Speaker 1And for today's guest , jennifer Maxwell , she is the creator of Jam Bar , but she's also a musician and she put a link in there so you can see her drumming . So she'll be a drummer in a band that she's going to let you guys check out her music . So do that . So , speaking of Jennifer , yeah , she created Jam Bar . You guys , it's all organic , it's , it's a treat . So be sure and check that out at your local stores or on Amazon . So let's get to the program and listen to my discussion with Jenny . Hey , jenny , welcome to the Carla . Good to be with you today . Oh , I'm so happy to have you on . I'm so excited to hear all about Jam Bar . I think the first thing I'd like to know is how you came up with the name .
Speaker 2Oh , interesting , you ask that because I actually came up with a formulation before the name . Oh okay , I was like well , I have have this great product . What are we going to name it ? Um , the name is really um , a result of combining my passions of running and music .
Speaker 2Okay , your jam on is our slogan very cool and then , incidentally , it also is my initials j-a-m , so jennifer and maxwell . So that was that was . You know , we didn't even use that as a Originally . It also was my initials J-A-M , so Jennifer and Maxwell . So that was . You know , we didn't even use that as a main reason . We figured that out later . So it's really about music and about sports .
Speaker 1That's awesome . So , yeah , so you're a runner and a musician . Yeah , so is the running . What inspired you to do the Jam Bar ?
Speaker 2Because I also know that you're a food scientist , correct . I think the fact that I'm a food scientist and nutritionist is the main reason because I love to create and I saw a need in the marketplace for a product like Jam Bar .
Speaker 1As I said , the combination of being a lifelong athlete and a musician just made it more pertinent really and relevant to create a company that would give back to music and active living we call it , which is really sports . So let's talk about the Jam Bar and its nutrition panel .
Speaker 2And you said there was such a need for it . Tell us about the nutritional panel . Yeah , so you know I got out of the food industry back . My husband passed away in 2003 . You know we started the whole energy bar industry with Power . Bar in the late 80s , mid-late 80s .
Speaker 2So I have a long history of the food industry and of energy bars , right creating the whole category okay got out of the industry , raised my , my family I have six children brought in , I have six children and um brian castaway , as I mentioned in 2004 , um , you know , just kind of did a lot of other things and then re-entered the category , thinking that I want to use my training , I want to use my expertise , which really is food science and being creative , and I saw a need in the marketplace for a higher quality bar . There's a crowded category right with lots of different bars over 100 different bars and I thought well , for one reason or the other , these are products that I wouldn't really eat on a daily basis . I didn't feel that good about eating it . I wanted something organic not very many organic bars . I also want something that didn't use what I call manufactured sugars or sugar substitutes or fake sugars .
Speaker 2Jam bar is real food , sweetened with maple syrup and then sugar from grapes , honey or date . So it's super high quality . We have two different types of protein , depending on what a consumer wants either plant protein , whether it's sunflower seed protein , or whey protein . So it's really a comprehensive food product , organic and has a lot of really good nutrition in it oh , I know and has a lot of really good nutrition in it .
Speaker 1Oh , I know . So are all of the ingredients organic or you have just a line that's organic Everything .
Speaker 2Everything organic . We have five flavors and they're all organic . Wow , yeah , yeah , and I'm a big proponent of the organic food movement to help protect the earth and protect consumers . I think organic products are better for the earth and better for people .
Speaker 1Absolutely , definitely better for us . So how long have you been a runner ?
Speaker 2I started running as a teenager . I started running when I was about 12 , and I still run today .
Speaker 1And so these bars are easily packed to take with you .
Speaker 2Yeah .
Speaker 2I mean the functionality of the product is great for athletes . So when brian and I created power bar , really the motive motivation then was to create an easy to digest product for athletes . So we didn't put any like coating on the outside . You know a lot of products have like , uh , enrobing , like a chocolate coating , like a handy bar . Back in the day that was unheard of , and so when we developed power bar it was really well , the athletes liked to use this product because it didn't melt in their hands , it didn't have a lot of fat , it was really low fat so it's easier to digest a product that's lower in fat . So that kind of created the athletic energy food movement , I like to say .
Speaker 2And Jam Bar is similar to that in its structure . It doesn't have an enrobing , it's a low to moderate amount of fat . So the ease of digestion is there for athletes as well . And then , as I mentioned , the functionality it doesn't crumble , doesn't break , doesn't melt , doesn't freeze , which is really useful if you're going to go on a hike or you're going to stick it in your car or in your music bag or backpack or whatever your purse . Um , just , you know the texture of the product is , um , super usable that way yeah , it sounds like so .
Speaker 1However it comes , that's how you can pull it out of your purse , and it's going to be the same way yeah , pretty much the your shelf life and um and all real healthy food wow , that's amazing . Well , we're very thankful for that , for sure . And what ? What year did you create jambar ? How long have you been around ?
Speaker 2yeah , so , um , jambar started the formulation process in 2015 . 2016 to about four , four years okay , it was a formulation process , getting the business plan together . Um , we launched the product and we make our own product . 2016 to about four , four years . Okay , it was a formulation process , getting the business plan together , we launched the product and we make our own product as well . So it's not co-packed , which is another differentiating factor . Our quality , we started in 2021 .
Speaker 1So not very long , yeah , yeah . Now is it only available , like I would have to order from your site , or is it ? Are there in stores or how ?
Speaker 2can I purchase it ? We're across the country . Yeah , we're . We're mainly focused on West Coast and East Coast right now . You know , we're in Whole Foods on the West Coast , east Coast Fresh Market , earth Fair . We're in on the West in the Bay Area , earth Fare . We're in the Bay Area . We're in the Bay Area in San Rafael , marin County . We're in some Safeways , like I mentioned , whole Foods , nugget Market , raley's , good Earth is a big market for us . I mean we're in at this point , I don't know maybe thousands of stores . We've expanded quite nicely . People really like the product .
Speaker 2We also sell in smaller running stores , coffee shops , depending on the area , and then we are on Amazon and we also have our own website , so it's easy to find Jambar .
Speaker 1Very cool . So if I have a Whole Foods in town town , which we do I likely could find it there well , only if you're in norcal or socal , california .
Speaker 2Right , we hope to be launching into more , more regions , but okay , more time .
Speaker 1I have to request it , so they speed that process up , yeah .
Speaker 2So if you're in the middle , if you're somewhere in the country that doesn't have maybe you know if you can't see Jam Bar in your major store or your health food store , Amazon or our website is the best way to go .
Speaker 1Okay , we're going to press for it to be in our local stores there you go . Thank you , so the product in its natural state . I'm going to get all the electrolytes I might need for a run , based on the nutrition that's in those bars . So it's going to be natural sugars and any salts that are in it yeah , a little bit those might be .
Speaker 2We're thinking more what you're drinking for electrolytes , but the basis of using as an athletic energy bar would be its ease of digestion . So , as I mentioned , low to moderate fat , a good amount of protein . There's 10 grams per bar . Also , it has um four grams of soluble fiber , so that fiber helps helps moderate the absorption of the sugars .
Speaker 2So even though they are more healthy . Natural sugars from natural sources , non-manufactured sugars um , you still want to have the protein and the fiber and a little bit of fat in order to not get that big sugar rush that you would with regular just a regular candy bar right so for those reasons it is a really good . I mean , a lot of athletes use jamper during athletic event . You know definitely before and also during and then post races or post event as well , to refill your glycogen yeah , perfect .
Speaker 1So tell me about this um uh , 50 of your proceeds . I've heard that you donate all that . That .
Speaker 2Yeah , so there are three pillars of the company . One is authenticity , and the authenticity is just my time in the industry , creating the energy bar industry from the 80s . Quality , as I mentioned , we're all real food , organic , super healthy , great ingredients , everything you could lick off a spoon is one of our motives . And then the third pillar , like you mentioned , is philanthropy . So giving back to the community is really important to me , it's important to the company , and so Jam Bar aligns itself . We have a donor-advised fund at the Marin Community Foundation , but we emphasize contributing to organizations that promote music and active living . So that can look like donating bars and sometimes funds to a music series , a concert series , a kids music school , an adult music school . And then , of course , you know , athletic events I mean we're in hundreds and hundreds every year . Events I mean we're in hundreds and hundreds every year . We donate a lot of bars to running events , walking events , cycling events , even other sports , climbing soccer , skiing Wow .
Speaker 2Yeah , so we're pretty diverse in terms of what events that we contribute to gotcha .
Speaker 1So why the music ? Because you're a musician . Is that a musician ?
Speaker 2I'm a drummer . I became a drummer in um 2007 and I play in two different bands . Music is a big part of my life and jam on is our slogan and the rappers . If you look at the rapper jam bar , it has little musical icons on it , so the rapper is actually hand-drawn by my daughter . Oh , there's a family component of the company , right so ? And every name of the flavor . So we have musical mango , tropical trio , chocolate cha-cha jam and jazzleberry and walnut melody , right so there's a musical component of every flavor . And then on the wrapper is either instrument or a musician going along with that flavor . They really sort of cute , fun , whimsical . I would say um , positive , you know , the company is very positive , and um , I think music is a positive force in the world , so For sure .
Speaker 1Yeah , you know , I saw the wrappers but , but now , knowing the story , it makes so much more sense to me right , rather they're really .
Speaker 2Um , they're intriguing , they're unusual , and it's because they're hand-drawn . You don't see that very often yeah , for sure .
Speaker 1And how old is your daughter that drew it ? My daughter now is 28 oh okay , when did she draw it ?
Speaker 2Like a while back Early on , so maybe like four years ago . Okay , yeah .
Speaker 1Gotcha Okay .
Speaker 2Yeah , she's not . She's not an art major , though she's an amazing artist .
Speaker 1Nice . Now . Are all of your children involved in the company in some way , or just her with the drawing ?
Speaker 2Several of them are .
Speaker 1Yeah , nice .
Speaker 2Several of them are Different ways , yeah .
Speaker 1And are any others runners or food scientists or musicians ?
Speaker 2They're all active . I have two very competitive runners yes , they're all active , they all do run to some capacity .
Family, Music, Running, and Business
Speaker 2Musicians no , they all have their interests and their passions and their , their drive and things that they're doing .
Speaker 1So yeah , yeah , thank you for asking . Yeah , I like to see if how far they fall from the tree . You know what I mean .
Speaker 2See if they're following in your footsteps at all yeah , well , one my youngest was actually did play the cello and maybe he'll come back to music . But you know , with music the thing is , even if you don't play music as a as a child like I , I didn't play a lot of music as a child I played piano and then sort of came back to it you can always start up music anytime in your life you know , and discover that musical side of yourself . You don't have to start as a child , though it's probably easier to start as a child .
Speaker 1But I started as a child , but I didn't start until I was just over 40 . I tried to learn to play the piano as an adult , and I'm here to say that I don't do that . I just love listening to others because I couldn't figure it out . That's good too . I got to a point in trying to use two hands and start trying to read two lines . In my brain was like yeah , you can't .
Speaker 1So let's talk about your running a little bit . What types of distances ? Or do you do races ? Or just for fun , tell me about your running .
Speaker 2Yeah , so I started running as a young girl , ran a marathon when I was actually 13 years old . Uh , it was amazing , just thought I'd try it and actually ran pretty fast as a little teeny little girl . Uh , ran all through um high school and college , competed at different levels . Um , ran in college , went to uc berkeley . Um , I ran one other marathon when I was 15 . Then I really sort of went to shorter distances , like that's too far , you know , and the 10ks um a couple half marathons . But I've probably competed in literally thousands of races over my , of course of my running career .
Speaker 1Wow .
Speaker 2That's incredible . I'm proud that I'm still running , really , because it's such a joy in my life to be able to get out on the trails , and I stay off the pavement at this point .
Speaker 1Yeah .
Speaker 2I don't compete anymore . You know when Brian passed away , so Brian was an Olympic marathon runner a different level than myself . More , you know when brian passed away , so brian was an olympic marathon runner a different level than myself . He um ran for canada in 1980 .
Speaker 2Although you remember 1980 , there was the , the boycott I don't remember , but yeah , there's a boycott in 1980 , so he didn't get to go , but he was an olympic marathon runner from canada and amazing , amazingly talented Um . But um , you know , running is just , is just a joy in my life and when he passed away I , um , I kind of lost the desire to compete , you know .
Speaker 1Well , I'm glad you're still running , just for sanity's sake and to get out on the trails yeah .
Speaker 2Health and sanity get out on the trails . I love being out in nature , yeah for sure . And then I pass along that passion to my kids . My kids all run , like I said , at one level or the other . Two of them are very competitive .
Speaker 1So with the Jam Bar , what's next for Jam Bar ? Are you thinking more flavors , different concoctions , or what do you got planned for us , if you can tell us ?
Speaker 2Yeah , so we're only three years old , right ?
Speaker 1And , as I mentioned , growing nicely .
Speaker 2We'd like to be . We like to be focusing on really where we are right now . We don't have any new . If we just launched tropical trios , that product only was launched in march , so that's relatively new . But because we're really in this growth phase , we're focusing on doing what we do best right now . We don't have any plans for new products . At the moment we're really just expanding our distribution , going into areas that were not really available yet , you know , and then just doing more good things in the community promoting more music , more athletics , running more biking right , whatever it is and , um , yeah , just doing our part to add value to people's lives .
Speaker 1Sure , yeah , that's so fantastic that you're so giving in your business . You don't see that a lot , so that's really commendable . Yeah , thank
Food Scientist Nutrition and Product Creation
Speaker 1you . So , as a food scientist , do you do other things outside of your own business ? Or was that in the past you did , and now you strictly focus on the business ?
Speaker 2right now I'm running the business , although I'm always interested in reading articles and I still stay like I like to keep up to date , right ?
Speaker 2so sometimes I'll actually go back to things I learned in school and review and is this information still relevant today ? Some basic information about nutrition , because right now there's a lot of fads and , you know , yeah , sometimes misinformation about what you should eat , what you shouldn't eat , what's important , what's not important , that kind of stuff . So I still like to stay current and look at , you know , particularly with ingredients . I'm always interested in what are the new , new ingredients I could be dabbling with to create maybe a new product or , you know , an improvement on anything I already was thinking of doing .
Speaker 2But just in terms of nutrition , I think nutrition is a fascinating subject because my recommendations about how people should eat it's really pretty individualized , you know , because everyone's body is different . You know there's general recommendations about eat more fruits and vegetables and good amount of protein and don't eat a lot of processed food , and all that's true , but there's nuance to that , right , because everyone's metabolism is different . People that have a very efficient metabolism , that have been active their whole lives , can usually um , well , I want to say get away with , but they can usually eat a little bit more simple carbs . And someone who's not active has to really watch their simple carbs as a general rule . But I think a lot of individual preferences go into nutrition as well , you know , culturally , or just preferences about what types of food people like to eat , and I think eating should be enjoyable .
Speaker 2I don't think it should be . You know , listening to the food police all the time . It gets a little , a little . So I like to keep it as real as possible . I do recommend eating real food and minimizing processed food . Yes , um , but you should enjoy what you eat as well .
Speaker 1So that's kind of the advice I give to you yeah , so did you create all of the flavors you have yourself ?
Speaker 2yeah , and you did all the taste testing and everything I did , yeah , I did all the flavors you have yourself . Yeah , and you did all the taste testing and everything .
Speaker 2I did . Yeah , I did all the flavors . It takes a while because I came up with a concept and I really changed a lot about different proteins . I was going to use , like I said , the sweeteners . I researched that a lot Different nut butters , different grains , because it's really a gluten-free , grain-based product . We're using what we call ancient grains , so we've got quinoa , sorghum , brown rice and oat bran , so it really is a gluten-free , grain-based product . And then you add other things right to get your formulation the way you want it . And I think that's really what I enjoy the most is looking at different ingredients and thinking about how I can combine ingredients in a tasteful way in a shelf stable product right , because you know you have to be able to . The product has to be able to stay good for a certain period of time to be commercially produced , right .
Speaker 1Yeah , and that's what I find interesting , that when you mentioned that it has a year shelf life , that normally in my brain I don't know that much about foods , but you know , except for in my fridge stuff lasts about four days before it goes bad , right , unless it's super processed . For it to last that long , there's gotta be a lot of junk in there , you know . So that's great thought . Yeah , right , because we don't .
Speaker 2We don't lot of junk in there , you know . Well , that's a great thought .
Speaker 2Yeah , right , because we don't , we don't have any junk in there , and that has a lot to do with F , being a food scientist , being able to formulate you know we have low water activity , right . So your water activity is what is going to have any kind of mold growth , right ? And that low water activity Jambor is very , very low , based on the grains that we use and the sweeteners and the cooking that we do . So you don't necessarily need preservatives , because we don't have any . You just need to use real food that's formulated in a way that's extremely tasty , healthy and stable .
Speaker 1That's just amazing . That's why I'm not a food scientist . That takes a lot of brain power , I think , to figure that out . That's so amazing .
Speaker 2It's fun . I love it .
Speaker 1I really love it . Yeah , because you know , in the refrigerator you got your crisper drawer . I tend to call that the rotter , because there's more rotting that goes on in there than there is crisping of my fruits and vegetables . The lettuce turning wilty yeah , you pick up the cucumber and it's all water inside with the skin around it . You know so . So to think that you've , you're , you are able to create a product that is all natural , organic and have a shelf life of a year is just blows my mind .
Speaker 2That's just incredible you know , and we use a lot of real , real fruits . I look at your dried fruits , right dried fruits last a long time . Sure one of that idea dried fruits also have low water activity yeah you know , honey doesn't go bad ever , right , right . So look at it that way . It's because they have low water activity . There's nothing for the mold , is it any bacteria to grow on ? So yeah , and then the quality you need to make sure your quality of your ingredients is really really high yeah , that's just incredible .
Speaker 1And then you take half of what you make and give it away . That is there goes my brain again just blown , just blown away .
Speaker 2That that half of what you make , that is just my profits , yeah , yeah given to organizations that promote music and active living . So it you know it's a different business model , right ? It's a business model of giving back to community and promoting things you believe in which is to be active , right right To be engaged in the community , to be active to listen to your body , to train yourself , your body and your mind , and then bring music into your life in different forms , to bring joy back into your life .
Speaker 1Yeah , that's so commendable . I just can't even give you enough kudos for that . That's just amazing , and I'm sure my listeners are like being blown away too , because who gives 50 of their profits away ? You know , wow , and what made you decide to do that ? That you like that was the number . I mean I understand why , but why was that ? Why did you say , yeah , let me give 50 , there's some other companies in the past that have given away certain percentage .
Speaker 2Um , I want it to be meaningful . You know you could do two percent , five percent , but it's not really that meaningful with jam bar . It's very meaningful and I want consumers to feel like they can purchase a product that's making a difference in the world , that may align with their , their priorities of giving back and eating healthy and being engaged in a community . So yeah , it must be meaningful , not just an exercise of marketing . You know , it's actually meaningful .
Speaker 1Wow , that's fabulous . Well , thank you so much for that . I'm just blown away . I have nothing else to say Other than this goofy smile that's on my face and my eyes rolling back in my head , because I'm just so amazed by that . That's so great of you , thank you .
Speaker 2Well , you know , it's about my employees too , right ? So I came up with the concept my history I have a long history , of course , but it's about the people around you . It's about the people that make it happen , right ? I have a fabulous team . Like I mentioned , we make the product ourselves here in our plant . We have a state-of-the-art production facility , and it's the people here that care about the product , care about what we're doing . You know , they're all in . It's not just a place where they go to work . They actually really care about what they're doing and they feel , I think , blessed to be able to be and to work in a place like this .
Speaker 1Absolutely . Yeah , yeah , you don't hear that from anyone . You know that they're excited to be there and care that much about the product . That's rare . They are very blessed to have you as their boss , I'm sure . I'm sure I could line up every one of them and they'd go yep , definitely , that's really great . I mean , I've only known you for 30 minutes and I already have a piece of my heart , jenny . So what else would you like us to know about you as a runner , a musician , a boss lady with a fantastic product , or about the product ? What else haven't I asked that you would like us to know ?
Speaker 2I don't know . I guess just that you know . A lot of you know I started young , right . When I started I was just , I was still in college , right , and so starting industry in my mid , early mid 20s . And then , you know , fast forward 30 , 40 , almost 40 years later . It's just a long period of time to try something new , right . You can evolve as a person , start somewhere in your life , focus on things , think you're going to do this , do that . You can pivot , you can change and you can always find new passions and new ways of looking at yourself and reinvent yourself and figure out how you can make your life really meaningful . I think that's just a message that I would leave with people .
Speaker 1Yeah , so what are you going to do in 30 more years ? What's going to be the next reinvention of Jenny I ?
Speaker 2don't know , I'm still playing my music . I mean , I've worked really hard at becoming I would say I'm a good musician and I enjoy . I love playing with different bands and groups and things like that , so I focus on that . I'm a better musician , I keep focusing on it . The thing that's interesting is with sports you get older right Level 50 , whatever and you're not getting any faster . Your body starts to ache and you start to become more difficult to do what you want to do , whereas with music I started later , but it's not the same thing . You're not going to continue to improve . You can continue to improve in music forever , until you leave the earth . So that's kind of a nice way of looking at it .
Speaker 2It's like I can still do the athletics , but I'm not going to continue to improve For as music I am . So I kind of a nice way of looking at it it's like I can still do the athletics but I'm not going to continue to improve for his music I am .
Speaker 1so I kind of like that , that reminder that I'm working towards something and enjoying the journey as well yeah , for sure , and that's a really good point that you said , you know , because you started with the music later in life , and we should all reinvent ourself or find something that we've always wanted to do , and oh , I'm too old . No , we're never too old . So , yeah , that's so great .
Speaker 2Yeah .
Speaker 1It's really great You're never too old to you know .
Speaker 2it doesn't mean you have to be fabulous at it , it just means you have to look at it and think like , where's your , where's your part in it ? Right , you can always contribute somewhere and grow and learn somewhere .
Speaker 1So figure out your part , chase those passions Very cool .
