Hi everyone, Bella here, host of Seek Travel Ride. This is episode number three in our midweek cycle shorts series, these mini episodes where I happily share the experiences of our listeners and one day of their trip. Today's episode features Barbara, one of the pair from the account Two Locos on Wheels. Barbara is currently on a long distance multi-year world tour with her husband Geordie. She and Geordie have cycled from Ireland through Europe and also some pretty incredible experiences cycling through South America as well. They've made their way all the way down to Ushuaia in Chile. But this anecdote that Barbara shares comes from the day that they were cycling across the border from France into Spain. It was a day of high emotions because Geordie is from Barcelona, so the idea of finally cycling across the border into his home country was a strong one. But this day would become memorable for a totally different reason. Without going into the details, no further ado, let's listen to Barbara tell us about one day on her trip.

Hi Bella, I'm Barbara. I'm currently cycling in South America. And here is the story of my one day journey. We've been actually in France the night before, for the first time ever, we were sleeping under the stars on the beach. And the next morning, of course, we we got up and you know we started to prepare and we cycle. Unfortunately, that day, despite the heat wave which was coming up, we started a bit late. So, like in the middle of the day, like about you know the 12, you know, it became like 38 degrees, and my body for some reason doesn't react well if it comes to the heat. So like badly sweating, and we were really doing our best, you know, to cross that day to Spain. I knew like you know, he he would really want to, you know, to touch his um Jordi to touch his um land. So in the middle of it, it wasn't possible. The route was going you know through the mountains. We we meant to cross uh in La Jonquera, and it was that tiny little road where I actually said, I can't, I can't do it anymore. And Jordi that time, you know, we have a um bag, like Orteliev bag, which is uh working for us as a shower. So uh he ran to the closest bar and beg for the cold water. Well, I've done something that I've never even thought I would ever do with in my life. I kind of look around if there is someone, there was nobody, and I literally stripped myself from the clothes and I just poured the freezing cold water, you know, on my body just to cool down. You know, it was horrendous. So those first seconds, you know, we're like, okay, it's a little bit better. Put the back clothes on, and we walk, you know, to the like a small, you know, bar from you know where Jordi was coming from, and the French lady, like she's been so good. This was like I think about one o'clock, and it's been actually some warnings going around about the temperatures for the day, so she told us that there is absolutely no problem, you know, we can um we can stay there as long as we need to, and we actually stayed till like 7 pm, and instead of camping, we decided to continue cycling. It was much better, and uh we did cross the border, very, very emotional moment, you know, um for the two of us, but especially for Jordi, you know, coming to to his Spain, you know, home. It was like wow. And I don't know, I think we got you know such an extra energy boost that I remember we we did, you know, extra kilometers and we reached uh figures that day. Yeah, and then we we took the rest. But yeah, uh actually stripping myself in the middle of the road, that was something that I never recovered in my mind that it will happen ever.

I can only imagine what that must have been like for Barbara. Suffering from heat stroke is no joke, and I can't even fathom what it would have been like for them travelling in 38 degrees heat with that world tour cycling load on their bikes bearing down on them too. And you can only imagine what she must have been feeling like in that moment as well, where heat strokes taking hold, the idea of just stripping off in the middle of the road and pouring that ice cold water over her as well. I think the other lesson to take there was sometimes you just need to do what you need to do just to get by and it sounds like taking a few hours off, not cycling through the heat of the day was really what they both needed. And I love that a day that potentially could have had quite serious implications there with heat stroke actually then turned into quite a magical experience for them as well. And instead of staying where they were at 7pm at night, taking to the bikes again and cycling over the border and remembering just beautiful moments together. I love that this is the memory that Barbara has shared for us. I'm particularly excited to share this story as well because I have a full interview with Barbara and Geordie to come on the podcast, so definitely keep your eyes out for that as well.
