Speaker 1:Now let's dive in. Portia, I'm really, really excited to chat today, But before we chat, did you get your air conditioning fixed? I did get my air conditioning fixed. Oh my gosh, We're recording in the middle of I guess they would call this heat wave in Ontario, And today it was like what? 32?
Speaker 2:At least 32 degrees Celsius, And you didn't have air conditioning and that would just be like you and your poor dog It was hard, and I bake, so today I actually bake in the morning, so it was very stressful to figure out how, if my air conditioner wasn't going to be fixed today, how I was going to cool my house after my oven being on, and so that was a little bit nerve wracking.
Speaker 1:So did you come up with a solution? No, that my air conditioning would be fixed. Oh my gosh. I was just going to say like I'd be so curious of what this solution would be to like I'm thinking like big industrial fans and like something to blow the hot air out just for more hot air to come in, like realistically, but prices averted, and you and I both have big dogs, so like this temperature, like today, we went out for a W I can't even say the full word because she's right here, but we went out for a W and like she was really excited to come and I was like dude, you don't want to come on this because it's so hot, like you will not survive, it's so true, oh my gosh. Anyway, so I really wanted to have you come on the show and I will let you introduce yourself to everybody who's like who is this person that she's talking to? But I really I think I really wanted to have you on.
Speaker 1:Well, a number of different reasons. When we chatted a couple of weeks ago, i just really enjoyed our conversation, but also I just, you know, a lot of people feel like when it comes to wellness and when it comes to like being self aware. It's like once you've figured it out, then you don't have any, like blips or dips, or like once you figured it out, then everything's fine, and there's no possible way that you can be in a position again where you're like, oh my gosh, how did I let myself get here? But I think that that actually happens for a lot more of us than maybe people like to talk about, and I think it's actually more realistic to assume that there's going to potentially be really big ebbs and flows in the ways that we are aware, how we're taking care of ourselves, all those sorts of things. So, anyway, that's like why I wanted to have you come on the show, but I will hand the mic over to you to tell everybody who you are and introduce yourself a little bit.
Speaker 2:I'm Portia. I always struggle with these so much. I'm Portia. I'm the founder of the We Experience, i guess, first and foremost, and that is really just a place for women just to land softly and be exactly who they are in the moment that they are in. We're all about celebrating and supporting one another And our page is really about, you know, being seen and heard and loved without having to change, and so that's kind of, i guess that's what I guess, what I do In regards to me. I married, i have a daughter who's 15. I have a dog, and I'm currently have four little baby chicks living in my house And I'm super like, just for me, as who I am. I'm just super passionate about meditating. I'm really passionate about, you know, finding hobbies outside of work and outside of your business. So if I'm not in the way you can typically find me doing a puzzle, i make sourdough for friends and family and, you know, walking and meditating and being outside is kind of my happy place.
Speaker 1:Listen, your bread looks so good. I'm just like can I eat through this screen? I wish I lived closer to new market because I would be like hook me up, you're new market right Just a bit north of there. Yeah, yeah, okay, i was like I'd be like hook me up with some bread. Okay, so you said that you're really into meditating and being in nature and all those sorts of pieces which are like so great in terms of taking care of ourselves. But why don't you like where did your wellness journey kind of start? or like, how you know, take us back a little bit to like Portia, however many years ago.
Speaker 2:Okay, so Portia's been through a lot, a lot of different journeys. So I would say my wellness journey probably started when I took my yoga teacher training and my daughter was probably four at the time, so, and she was going into kindergarten or her second year of kindergarten, and so, yeah, it was about 10 years ago. I kind of took on that adventure And the main reason why I did it is I was struggling with anxiety with my daughter going to school. I felt like I was a little bit out of control. I didn't have a lot of control when she was at school and I found myself feeling really anxious.
Speaker 2:So that is where my journey began, as a yoga teacher, trainer and then kind of diving into the spiritual realm. It was something that I was not familiar with and it really intrigued me and I felt very at home in that space And that was really the jumping off point. I wasn't very much a person that liked to do a lot of movement or anything like that, and it really started to get the ball rolling and really started to open my eyes and open my minds to different things. From there I became a Reiki practitioner and I have my level two Reiki And that kind of opened up another door. It kind of opened up this different form of wellness that I was not necessarily aware of, like these energies that are in our bodies, like how amazing is that It is so amazing.
Speaker 1:It's so amazing And like one of the things that I find that I'm constantly talking about, because I think that like people forget, or we've been inundated for so long with like diet, culture, mentality, is that like wellness is so much more than just like what we're eating and how we're moving our bodies. Like those two things are incredibly important. They fuel our vessel and they like obviously take care of our mental health and stuff too, especially movement, but like spirituality and like tuning into energies and like being in tune with our body in like a spiritual way is also a part of it.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and so it kind of really started to guide me And I had an in-home spin studio, which was absolutely amazing. I did that for three years. It was so cool. It was one of those things where I convinced my husband to do this over a few beverages and I went and got my certification and literally two months later I bought bikes, set up my basement and we were riding.
Speaker 1:Oh my God, it was in, that's so cool.
Speaker 2:It started in April. first class was June. I think I started with two classes a week. By September, i think, i got to five And then, shortly after that, i think I was teaching 10 spin costs a week. It was insanity, but it was like the best kind of insanity because I was surrounded by so many amazing people. I got to meet people from very different walks of life and got to hear their stories and connect with them on such an intimate level, because we're in my basement There's like seven of us crammed in, sweating together, breathing together, jamming out. So it was such a cool experience.
Speaker 2:And from there I actually when I started that business it was called the Den and I had this like pretty cool social media platform and people would constantly be like Portia, can you help me? Like why does your platform look so good? Like what are you doing? And I was like I really don't know. I have a background in marketing. Like I kind of just have an eye for it. I really don't know what I'm doing, but they're like can you help me? And eventually I was like okay, i've had enough people asking me for help around social media website design that I was like maybe this is something that I need to pursue, and just at the end of, i would say, 2019 is when I kind of started taking on the social media manager kind of adventure And it started off as such an amazing journey.
Speaker 2:And I think it was amazing because I had the balance between the Den and the social media, so I really couldn't fully dive into the social media world And it was a place that I wasn't necessarily familiar with Before social media. I very rarely showed up online, like I had an Instagram account but maybe posted a picture four times a year. I don't even think I posted anything in a story And it was mainly just for the Den. It had its own page And once again, i was not even on there.
Speaker 2:The premise of the Den is very similar to the we experienced, where I'm kind of a little bit in the background and you as the community get to shine first And I'll kind of just pop out in the back, and so I just never really showed up there. And then, when I got into this social media world, it really started to grab hold of me And it took time. It took, i would say, about a year and a half before it really got its nails into me And I started to really feel the effects of external validation imposter syndrome and really started to actually lose myself during this incredible journey. And it's crazy because those that watch the journey outside, looking in it, looked like I was having a freaking blast. It looked like my world was just turned upside down and I was surrounded by all of this abundance, surrounded by all of this like amazingness, and my trajectory was cool, like I just skyrocketed in such a short period of time And it caught up to me very, very quickly.
Speaker 1:So you're a Reiki master, you're a yoga teacher, you have a spin studio and you're spinning. Were you the only instructor in your studio? Yeah, I don't know why I'm using air quotes? because it's your. You know why I'm using air quotes is because I call my basement my podcast studio.
Speaker 1:And so when you're like bikes in my basement, i'm like okay, but I mean that is still very much a legitimate business, as is my basement as my podcast studio, so I'm going to stop using air quotes about it, but nevertheless you're teaching 10 spin classes a week, like you're seemingly, like you said, from the outside really taking good care of yourself. You have all of these like tuning into yourself tools. Then you dive deep into this social media management and you burnt out pretty quickly.
Speaker 2:Yeah, So I sold the den about a year after I got into the social media. I knew that I couldn't balance the two anymore And with everything that kind of happened in the world, it just wasn't necessarily the same vibe And, to be honest, after not having people in my house for a good solid nine months, it was very, very hard to kind of open that door again. Like I got to reclaim my basement again And so it was just like it was really really hard to be like let's do this again. So I decided to sell it and then dive deep into the social media world and start creating a very small boutique style agency. And, yeah, about a year into it, I would say not even that much.
Speaker 2:Well, I would say after selling my business, I would say about a year into it, after selling the den, I really started to feel the burnout. I was feeling very isolated and lonely in it. I was once a person that was surrounded by seven people multiple times a week and just was like ingesting their energy and it completely stopped And I was sitting in my office alone five days a week. I was working longer hours than I ever had before. It took a toll in such a different way. Like spin yoga, It's a physical toll and it's a mental and spiritual toll, but at the same time it's very rewarding.
Speaker 2:Where I always found social media to be the reward of it was very short and it was never the same Like when I go teach a yoga class. I'm energized after that. But sometimes, getting off of social media after being on it for like two hours or even an hour, I'm so mentally drained And it just it really really caught up to me. I didn't have a great experience with a client. I think that really kind of was the straw that kind of broke the camel's back, that really opened my eyes to the reality of it all. And it was just kind of in those moments where I just kind of decided that I need to kind of take a few steps back and reassess the whole situation. And at the end of 2021 was when I dedicated a full year to my healing journey.
Speaker 1:My rediscovery journey. I should say Yeah, totally, and I remember like the key things, because, you know, some people will say I used to enjoy this and then I found I wasn't enjoying this anymore, or I used to like be this way, and now you know, people were saying to me, the people closest to me were like oh, like we noticed that you're not the same person anymore. What have you like? was there anything that kind of like? you said you had that interaction with the client, but how did you like? was there anything you could pinpoint? I guess it was like oh my gosh, like something has to change at the end of 2021 to then start that rediscovery.
Speaker 2:Yeah. So I was talking with my husband in the garage and I would say I'm a very connected person with myself, i'm very in tuned and over the burnout I slowly started to lose myself. I started to lose that connection and drift further and further away of who I was and what my goals were and what my definitions of success and happiness were. And I remember having a conversation with my husband, and I don't even know why it started, but I just looked at him and said you know what? I'm happy, but I've been happier and I want to be happier, like I'm done living the way that I'm living. I need something else. And that was kind of the kickstart, i think.
Speaker 2:Verbally saying it, i basically told the universe like, take, i don't have the courage right now to eliminate any of the things on my plate, can you do it for me? And in a matter of, honestly, a month and a half, a lot was eliminated and it was hard to swallow because, at the same time, as much as I wanted my business to continue to succeed and have this like up, like up, going momentum, it, it was needed. It was really, really needed. At the time. I needed, you know, the punch in the gut just to be like okay, portia, you have to slow down. You cannot continue to move at the rate that you're moving, because You know you're not gonna be happy in two months right.
Speaker 1:So like what was the first thing you did then? or like how did you start?
Speaker 2:I guess, other than the universe doing some of the work for you, i I Started to get some books and I thought maybe some like self-help books or personal development books would help. I found that to be very overwhelming. I was at a state where, once I kind of fully accepted where I was at, kind of everything started to shut down. My body started to shut down like I was eating all of the right things, i was taking all of the right supplements, i was working out six days a week, i had a personal trainer. You know, you know, according to the books, i was completely happy and I was like no more, no more, i'm done, i'm done.
Speaker 2:And listen to me, yeah, and, and one of the key indicators was I had a really low heart rate. So I got an on. My husband was so persistent on me getting this Apple watch and I finally got it. And then it was like Constantly alarming me when I would wake up because my heart rate would go below 30 beats a minute and I was like Almost dead when I was sleeping and and it would slowly creep into my life.
Speaker 2:I was very lightheaded, and so some of these subtle symptoms were kind of showing up, and So the first things I did was tried to get some self-help books and kind of figure out what was going on in my mind, but that was way too overwhelming. I was not in the place to take on anything. My mind was so foggy and congested, my body was so tired. I just it was like I was depressed, but it was like my body was depressed, like my mind was there and functioning because my cortisol was so high, but my body was. It was depressed, it didn't want to do the things that it wanted to do, like I was working out If for 50 minutes, and then, once I fully accepted the burnout, i couldn't even walk for 10 minutes.
Speaker 2:Wow and so it just was so crazy, i think, after I learned that the self-help books and the personal development books were not necessarily gonna work, i started to lean on things that I knew would help me feel better, and so, in December of 2021, i dedicated my. I dedicated 30 days to meditation, and So I started with my Peloton app and I started with like five-minute meditations. Ross Rayburn, he's the best on there If you're looking for like a nice spiritual guy. I'm Peloton, but I started with my Peloton app. I just sat in my office, you know, after my day, and just started meditating.
Speaker 1:What made you sorry, i'm just gonna interrupt because I'm curious like, what had you meditated previously before? I guess you taught yoga and stuff, but did you ever meditate yourself? and if not, then what like made you think I should try this? I?
Speaker 2:Try, i've never meditated before Teaching yoga. Like you get a little bit of meditation kind of at the beginning and kind of at the end in the show. But it's not necessarily the same thing. I I tried 30 days of gratitude to start and It was really really hard to find gratitude when I was so angry.
Speaker 2:Mmm it was really, really hard to be grateful for the things that were happening in my life when I was so angry at my body. I was angry at myself, and so I really don't know what led me to meditation. I I Honestly I think, Intuition.
Speaker 2:I think I saw it on my Peloton app and thought what, what could go wrong, like what would be the harm? and just starting at five minutes and and going from there. And I had a With my agency, i had a small team, and so I tossed it out to them and just said if you guys want to join me, join me on my 30 days of meditation. And I felt like that kind of helped me a little bit. I don't necessarily know if they ever did it, it didn't really even matter if they did do it, but it was just kind of like come join me on this little journey. And and, yeah, it just slowly blossomed from there and I started with five minutes. After two weeks, i think, i was up to ten minutes and then I slowly started to crave it because it was the only time where I could sit still with myself, even though my mind was consistently racing, even though I was super fidgety and wanted to get out of it. The moment I sat down, i always felt significantly better after the ten minutes, after the five minutes, and so the 30 days ended and then I didn't want to stop. So 30 days led to 60 days, which led to three months, which led to six months, which led to 365 days of meditating, and My practice kind of has ebb and flowed.
Speaker 2:You know, sometimes I meditate, meditate silently to myself for 20 minutes.
Speaker 2:Sometimes I need, you know, the support of a guided meditation to kind of hold me accountable, to tune in, and you know I'm just a firm believer that you know, meditation is for everybody.
Speaker 2:It's ultimately just finding the form of meditation Like I don't believe that meditation should be sitting in a quiet room on a cushion, cross-legged hands and laps, eyes closed, in silence, minimum 30 minutes, like that seems excruciatingly pretty, that seems like it would haunt me at night, like I couldn't imagine doing that, and to tell other people that that is why meditation is just seems ludicrous to me. And so I just found, like I said, like it changed my life. It changed my perspective on life. It allowed me to reconnect with myself, i think, in ways that I didn't even know existed. It allowed me to enjoy the silence and enjoy the stillness, which can be very, very hard, especially going from being very slow and intentional and then going into this hustle culture and hustling, hustling, hustling and then trying to then slow back down was really really hard, and so it was just. It's been such an amazing experience. I still meditate to this day.
Speaker 1:I meditate every single day now, what does your practice look like? So, if you're not sitting cross-legged on a little pillow in a corner with your hands in your lap, what does it look like for you?
Speaker 2:Some days it looks like that Yeah, you know what It changes? it changes on how I feel. So I have a lot of chronic pain in my shoulders. So sometimes sitting upright is just not feasible for me. If I work at my desk for three or four hours and then I think I'm gonna go meditate at that time, i just can't do that.
Speaker 2:I will then sit down. I'll then lie down on a pillow in my office floor, most likely with a guided meditation. especially if I'm feeling discomfort in my body, a good guided meditation will help me kind of come back in and less focus on that. Sometimes right now, i've been meditating a lot in the morning, getting up before I even exit my bedroom. I just kind of get up, go to the bathroom, make my bed, toss a pillow on the floor and just kind of sit on the floor and meditate before I actually go out into the world. And I find I originally started meditating in the afternoon because that's where I found I had time, and then I wanted to challenge myself to 30 days of morning meditation to see.
Speaker 1:Yeah, okay, I know what the difference was. When you said you do it in the middle of the day, I was like, oh, I just assumed automatically that it was something that you were doing in the morning, but I guess you can do it whenever it works.
Speaker 2:Sometimes I meditate in my car.
Speaker 1:Not while you're driving.
Speaker 2:Not while I'm driving. No, that won't be good.
Speaker 1:So how did the 30 days in the morning go?
Speaker 2:I loved it. I loved it. I was shocked that I loved it. I don't know why I was so shocked. I loved it because one I got it out of the way.
Speaker 2:As much as I love my practice, it doesn't always come naturally like I'm just gonna go meditate, like sometimes there's other things that I wanted to do more than meditate today. So I enjoyed that kind of component that I got up and it was done in my day before it even had started, already felt fulfilled. Yeah, like I've already checked the box off my list, i haven't even exited the room yet. So I really enjoyed that. It really set me up for the day.
Speaker 2:I found that I had more clarity, could handle more. That was in my life. Like I'm very much still trying to really understand my nervous system because of adrenal fatigue and because of the burnout I can like spike so high in just minimal stressful situations. So I found when I meditated in the morning it really allowed me to kind of level out throughout the day. It was really good. But I love you know I really started with meditating in the afternoon because I wanted a separation between my work and my life And I did not want to take my work into my life because that's what got me. That was one of the reasons that got me into the position I was in the first place.
Speaker 2:And I wanted that break And I wanted to be like my day is over. I'm letting it go here on my cushion in my office And I'm moving into the rest of my day, so I can be present with my daughter, i can be pressing with my husband And I can actually enjoy that part of my day rather than just like sludge through it going. Oh my gosh, i can't wait till this is over, when I can go to bed and wake up and have a new day.
Speaker 1:Right. So how then did the? because you mentioned at the beginning that you are the founder of the We Experience. So tell me a little bit, in somewhat of a nutshell, how like that came to be and what you're like now wanting to create for the world.
Speaker 2:Sure, So that started. Once again, everything has stemmed from loveliness I really want it sounds so sad, but it really did And in August of 2021, i, on the Lionsgate, i manifested doing a women's event. That's what is something I really, really wanted to do. You know, portia, 15 years ago, was the woman that wanted to do events And I had my daughter at 20 and that put a big pause on a lot of things, and so I really felt like that was my time to do that. And so in October of 2021, i announced that I was doing a women's event, but really didn't know anything else. It didn't have the We Experience associated with it. I knew I didn't want my social media associated with it, so I just kind of announced it, left it and let it do its thing And through meditation, oddly enough, the We Experience came and it had completely Of course it does.
Speaker 1:That is one thing like What's the word I'm looking for? That is one thing, consistently, that I hear that people say like when you? you know you said it wasn't often that I get quiet with myself, but when people do take the time to get quiet with themselves is when, like those creative like portals are open and all the like ideas, all the thoughts, all the downloads can come, and so that doesn't surprise me, that that's when it came to you.
Speaker 2:Yeah, so it was. It was. It was very interesting because I was getting a little nervous. I didn't have a name, i didn't know, like, what this event was going to be, where it was supposed to lead, and in the same notes that I wrote down this manifestation of the women's event, or an event, i would just continuously write down anything else that inspired me and got me going. So I actually wrote down the we experienced long before actually came to me. But I just remember meditating it all coming to me. I could feel it, i could see it And I just opened my eyes, immediately, grabbed my phone, opened my notes and there was the we experienced And it was just like this release, like I found it. It's here, and so that's kind of where it started.
Speaker 2:So we started in February of 2022. And we started with a blog where we share women's stories of, honestly, anything and everything. I'm a firm believer that every story is worth being told. It doesn't need to be the worst thing that has ever happened to you. It can be the most joyful thing that has ever happened to you. And then we involved into our women's event. So in October of 2022, i hosted 55 women at a event market in Newmarket for our first annual We Gather Brunch, which was just absolutely amazing. It still kind of is a little bit surreal. Even though it's almost been a year, it's still crazy that it had happened and it was something that kind of only lived in my head. It was a dream that I had and that I actually got to experience it and that other people, like 55 other women, got to experience my dream, yeah, outside of my head, which was so insane.
Speaker 2:And really the premise of our events is really to gather women together to connect and network, but also to feel inspired and empowered by other stories, because everything that we experienced meditation practices all stem from loneliness, and we can all feel lonely in any parts of our lives. Whether we are an entrepreneur, a mother, a sister, it doesn't really matter. There's always gonna be moments where we're gonna feel alone or that we're the only person experiencing it, and so the mission with the we experience is to let everybody know that they're not alone and that we all are experiencing it, maybe at different times in our lives, but we're here to pick you up and hold your hand and give you a hug and support you in a way that is right for you.
Speaker 1:Everybody appreciates support in different ways, and so, yeah, Is we an acronym for something, or is it we as in like? we the collective.
Speaker 2:So it's kind of I always say it has many meanings and it evolves just like us. So it kind of started as the we was women's empowerment.
Speaker 1:But then it That's what I had in my head. I probably read that and I was like now I'm pretending that I just knew.
Speaker 2:But it evolved as, like we, as a collective, us together, and I think it's that symbolization that the we experience is meant to be a collective. It is meant to be a community, a network that is evolving and that is growing, like that's the whole point. That's why I always say like the we is consistently evolving, because I'm consistently evolving and there's a part of me As we do as humans, yes. So I always think there's a part of everybody in that we And as you evolve and as I evolve, it evolves with us.
Speaker 1:Wow, okay, so is it a membership as well.
Speaker 2:There is a membership. So we have. We launched our membership last year and it's called the We Collective And it is really a place, It's kind of our intimate center. So if you really want to be a part of the We community, the membership is really where it's at. There we have master classes and it's really about a personal development membership.
Speaker 2:So you know, when I first started the We experience a lot of, you know, my friends and my network were a lot of women in business. But I really didn't want to hold into that kind of box. I really didn't want to niche down, you could say, into that, Because I feel that there's so many other women that need to be heard and to be seen and to be loved that aren't in that entrepreneurial box. So the We Collective is like a personal development membership clashed with a beautiful community of support, And so we have master classes that are led by, you know, experts and and other women that are passionate about what they are doing.
Speaker 2:So we talk about everything from breathwork practices to self love. We've talked about human design, we're doing EFT tapping all of these different modalities and tools that you can carry in your tool about when you are just rediscovering yourself, or you do find yourself, you know, at a position where you're feeling stuck and you need something to help you get through that. Because you know I meditate every day, but I've also do a lot of breathwork and I do EFT tapping. It's not something that I do every day, but it's I do it in moments of my life when I am needing something a little bit more. I'm needing that push and needing that to get out of whatever I'm in, whether I'm stuck in my head, stuck in my body stuck in my heart.
Speaker 2:So we have our master classes and we also have our monthly huddles where I'm kind of like, i guess, lead the pack in a way. But this is where we all get to connect with one another. So we always start the huddle off with checking in, checking in with ourselves, checking in with one another And seeing where we can support one another in these areas of our life, whether it's I need support in my business, can you share a post, or whether it's like can you hold me accountable? I really want to, you know, do a 30 day yoga challenge, but I'm feeling really insecure to get myself into the studio. Can you really push me to get me in there?
Speaker 2:And so we kind of start off with this collective conversation and then I typically have a topic that we focus on. So last month, in May, we talked about slowing down, because summer can be, you know, sometimes summer can be a little bit nuts for us And with summer being so short here in Ontario, canada, sometimes it feels like we need to go, go, go, and we never kind of really stop and slow down and enjoy, you know, until September, when kids go back to school And you're like damn it, what happened in the summer?
Speaker 2:Honestly, every single year, Yeah, so we have just we have amazing conversations and really help and support one another. there We have a library that's full of meditations and yoga classes and journal prompts to support you as well. But yeah, like that's just our little hub of you know, our intimate community inside of the we. That's so beautiful And to attend the events you do have to be a member or no?
Speaker 1:No, no members get perks on events. Yeah, of course.
Speaker 2:But nope, anybody can attend an event.
Speaker 1:Yeah, more, more the merrier.
Speaker 2:All are welcome. I will definitely share all of the information where people can find this out.
Speaker 1:And I think I might come to your brunch. It's enough. You do the brunches in the fall, right? Yes, yeah, so we're still. I'm still looking for a location and I don't have a date, but it will be in October, okay, cool. Well, people are going to go and follow.
