my first glimpse into hormonal imbalances was really more on the mental health side. Like, that's where my symptoms personally started. I really found myself in a place of debilitating anxiety, really intense depression. Um, I had really high highs and low lows. Like my mood swings felt really out of control. My fatigue was extreme, like no matter how much I slept, no matter how well I ate, no matter what kind of, you know, supplements I was utilizing, leaning on caffeine and sugar, all of those things, it really wasn't helping me feel energized or better in any way. And on this episode, we're going to talk specifically about hormones and the importance of having your hormones balanced and what could actually happen, how your life can start looking. Like when they're off balance, even though maybe traditional medicine is telling you that everything's okay. Erin comes on here and gives us her expertise on this topic. So let's get into the episode. Hey Aaron, welcome to you first podcast. Thank you so much for being on here today. I am so excited to have this conversation because we've, we've talked about it recently just a little bit when we met and just now I've had so much, so many struggles and challenges with my own hormones and I'm only 35, 34 actually, I'm not even 35 yet. And I think it's something that needs to be talked about more, especially in the thirties because I honestly, it just surprised me that I was having these challenges. So I. So appreciate you being on here and having this conversation with me today. Oh my goodness, Maria. Thank you so much. I am thrilled to be here and so grateful to connect and can't wait to kind of have this conversation and dive right in because to your point, it's really important for women to normalize hormones, our inside out wellness and just relate on what we're actually experiencing. So I'm so glad to be here. Thank you for coming. And so let's, let's just dive into the hormone topic. I think wellness and hormones kind of go hand in hand and maybe tell us a little bit about how, what got you into this work and maybe some of your own challenges. That's such a great question and it's kind of loaded, right? I have a wide, a wide range of different pieces to my own wellness journey that I've personally dove into, but I will start after my fourth kiddo and um, cause that's really when I started to see some pretty significant shifts that I had never experienced before. You know, throughout my life I had always had, you know, different mental health hurdles and different things from a wellness standpoint that I had always been working through. I had always tried to Stay active and keep myself healthy, but I really never experienced. Shifting like I did after my fourth baby ever quite like that before. So that was really my first glimpse into what is this next level of my health. And how are my health needs changing and evolving as I grow older and as I get into postpartum. But really as it relates to what I felt in my late 20s, in my early 30s. It's been really an eye opening experience for me to kind of go through these different seasons and really understand how much our health truly evolves over time. And really, how much our health as females ebbs and flows every single day of the month based on our cycles, based on our infradian rhythm, and based on what's actually happening with our hormones. every single day. And so my first glimpse into this, like I said, was after my fourth baby, which was right before covid hit. It was the end of 2019 into 2020. I was freshly postpartum, had four kids. My oldest at the time was eight. So I had an eight year old, six year old, four year olds. And then my little guy and, um, it was just a wild ride of trying to figure out how I'm going to homeschool these older kids alongside having a toddler and having a newborn. And so I was managing all of these things around me. And at the same time, like my entire being felt depleted. Like I really was getting into this space of not taking great care of myself, trying to kind of grind through what I was once doing to help myself feel better. But. What I learned was everything that I was leaning on was actually starting to backfire. So the habits that I had built for a really long time that I thought were quote unquote healthy actually were not really serving my wellness as my health was evolving over time. And so my first glimpse into hormonal imbalances was really more on the mental health side. Um, I had really low libido. That was a huge one inside of our, my, my marriage and our relationship. And between all of these different facets of our, of my wellness, I just. realize that there was something deeper that I wasn't really understanding, right? I wasn't grasping what was really, truly needed for my female physiology because I was never educated about it. And one of the things I love about how you and I have connected Maria is you have so much knowledge already around like working with your female physiology. How do you get in tune with your cycle? Like how do you understand what's happening with your energy at different phases of the month? You know, how do you tune into that? And how do you really nurture yourself in a way that is intuitive rather than based on a calendar or based on how something else outside of you is kind of dictating what you should be doing? And that's really what I had to slowly start to learn. So in that season, as I was going through a lot of these hormonal symptoms that I didn't even recognize necessarily as hormonal imbalances, I started to really get educated about root cause medicine. and getting more exposure to functional testing, working with functional medicine practitioners and doing kind of deep dive testing and understanding the intricate levels of not only my lifestyle and how my habits play a role in my how I feel, but also like really, truly how my physiology works as a woman. And that was not something I ever had education around. I just never had that information shared with me about, you know, how how powerful it can be to start to craft your habits and your lifestyle around what your energy is really doing every single day of the month. And so in that season is when I started to dive into additional health certifications. I went on to get my personal training certification. I went on to get a nutrition certification through precision nutrition. Um, and I also got connected to one of the. women that I partner very closely with now, um, inside a community called sink. And that community is really focused on hormone health education for women, like giving us the tools and the education we all should have learned 30 years ago, but never really had exposure to it. And that has really changed the way I look at wellness. It changed the way I think about how to take care of my health. It changed the way I craft my healthy habits. So to speak, because one of the lessons I learned inside my own hormonal imbalances and the fluctuation I was experiencing again was that the habits I had put into practice for so long, we're really no longer working anymore. And what I mean by that are things like I used to get up first thing in the morning and work out fasted. I used to run on caffeine and sugar. I used to not really prioritize adequate protein and instead, relied on a lot of carbohydrates in my day. I barely ate fiber, did not do a lot of vegetables and did not have a lot of variety in my nutrition. I used to only work out one kind of way, usually like hit workouts, really hard balls to the wall. Like, let's just get in and get out and not really always paying attention to my energy. And I did that all the time, regardless of where my hormones were at, regardless of how I actually felt in my body. I was Following the calendar, this is what it said to do. And I just kind of went and grinded through it rather than trying to kind of get into my own intuition and figure out what my body was telling me it actually needed. Um, I would do things like blue screens all day, all night, didn't really have a lot of boundaries around social media. Um, and just really wasn't actually practicing habits that were going to essentially serve me well in the season I was in, but also for my longevity health. And that's something that I've had to learn over time. And so It's been an eye opening journey for me. And um, there are so many things I know now that I wish I would have known even five years ago. If I would have known even five years ago how my habits were going to eventually affect my wellness and my hormone health, as it has now, I would have changed things so much. Yeah, it's one of those things like, you know, better, you do better and once you know better, you know, you can start to make shifts and start to share and be honest and open about your experience and transparent about your experience. And that's really what I'm so passionate about. And the work I do is I want women to understand that we're not alone and kind of going forward. figuring out this wellness puzzle because for so long there's been a lot shared with us and marketed to us on what is healthy and what we should be doing rather than empowering us to step into figuring out, well, what do we need as individuals and what is our individual health look like and feel like and how do we continue to lean into that intuition? So in a nutshell, that's kind of my story. So powerful. And thank you so much for being so vulnerable because I think so many of us struggle with this. And to be honest, I felt so lonely when last year I lost my menstrual cycle for a few months. I was like, what's wrong with me? Something's broken in me. But just like you, I had habits that I had been doing all my twenties. I would, I loved to hit cardio, you know, intermittent fasting did all the things that I felt like helped me feel better at the time, but they weren't working anymore. And it was like within seconds. And I also think I was going through a lot of stress. And it sounds like you were too after baby number four and you nailed it right on the head. I think we need to get better at knowing what works for us. I think there's so much out there. It's information overload, but does it work for us? And I think we're, and maybe you can attest to this too, where we feel frustrated that we try these things. And then nothing works, and then so we get frustrated, and we blame the gym, or we blame the way we were born, or whatever, the reasons why we can't lose weight, and it has nothing to really do with any of that, and it's not our, it's not our age, because I know plenty of 60, 70 year olds that look Amazing and feel great. And that's so important. And I can't wait to ask you more questions about this because I really want to know what, what were the first things for you kind of that, that brought up like, okay, wait a minute, this isn't working. I know you said you worked with some specialists, but how can someone that's maybe feeling confused? I don't even know, maybe if it is hormonal. Cause you touched on mental health too. Sometimes we were just like, Oh, I'm depressed. Or I'm anxious and really your hormones will make you feel that way. I can, I can attest to that because I've been feeling like a hormonal mess the last like year. And so tell me, like, how did you go from that overwhelmed, you know, feeling, you know, maybe it's mental health, maybe it's not. And then finding some of these answers. That's such a great question too. And I have to kind of draw it back, honestly, to connecting with other women that were sharing their stories. That's really what started to become. The thing that was helpful for me, because the more I like got connected to women that were being vulnerable about their experience and sharing what they were learning and also unlearning, the more it kind of gave me permission to say, you know what, like I can, I can question some of this a little bit, right? I can get into this place of feeling like education is the way I want to continue to go so I can step into advocating for my health. on a personal level. You know, so much of what I've personally learned, especially from a mental health piece, is that oftentimes as we evolve into these different life transitions in our female health journey, there are often Recommendations around well, here's what you need to address your mental health or here's the antidepressant that you should go on Or here's the quick fix that can help you feel better in the moment Rather than saying like how can we go deeper and question? Maybe the root cause of what's actually going on and that's not anything that I ever had in my own Mindset until I started to get connected to other women that were doing the same and starting to share their vulnerable truths to and talking about how they were getting educated about root cause medicine and they were getting educated about how valuable it can be to kind of meet in the middle of, you know, the western medicine doctors that you may be utilized, but also getting getting connected to people that are sharing more of the functional lens. And that was not anything that I ever had exposure to. Kind of like I said, so much of what I've learned have really has really been in the last like 5 to 7 years. Before that, it was just Doing what I always had done and grinding through it and just hoping that I was eventually going to feel better. So to answer your question, I feel like in a nutshell, it really is starting to connect with other women that are sharing stories. I feel like, you know, social is a powerful place. I feel like listening to podcasts is a powerful place. So like doing research to figure out who's maybe talking about hormone health, who's talking about hormones and how they affect our mental, mental health. Who's talking about root cause medicine and how that affects women's health overall in our female physiology and how can we go deeper on understanding what it is that can actually serve us for the long haul. I think, you know, having conversations with friends and getting into groups and communities where you can, you know, relate to other women is really important. And then I also think like doing research to find coaches like me or other coaches that are also doing this deep dive work to serve and change the narrative inside women's health. Um, it's such a good question because I think. You know, for each of us, it's so unique, but I really want to empower women to do the research and if something in your gut feels like, you know what, there's more to this story, I'm not going to just sit here and accept maybe what my doctor is saying, or I'm not going to sit here and feel gaslit and not heard in my symptoms, or I'm not going to sit here and just accept like, being given an antidepressant based on how I'm feeling. I want to know more about the why inside my body, right? And I want to give myself permission to kind of dive deeper and figure out what is it that I can change from a lifestyle standpoint, from a protocol standpoint with a practitioner, from an overall habit standpoint that will help me potentially address some of the things that I'm feeling. So hopefully that answers your question. Cause it's, it's, It's kind of hard to pinpoint exactly what it was, but for me, it really was getting connected to other women. Like who else is sharing this? How, how do I like understand I'm not crazy and the only one, you know, totally. I felt. So I'll tell you a little bit about what happened with me. I lost my menstrual cycle. Like you said, you go to the doctors and They literally ran tests and they're like, all your hormones are normal. There's nothing wrong with you. Later, I find out that their labs and the tests that they run are based on who goes to the doctor. So their average normal isn't really normal for a healthy 30 something year old, 33 year old or whatever, however old I was. And so they were like, well, your period's gone. So All we can tell you to do is just take more progesterone and we'll induce your period that way. And I'll come back. And I was like, well, that doesn't make sense. Like you're telling me all my hormones are fine. So you want to jack me up with some hormones so that my period comes forces my body to get back in sync. So that, that started just feeling really off. So I started going and I didn't do any research and I'm glad that you mentioned that because I do want this episode to be a resource for people to know where to start and I'll link, I would love to know more about that sync community. And of course how to work with you so that my audience knows, but I didn't know that I should research things. So I was like, well, I know that I can go to maybe like an acupuncturist. So I went to an acupuncturist and she helped me, she got, she got my cycle back, but I still felt like off, like something was off and it's been a journey since, but I wish there was more information because I'm 34 and I think, I don't think I know. I didn't think about menopause or perimenopause or hormonal issues. I didn't even think that that was going to be a thing. I thought maybe there was something bigger that was wrong with me. You know, I didn't realize that hormonal changes start so early and. And how much it could affect your life. Like you said, I mean, you, you touched a little bit about how it affected your libido, your energy and all these other things. I mean, what are other symptoms that you were like, this just seems different and it's not the same. Like, how can people listening to this be like, wait a minute, it could be hormonal versus like, maybe I'm just tired or, or anything else. Like, what were some of your symptoms? Other symptoms. So one of the ways I describe one of my biggest symptoms is I felt like I was walking around with a weighted blanket. Right. Like I would get up out of the bed in the, in the morning and it just felt like I was walking around with this like fog and doom and gloom and this weighted blanket. And no matter what, like, no matter what I ate, no matter how hard I worked out, no matter how much I slept, no matter how much I tried to meditate and stress manage, talk to my people, go to therapy. Like it just always felt like I had this weighted blanket walking around. And that's the best way I can describe it because it just, it affected everything. Like my energy, my mood, how like my fatigue overall and just my desire to like be in society and be connecting with people like I always had been. Right. So like, that was really the biggest part for me is I realized I really wasn't myself. Like I truly didn't feel like my own person because my mood and my, my personality almost started to shift. Those were big symptoms for me. You know, a lot of other symptoms that I, my clients express and that other women that I work with have expressed are things like unexplained headaches all the time. Um, acne is another big one. Like if, no matter what you do, if you're swapping products, if you're trying to, you know, eat clean and if you still have acne issues and things like that, those are other big symptoms. And I think it's so easy to often just equate it to something that's outside of our control when at the end of the day it could very much be inside our control and it could be something that's happening on a root cause level with our hormones. And so, symptoms are a wide range and what's interesting is depending on what the, this, depending on what kind of imbalances you might be managing, the symptoms can be very similar, right? So like, Some women are deficient in progesterone, right? And so that will potentially lead to certain symptoms. Some women are super stressed out and have like bottomed out cortisol that will lead to certain kinds of symptoms that can be similar to hormonal imbalances with your sex hormones. You know, there's a wide variety, but so many of them overlap, which is why it's so important to start to get educated about, you know, What are my hormones doing every single month and what do they look like at different times in my cycle? And if they aren't ebbing and flowing to the natural rhythm that they should be, what are the symptoms that can pop up? And those are all the things that I've learned inside of the SYNC community and inside my SYNC certification, which has literally changed the game for how I think about my health, because now I have a better understanding of When should my progesterone be rising? If it's not rising, what kind of symptoms can crop up and when should my cortisol essentially start to elevate? And if it's not elevating, what kind of symptoms start to show up? And so I've also learned alongside those kinds of things inside the SYNC community. I've also been exposed to how intricately connected our endocrine system is. And so for women, our endocrine system is made up of our thyroid, our insulin, which is our blood, blood, blood sugar, blood glucose, our cortisol, which is our stress hormone, and then our sex hormones, progesterone, testosterone, and estrogen. And all of those things are intricately connected. And when one of them starts to go out of balance, it will throw off the rest of them. So what's interesting for women specifically, and this is something that I worked through in my coaching is oftentimes blood sugar imbalance can be a huge driver for hormonal symptoms, hormonal imbalances, and it can and not feeling that great, right? Sometimes really added stress, like you talked about, Maria, and having cortisol all out of whack can lead to hormonal imbalances and not feeling great. So, because those things are so intricately connected, we have to be speaking about you know, how they can interact with each other, and again, what symptoms can show up as one of them potentially falls out of balance. So, that's just some of the things that I kind of like to talk about and speak about that I've learned, but also just kind of educate about in relation to symptoms, because the symptoms Transcripts can be a wide range of things. Yeah. When you talked about stress, cause how many of us can relate to stress? All of us, we're all so stressed out, especially in our thirties. If you have children, if you're juggling multiple things and then we think like it's just stress related or. I know there's a lot of like PCOS out there. And when I started actually researching, like fast forward, then I started actually researching things, all these things are symptoms and when doctors and places don't have, or don't understand what's causing it, they just put a label on it and then they just want to throw medicine at it to see what happens. And if you Google PCOS, it's like a list of symptoms that could possibly be PCOS, but it has nothing to do with like actual like cysts. Cause I thought it was like ovarian cysts related. But no, you can have PCOS even if you don't have cysts, so, which is crazy because when I shared about my hormonal issues on Instagram, I've had women tell me like, oh yeah, I have PCOS, and like, you probably do, but maybe it's just a big hormonal imbalance, right? And they're just sticking a label onto you, and you think that that's just, like, the way that they've approached me and told me about it, it's like a death sentence. They're like, I just have PCOS, so this is just like my life now. You know, they kind of just feel like that's just what they have to live with. And I love that you're bringing so much awareness and attention to, we, we don't have to live not feeling good. We don't have to live not understanding our bodies and not working with our bodies and, and being such like type a busy hustler that I am being in sync with my cycle, like the week of my cycle and a couple of days leading up to it. I don't stress myself out. I don't. Overdo it on my calendar because I know that I'm only I'm gonna I'm gonna push the rubber band I'm gonna like explode and rip the rubber band if I do that And so I work with myself instead of against myself, but that's taken me It took me losing my period working with multiple people Understanding things to even get here and I'm still not where I want to be. Actually. I'm working now with a Functional holistic doctor that's gonna give me more supplements and so I'm gonna Foods, you said you're more holistic and functional stuff. Are you currently in a plan or like what would what would that look like if somebody did want a more holistic approach? Is it supplements or what what are you on that that's helped you? So I personally work with a functional medicine doctor and I've done a variety of root cause testing with her. And she's helped me uncover like my cortisol imbalance and my sex hormone imbalance. We've also talked a lot about, um, overall my thyroid health, right? Like my thyroid health isn't terrible, but it's something that we're staying mindful of as I age, right? And then, my blood sugar. Like blood sugar is a huge one that my functional medicine practitioner and I talk about quite a bit. I mean, I have my nutrition certification, but we also are always talking about how much blood glucose and eating consistently throughout the day and getting adequate protein and not getting into like that mode where you're starving and overdo it. Like all of those things are really important to pay attention to when you're addressing something like hormone health. So for me, I work with a functional medicine doctor. Um, I have a couple different supplements that I take, right? I take, I actually am starting or I have started in the past handful of years hormone replacement therapy based on my unique testing, right? What my body identified as deficiencies. Um, I also focus on things like detoxification support, vitamin D, magnesium. Um, what else am I utilizing? Fish oil, because I actually don't eat a lot of fish. Fish oil is a big one, especially for brain health. Um, I'm trying to think of what else that I utilize, but those are like, those are the big ones. And I think again, the thing to understand about any kind of supplement protocol or anything that you want to potentially implement in your own life, so much of the value of getting targeted and efficient with it is making sure that you're working with a knowledgeable practitioner. So Maria, you talked about how you went to the doctor and they, your blood and they said, you know, everything is in the normal range, but what people don't understand is normal is not optimal. And when you're trying to get to this place of feeling optimal, you have to address what are optimized ranges for your bio individual health. And that comes down to working with a practitioner that has the knowledge around women's health and hormone health. And so inside of my coaching program, I actually have a partnership. where I can refer women very strategically to a functional medicine doctor that has hormone health knowledge, that has the information that really will serve women's health well. And that kind of thing matters. That's one of the things that I've personally learned on my own journey is working with a knowledgeable practitioner matters. And that's not to say that there are doctors out there that are not qualified. It's just more or less doctors have different scope of knowledge. That's just what it comes down to. And something like hormone health is so specific and so bio, bio individual to each female, especially that working with someone that can really understand what's the difference between normal and optimal. What are the things that we're looking for when it comes to deficiencies and how can we help serve your health? Well matters. And that's why you want to make sure that you're working with somebody that has that lens and has that scope of knowledge so they can really serve you very intentionally on your health journey. So that's kind of where I'm at for me. And it's been really game changing for my health as it's evolved over time. Yeah, and thank you for sharing that because it's it is very individualized and if anyone's hearing this and listening I lost my menstrual cycle back last March yes, not this year, but last year March and It's it was a journey of six months a lot of trial and error. I was very cheap I did not want to pay for somebody to tell me what was wrong Or I didn't even realize that all these different things and layers existed so I just So Aaron, what you're doing and just facilitating a place where if you're listening to this and you're like, I don't even know where to start. Aaron's where you start. This is where you start. She helps you and she connects you because it can be so overwhelming and I would have saved so much time and now energy and money if I would have just gone to a professional that specialized in individuals and how to work with their biological systems individually, not just because I did go to a hormone replacement doctor back in Orlando, um, beginning of this year. And I didn't like the protocol that they put me on. I didn't like that. They weren't testing me as often. And so I actually had to get off of those and You can only imagine you get on hormone replacements. It's not working. That was the whole thing of mood swings and and then getting off of them. So save yourself time and energy and just schedule a consultation, speak to Erin or someone like Erin, whoever. Just start with somebody that knows what they're doing and honestly somebody that's already gone through it, too, because it could be a very lonely, scary and confusing time, especially if you don't have any anyone in your age group or friends. Like I had no one in my age group that had gone through it. any hormonal issues like this. I had older friends that had children and stuff and they've had issues, but not somebody I've never even had a child. So I was like, why is my body acting like this? So I so appreciate that you came on here and you, you shared so much knowledge and you spotlighted a lot of things that people feel women feel often and you're not alone. So if you're listening to this, you're not alone and there is places and people that could help you. And for your vulnerability, Aaron. And how can my audience find you? How can they work with you? Maria, thanks again for having me. So the best place to find me and connect is on Instagram. I'm at Aaron K Trier, it's T R I E R. And, um, I would love to connect. I would love to hear your story, would love to share my best recommendations based on anything that you might be experiencing, you know, I really want women to feel empowered. in their personal health journey. And I want women to understand that there are resources and knowledgeable places to get support and help. And there is hope and healing and answers. And, um, it's just a matter of continuing to do the research and get connected. And I would love to connect with anybody that wants to kind of dive in deeper. Yeah, amazing. And I'll link everything in the show notes so you guys know where to go. And if nothing else, I hope this episode gave you some motivation to change something in your life because we all do have control. And I know I talk about a lot of personal development on here and I've gone deep into that the last seven years and just working with different therapists and modalities and healing and ayahuasca and whatever. But none of that really mattered when my hormones went to crap, guys. Like, none of that mattered because the depression was there, the anxiety was there, the overwhelm was there. It had nothing to do with how much I healed my past, my traumas, my things. Hormones are a bitch. If they're out of whack. So, thank you again for coming. They really are. They really are. Well, thank you so much for coming. As we come to the close of this episode, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude and admiration for you.
