044: Grounding Exercises for Anxiety: Ayurvedic Rituals to Feel Stable & Safe | Root Chakra Ritual
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
If anxiety relief, genuine nervous system regulation, and a truly settled sense of safety feel just out of reach — no matter how much you understand about why you feel this way — this episode is for you.
Most grounding exercises for anxiety address the mind. Ayurveda goes deeper — to the body itself, the nervous system, the daily rhythm — as the primary site where real stability is built and where the root chakra is either nourished or depleted, one day at a time.
In Part 2 of our Root Chakra exploration, Ananta Ripa Ajmera — 10-time award-winning bestselling author, Ayurveda teacher, and founder of The Ancient Way — shares the specific Ayurvedic rituals she has returned to again and again across fifteen years of study and her own personal healing journey. Not as anxiety coping strategies to get through the day, but as devotional practices that, over time, teach the nervous system something it may have forgotten:
You are safe here. You are supported. You are held.
In this episode you will discover:
- Why feeling anxious for no reason is often the root chakra speaking — not a personality trait or a permanent condition
- How Ayurvedic rituals work differently from conventional grounding activities — and why the intention behind the practice matters as much as the practice itself
- Why consistent daily rhythm may be the most underestimated anxiety coping strategy available to us
- 3 grounding exercises for anxiety — powerful rituals you can easily incorporate into your daily routine
- What it feels like when the body finally learns — not just intellectually, but cellularly — that it is safe to be here

Welcome to True to Yourself — your soulful companion on the journey home to yourself.
I'm so glad you're here.
Whatever you're carrying today, whatever season you find yourself in — you're in exactly the right place.
Let's begin.
We began our Root Chakra journey with reflection.
We met Shailaputri — the daughter of the mountain, the goddess of the first chakra — and we explored five signs that your root chakra may be out of balance.
The chronic exhaustion that sleep doesn't touch.
The low-level anxiety that doesn't entirely belong to the present moment.
The feeling of never quite arriving in your own life.
And I invited you to do something unusual for a podcast:
Not fix anything yet.
Just see clearly.
Ask honest questions.
Notice what is actually there.
That was Monday's work.
Today, we go one layer deeper.
Because here's what I've learned after fifteen years of studying Ayurveda, Yoga, and Vedanta — and through my own deeply personal healing journey:
Seeing clearly is necessary.
But it's not sufficient.
At some point, the tree has to actually put down roots.
Not just understand why roots matter.
Grow them.
That's what Ritual is for.
In the Vedic tradition, ritual — or kriya — is understood as action taken with full awareness and clear intention.
Not habit.
Not routine.
Intentional, conscious, devotional action.
The distinction matters because the body responds differently to things done automatically versus things done with presence and awareness.
In Ayurveda, the intention you bring to a practice is just as important as the practice itself.
Today, rather than overwhelm you with a long list of things to do, I want to share three practices that I have returned to again and again — one for your body, one for the way you nourish yourself, and one for the rhythm of your everyday life.
These are simple practices.
But they are powerful because they send the body a very important message:
You are supported.
You are held.
You are safe.
These are the roots.
Let's grow them.
RITUAL ONE — Abhyanga
Self-Oil Massage
The first ritual: Abhyanga — self-oil massage.
If I could give you only one Ayurvedic practice for grounding the root chakra, this would be it.
In Ayurveda, oil is one of the most grounding substances available to us.
It is heavy.
Smooth.
Warm.
Nourishing.
These qualities directly counteract the lightness, dryness, and instability that often accompany an imbalanced root chakra.
When you apply warm oil to your body with slow, intentional strokes, you are not simply moisturizing your skin.
You are speaking directly to your nervous system in a language it understands:
You are cared for.
You are held.
It is safe to be in this body.
For root chakra grounding, I recommend sesame oil.
Warm it slightly before you begin.
Start at the soles of your feet and move upward.
Use long strokes on your limbs.
Circular strokes around your joints.
And spend extra time with your feet — because in Ayurveda, the feet are one of the primary places where we ground prana, or life force energy, into the body.
The entire practice can take just ten to fifteen minutes.
Do it before your shower.
And as you do it, this is the part that matters most:
Bring your full awareness to the experience.
Not as a beauty routine.
As a sacred act of tending to yourself.
Of all the Ayurvedic practices I have learned over the past fifteen years, this is one I return to most consistently.
It has transformed the way I sleep.
The way I recover from stress.
And the way I inhabit my own body.
It didn't happen overnight.
But slowly, through the quiet intelligence of repetition, this practice taught my nervous system what safety feels like.
If you only take one thing from today's episode, let it be this:
Start tomorrow morning.
Ten minutes.
And simply notice what begins to shift when you show yourself this kind of care every single day.
RITUAL TWO — Grounding Foods
Nourishing Yourself Through the Earth Element
The second ritual: grounding foods.
Have you ever noticed that when you're overwhelmed, you either reach for quick comfort foods — or you completely forget to nourish yourself?
Ayurveda teaches that food is one of the most direct ways we communicate safety to the body.
For the root chakra — which is governed by Prithvi, the earth element — the foods that nourish it are often the foods that grow closest to the earth.
Root vegetables.
Beets.
Carrots.
Sweet potatoes.
Parsnips.
Turnips.
These foods carry the grounding qualities of the first chakra, and incorporating them regularly is one of the simplest ways to support root balance.
Warm, cooked foods are often more grounding than cold or raw foods — especially when your digestive fire is just beginning to awaken in the morning.
A warm grain porridge with ghee.
A nourishing vegetable soup.
A bowl of kitchari made with split mung dal and basmati rice.
These are foods that nourish the body in the deepest sense of the word.
They remind the body:
There is nourishment available.
There is enough.
You are supported.
Warming spices amplify these effects.
Ginger kindles agni — the digestive fire — helping the body receive nourishment.
Turmeric supports healthy inflammation response.
Cinnamon brings warmth and steadiness.
And one herb I return to again and again for root chakra support is Ashwagandha — one of Ayurveda's great Rasayana herbs.
It supports resilience.
Nourishes the nervous system.
And helps the body meet life's challenges from a place of greater stability rather than depletion.
In our Circle of Life member library and Ayurveda Lifestyle Program, we have a full collection of grounding recipes organized by season and dosha, including healthier versions of many favorite dishes.
I'll link to it in the show notes.
RITUAL THREE — Consistent Daily Rhythm
Creating Safety Through Predictability
The third ritual: consistent daily rhythm.
This is perhaps the quietest ritual I'll share with you today — and one of the most powerful.
In Ayurveda, the body's deepest sense of safety comes not only from what we do, but from the predictability of when we do it.
The root chakra is governed by earth.
And earth, above all else, is consistent.
The sun rises at the same time each morning.
The seasons turn in the same order every year.
Nature does not constantly question whether it belongs.
Nature trusts its own rhythm.
And when we begin living in alignment with that consistency, the body learns something profound:
Things are predictable here.
I can relax my vigilance.
It is safe to be here.
One of the simplest ways to begin is by choosing a consistent time to wake each morning — ideally before or with the sun, during what Ayurveda calls Brahma Muhurta, the sacred hour before dawn.
Not because waking at 5 a.m. is inherently more spiritual.
But because consistency itself is healing.
Your cortisol rhythm.
Your digestive fire.
Your nervous system.
All of these systems are organized around patterns and expectations.
The body relaxes when it knows what comes next.
For those of you who recognized the first sign from Monday's episode — the exhaustion that sleep doesn't touch — this practice can be deeply transformative.
Not because you are simply sleeping more.
But because your body begins trusting the rhythm enough to truly rest.
Start small.
Choose one wake time and commit to it for seven days.
Even on weekends.
Notice what begins to shift.
These three rituals are not about creating another list of things you have to do perfectly.
They are invitations.
Small daily reminders to your body:
I am here.
I am supported.
I am safe.
Healing does not happen through intensity.
It happens through devotion.
Through small acts of love repeated over time.
The roots of a tree do not grow deep because of one great effort.
They grow deep because they return to the earth again and again.
And so do we.
If today's practices are calling you deeper — if you want a complete, structured pathway into Ayurvedic living, with seasonal recipes, daily routines, and a full library of grounding practices organized by dosha and chakra — our Ayurveda Lifestyle Program was created for exactly that.
This is the program we piloted at Stanford School of Medicine, and it carries a 99% overall recommendation rate from those who have completed it.

I'll guide you through a Root Chakra Release practice designed to help you reconnect with the deepest feeling of safety:
Knowing you are held.
Knowing you belong.
Knowing you are home.
Subscribe so you don't miss it.
Thank you for being here.
Stay true to yourself.
Namaste.
