The Diabetic Epidemic: How Big Sugar Manipulated Science for 50 Years

Steven Killfoil Season 3 Episode 16

For Questions or Comments Send us a Text Message

Shocking revelations about our food system take center stage as we uncover the troubling connection between a single corrupted scientific study and America's diabetes epidemic. Buried in Harvard University archives for 51 years, documents reveal how Big Sugar paid prominent scientists $61,000 in today's money to shift blame from sugar to saturated fat—derailing nutritional science for half a century and potentially contributing to 158 million deaths worldwide.

We cut through media hysteria surrounding avian flu and egg prices, sharing Consumer Reports' findings that properly handled and cooked eggs remain perfectly safe. Despite headlines suggesting dangerous shortages, we found eggs readily available at reasonable prices, contradicting the narrative being pushed by mainstream sources.

The conversation shifts to brain health as we explore Stefan McDermott's groundbreaking book "Achieve Optimal Brain Health with Nutrition." Drawing on personal experience, we discuss how dietary changes transformed our health and cognitive function. The Mediterranean diet, omega-3 fatty acids, and elimination of inflammatory foods emerge as powerful tools against everything from brain fog to menopausal symptoms. We share a fascinating analogy: just as oil fixes a squeaky door, healthy fats repair brain function.

Perhaps most disturbing is our revelation about American versus European food standards. Many ingredients freely permitted in American products are banned across Europe—explaining why Americans often lose weight eating abroad despite consuming pasta, bread, and sugar. This stark contrast raises serious questions about our regulatory system and its impact on our national health crisis.

Join us next week when District 6 Little Elm Councilman Andrew Evans visits the studio to address community concerns. Steven Killfoil:

Good morning Cross Roads. On the show today we will be discussing some unsettling news that was revealed in an article from Bottom Line Health, breakthrough 2025 Breakthrough and 2025, debunked some of the liberal media's reporting of the egg dilemma.

Steven Killfoil:

Before we start, I want to give you a little disclaimer first. Maddie and I are not doctors or nurses. We do not diagnose or treat patients. Anything we share on this podcast is for educational purposes only and does not substitute for professional medical advice. We advise listeners to consult a medical professional or healthcare provider if they need medical advice, diagnoses or treatment.

Steven Killfoil:

So let's talk turkey. Or should I say chicken, chicken eggs, to be specific, the way the liberal media reports it, it's that bird flu is so bad that so many birds had to be specific. The way the liberal media reports it, it's that bird flu is so bad that so many birds had to be put down that there is an egg shortage and this is why they're so expensive. They put a spin on it and try to blame President Trump for this. It was actually Sleepy Joe who ordered, via Obama Mama to destroy the birds, not Donald Trump. Well, just two days ago we bought a bunch of eggs in preparation for Easter to die. Maddie did a magnificent job. Go to our Facebook page and you will see them. Awesome job, awesome job. But I bought those eggs just two days ago from Costco 18. That's a dozen and a half for, oh, $5 and 79 cents. It seems like the egg prices are heading down, not up. So here's exactly what Consumer Reports has to say about eggs. Here we go. Are eggs safe right now? What to know about food and the avian flu? Like I said, the media is really hyped up and playing and spinning all kinds of BS like they normally do. So here I want to put your mind at ease.

Steven Killfoil:

The bird flu, or highly pathogenic avian influenza, has been in the news a lot in recent months, but that's because there's an outbreak of the virus in birds in the US. It has spread from wild birds to domestic birds like chickens Raised on farms and some cattle and cats, and made a small number of people sick too. That has led to the culling of more than 166 million chickens. Boy, that's a lot. Well, this may have you worried that eggs, as well as poultry, beef and milk, may be contaminated with the virus and make you sick when you eat them.

Steven Killfoil:

Consumer Reports experts have advice. So far there is no indication that people can catch bird flu from poultry, eggs or dairy directly. But proper handling and cooking is important, just as it is to protect against bacteria like salmonella, says james e rogers, phd, director of the head of safety testing at consumer reports. Eggs should be cooked to 160 degrees fahrenheit and dishes that contain them to 165 degrees Fahrenheit, so the egg is completely solid. Rogers says you will also want to avoid raw milk products because they're not pasteurized. Heat treated to kill viruses and bacteria and cook meat and poultry to the temperatures recommended by the FDA. For specifics, go to foodsafetygov. Forward slash food dash safety dash charts. Additionally, says Rogers, wash your hands well before and after food preparation and clean your prep area and tools, like utensils and cutting boards, with warm soapy water.

Steven Killfoil:

Overall, your risk of catching avian flu is very low in the us, unlike the liberal media would like us to believe. Oh, we're gonna be wearing masks. Oh, we're gonna have to distance ourselves. Oh, my god, bullshit. The liberal media is full of cow poo. Yes, that's right. So Consumer Reports said it, so you can pretty much take it to the bank, and I do. I subscribe to the magazine. It's an excellent, excellent magazine. I actually had a high school teacher who taught social economics and he introduced us to the magazine back in my sophomore year of high school. I've been reading it ever since. So those of you out there if you want to find out the kibosh on a lot of stuff, subscribe to Consumer Reports. It's a worthwhile magazine to invest in, definitely, definitely. Well, that's what Consumer Reports has to say about eggs. What do you think, maddie? I think the media needs to have a little bit egg on their face. What do you think, Mady? I think the media needs to have a little bit egg on their face. What do you think?

Mady Killfoil:

First, good morning. Yes, I think that they are full of poppycock and they are just trying to destabilize everything that the new administration is doing good. The price of eggs is going down, the price of gas is going down, the inflation is down, people are happier and they are becoming more and more MAGA, and they just don't like it.

Steven Killfoil:

Yeah, well, the only ones that are whining and crying and wah-wah about it are those crazy Democrats who have purple hair and no morals.

Mady Killfoil:

Yeah, well, that's to be understood, yeah.

Mady Killfoil:

Yep, they are just. I think their brain is upside down.

Steven Killfoil:

Well, now here's another interesting article we came across from Bottom Line's Health Breakthrough 2025. It discussed how scientists triggered a diabetic epidemic. Renegade doctors discover smoking gun documents hidden in secret medical archives. Dear friend, have you ever wondered why so many people over 50 have diabetes? Me too, us too, yeah, after all. Not too long ago, type 2 diabetes was almost unheard of, but today one out of every three Americans suffer from the disease. Unheard of, but today one out of every three Americans suffer from the disease. However, if you ask most doctors why diabetes is so common, they'll simply shrug their shoulders and blame obesity, poor diet or genetics, poppycock. But a dusty box of 51-year-old documents buried in the archives of Harvard University has revealed a shocking fact.

Steven Killfoil:

The real culprit behind today's deadly diabetes epidemic is a single scientific study from 1967. Big Sugar's Deadly Deception. Let me explain. You see, in the early 60s, researchers were racing to discover why so many men were dropping dead from heart attacks. At the time, most scientific evidence pointed to sugar, not saturated fat or cholesterol, as the culprit. The sugar industry knew the facts about sugar and heart disease would sink sales and cost them billions, so they came up with a plan to protect their bottom line profits, a plan that would derail scientific progress for the next five decades. In 1965, the Sugar Research Foundation paid three top scientists $6,500, about $61,000 in today's money to prove sugar was harmless and point the blame to saturated fat. Instead, these scientists rung on the most respected nutrition experts in the world. One was actually a scientific advisor for the USDA.

Steven Killfoil:

Big Sugar ordered their scientific lapdogs to refute our detractors, and that's exactly what the so-called scientists did, using methods that could kindly be described as dishonest. Oh, is our government dishonest, hmm? For example, long-term human studies proving sugar hardened arteries were dismissed as being too dissimilar to real life. In reality, human trials are the gold standard of scientific proof. Another study proved eating less sugar and more veggies lowered heart attack risks, but it discounted because that dietary change is not feasible. Go figure, huh.

Steven Killfoil:

Yet another study showed heart disease skyrocketed when subjects ate a high-carb diet. The experts claim such diets are rarely consumed. Poppycock Crap everywhere you go in the damn grocery store, except for the produce aisles full of processed foods. Huh Well, the medical crime of the century happened in 1967. The trumped-up study was published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine. The author's expert status gave the study instant credibility. In fact, this single study disrupted scientific research for 50 years and the results were devastating. You see, thanks to this one study, well-meaning doctors push patients to adopt low-fat, high-carb diets diets many nutritionists now blame for america's obesity crisis.

Steven Killfoil:

The USDA urged Americans to trade butter for trans fat laden margarine. Today, most of us eat 30 pounds of these artery-clogging poisons every year. Healthy, low-fat foods loaded with hidden sugars exploded in popularity. No wonder US sugar consumption has tripled, along with big sugar's profits. The result Over the last four decades, type 2 diabetes has skyrocketed. In 1980, only about 1 in 50 Americans had a problem with blood sugar. Today it's 1 out of 3. By 2050, the number will rise to 1 out of 2. Those numbers are shocking, but the death toll from the diabetes epidemic is truly mind-boggling. You see, high blood sugar kills about 3.2 million people every single year. That's right, the 50 years million Over since that bought and paid for scientific study, that's a mind-boggling 158 million deaths more than the population of the United Kingdom, France, and Australia combined. That is disgusting, isn't it, Mady?

Mady Killfoil:

Oh yeah.

Steven Killfoil:

Oh brother.

Mady Killfoil:

Our government wants us sick and not healthy and not healthy. And since I came in this country, I felt I was getting poisoned through the food I didn't have, and you know this, I'm not lying. I didn't have the health issues that I have now developed after I started to, you know, living in this country. I married you and I started to eat the food from the stores. Right, I didn't have these health issues back home in Romania, because a lot of the things, bad things that are allowed here by the food industry are forbidden in Europe, and you know that, and every single American that's traveling overseas and they will go in any European country. They can eat everything they want, including pasta, flour, sugar, and not that they will not gain weight. They will lose weight. This is how different it is, and they will feel better, more energy, more focused. I mean, it's just insane.

Steven Killfoil:

Yeah, it's really sad. Well, Mady, I want to ask you what do you think about our new Crossroads? Author Stefan McDermott's new book Achieve Optimal Brain Health with Nutrition.

Mady Killfoil:

Well, I believe a lot of time and effort went into this book. As you know, we actually use many of his recipes that he put in his book. I have the changes we made in our diets to thank, as well as God for sure for you no longer experiencing the health problems you had before. So I think this is a great thing and a great improvement, a big change, and I recommend to anybody out there to get the book. It's not very expensive. Read it and apply it.

Steven Killfoil:

Absolutely. Well. I want to read a small section out of Chapter 11.2, the long-term benefits of a brain-healthy diet, from his book. The long-term benefits of a brain-healthy diet. From his book, I quote Imagine waking up every morning with a clear mind, ready to tackle the day's challenges. This clarity isn't just a fleeting benefit. It is a result of consistently eating foods that support brain health. Over time, these dietary choices do more than keep you sharp. They transform your overall well-being. For instance, a brain-healthy diet enhances cognitive function. You'll notice improvements in your memory, focus and problem-solving skills. This isn't just anecdotal. Long-term studies, such as those focusing on the Mediterranean diet, have shown that individuals adhering to these eating patterns experience better cognitive function and reduced risk of mental health disorders. Well, Mady, you definitely cook Mediterranean style for sure, along with many, many amazing Romanian dishes.

Mady Killfoil:

Yeah, this is true, because this is how I saw my mother cooking, so this is what I'm doing now and, as a woman going through menopause, I found Chapter 4 really helpful. Many menopausal women suffer from depression. I'm one of the lucky ones that, you know, I don't suffer from that, and it was interesting how he showed, by increasing omega-3 fatty acids in the diet help combat that. As you know, the brain is encased in healthy fats and those fatty acids help reduce inflammation and support the production of neurotransmitters. This is why I tell people who are under heavy study at the university to increase their omega-3 oils while cramming for exams. The brain is similar to a squeaky door, and what do you do when a door squeaks? You add oil, you are oiling it right. The brain operates much the same, and Stefan McDermott took it a step further in his book by writing it so anyone could read it, understand it and, most of it, apply it to improve their overall brain health. How do you get a copy, Steven?

Steven Killfoil:

Well, that is capital B0DYWMB929, into the search bar and the book will pop up at the top of the page. Or, if you want to dial directly into it, go to https://www. amazon. com/dp/B0DYWMB929. And that'll take you right to the book and it's ready to purchase. Get your copy today. It's only $16.99. It's an amazing read. Later on this year, once we have launched out Crossroads Podcast on its own YouTube channel, we will have Stefan McDermott back on the show and you, Mady, will be conducting that interview. I just bet you're excited about that.

Mady Killfoil:

Yes, indeed, it will be my honor to interview him.

Mady Killfoil:

Yes, indeed, whatever concerns you, we will research it. Concerns you, we will research it. We will try to bring you an answer if you have a question, or just talk about it and make some suggestions, recommendations. Maybe it's something that we encounter. Maybe we are dealing with, like, I'm trying to find my insulin resistance and I'm trying very hard not to become a diabetic, so maybe somebody out there has the same problem. You know menopausal women and hormonal imbalances and hypothyroidism. I mean, it's just with age, everything is piling up on you.

Steven Killfoil:

Yeah https://www. linkedin. com/in/madalinaanagnostekillfoil/, I mean, goodness gracious. They say you fall apart. I mean, now I understand why the Beatles wrote the song when I'm 64.

Mady Killfoil:

Well, the two of us are trying very hard and I think we are doing a great job on not letting that disturb our lives and we are doing everything that we can to stay healthy, become healthier, and we are educating ourselves, and this is why we are trying to share the knowledge and educate the others out there that are willing to listen. And if you will take it and apply it, that will help you a lot, because you will actually change your life and you will stop getting sick. Look around you Everybody is obese and getting diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, arthritis all kinds of diseases that can be actually reversed or prevented.

Steven Killfoil:

Absolutely, absolutely. We encourage anyone out there who would like to learn more about any type of health challenge to reach out to us. We'll research it, we'll get a doctor on here to answer your questions, whatever it takes, but I promise you, if you email me with something, you will get an answer one way or another. We are always trying to find different health practitioners to come onto the show, and this is why we decided to donate one episode a month to the health news for everybody out here in Crossroads, because we're actually doing it. We're doing something about it and, if you guys are interested, we do have some recordings on good, healthy recipes up at our YouTube channel, kitchen Corner Healthy Cooking. Check that out. We'll be posting more goodies up there.

Steven Killfoil:

I've got some amazing bread bakes that I want to put up there Super easy, simple recipes. The bottom line is, if you really truly want to change your health for the better, you have to change your lifestyle a little bit. You've got to make some sacrifices. A lot of people have excuses like oh, cooking takes so long, oh, I don't know how, oh, it's just too much.

Mady Killfoil:

Or I can't give up bread, or I can't give up dairy cheese, whatever. Well, guess what? We have been doing this for the last, uh, six months or so, and we are getting ready to start another program with Dr Anna Kabeca, and for two months, for eight weeks, we will be gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free Well, we've been sugar-free for years now, but this is what we are going to do, we are getting ready to do, starting Monday.

Steven Killfoil:

After Easter yeah, I want my lamb leg.

Mady Killfoil:

Well, that's also on the menu, so we will be enjoying it. Yeah, on the menu moving forward, but I wanted to say that, uh, this coming weekend friday, saturday and sunday you will be attending a fair health fair oh, that's right, yes, and you might find uh interest interesting things and and interesting people that might want to come on your show to certainly will be reaching out to them.

Steven Killfoil:

You better believe it. Yes, and I will have an amazing show to report to you next month on a device that we have in our own house that we use, called Wellness Pro, and I'll tell you more about that next month, because that's a whole show. But this health fair that I'm getting ready to attend this weekend we're going to be dialing in and focusing in on exactly how to use this amazing tool to benefit our health and make us better yeah, yeah, it's.

Mady Killfoil:

It's just amazing how, how much um it can help you and we. You have to tell them when you'll do the podcast. You have to tell them the story, the reason behind us purchasing the device?

Steven Killfoil:

Oh, I absolutely will. You better believe it, okay, well, again, Mady, thank you for co-hosting the show with me today.

Mady Killfoil:

Thanks for inviting me.
