with uh something you told me when we were getting ready here. You were down in Yellowstone Park yesterday, um, and you heard they might have to shut some fishing down there. Was it what did I hear that right?

They are talking about even further restrictions as these temperatures stay warm. The fish are behaving differently in uh even Yellowstone Lake, which that's a huge place, very deep, very cool. But the surface temperatures were about 64, 65 degrees, and the guides were complaining that the fish were a little sluggish. The ones we did catch were very healthy, full of shrimp, and we had a great time. Now we talk about the at the gate, they'll tell you that the Madison River and all the drainages from the Madison River upstream in the lake are closed aren't because of the I think they call it wrong, they call it who now. I think they ought to call it spotted hell because spots are closed and some spots aren't.

Spotted hell, yeah, that's a good one. Well, that's true, and that that can get a little complicated. Uh, and that's where I I think folks uh sometimes get confused. In fact, last night you were heading home, you were saying and and some people were fishing where they shouldn't have been. Didn't know though.

Yeah. Yeah, it's a little confusing because it's right on the border of the park. It's in between uh the highway and Kepkin Lake. And they were locals and they were down there fishing, and I stopped by and uh informed them, you see something, you say something, sure. And uh when you're approaching fishermen and you're telling them they can't fish, you better have your bear spray close by. They might get a little contagious, but they were very cooperative, and most people that I visited with will just say, Oh, I didn't know things for let me know where can I find this information out? And so I go to the uh WP website and you can see the current conditions. I sure wish that in all this KI world and everything that we live with GLF fin seating and stuff, you could just pull up the app. It would know where you are and tell you whether the conditions for that region were or that specific river that you're standing next to.

Yeah, it's not yeah, yeah. I think we'll get there, but yeah, that that kind of stuff would help. In the podcast description for you folks watching right now, um I'll put a link in there that'll take you to that FWP site, and they do keep that very current, so you should be able to find what you're doing. So, best bet is just you know, look up where you're gonna go before you head out so you don't waste a bunch of time, and and then find out. Of course, hoodow means from uh 2 p.m. to midnight, you you can't fish. Uh, but uh it's gone beyond hoodow in a lot of places where it's just flat closed. Now, over in West Yellowstone where you're at, um, fortunately, you got a lot of good fishing around there. I mean, a lot of good fishing. Um, yeah, where might uh if a fly fisherman just wanted to find a place that that they know is no restrictions, and I just want to catch a few trout, where would you send them, do you think, Garrett?

Right now, I would suggest that you spend some time at Hebgen Lake. If you've got the ability to float around, the fish are doing what they call the gulp right now. There's all kinds of calabatus, mayflies, cattle flies, hoppers are jumping in the lake. So there's a lot of things going on in the lake that you can see if you can see fish spot them, stomp them, and hook them and let them go quickly. Still really warm there, and they're up in shallows. So there's not very much dissolved oxygen, and that's what they say the problem is. So you gotta get those things back in the water real quick or decide to keep them. Right. Okay. You know, keeping a fish is not the worst thing in the world you can do.

Yeah, yeah, you know, they do taste good. Uh they do taste good. What kind of trout do do do you have there in Hebgen that people could go after?

We have brown trout, rainbows, cutbows, west slope cutthroat. There are some graining in Hebgen that they put in. Haven't seen any, but they're there. And then we have, of course, white fish and the infamous chubs. Chubs are cooperating very well in the marinas. If you just want to catch fish, there's chubs in the marinas 12 to 14 inches long. Nice. And it's nice to get them out of the pond. If you release them, make sure they go into a bucket with your yeah, the old uh Utah chub. Um the other other places close by is below Hebgen. Now Hebgen is really cool. We've been blessed with a lot of water here.

So below fishing. Below Hebgen Lake, then. Um, as far as if if somebody just wanted to go catch some trout and not have to worry about restrictions and that, uh, would would you would Hebgen be the the go-to, you think?

Hebgen is open, wide open to bait, to fly fishing, trolling. It's just in the dog bays of summer. Yeah, like cold water. So you have to use your good electronics or your knowledge to find now.

I do not. Okay. Yeah, you get a little bit of a I am already looking for ice.

You already hope the ice will get that. Yeah. Well come too soon. I'll tell you, this man here, if you want to go ice fishing, this is the guy, because uh uh he is that is probably some of the best ice fishing you're ever gonna have, and you get to fish a long time uh um there on Hibgen uh, you know, when you're ice fishing. Uh tell us a little bit about what's going on right now in West Yellowstone. Uh that is just one of my favorite places in this great state, and there are so many great places, but uh West Yellowstone's a unique one, and I think some people, you know, you don't think about it, you think, oh, I gotta go to the park. Actually, that the park's right there, but there's lots of stuff going on. Talk about that, and and uh of course, you you have a hotel there in West Yellowstone, right?

Yeah, I operate the uh Madison Hotel, which happens to be the oldest hotel in West Yellowstone. So it's real historic. You can see by the wood log construction, it's much like the old St. Helena. I in town here this week we have a mountain man rendezvous. That's here in town. They actually have on I think it's Friday and Saturday or Saturday, Sunday, they have a PRCA bull riding event. Oh wow. Yeah, so that's happening here. We have the bear wolf disability center. It's always wonderful to see. Whether you're an adult or a child, and you get a two-day admission to do that. Of course, going to the park, but west of the park is Island Park, there's ADBs, UT fishing, there is limitless as what you can do. And uh of course, Hebkin is always my main interest, but the things to do in West Yellowstone is just get out and go.

Wow, okay. So, you know, folks, that this is just a great place to go. Um, it it's easy to get to. Uh, and uh the thing I love about West Yellowstone is it's so friendly. Everybody there is happy to see you. They're you know, uh, you can dang near ask anybody there, hey, what where can I find this or that? Everybody knows what's going on, just like Garrett here. And uh it's good folks. Um good folks. That that wolf and and bear discovery center. Um, I think a lot of people, in fact, I didn't for years I didn't know that existed there. Uh, I mean, they they actually have live bears and wolves right there in the, you know, kind of in their own little setting, right?

Yeah, they have a wolf section where they've got uh wolves and they'll bring them in and hide them for enrichment purposes. They do that with the bears. And the bears are actually how bears that were getting into cabins or trailers or stuff like that, that they were able to bring in and adapt to this in enclosure line.

So it's kind of like bear jail a little bit, huh?

A little bit, yeah, but they don't let them have a good behavior. Yeah, they're there for for the duration, but at least being used in it. They use them. These bears, they they put food out and they come in and they find the food. The most interesting thing is is they do all the testing for all these bear-proof containers over there. Oh, good. That's really interesting. I didn't know. Most bears still put stuff in them and they can get into almost anything. But they have a great time. They have slaughters, but you can just spend hours and hours over there enjoying them.

Okay. Well, um that that's that that's just a great side trip, especially for you diehard fishermen that oh, I gotta be on the water, but you got the kids and and mom, uh, what a great thing for them to do too. So um, I I encourage people to go do that. And and you were saying if people want to, you know, rent a like an ATV and and get out and explore further, they they do rent all that kind of like in the winter they rent snowmobiles, don't they?

Right. Yeah. Most most of the same shops, they have Polaris, Kidneys, and here in town, Yellowstone Adventure, and you can go on hundreds and hundreds of miles trails outside into the hobo or up towards Big Sky. Mm-hmm. And write 'em until your butt hurts.

We're kind of lightly attended. July and August have been off a little bit. So there There is a push every day that comes from Idaho. People staying down in Idaho's phones and stuff because they think it's cheaper. But then they spend two and a half to five hours on the road just getting to the park. Yeah, it's not cheaper. Instead of just staying here where you're five minutes. Right. So there's some things that can be there, but we have openings. Uh most hotels have openings if you want to come up for some two-day stays. There's some deals that can be had. But uh there's always rooms available here in West.

Okay, let's Take a peek at the FWP homepage, and I'm going to show you how to real quickly get to where those restrictions are. So you know, okay, I'm going to this this river or that river, what's going on there. Always best to check this area before you go out this time of year, because with all this hot weather, lots of restrictions. And I mean lots of restrictions on rivers all across the state. So let me pull up uh the FWP homepage and I'll show you real quick how to go there. So let's take a look at the home page. I'll bring it up right now. There we go. There's your homepage. That's the good old fwp.mt.gov. So where do we find it? Restrictions and closures right there. Boom, hit that bad boy. Now that's gonna pull up a map. Um if you want to mess with the map, I I don't uh because I'd rather just see the list of the rivers and all that. But if you know if you want to monkey around in here and find all that, you can enlarge it and do all that. Here's a quick way to do it. Just scroll down. Fishing and water bodies right there. Current restrictions. There it is. And there's pretty much every river in the state. At least those are the ones that have restrictions right now. So you can look at any one. Let's uh, for example, take a look at the Bitteret River. That shows you Hudao restrictions, prohibits angling from 2 p.m. to midnight. They are in effect for the Bitteret River in its entirety, from the confluence of the East and West Forks to the confluence with the Clark Fork River. That started July 22nd. So there it all is. You can go through it, see what the temperatures were, and so on. Uh, but you can go to any river you want and do that. Real simple. Now let's show you how to do the same thing on your mobile, which is probably gonna be something you use the most. So uh let me pull up my iPhone for you, just so you can take a look at that. Okay, there's my iPhone. Right now I'm on the main page. So let's uh as you can see, here it is. Good old fwp.mt.gov. So now let's scroll down because it's not gonna be at the top where it was before. There we go. Current restrictions. Boom. There it is. Now there's that map again. Um you can mess around with that if you want, as I said before, but real easy. Fishing and water bodies, current restrictions. There they are. Going down. Now let's take a look at uh Clark Fork River. And there's some different uh U Dow restrictions, things like that. So there you go. Real easy to do on the mobile as well. So if you have questions, you can always shoot me an email. Now, I want to show you something I think is kind of cool, especially for this time of year when it gets really hot. What you're looking at there is my iPhone. So I want to show you a cool way to find some mountain lakes. Mountain lakes are a great way to beat the heat. You get hike away up there, but boy, it's nice and cool up there higher. Also, you're gonna see some really beautiful country, and you are going to fish in some lakes that probably don't get fished much. So let me show you what we got here. So now let's let's look here. Here we are on the home page, okay? So I'm gonna hit, and this is you know, obviously via mobile. I'm gonna hit fish right up there. Okay. Now, what we're gonna do is we're gonna scroll down here ways, and you gotta, and this is why I think a lot of people miss this, is they don't realize where this is this is at. So we're getting down towards the bottom of the page here now. See there? Mountain lakes. So let's look at these mountain lakes here in the Dillon area, and this is a PDF, it's a report, but you can see Dillon Area Mountain Lakes Guide. This is the Ruby Beaverhead Red Rock River drainages. And as you scroll through here, now we're gonna see some different areas. Like here's the Centennial Range. Now, these are all individual lakes, and I will zoom in here a bit for you. Like here is Blair Lake, also the hell roaring lakes. We've got Brennan Lake, and so on here. Here's Charles Lake, Elk Lake, and so on. But when you look, you can see what might be in those lakes. Like, for example, here in Lillian Lake says no fish caught, so they don't know what's what might be in there or not. But as we go up to like Odell Lake, here it shows that Wisconsin cutthroat trout and West Slope Cutthroat Trout. No fish caught in that one. If we go to the beaverhead mountains and we do a little snooping around in there, we see, for example, Dad Creek Lake, West Slope Cutthroat Trout, Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout. Anyway, if you just do some noodling and some research, you're gonna be able to see what's all in these mountain lakes and where they're at. Of course, it's gonna show you, for example, here, stocking data on Morrison Lake, Chinook salmon, coho salmon, cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, west slope trout, chinook salmon, obey dane. I didn't even know they stocked those. Now that was back in 1928. Probably didn't breed or anything, but here's some more recent stuff. West Westlope Cutthroat Trout back in 2018 were planted in there, 2,500 of them, and so on. So pretty cool stuff. You're gonna be able to look at these reports and see where stuff was, what was in there, and then it's gonna show you location data, the the whole thing. So if you want to go find those, you can use your GPS and just enter in the lat long and boom, off you go. So this is kind of a neat deal, and it it really gives you some great ways of finding some of these mountain lakes, which can be some real treasures. So just an idea for you. Again, the way you find that real quick here is we go, we started at the we pushed fish. See how we're on fish right now. We scrolled way down to the bottom of the page, towards the bottom of the page, and then there's like your flathead lake fishing guide, mountain lakes. There's the Abzorka and Beartooth, Crazy Mountain Lakes, Dillon area lakes, mountain lakes in the Gallatin and Madison drainages, the pond guide over in Glasgow. So these would be some good places to take a look and you know get out of the heat and find some really cool stuff. So, just another idea for you. And I hope that helps. Well, there you have it, my friends. I hope this was helpful to you. I hope this will help beat the heat and help you find the fish that you're looking for and not have to deal with the restrictions on some of the more popular rivers than that. And fear not, that's all gonna calm down as well. It'll start to cool down again. Like anything else, this is just summer in Montana. Sometimes it gets real hot. So, yeah, let's deal with it. Let's go out and have some fun and find some cool places, maybe that you've never fished before. It's a good time to do it when you're not sure.
