Rewiring Your Subconscious Mind: Journey to Authentic Living
Ever catch yourself doing exactly what you promised you'd stop? Maybe it's falling off track with fitness goals, abandoning your spiritual disciplines, or self-sabotaging right before a breakthrough. The culprit isn't weak willpower – it's your subconscious mind running programs you never consciously chose.
Your subconscious beliefs formed long ago through childhood experiences, words spoken over you, and past traumas. Like hidden software, they silently dictate your reactions, habits, and decisions without your awareness. That tendency toward perfectionism? The people-pleasing? The fear of success that makes you quit right before reaching your goals? All stem from beliefs buried deep beneath your conscious thoughts.
I know this journey personally. For years, I struggled with the subconscious belief that any success I achieved was due to my appearance rather than my skills or hard work. That limiting narrative, planted in childhood, affected how I viewed my accomplishments well into my forties. Only by recognizing this pattern could I begin replacing that lie with truth.
The good news? You can rewire these beliefs. Start by becoming aware of your patterns through journaling your triggers. Replace lies with truth by asking "What does God say about this?" Regulate your nervous system through breathwork and grounding exercises so your body feels safe accepting new beliefs. And surround yourself with community and coaching that will support your healing rather than reinforce negative thought patterns.
You're not broken or unmotivated – you're just operating from a belief system that was never truly yours. This week, ask yourself: "What belief am I operating from that no longer serves me, and what truth do I need to root myself in instead?" Remember, you were divinely created for abundance and purpose. Welcome back to another episode of the Bite Size Podcast. I'm your host, lorraine Michaels, where we talk faith, fitness, functional medicine and life. Today I want to talk to you about our mind. I mean if you want to get a little nerdy it is your subconscious thoughts, your subconscious mind. And stick with me, this might be something that you don't normally talk about, maybe you're not familiar with, but it is something that we all have our subconscious mind and a lot of times we don't even realize that our subconscious thoughts are affecting our everyday life, our decision making. And so you might be that strong-willed, ambitious, successful person, but maybe if we peel back the layers, I shouldn't say but I will say and because you can still be all those things strong-willed, successful, high achieving and if we peel back the layers, you might be dealing with people pleasing or self-sabotage, or even the fear of success or the fear of failure, perfectionism or my favorite imposter syndrome. So today I want to talk about your subconscious mind and your subconscious thoughts.
Speaker 1:Do you ever find yourself doing the thing that you said you were gonna stop doing and yet you did it again? Maybe you're pulling away from God, or you started a new habit, strong, and then you kind of fell off. I know personally that used to be with journaling. I would be so dead set on journaling every day and I would be strong for a while and then I'd fall off. You choose the thing, whatever it is. Maybe it's you're chasing success and maybe you are achieving success, but you still feel empty inside.
Speaker 1:This is not about willpower. It's about your subconscious beliefs, and they're buried deep beneath the surface and you don't even realize that it's happening. So what is subconscious beliefs? What does this mean? Subconscious beliefs are something that you didn't choose, but it was something that helped shape you. Think about childhood experiences, things that people said to you about you over you, that people said to you about you over you, the words that were spoken over you, maybe trauma or past pain, hurts, repeated life patterns these are all the things that are circumstantial, that happened to you, that have now shaped your thoughts and now have shaped the way you view others, society, the world around you, and so they operate like a default programming system, because they're quietly operating in the background, dictating your habits, your decisions, your reactions. So that's why it's subconscious. It's not a forward facing, it's not, you know, your prefrontal lobe cortex. That is your decision making and it's in the front and so you make those decisions. But your subconscious is what? Those things you do innately right.
Speaker 1:So, for an example, if you were told as a child that you're too emotional, and now or then I'm sorry, you're too emotional, you always cry. Or someone said something over you that had to do about your emotions and you being too emotional, you might now suppress your feelings, suppress your emotions. You avoid being vulnerable, even maybe in your walk with God, or very close personal relationships very close personal relationships, because it was something that was said over you when you were completely vulnerable and at yourself, someone said something about the way you were and now you are no longer that. You're no longer that way. That's a subconscious belief. I know something that was said to me when I was younger was you know, just because you're cute doesn't mean you're going to get your way or you're not going to go far in life because of your looks. That has stuck with me and my subconscious belief that I have carried with me up until now, my 40s, that I really have to work on is that if I am successful or if I do get something or a promotion or a speaking opportunity or whatever it may be. Any level of success, I have to really work on the fact that it is not because I'm pretty or I'm in shape or whatever. It has no. So I really have to remember when any level of success happens, it's because I deserve it, because I worked hard at it, because I'm smart, because I deserve it, because I worked hard at it, because I'm smart, because I did it, because I have the skills. It has nothing to do with the way that I look and that was something that because it was spoken over me at a young age. Now I second guess it and I think you know well, was it because of that? So that's something that's a subconscious belief that I have had to work on. So how? Another other areas, on how they show up in your life today. I want you to think about avoiding hard conversations. Today, I want you to think about avoiding hard conversations, the fear of being too much overachieving just to feel worthy.
Speaker 1:Quitting this is such a good one, quitting when you're so close to that breakthrough. I know this is something that I have personally struggled with, also because there's a subconscious belief that I have to work on that. I don't deserve happiness or I don't deserve that level of success. And I have had to do digging to figure out why do I feel that way. Where did this belief come from? To figure out why do I feel that way? Where did this belief come from? Why do I feel like I don't deserve this level of success, or I don't deserve this relationship or this marriage or whatever. And I had to stop quitting before the breakthrough, because that is a level of self-sabotage when you do that, or feeling like you're not enough unless you're producing.
Speaker 1:I know so many people that are overachievers because of a limiting belief, a subconscious belief that they have that they didn't work through and they're on the brink of burnout or they have already burnt out because of this. And so with all of that, it actually does tie into your health, even with food and fitness. If, deep down, you believe that you're not worthy of being healthy or you're not worthy of looking a certain way, you're going to keep sabotaging your progress. You're not going to lose that weight because when you look at yourself, you see an overweight person or a chubby kid. There is that subconscious belief that has not been worked through or brought to your attention that it is there and you are self-sabotaging your progress, you are self-sabotaging the fact that you could be do whatever, because there's something in the back of your mind telling you that you can't or you're not worthy of it. And, friend, I want to tell you that that is not true. God created you for abundance, god created you for a purpose, and even though something might have happened to you or even though someone might have said something to you, that is not the truth. And so we need to work on the truth and rewiring our subconscious mind for the truth and so healing, healing the root so that you can get the fruit.
Speaker 1:Most women, people, they treat the symptoms, whether it be emotional, eating, lack of motivation, burnout. They treat the symptoms and not the root of it. But real transformation starts at the root. So, believing the good about you, believing the truth about you, the good about you, believing the truth about you, your beliefs, about your identity, your worth, your safety, these are all things that will help rewire the subconscious. It'll help rewire those thoughts.
Speaker 1:Functional medicine, spiritual health, both of these combined together equals powerful healing. And also it's rooted in Jesus right. Functional medicine, at its core, is really biblical, because we go back to the basics and we really do treat everything about it. To me at least, the way that I work with clients is biblically based, and so, at its foundation is truth. So, like I wouldn't treat your fatigue without asking why your hormones are off, or figuring out that your hormones are off, we get to the root cause of this.
Speaker 1:I'm not going to coach, I'm not going to coach you into purpose without helping you heal what's actually keeping you stuck Right? So, on the surface level, we're going to. We're going to ask ourselves okay, well, what are we struggling with? What do we see? Okay, now, why is that? And so we go to the why and we go a layer deeper. And so, with the subconscious and those beliefs, so, at the surface, what we see, well, I quit before I succeed, I stop before I get to the finish line. Okay, what are you believing about it? What do you believe will happen if you accomplish said goal?
Speaker 1:And then ask yourself that so, for instance, someone stopped the journey that they were on because the level of success that they were trying to achieve would mean that they would be in the spotlight, that they would be on the forefront, whether it be increased followers on social media, and they're going to be popular or have a million followers. They're going to be in the spotlight, and so the subconscious belief that we had to get to was that they were told that they you're too showy, that you are always, you always want to be the center of attention, and we don't want that in our family. You just need to be quiet and stay in the background and do what you're supposed to do. You don't need to be the center of attention. It looks bad, and so this person would always stop before they reach that level of success that they knew that they were capable of because of that subconscious belief. So we have to rewire that, and in rewiring that, we have to start telling ourselves the truth, and you have to make sure that your nervous system realizes that you are safe. Those are two big, big keys in that. And so how other ways that we can start rewiring these beliefs, first and foremost, is awareness. Start recognizing the patterns, start journaling your triggers.
Speaker 1:What are the things Do you stop before success? Another step in this is and I've said it before replacing the lie with the truth and ask yourself what does God say about this? That is like my top question about it. Whenever I'm dealing with uncertainty, or if it even is a truth or not. What does God say about this? Because God is truth.
Speaker 1:And then, third I don't know, I just touched on it is regulating your nervous system. You got to do that through breath work, through prayer, through movement, making sure your body feels safe. You know when you don't feel safe, you know when you're scared and your nervous system is in the fight or flight mode. So bringing it back down If you are short of breath, intense, doing things to regulate your nervous system by slowing down your breathing, telling yourself that you are safe. Recognizing I always do the senses. I express, what I smell, I say what I see, what is it? Touch, taste, see, feel. So I can feel my desk, I can smell my not my incense my essential oils, I can taste and whatever. It is just calming your nervous system down by recognizing the things that are around you and going through your senses, slowing down your breathing, doing box breathing I absolutely love that Grounding, journaling.
Speaker 1:And the fourth thing is community and coaching. Get yourself in the right community, people that are going to encourage you, that are going to pour truth into you, not that are going to sit there and have a little vent fest with you or play into the negativity or catastrophize with you. You need to find someone who is going to call you up, call you out and support you in your healing, who are not going to go down the rabbit hole with you and coaching. Find yourself a wellness coach. Find yourself a coach that is going to help you through this, that is going to bring this awareness to you, ask you the tough questions and get you to the place where you want to be. Who's going to keep your goals in front of you and hold you accountable to what you are doing or not doing in order to get there.
Speaker 1:Friend, I want to tell you you're not broken, you're not lazy, you're not unmotivated. You're just operating from a belief system that was never yours to begin with. And so what I want to encourage you to maybe journal this week. Ask yourself this question what belief am I operating from that is no longer serving me, and what truth do I need to root myself in instead and ask yourself the thing that you are doing, the thing that you're struggling with? So I started this episode off with talking about you doing. You did the thing you said you didn't want to do, right.
Speaker 1:So, whatever that is, whatever you have been struggling with, or you fall back to ask yourself, what if I didn't? If it's a people-pleasing problem, what if I said no? What would happen? Right, if it's a success problem, what if I accomplished it? What would that look like? And walk through it. And then if you find yourself, you know I'm uncomfortable or what will people think of me? Or people will think I'm a fraud, like all of these things. These are all external factors and we cannot control the outside. We cannot control the external factors, right? What is the truth behind it? Ask yourself the truth Journal about it. If this episode has helped you in any way, shape or form, I would love for you to let me know in the comments below. I would love for you to share it with someone that may need to hear it. And, as always, friend, I want you to remember that you were divinely created for a divine purpose. There's no mistake in you and there is such greatness in store for you.
