And I am here with O'Shea Murphy, filmmaker, actor, influencer, multi-talented man.
SPEAKER_00That's me, yeah.
SPEAKER_01How's it going, bro?
SPEAKER_00I've been going good, man. I've just been busy, been planning out more short films, more big films, more skits, more fun stuff. Yup, man, that's all I've been doing. I've just been planning, filming, and yeah, just living life. Main, man. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02You're a busy boy. And I guess like before we kind of kinda get to where you're um where you're at now, I always like to try and start a bit at the beginning. Because, you know, you I I see that you do a lot of uh lot of acting, like professional stuff. You do, you know, you have all your skits. People mostly know you from the social media. But um why get into doing acting and get into doing skit making, content creation? Like when did this all kind of become a thing for you? So um the question is like, how did I get into acting? No, just I I think just when did all of this like like it did not just have to be acting, but it even for your um skit making skit making content. Did that was that first or was acting first?
SPEAKER_00It was it was acting first. It was acting first, yeah. Um so the reason why I I've been doing skits is because of acting. It's like the closest I can um do as an you know as an actor to like um how to make my own skits or like you know make my own films pretty much in a way. Yeah, and um I looked at other people doing like those acting skits, so I was like, oh I want to give this a try. One blew up, boom, and I just I just kept going. But like it all started because I was interested in acting. Um why am I interested in acting is because when I was eight years old, my mum asked me, Oh, do you want to get into acting classes? I was like, Oh yeah, sure. I I didn't know acting back then or or what it was about, uh, but that was a fail because she never took me to any acting classes, but it got me curious. I was like, Oh, what's acting all about? Like, how can I get into it? And um long story short, I never been to an acting class. I just um I I just learned by myself in my room, or like I practiced some lines with some other people, my cousins, uh and yeah, and then I found social media. I've I actually first started on YouTube, by the way. On YouTube, yeah.
SPEAKER_02I I saw a skit on there from like eight eight, nine years ago when you're very little.
SPEAKER_00That was actually my first like actual acting video I've done. Oh, yeah. Um, I did that, I was like, oh, uh I kind of like this. So I made a bunch of like long form skits on YouTube, but um unfortunately I put them on private because they were all cringe. Um, yeah, I'm never looking back at those, but there'll be more coming on YouTube. Surely one day you'll get them out. Surely one day you'll get them out.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you'll probably get over it by what's up.
SPEAKER_00I'll react to I'll react to some of them. Yeah, yeah. For sure, for sure. And then yeah, uh, it was YouTube, and I found out that TikTok was a thing. Me and my cousin downloaded it for fun, and then I just started posting. Um I didn't even like I didn't even like get my followers because of my skits. I got my followers just for doing random cringe stuff, but um I then found out about skits. I was like, oh yeah, that's right, I'm into acting. So I just like you know, I just I was like you can use it to benefit what you want to do for your future. Yeah, exactly. I got it, and I just had fun with it. I was just like, oh man, I love acting. Um I might as well just make my own movie. So yeah, I just I just made a bunch of skits. That's cool.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you've made so many, but it's it's crazy. I mean, because on um on um because all of them are mainly on TikTok, right? Like are all of them that like uh is it all the same across the platforms from TikTok to Instagram to the same. Oh it's all the same, it's all the same now, yeah. Yeah, it's all the same now. Um Do you reckon you must have like 500 videos or something, right? On TikTok?
SPEAKER_00I think I think I do. I think I do, yeah. Wow. Cause um well, what is it? I made I made one video and it went viral, right? And then I was like, oh, I want to make another one. That popped off as well. And then I just kept I just kept on going like every day because I pretty much had no life. I was like in high school, I think, and I had nothing else to do but study. But um I just I just posted I just posted every day. I was like, um, okay, and then it became a habit. That's why I have a lot of videos. Yeah, nice.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you didn't realize you're getting into yourself into good habits. Yeah, exactly. Oh, that's good. No, awesome, bro. Yeah, because um one of your skits that really stood out to me that cracked me up was that uh the teacher walking into the classroom skit. You know, like like the it's like a it's like the teacher in the uh like no not not the teacher who's taken the class. Oh wait. There's a recent one that you did. The teacher that goes into the classroom for no reason. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Oh man.
SPEAKER_02And that I don't know if that's like a New Zealand because I just was like, wow, that that really takes me back to school because that just happened a lot.
SPEAKER_00I wasn't targeted uh for only New Zealanders, but like it did it did happen to me a lot in school.
SPEAKER_02It just that reminds me the teacher just sits there and just like wants to take out their day on the kids who are talking in the back or something.
SPEAKER_00I know, just goes into the classroom and just stands there, right? Yeah. Waits for the teacher to stop talking and be like, Yeah, yeah, yeah. The whispers, they don't talk loud, man.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. That's funny. No, I enjoyed that. Because I know you do have like you've kind of moved a different profile for more of your Kiwi skits as well. Because yeah, I think a lot of I think you would have started making more New Zealand humour, and then now you're probably trying to branch you've been trying to branch out, right? Trying to make a bit more global stuff. Nice. Yeah, the New Zealand it's interesting with like Kiwi like stuff, because every like sometimes I think we don't realize we're bigger than we are. And you probably have found that when you've put out some videos, yeah. And there'll be like people from all over the world probably, you know, well they have, they've watched it, and then you'll be like, oh, how does this person all the way over in America or Canada or other side of the world? How do they understand this? And then they get like they get interested to know like they want to learn about it, they want to understand like because our humor's like really dry. Like, you know, like um it's it's it cracks me up because we're we're very sarcastic. We kind of took that English humour, but made it I think we like double downed on like the what's it called? Like like talking down about ourselves and then just being like real minimal and like super sarcastic. Yeah, it's just like a news the New Zealand flavour. It's like one thing that I always found interesting. Did you ever watch Fly of the Concords? No, dude. No, I haven't. Oh, you haven't watched that? No. You know Jermaine Clement? Uh Brett. Yeah, yeah, uh, the one on Moana, the crab. Uh I think yes, he did the voice. Yeah, yeah. Ah, right. Yeah. Well, you should check out Fly of the Concords. Um, if you're because that was one of the first New Zealand shows that like it's uh about this like New Zealand music group, and they it got really big in America, like the TV show itself. Um you know, who had Reese Darby. That's how Reese Darby got famous as well. Well, pretty much got uh initially. Um haven't heard of that, that's crazy. Check out Five the Concords. Um and um but my point I was trying to get at there was that the humor's really dry and the songs are just super like you know, New Zealand content kind of oriented, yeah, like quite silly, super sarcastic, and it blew up in the States back in like the 2000s. Is it a States show? Nah, it's a TV show. It was it was on HBO and everything. Oh, yeah, yeah. I'm gonna go check that out. Yeah, really I can't rec I reckon you'll like it a lot. It's very funny. But um, it's just interesting, like just again talking about New Zealand humour translating overseas. I think we get surprised. I mean, you can even save like for Tykaway TC stuff that he's put out, even like putting in like Avenger movies, like you know, with like he's directed, he direct directed an episode of The Mandalorian, and just putting in some of that New Zealand humor. Um, what was that character in um what was it? The four was it Ragnarok, was it that movie? Uh what was the core core?
SPEAKER_00Yes, the character, eh, yeah. Yeah, but again, it's like it's like the accent. It was too much, it was too much. I was like, oh my D's. I know uh I know the accent, but like I don't know that accent. That's that's way too much.
SPEAKER_02But that's what he does though, because he's if you've seen like any of his movies like Boy or like he just really turns that on, you know. But um, but I I always I just found it bizarre that it would translate to a world the world audience, like global audience. I know you just I just it's so niche. Yeah, you know, we're a small country, especially boy, like boy, yeah. How did boy and even um a bit of an older one? Um Whale Rider. Did you think? Whale rider, yeah. I love that movie. But that also translated, like that's like very New Zealand specific, you know, Mori history. Like, wow. So yeah, I I think we've got to pick ourselves up more. That's what I think.
SPEAKER_00And then she managed the main character on Whale Rider, she managed to get on to Game of Thrones.
SPEAKER_02Uh I don't know. See, I've got I'm pretty sure she did. I've got her image stuck when she's a kid from that from that. So I don't actually really know how she aged. Oh, yeah, by the way. She probably did.
SPEAKER_00If you guys um if you guys are like wondering, oh why do I do New Zealand content? It's because that's the only thing I I know. I I've never traveled, and like um I I just wanted to like make something that happened in my life. So um I made a skit based off what I experienced in my life, and apparently a lot of people related to that video, so I just kept making more that you know um that I've experienced in my life while being in New Zealand because I've never left New Zealand, man. So you've got you've never traveled, never traveled. I've I've I've traveled all of New Zealand, just never outside of it.
SPEAKER_02Wow. Not into Australia or anything like that, or the Pacific Islands or anything.
SPEAKER_00Nah, I've I'll definitely do that soon though. Yeah. Definitely do that soon.
SPEAKER_02Nice. I highly recommend it, man. Um, yeah, good to get out of this. Wow. So you haven't felt the is there a word for it? Like just New Zealanders like because most people just want to get out of here as fast as possible. Well, now I do.
SPEAKER_00It's just because like all my family is here, right? I have no one outside of New Zealand, so I never had the interest to like travel. Sure. Yeah, that's why, but like now I I really want to go. I just I want to get out of here. And get out of New Zealand.
SPEAKER_02You and everybody, like most of this country, eh? Yeah, record numbers flying over the seas. Yeah, it's but it's pretty wild. It's pretty wild. I know, man. It's uh it's a crazy time we live in here. Um, so let's talk about so people probably would mainly know you for your from your skits, your humour, comedy. But you do actually do serious acting. Yeah. So I did actually watch your recent short film you put out, Nowhere Safe. Yeah, nowhere safe. And I uh yeah, I uh did I was I really enjoyed it. Yeah, it was dark. Um I had it was very it definitely for me felt like uh something I reckon a lot quite a lot of people can relate to. And uh had a few familiar faces who've been on the podcast maybe before.
SPEAKER_00Hey yeah, man. I just I I just grabbed them off your podcast and put them on my film. Hey, no, but but um uh that film, so uh the reason why I like I knew how to act in it was because it's kind of like most of it is based on my life, except for you know the really serious parts. The gun maybe not the gun. The gun, the stepdad. I I've never had a stepdad, but like I just added that in because um The heroine was it based on heroine? No, it wasn't.
SPEAKER_02Uh like the girl on the couch. Oh, maybe I misread that. So it might have been me misreading.
SPEAKER_00Oh, the um Heresy. Heresy. Heresy. That's the other short film I was in. Yeah. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Um but uh yeah, it was kind of based on my um like like the the press side of things is is kind of based um on a true story on my life. Uh, but um yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna keep those up. Hope you guys hope you guys enjoyed it though. Go look it up. Nowhere save short film by O'Shea Murphy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I I um definitely like the bullying part, even like, yeah, because that reminds me like a little bit of like school and stuff. Like it's funny when you get older, because like when you're like kids are like mean as they like that kids are so mean. Yeah, you know, they are especially when you're like in your teenagers and stuff, and it's sort of it's really it's like one thing. I think a lot of people like most people we have to you have to grapple with it. And as you get older, you can just tell people to kind of piss off. But in school you can't, you know. It's like you're there every day, or you're on the way to school, and uh that's that can be tough. So some of those moments I was like, damn. But no, I did really well, bro. So you're gonna do more of those you want to try and And this episode is sponsored by me. Do you struggle with sleeping and particularly struggle with light and sound while sleeping? SPEAKER_00Uh I actually have some planned out. Um will be will be coming soon, don't worry. Uh yeah, I just need uh we're going to be filming some more. Um a month after this, right as we speak, I'm gonna be filming another one. But also uh since like Marshall films have been like so like oh like it's been so short, I'm gonna try to expand it and expand it to the point where it's like an actual movie. So I can actually enjoy my shall film or like enjoy my movie. I want to enjoy it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Because uh even to go into a short film, I mean how long was that when you did six six minutes? Oh eight eight minutes thirty seconds. Eight minutes thirty seconds. Cause even to do eight minutes thirty seconds, it takes a lot of time to get it to that level, you know.
SPEAKER_00It was it was originally going to be 15 to 20 minutes long, but like we'll we had to cut out some long as scenes uh because it didn't really fit the story, and then yeah, it um it went down to eight minutes thirty seconds. But um well I'm definitely I definitely want to make like longer films.
SPEAKER_02More similar tone, you want to do more serious ones, similar tone, yeah. Um you're mixing it up more comedy in the future.
SPEAKER_00I can actually say this because um right now I I just want to get all the sad films out because I've written a lot, and uh after the sad films have been dropped, um I'm going to be I'm really into the plot twist there. Oh yeah, I really love plot twist films, so I want to I wanna really make mine. And um the one like my dream film to make is like a horror found footage. That's that's my dream film to make. Yeah, Blair Witch, Blair Witch, exactly. Like that's that's my dream film.
SPEAKER_02That's scary, that one. I saw that a little bit when I was younger. But what was crazy about it was no one had done it before. Have you read much about like the phenomenon when it came out? And everybody thought like because they'd made a website and everything, and they had a contract and all that kind of stuff. Um people made it seem like it was actually real, yeah. And then as I was like, wow, that's like the first time it was ever done. They're not. The camcorder, the first one of the first camcorder movies, I think.
SPEAKER_00And then that's how I think they made the paranormal activity, yeah, all that kind of stuff. Uh, but I don't know that in the Blue Witch they had no scripts, they were just like improvising there was no scripts at all, no scripts, um which which blows my mind. I'm like, wow, yeah, uh so all their screams was real, all real. They had minimum food, they were in the forest, the director was um messing with them the whole time, which yeah, which is I think Blair Witch would be one of my best found footage films.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, one of your favourite ones, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the franchise I really love is How House. I don't know if you guys have seen it, but um, I really love How House. That's that's my best one. Um it's a found footage for about like four movies, but then the one that's coming out this year in 2025 um is not a found footage, which kind of sucks. That's it's bad. I hate it when like they go from found footage to like an actual film, like of those high production uh over-the-shoulder shots. I'm like, what are you doing?
SPEAKER_02Just keep it, just keep it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, just keep the cam cool. What are you doing, man?
SPEAKER_02I think one of my um I haven't seen this movie in a while, and I talked about it on here before. I can't remember who with, but um one movie I reckon you should check out is um it's called Behind the Mask. I don't know if you've heard of that. No, I haven't. Uh it wasn't it's not like a super big one, but it was very clever. It came out in the it must have been 2006, a little fuck a long time, a little while ago. But um, it was based upon like a world where like Friday the 13th, Halloween, and Nightmare on Elm Street happened. And it's this lady uh like interviewing this guy who talks about being a serial killer and how to be a serial killer, and then it's kind of like interview footage, you know, not found footage, but like interviews for a while, and then eventually I don't want to spoil it, but then it turns into a proper horror movie. Oh, like um like a proper one or like a found footage one? No, it sounds in it turns like so it's all the interview footage and like back and forth for a bit, and then at one point it's what it's just changes into like a proper horror film like production. Oh but it's horror film production, so it's not super fancy. Yeah, yeah. But it's like it's it's very clever. So I recommend that one. Behind the mask. Check that out. I'm gonna check that out, man. Yeah, that's a cool one. Yeah, I'm I'm actually a bit of a pussy when it comes to horror films, I'll be honest. Really? I used to hate them as a kid. I used to really hate them. Nightmares, the whole works. Yep. Yeah, just too real for me. I don't really know why. Maybe it's active imagination or something, but I actually got a horror movie.
SPEAKER_00I actually got a horror movie that like gave me nightmares for so long, man. It's the paranormal activity. I th it first one, third one, I think. Okay, I think, but um, it's the one with the two girls. Okay. Two girls, yeah. Bro, that I'm not gonna lie, that one gave me nightmares to the to days, bro. Days, months, probably like over a year. Because like, um, there's this one scene in it where like they're in the bathroom, the girl in I think it's the dad, I think it was, or I haven't seen it. I haven't seen it. Oh, you haven't seen it.
SPEAKER_02I told you, man, I'm a pussy, I don't watch those movies.
SPEAKER_00I've seen bit I've seen bits of them. You're probably not gonna watch this, but I'm gonna tell the audience. Yeah, go, go. Uh, there's a scene where like I think it's it's the girl or the dad. I think it's the dad or the uncle, but like it's the girl and that um and the guy, and they're in the bathroom, they're scared because they saw something in the mirror. They went to go, open a door, bro, everything's going around like freaking um freaking like stuff getting chucked by like ghosts or something like that, bro. That freaked me out because like I had nightmares today's where um where I was in the bathroom myself, and then I go into my room and everything's going around, and I look around, or uh um, so I don't look behind me, but I can hear someone running after me. Yeah, that happens so many times, man. And then I just wake up from that and um yeah, I I I I'm just too used to horror movies now, eh? It's just it's just a habit now. Yeah, you cannot freak me out. Damn. Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02I remember as a kid, it that reminds me like um when uh I'd be in like the garage and then I'd go upstairs, and I remember like it was night time, and you turn off all the lights, and then I'd run up this corridor, and just like I've seen those skits of people like who make fun of this. Because I thought it was just me, but it's like people who like turn off the light and have to run up the stairs because I feel like a monster's behind them. Oh yes. And I I I get that I used to get that feeling a lot when I was younger, but yeah, not so much now. Like, I think the last horror film I watched was a while ago, it might have been it. Um I watched that, the new one. Um, and that was actually really good. Actually, it had a good story, so I actually quite enjoyed it. Chapter two? No, the third the uh chapter one. Chapter one. Yeah, I enjoyed that one. That was really that was good. That was cool, yeah. Yeah, good story though, because a lot of horror films at times like stories not like that great. It's generally just there to like freak the shit out of you or something, jump scares and stuff, and I don't I I don't need the jump scares in my life.
SPEAKER_00Have you heard the new one that's coming out?
SPEAKER_02Nah.
SPEAKER_00Uh uh the third one?
SPEAKER_02Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00I reckon I reckon Pennywise in the new movie that's coming out is way more serious than than the other two movies. Way more serious, less of like cheekiness, yeah, yeah. Dragging it out and more like just going for it. Pennywise just going for it, man. Like I I can't wait till the film's out, man. Can't wait. What do you and this is just kind of random, but what do you reckon our obsession is with horror films? My obsession Is just like I don't know I might be possessed or something like that. I might be just into ghosts. I might be just like I don't know, like um is it the paranormal that interests you, or is it like uh just the idea of getting like scared? Yeah, I need to feel something, man. I need to get jumped, I need to like just get freaked out and um I cannot watch horror movies in daytime, only in night times. Right. You wanna feel it. I wanna I wanna really feel it, man. That's why yeah, that's why I love it. But like I don't just watch any horror movie, like I'm kinda like not a it's it's kind of not a for me for the high production ones. I really love the fountain footage ones. That's that's what really gets me because like feels real. Yeah, it feels real. For example, like let's say you have your phone on you, right? And you're just walking into a house and like you know, ghosts are there, yeah. Yeah, yeah, that's what it feels like.
SPEAKER_02True. That reminds me again of a video I saw of this, like this guy who I was on his um Instagram channel or whatever. He went he goes and explores like abandoned, scary uh buildings or abandoned places, and he'll put he'll put on music, he'll like like he'll just play like he'll be like, oh, exploring these scary places, but I feel better because I'm putting on like Miley Cyrus or something. So he walks into these places like blasting Miley Cyrus at like full volume. Who's this? I have to find the I can't remember the guy's name, but it was super funny. Um just like cracked me up because I'm like, oh yeah, I probably feel better. You go to these like scary ass places, and it's like, yeah, you got you just got like you got the best of both worlds, and you're like, oh, this place ain't so scary.
SPEAKER_00And you're not even that scared until something actually happens.
SPEAKER_02And then you got the Yo Boom still going, like running away, like and they're about to die of getting chased with Miley Cyrus in the background. But yeah. Oh yeah, oh yeah, horror films. Oh, cool, man. Um do more of that in the future. Um I think something else, uh, another skit I watched of yours that uh I I think about this quite a lot as well. Was I think it was your Superman skit that you did with PK. Oh and uh like like the car gets like flipped up and damaged, and it's like, oh crap!
SPEAKER_00Like, ah goodness. You really did some you really did some boom scrolling on my page.
SPEAKER_02Hey, you got a lot to do scroll on. You got a lot of hey, I have to do some research, right? But I enjoyed that because it's like it cracks me up because like we watch these movies and uh all the damage that gets done and buildings blowing up, and it's like ah, like what about the insurance claim for that? It's like you know, reality, right?
SPEAKER_00It's just cracks me up. I didn't really see that as a kid, but like now. Now you're older. Yeah, I'm just like, oh my, so much destruction, yeah, um chaos. Yeah, throwing a car for no reason, it's um smashing into buildings. But we actually made that Superman video, like I think it was before, like straight before the um Superman movie came out. Uh and I reckon like I was thinking, I was like, oh, we should make this, we should make this because like I I'm really into DC and like a new Superman movie's coming out. Oh heck yeah, and then um and then I had the thought, I was like, oh yeah, what does Superman always do? Oh yeah, cause destruction everywhere. Causes more destruction than defeating villains. Yep, yep. It's like every superhero, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so much property damage. I know a lot of property damage. Luckily we don't have that in New Zealand because we ain't got no money, man. We're broke. Exactly. So all that property damage, we can't even fix our um uh we can't even get our bloody like um the the rail done in the city. It's been going for like almost 10 years now. That's crazy. Damn. I know. Yeah, and uh it's like um getting the central the centre link, sorry, the central link in the city. That's been going, bro. I've that's been going for so long, it's just like ridiculous. It's like it's like the it's like the it's like on the uh Takanini and like by the motorway, oh yeah Forever, never finished. We do not talk about that motorway. I actually don't know. Oh I'm surely if it is it'd be a big celebration, right? Yeah, yeah. Auckland, the land of road cones. Oh, the cones, man. Don't get me started with the cones. Nah. But it's uh yeah, I mean, it's it's it's just like I don't know why we can't seem to get things done. Yeah, we seem to do quite well at this.
SPEAKER_00Like, bruv, like in New Zealand, there's uh there's construction and there's the cones, and there's after the construction, and then they leave the cones. It's like why are you putting cones down when there's no construction happening? Like, you know, um, finish the job, guys. Yeah, exactly. Pick up roads all done, pedestrian is all clear. It's like um, oh mate, just move the cones a bit. Um, I actually done that. I actually like um I was driving and then a cone was in my way, like slightly in my way, so I got out of my car and then I moved all the cones to the side because like um uh they'll put it back when they come back for construction. But I really, I really dislike the cones in New Zealand, man. Really dislike them. It grinds your gears. Yeah, stuff the cones, man. Stuff the cones.
SPEAKER_02I mean, stop, stop the cones. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The cones. The cones. Oh man. Yeah, New Zealand, eh? I was um, since you've done so many like skits about Kiwis and in New Zealand, I know you haven't really travelled, but what like what would you say like uh are traits like Kiwis have that like only we have compared to other people? Can you comment on that? Because you've done so many New Zealand skits and so many things about it. Is there things that we do where you're like, oh, only we do that? We have culture, tradition.
SPEAKER_00We have tradition, we have family. No, I don't know. Uh uh I'm I don't know. Give me examples.
SPEAKER_02Well, I I guess like you could uh I guess an example would be something that we only do. Is um it's like I guess there's the slang part. Yeah we have we have very special like specific slang, not even Australians understand it. Yeah, um I think the other part for me is like in New Zealand, like we are too humble, where it just gets a bit silly, I think. Um because my example of this is um I can't remember if I've said it on here before, probably. But it was uh the the um the 2015 Rugby World Cup, and we won that. I think was it Australia in the final, if I remember correctly? We doubled the points, it was our second time winning in a row, no one had done it before, and then it was like wow, this big moment in like for New Zealand winning Rugby World Cup second time in a row, and everyone on the microphone was like, Oh yeah, we did alright. And I'm like, guys, like at all the times to celebrate, can we celebrate this once? Just say we're great, like just say we're great, yeah, you know, but I've that's just a random example I can pull off the top of my head, but it's just like yeah, sometimes like too much humble pie, I think.
SPEAKER_00Oh, we appreciate um the achievements that New Zealand people do. Like, for example, if there's like a massive act or something that's achieved like to be in a big movie or create a big movie with massive international success. International success.
SPEAKER_02Everyone loves that in New Zealand. Um which is also kind of annoying because it's like we don't appreciate people we've got everyone's like, oh, why would you go and do that? And then you go make a name for yourself somewhere else. Like, oh wait, come back, like you're ours, come back, come back.
SPEAKER_00It's like um, it's like, oh what are you doing? Oh you left New Zealand, oh what are you doing, man? Um and then you do something well, you're like, What? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Exactly, exactly. That's a Kiwi thing. I don't know if that's just a Kiwi thing.
SPEAKER_00There might be other countries, but that is a yeah, there's definitely something we appreciate um our name being said outside of New Zealand. Uh like New Zealand. People just saying New Zealand outside of New Zealand. Like, we appreciate that. We're like, oh yes, we're known now. We're known. We're um, yep. People see us, and sometimes we're not always on the map. Sometimes, yeah. Yeah, we're not always on the map. I mean, we're like so small, bro, to the point where like, yeah, it's it's fair, it's fair.
SPEAKER_02I don't really mind it. Um these days I quite prefer us being left off the map, if I'm being honest.
SPEAKER_00No way. Like I'd rather be left off the map. Um, actually, there was a few. Um, have you actually heard of my second account, O'Shea the Second? I've heard of it, I haven't I didn't check it out. Uh so I made a video on there um speaking oh, because a couple of people in like America or like just anywhere outside of New Zealand were saying like um if a World War III were to happen, New Zealand is the safest country. And then I replied to us saying like something. Oh, don't I think I actually did say this. You saw that? I think I did. You're like, no, man. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Come on, come. What do you say, man? What are you saying? Also, now you guys know us because we're the safest country if there's a world war three. Come on now. Yeah, come on. Please don't come. Yeah, because it's gonna we're already as populated as as we are, man. Like, how how much are we? Like five million. Five million people, man. Look, look how small our country is. Like, it's just don't come here, just stay stay in your country. Stay where you are.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's what I think as well. Um, speaking of uh your I want to talk about your YouTube, you have uh a quote on there, which I found quite interesting. Dreams are worth nothing if left on the pillow. Where did that come from?
SPEAKER_00Uh um so I was crying one night. That's I can be real. No, yeah. This was when I was in high school, man. I had my first breakup with a girl, and then um I was like, you know what? I'm really into acting. Oh, what was a quote again? I forgot. Sorry? What was the quote? Uh dreams are worth nothing if left on the pillow. Dreams are worth nothing but left on the pillow. I think I stole that from Google. So um I I was I was so I was I was a bit sad, and um, I was like, oh, what's a good quote to say, or like what's a good thing to remember in my mind, so I can like stick it on my mind and remember it. Um so I went onto Google, I was like, quotes for yeah, just quotes, and then I saw that quote, and that standed out to me the most, which was um dreams.
SPEAKER_02Dreams are worth nothing.
SPEAKER_00If dreams on the pillow, nothing but if left on if left on the pillow. If left on the pillow. Man, I even forgot my own quote. Look at that. I need I I might need to change it. So it came from a breakup. Yeah, it came from a breakup, and then um She wasn't the dream. Yeah, oh actually, uh uh wait, it came from a breakup. Yeah, yeah, it came from a breakup, and then um I did that quote, and then I got a new girl, and then I completely forgot I posted that on my on my YouTube. I uploaded that on my YouTube. I wasn't my cover, yeah. My YouTube banner. It's still there, still a YouTube banner, yeah. Yeah, I completely forgot about that, and then um now you're speaking about it, but I even forgot a I forgot about it before he even asked me. I was like, oh mate, yeah. Um, well, yeah. That's a cute quote. Yeah, follow your dreams, man. Follow your dreams. I've left on the pillow.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, giving out wisdom without realizing it. Um, yeah, that's true. Well, I like it. Um, all right, let's play a game of overrated and underrated. This is this is the Kiwi edition. Okay. So I've got a list of like people from popular culture. You might know the names, you might not know all the names. We'll just do what we can, right? But I want to go through like which Kiwis do you reckon are overrated or underrated? I'm gonna give you some. Ready? Yeah, I'm yeah, I'm ready. Alright, let's go. Lord. Oh, underrated, man. Underrated? Yeah. Why?
SPEAKER_00It's just like what does that mean?
SPEAKER_02So overrated means that uh she's like too famous, too popular, uh, and she's very well known, does very well for herself, but like she's not that talented, or she's not that good at what she does. And underrated. And underrated means that they're extremely talented, very good at what they do, have a lot to offer, but not enough people know about them.
SPEAKER_00Oh, here, care. Underrated. Um I I I really love her.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I really I had her music too. I I love her music.
SPEAKER_02I love her. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, yeah. Dreams don't be left on the pillow, bro. I love a bit of both. I love a bit of um I love a bit of Lord, I love a bit of um ribs. Ribs, yeah. Yeah, right. My favorite song.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so underrated. Underrated. Alright. Uh Dave Dobbin. Say the name again. Dave Dobbin. You must you know Dave Dobbin, Slice of Heaven, Loyal. Call me loyal. You know that song?
SPEAKER_00I probably know the songs by just Slice of Heaven. Slice Slice of Heaven, like the single song.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Oh, bro, like underreads. Yeah, yeah. I I love him. Um I know his music. Welcome home.
SPEAKER_01Welcome home.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01See, I made a place for you, right? New Zealand. Yeah, bro. He's like Kiwi icon, dude.
SPEAKER_02Oh man, damn. Yo, people are gonna hate me for this. He's not real Kiwi. No, I'm kidding, kidding. Yeah, well he's he's he's a he's an icon. Classic. So underrated. Oh, clearly underrated. Yeah, yeah. Oh, you gotta go listen to Dave. I know the songs, I just can't remember his name. That's all right. Underrated Dave Dobbin. All right, uh, Benny. You know Benny, the pop artist?
SPEAKER_00Oh, overrated, bro. Overrated. Oh, I'm gonna I I know I know she might. If you post this, I know she might see this, bro. Oh, do you do do you know her? I don't know her, but she I don't know, she's online. Alright, she knows she knows you know.
SPEAKER_02She's she's online quite a lot. Alright, overrated. Okay, no. Okay, cool. We'll leave it there. Alright, Stan Walker. You must know who Stan Walker is. Yeah, no, I know I know.
SPEAKER_00Um not underrated.
SPEAKER_02I actually I actually agree with that. Yeah, I think.
SPEAKER_00I know. He's one of my first artists that I actually knew in New Zealand. Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah. Um we did um Ulter. We did like a performance from a song Ulter in primary school. Cool. And then we were just dancing around, you know, on the stage while everyone's just sitting down um watching us. Um, yeah, the memories, man.
SPEAKER_02Shout out Stan Walker. Alright. Mean, yeah, I agree. Um man, I don't know if you know who this is actually. Do you know who Bic Runger is?
SPEAKER_00No, I don't.
SPEAKER_02Damn, we're going back. That might that might be a bit too old for you. Yeah. You should check out Bic Runger, man. She was uh, yeah, like very big, very big um artist, New Zealand artists in like the 90s, 2000s. Could you like like sway?
SPEAKER_01Like sway my way. Yeah, I need to know.
SPEAKER_00Probably heard that at one of the garage parties. Surely, surely. One of the garage parties. That's a classic, bro. It's a well yeah, my nana's probably um I'm not the same as your nana. On the karaoke, man.
SPEAKER_02On the drink of the underrated, that's what I'm going. If you don't know who she is, she's underrated. Big Runga, man. She's classic. Uh Kimbra. Don't know who Kimber is? No, I don't know. Oh, okay. Do you know what though? I know she don't really know any of those songs. And I've seen her live too. Live. She was at a festival and she's she's quite a big Kiwi artist. Yeah, she watches us, so she's like, oh the fuck, but I saw her live and I was like, oh yeah, cool. But yeah, I was quite drunk, so Memory. Um let's say underrated in this case. Okay. Because she is actually very talented. Yeah. Alright. Um 660.
SPEAKER_00Like overrated? I agree. Yeah. I uh it's it's like the I don't know. Their music isn't really my type. Really, yeah, it's not that type of music I like. That's that's probably why. Or it's probably just bad. But uh yeah, I know overrated. Amen.
SPEAKER_02I agree with you. I think they're very okay. Yeah. I find their fame in New Zealand and in general. I find it odd. But that's my opinion. And it sounds like yours, so we have something in common there. Alright. Take Itane. Oh man, I've heard of that.
SPEAKER_01Always on my mind. Don't you know that job always.
SPEAKER_00No, well, underrated, clearly. Uh underrated. Another song, is there another song?
SPEAKER_02Uh that's the most famous one that I like the most notorious one is. It's probably not the right word. But yeah, very, very famous. He's also an amazing producer as well. Oh wow. Yeah. Yeah. Check him out, man. I'll give you something. I'm gonna give I gotta give you a list after this. Okay, alright. LAB.
SPEAKER_00Well, I've actually heard of that. That's good. What's a song?
SPEAKER_02Um oh gosh, I actually used to be in a cover band and I used to play it. Oh my god. But it's obviously forgettable. Sorry, LAB. Um I've heard of the name though. They're very famous in New Zealand. Like they do very well. And now I've forgotten. Um, but anyway, let's say underrated in this case, because I can't remember. Alright, last two musicians. There's the last two musician ones. Alright. Shapeshifter. I don't know that one. You don't know Shapeshifter? No, I don't know. Damn, underrated, clearly. Alright, dude, I've got to give you a list. Drum and bass, uh New Zealand Act, very, very big. Like toured all over the world. DMB. Um live drum and bass. So it's a full-on band, yeah. Very cool. Okay, underrated. Alright. Surely you know this last one. Like, this is like you've got to know this last one, bro. Fat Freddy's drop.
SPEAKER_00Oh, dude.
SPEAKER_02But you're naming people that like um not that old. I mean, uh they old. Like, well, what's what's old to you? I guess you are, but yeah, no, I'm 30. Um, if they were if they were like famous pre-2010. 80s. No, this is not. This is this is two this is 2000s. 2000s. 2000s and late 90s. Not all of these. I probably LAB's like last 10 years, that's pretty new. I probably have heard their music. I just don't know the name.
SPEAKER_00I don't know the name.
SPEAKER_02Well, Fat Freddy's Fat Freddy's Drop, you must know. Shapeshifter, can you sing me a song? Uh let's if it's like in colour. I know the beats. So the answer is no. I can't really sing you a song. That's also bad on my part. So I'm also failing too. Underrated. Okay, Fat Freddy's Drop in this case is also underrated. But um, yeah. You must do it and yeah, yeah. You must have heard that song's been played everywhere like a billion times. Probably, maybe.
SPEAKER_01Wondering I. I got the wandering eye.
SPEAKER_02Damn. Man. Damn, we've got to brush up of that. Damn. This is like O'Shea Murphy exposed. What's happening, bro? What is happening? Alright, we'll go to the actors and filmmakers. Surely you know these people. Okay. Alright. This will be easier. Alright. Alright, overrated, underrated.
SPEAKER_00Peter Jackson. Oh, bro. Nah, that guy's underrated. I love that guy. I love that guy so much. Um, all his films that he makes is just it's good. It's good. Like, there's not one bad film that I know that he has made. Um, yeah, underrated. I'll go underrated. Underrated. Uh Taika Waititi. Oh, he was underrated. He's a bit overrated um now, but like right now. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Right now. But he was he was underrated for a long time. Yeah, it was just because of that that Thor movie, bro. That Thor movie, um, Love and Funder. I I was like, oh. That's it, Love and Funder, not Ragnarok. What is this? But like surely he'll get back on the underrated list. He'll get back there.
SPEAKER_02He's a very talented filmmaker. But I think he has been very prominent in even Hollywood, you know. He's very I wanna say in your face, but he just seems to be everywhere. Which kudos to him making it happen. But um But I mean the guy's also worked very hard for a very long time to get there, so I respect that.
SPEAKER_00There's this new movie of him uh that he made uh Clara and the Son. He didn't make it, it's it's based off a novel, but like um I can't wait for it. If if I find that if I find that movie good, it's uh the general takers in it as well. Love that girl. Um if I find it good, you're back on the on the rated list, man. I love you though, I love you.
SPEAKER_02Alright. Um this one's a little bit of a throwback, but classic Lucy Lawless. Do you know who that is? Xena Warrior Princess. This is like New Zealand, she was got like New Zealand actress very much. What's the film she's been in? Um probably the most ever famous. Have you seen Parks and Recreation? The TV show? Did you ever watch that? No, well she was in that. Well, underrated by the sounds of it. Um Lucy Lillis. She's uh she's been in quite a few things, but those are the two most famous things top of my head.
SPEAKER_00Oh wow.
SPEAKER_02Nah, I've never. Well, sounds like I got some links to send you after this. Carl Urban. Oh very well. Who's that? So he was uh you seen The Boys? Yeah. Oh yeah, the guy with the angle Butcher. Butcher, butcher, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Bro, that guy he was in Lord of the Rings as well.
SPEAKER_00I did not know that. Uh you know why? Because I've never seen any of them. You haven't seen any of Lord of the Rings? I've never seen any of the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. Um, but I still I still love Peter Jackson though. Um that's crazy. But um hey, I've seen I've seen King Kong, but uh um so Carl Urban then sounds like underrated, underrated underrated, bro. Um I heard that he was on Shorten Street as well.
SPEAKER_02Like I mean I mean just for a one-time thing. I mean who hasn't? Yes. Speaking of Shorten Street, alright, next one. You must know the next one. Yeah, say it. Terim Terramu Morrison. Oh um Once Warriors, Mandalorian, is overrated, bro.
SPEAKER_00Um overrated, Terramu Morrison overrated? No, it's like I loved him on what's up. Of the road in Shorten Street, that's way back, but yeah, I I know, yeah. I wasn't I wasn't watching that back then. Uh but I loved them on Shorner Street, I've loved them on um oh no, not Sean Street, Once Were Warriors. I loved them on um He was on Mandalorian, right? It was um it was Bubba Fit. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And um uh the one thing I didn't like him on was uh Aquaman. Oh, you didn't like him in the I don't know, it just doesn't like Didn't really fit. He didn't really suit the role. I'm not gonna lie, he didn't suit it. But um, you know why I changed my mind? I I got underrated, I go underrated. It's just because of that Aquaman film, but I'll let that one slide. Alright. I'll let it slide. Okay. Alright, um Sam Neil. Oh. Nah. Overrated. Overrated. Yeah, overrated. Not really my my type of actor to like to be watching all the time. Just a park, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
unknownNah. Nah.
SPEAKER_02Overrated. Yeah, overrated. Uh Reese Derby. Oh, who's that? Reese Darby, he's been in like R Flag me uh R Flag means death. He was on Fire of the Concords, which you haven't seen, so that doesn't help. He's also been the voiceover, what was that anime? Vin something, I can't remember. But he's a comedian. He's a famous New Zealand comedian, but he's also an actor. Oh, comedian. Yeah. I've probably seen his face because I've seen a bunch of comedians in New Zealand. Yeah, so you you you'll know him when you see him. Alright, well, clearly underrated. Um, and then I got the Fire the Concord members here, Brett and Jermaine Clement, but uh Brett McKenzie and Jermaine Clement, but sounds like yeah, underrated by the sounds of it. Um what about oh, okay. That's why Julian uh Dennison. He's he's the guy, you know, guys. Yeah, and from Deadpool.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Underrated. No, that guy's cool. That guy's cool. Um I love his acting. I love his acting on yeah, Paper Planes, Hunt for the World of People. We got the um go Hunt for the World of People. That is just like Shopping. Shopping was the first film I think he was in. Uh Humphful the World of People. Yo, what's your thoughts about that? I love that movie. Love that movie too.
SPEAKER_02It's just like, uh, it's just yeah. It's like, I'll be honest, if I'm overseas and I watch that, I miss home. It's one of those movies where you just you just like New Zealand just summed up. He did Sam Neal's also in that movie. Yeah, I know, I know. He plays he plays that old guy.
SPEAKER_00Uh, but he he he really did good on Deadpool. I I liked him on Deadpool. Um, I didn't really like him on Frick, what's that? Big Az Monster, the Godzilla. Um he was on Godzilla. I don't really like him on it. I haven't seen it. Oh, yeah, I'm not gonna lie, I've only seen that one. And um the last Godzilla movie I seen was like way back. It was way back. Yeah, I haven't seen the new ones. Um I like them. I can't really say I liked them on how to train your dragon because um he wasn't really on much scenes, but he did good. He did good though. So I see I say underrated. I say underrated. Underrated, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Alright, well that's the film alright. We'll go into we'll go into sports uh we'll go to athletes now. I reckon a lot of these are overrated, but let's get into it. Name one. Alright, Richie McCaw. Underrated. I love the guy. Underrated? Yep. I reckon in my he's just rated. He's rated at the right level. He doesn't need more it's it's enough in my opinion. He's R18, man. Yeah, he's just rated, in my opinion. But yeah, okay, underrated, fair. Uh Dan Carter.
SPEAKER_00Uh um Yeah, yeah. Same as what you say. Rated. Yeah, rated.
SPEAKER_02He's at the right level.
SPEAKER_00Just rated, yeah. Um Valerie Adams. Oh, she underrated. She underrated. I love her work, yeah. Love her work. Steven Adams? Oh, he's rated. He's rated.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think so. I think so too. Uh Lydia Co. I don't know who that is. She's um like I think one of the youngest ever golf. She's a Kiwi, Kiwi girl who like won a lot of like golf championships, but like like on like the yeah, like very I don't know the golf competition. Yeah, yeah, same golf. At the highest level of golf. She's very young. So underrated, clearly. Yeah. Oh yeah, underrated.
SPEAKER_00Um Israel Adasanya. Oh, he rated, he rated, yeah, yeah, yeah. Um man, yeah, he's really professional what he does, eh? Uh, but he's also very very like very humble, you know. He's very humble, man. It's like, man, I wanna I wanna be on that level. But like, um, yeah, he's he's rated. He's rated. I f I I think so. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I think he doesn't need to be bigger than he is, but I think he's at the right level. He's he's at the right level. He's achieved a lot of great things, but I think he's like known for them well. I'm a big UFC fan, so yeah, what I love that shit. Um so I reckon uh he's at the he's done very well for himself and he put the sport on the map in New Zealand big time. Got fuck all appreciation for ages until like just recently, I think. It's really weird watching UFC on Sky Sport, I tell you that. It's like wow, this is mainstream. Strange.
SPEAKER_00Wait, um, would you like UFC or wrestling? I'm I'm talking WWE. What do I like more? Yeah, UFC for sure. UFC? Yeah. What's your favourite martial arts? My favorite? Yeah.
SPEAKER_02If I had to choose one martial art, one gosh, that's a good question. Or like what comes second, you know? Oh, are you talking about a sporting competition? Because I guess my favourite martial arts is mixed martial arts. MMA. So MA's might probably my favourite, but then if I had to put a close second, it would actually these days be uh Brazilian jujitsu, just because it's such a complex, strange martial art. I haven't heard that one before. Ah, have you ever watch uh mixed martial arts and they go to the ground and you see them trying to like each other? That's that's jujitsu.
SPEAKER_00I that's what that's Wing Chung. Did you? Yeah, I did Wing Chung for about like a year and a half. How'd you find that? I found the pretty it was it was fun. It was fun. I learned a lot, but also um I lost I lost um a lot of knowledge because uh I stopped going to it. Ah right. Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Wing chan is interesting, they've got some interesting movements, yeah. A lot of that. Yeah. Yeah, it does. I've been some guys, because in the UFC you get a lot of different styles in there, and some people come from I've seen guys do win chan movies. I'm like, wow, that's that's out of it. I'll be honest, it doesn't really work, but uh they try it. Because it's all about yeah, it's all like the combination of like well, MMA now is like it's its own thing. Whereas before, you know, people would be like jujitsu guys, Thai kickboxers, boxers, yeah, whereas wrestlers, whereas now it's like you gotta be good at everything. If you're not good at everything, you got no chance. But yeah. Okay, next one, uh, similar fan uh Joseph Parker.
SPEAKER_00Um was he really like known outside of New Zealand?
SPEAKER_02Like was he like I think he is now. He is now because he's in that top boxing, he's like in talks with going against um what's his name? Not Tyson Fury, oh Osig, the other heavyweight boxer. Oh, bruh, yeah. So Joseph Parker, like there's been talks about him getting into that'd be amazing. Joseph Parker.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I'd say underrated. I'd say underrated, yeah, yeah, yeah. He'll um man, how old is he? I don't know. I I think I don't know.
SPEAKER_02I don't think he's old. I think he's probably like late 30s, maybe. Oh, late 30s.
SPEAKER_00I think, yeah, yeah, yeah. He'll um more exposure to that guy, yeah. Uh yeah, underrated.
SPEAKER_02Underrated. Yeah. And then we'll go, oh, uh, what about Sonny Bo Williams?
SPEAKER_00Sonny Bo Williams. Rated, rated, yeah. I agree. Everyone knows that guy. He's on he's on the right list.
SPEAKER_02He's everyone's cousin. That's what people say, yeah. Oh, yeah, I know of, yeah, yeah, yeah. My favorite one, this probably shows my age a little bit, but when I was young, I remember the guy who everyone would call their cousin was uh Doug Howlett. Doug Howard. He was a um all black and he was like a very famous, he was like one of the best uh blues players as well. Oh no back in the day. But everyone was like Doug Howlett, bro, he's my cousin. I'm like, is he? I don't believe that. And then everyone would joke around about like the rock being their cousin as well. Have you heard that one?
SPEAKER_00I've had that one, but um with different actors, yeah. Like, you know, the common one, Taika Wait.
SPEAKER_01I know that guy, man.
SPEAKER_00He's down the road, bro. I'm just like, all right, man. Oh, that's actually my uncle. I'm like, I approve it. It's like, oh bro, like um it's like bro, what are you saying? You're just saying words. Yeah, people are funny like that. Uh uh, I used to say Sonny Bill Williams, right? Yes, I did that. Did you ever like as a kid go onto the barbers and it'd be like, oh, can you give me a sonny bill, bro? Have you ever asked for that? I never did though. You never did, no, no, no. Um, so I never knew uh who Sonny Bill Williams was as a kid. So do you feel that was a haircut? Yeah, yeah, because bro, because um my um my mum and dad um kept asking the baller, oh the baba like, oh, oh, can you give them a Sonny Bill? I was like, oh, oh, it must be a cool haircut. After the haircut, like like every time after the haircut, it was always good. So I was like, oh, I love Sonny Bill.
SPEAKER_02That's a great haircut. Hey, that is a concumbent, Sonny Bill, got good hair, amazing, amazing sportsman. Came from, I think started in league, if I'm not mistaken, then moved to Union and then was an amazing all black. So yeah, and a and a great great hairstyle. So there we go.
SPEAKER_00Wait, I actually got a question for you. Um what's up? Are you into like soccer, football? Not really. I don't really follow it. Because I was gonna ask you, like Auckland FC or Wallinson Phoenix?
SPEAKER_02I've been to a game. I've been to some games.
SPEAKER_00Uh you know much about Wallinson Phoenix?
SPEAKER_02Uh I know the team, but I can't I can't tell you about them.
SPEAKER_00Uh yeah, yeah. So Auckland um Auckland FC then. I'm I'm such a massive Wallington um Phoenix fan. Shout out to my football mate Ace. Uh yeah, he he got me into he got me into football because of Wellington Phoenix. The reason why I choose that rather than Auckland FC, because I knew Wallington first, Dan Auckland. Um I I don't even know Auckland was a thing. Auckland FC. It's become a thing now. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02It's really big. That's something I didn't have on my 2020s bingo card. Was Auckland football becoming so big that like it was selling out Mountain Smart. I mean it's awesome. I'm not Mount Smart, it's called Go. What's it's Mount it's not called Mount Smart Stadium anymore, is it? They call it Gogo Stadium or some shit.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I didn't know that.
SPEAKER_02But anyway, it I because I went to a game earlier in the year and I was like, whoa, since when did we give a shit about local football? Turns out we do. That's really not that's really cool. Yeah, yeah, I didn't even know I was surprised. Like I was like, since when was this selling out events? But hey, well done to OpenFC. Great stuff.
SPEAKER_00Because I started getting into football like last year. Like, um because I I I like I knew it was like a sport, but like I didn't know like New Zealand was doing it. Yeah, yeah, it's it's new to me too, man.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Like because when I was younger, did you play soccer football when you were young?
SPEAKER_00Like not really.
SPEAKER_02It was more basketball. Basketball? Yeah. Because that's what I played lots when I was younger, and like because like kids play a lot of soccer and football. It was I don't know if it still is the most popular sport for like young people to play, but like I've when I was younger. Rugby. No, it was more popular than rugby. Like more kids would play football. Yeah. Oh, what the heck? Yeah, way more popular. I play a bit of rugby in school. That's actually quite fun. Um, until you're at you're at that age when you're like year seven, and then you go like the year eight, and the size difference is just nuts. You get that one kid who's like six foot, and you're like, how the hell is a 12-year-old six foot? And then you just get fucking destroyed. Run over. It's like, ah. What about touch? You play touch? I've uh long time, bro. I don't think I've played touch rugby, probably since I was a kid. I know. I know. But that is fun. I I do miss that. I do sometimes miss that, but I just yeah. Even like, yeah, I did quite enjoy rugby, but oof, don't know. Don't have the cardio to do that. Playing, you know, especially running for that long. Uh I was playing tennis the ultra very long and I was like, oof, that's right, I've got to run around a lot. Of course. Oh, that's right. Yeah, it's a sport, yeah. But a move. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Uh yeah, because um, you get I I just yeah, I just do like a dabble in some martial arts stuff, and I'm just like one fitness, you know. It doesn't translate though, really, to much else. What about you? Do you do much to keep fit? Doing sport?
SPEAKER_00Uh so let's go back before high school. I used to do rugby touch or whatever with a rugby ball. Um, and then I got into high school and I was more into basketball because I don't know, it was just it was just my favorite sports um out of nowhere. And yeah, me now getting fit, uh so after I graduated high school, I did nothing. I did not like I did no sports, I did no like you know, I didn't even know what a gym was. Like I didn't like I've never been to a gym, but I um but today I I go gym, I go basketball, I walk, run, I do whatever to get fit. I just um yeah. Yeah, man. That's solid. Try and keep it up.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's not easy. You have to make time for it. Times get busier, you get busy with things, but as soon as the fitness goes, the energy goes, yeah, and the health goes. So yeah, it's all intertwined. Well, that was my uh that was those are my lists, man. Unless you got any more you want to add. But interesting. I gotta send you a lot of stuff, that's what I think. Fire the Concords for sure, bro. You're gonna love that.
SPEAKER_00I thought I thought when when you were about to say like the athletes' names, I I I thought I was gonna like know none of that. Because I'm not really into like the sports thing. Sport world. Oh, like yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02You knew all of them. They're all very I mean the most small known ones, right? Yeah, like but no, you did you did good. I didn't throw out like Greg Murphy or something. Yeah, yeah. If you watch um if I got I got some mates who are really into like um Bathurst and Rally racing, but yeah, Puka Kowee, shout out. Puka Koe. Well that's uh but that's where Greg Murphy's from. He's a very he's a f famous New Zealand rally driver. Yep. Yeah, did like very well in Australia. I think only like New Zealand and Australia are famous, but like very successful in his in in his um in his rally. But then also like a minor celebrity in New Zealand kind of thing. There's all like the insurance ads, and like you know, it's always funny with like sport players, like it's like Richie McCaw, or even like uh do you remember Stephen Fleming from the cricket team? I do, yeah. And they after they all retire, they all do like heat pump ads or something. They're all on TV, like doing like I mean, hey, get that bread, but um there's some like yeah, or like Richie McCaw talking about his garage, and I'm like, fair bro, fair enough. Garage selling what was that company? I don't know, it doesn't well anyway. It's just I'm like, fair enough, man. I got it build their own brands after retiring. Well that's what you gotta do, right? Personal brand. It's all about that shit. Yeah, but I mean you've yeah, you've got that down pack, man. I mean, oh, something I'm interested to ask you about because you're across all the platforms, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, all that stuff. Because with TikTok, that's the most popular uh people follow you on there doing very well on there. Do you find that uh does that tr How do I say this? Like, does it translate to much for you in terms of like opportunities, like you know, maybe getting acting gigs, um meeting people?
SPEAKER_00Meeting people, yes. Um not from like oh you can yeah, medium people, yeah. Uh you know, they see your stuff, they follow you, blah blah blah. Um, but um acting gigs, no. Unless you're like really doing good with the acting stuff on social media, on TikTok on that. Um sponsorships, yes, yes, a lot of sponsorships. Um you must get some funny ones.
SPEAKER_02What's the fun actually that's a good question? What's the funniest sponsorship you've been asked to do? You don't just say the company, just like the product or something, like a toilet spot.
SPEAKER_00Um man, I was probably the Snoop Dogg Lighter. Snoop Dogg Lighter, yeah. It's probably that. Um there was also the This was actually pretty fun to film, um, but I had a headache while filming it. It was um it was like an ad for this Tv3 show called Noob, and it was pretty fun, but it's like it's like a sponsorship that I've never done before. Like um try do a sponsorship for like um a TV show. Yeah, I've never done that before, but it was pretty fun. Um yeah, but the funniest one would have to be the Snoop Dogg lighter, and I did that recently too with BK.
SPEAKER_02Oh right afterwards two months ago, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Obviously, it wasn't Snoop Dogg reaching out, but um uh for social media in general, like um, yeah, yeah, uh you meet new people, you just like I don't know, you just have fun with it. Uh because for myself I I'm just having fun. Um yeah, and it's become it's become like a habit now. A habit because like I've posted for so long, and like if I stop, it it just it just feels wrong. So I just I just keep going.
SPEAKER_02Well the momentum will the algorithms are ruthless.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, yeah, I also know that you'll get to uh you'll get to know more, you know, with experience. Just I just keep posting because like you know, if you just keep posting, you'll like learn more or like what your audience wants to see and like you know what you want to deliver in it.
SPEAKER_02Um I'll be honest, I'd I this called the Only Scott Podcast, this is just what I want to do.
SPEAKER_00Only Scott I I know I know what you mean though. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02If you if you want to play the game right, of course.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. If you really want to know the algorithm, then yeah, you cater to the audience.
SPEAKER_02Learn more. Yeah, yeah. That's true. That is the way to do it. Um yeah, and I've learned that with like I've wrote like my business account and stuff, but like for this, I'm just like I'm having fun with it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I smell yeah, you know, I'm just having fun with it doing what I want to do. But that also means there's a cost to that, which means not as much, maybe not as much growth, not as much followers, not as much whatever. But I'm actually okay with that. Yeah, but every now and again I'll be like, we get a little like boop, like I'm like, oh, why the fuck did that pop off? Sometimes I get very surprised. They're just podcast clips, right? You never know. Yeah, and I'm like, oh, this subject's really cool, and then people just don't give a shit. And I'm like, all right, fair. But it's always interesting, eh? You never I I with the podcast, it's kind of like a roulette. Um, yeah, I don't know. But I just put up the stuff I like, and that's kind of all that really matters to me. It's like a gamble, gambling. It kind of is, but um, yeah, I think I think it just really depends on what you want to do with it. Because I've had someone ask me, which is interesting because I don't make any money on this podcast. But some people say, Oh, like how do you like do it? Like, what do you do to the audience? I'm like, I'm not the person to ask, but uh, if I was to make money off a podcast, I'd choose a niche. Because one of my friends, he's got a podcast called um One Shot Show uh podcast, and it's all about Dungeons and Dragons. Oh wow, and it's about um what are they called? The guys who host the games, it's all about like how to like create a really good game and like from uh the perspective of the dungeon master. There we go. I've never played a game, but my mate's really into it, and he's done really well. Um, like getting like quite a lot of traction and stuff. Um, but it's because he's got a niche. Damn. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Dungeons and Dragons, I've never played that game before, must be really good.
SPEAKER_02It's um I think it's if you've got a big imagination, you probably quite enjoy it. So it's a lot of imagination creating characters and like you know, you kind of like uh envisioning fighting in dungeons and around the board.
SPEAKER_00Is it like roleplay?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Role play.
SPEAKER_02K kind of like that. Yeah.
unknownWow.
SPEAKER_02But it's uh it's a long game. Yeah. It's about like it takes like eight hours sometimes. Down. Yeah, really? Yeah. What the heck? I've I've never played it, but um like my mate will like host these he'll host like those um some some games. Yeah, yeah. It gets pretty crazy. I'm just like, wow, I do not have the intention for that. Or I'm not really into ball games myself too much, but um, I'm like fair play. But again, an example of a niche that does very well. Um, but if you yeah, I think it just depends what you want to do. Yeah. With the I gu everyone's do social media. I think the funniest thing for me with social media was when everyone decided to take it seriously. That's what weirded me out.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, though.
SPEAKER_02I remember when like I mean, I obviously hypocritical other business, I'm on social media, but It just was funny when I remember the day when it was all just like dumb videos. It still is, but it's like now businesses are like, how do we leverage it to, you know, sell and like be serious? And you got politicians making political campaigns. I'm like, the fuck? Like, what is like Chris Luxon and Bloody Jacinda doing on TikTok? It's very strange. I d I still find that maybe a bit older. I I just find that a bit weird. Yeah. I don't know if you find that weird.
SPEAKER_00Uh uh um I do because like you know, for example, the other politicians, they uh they figured out that a lot of kids or just a lot of people in general are on social media, so they just joined it.
SPEAKER_02And um, yeah, it's it's kind of weird, like trying to get like the attention to like you know and making videos that are like obviously based off viral clips, yeah, and then that I'm just like this and my I maybe I don't know to me. I'm just like what the fuck? I do not take you seriously. You're meant to run the country, like I know, I know.
SPEAKER_00It's a very strange phenomenon. Yeah, I I don't really like um the way they do it. Uh you know, they could have a social media, but like it should just be serious, yeah, yeah. Keep it serious, keep it serious. The news, the like, you know, um the solutions.
SPEAKER_02Don't make it fun. Don't make it fun. But that's another thing. Well, we're getting bigger topics here, but I just feel like it's a very strange, like, new way of doing politics, eh? It's like it's about getting in front of people attention, engagement, playing the game, and it's like, but like, I don't want to vote for an influencer being the running the country.
SPEAKER_00It's like you gotta take it serious. You're not like, you know, you're a politician, you're not like some some entertainer or something like that, unless you want to be.
SPEAKER_02Um, alright, one thing I want to ask you now is I d I haven't got a list, I just want to know from you. What are the best Kiwi films?
SPEAKER_00Coming up on number two, we have um we have Shopping. I really love that film. Um What's it called song? Shopping. Oh shopping, yeah, yeah, yeah. Shopping. Um I don't know if you guys have seen it. I actually didn't I haven't, I haven't seen it. Yeah, I actually didn't know about that film until like I literally searched up New Zealand films and then they'll popped up. So I really loved that one. Um and obviously number one, we got Boy. Boy. That right No one has beaten boy yet. No one has beaten boy. Is a bit of a whale rider? Well uh that's very different, but there's something it really is. It really is better than whale rider. But I'll put whale rider on number three. Yep. Umce Well Warriors are number four.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, once we're warriors, eh? Yeah, number two. Oh, that movie is still so hard to watch. I but it's amazing, but it's hard, you know, it's it's so intense, so so real, but it's just so real that it's just like dude.
SPEAKER_00Most of my family can't even watch it properly because like um I don't know, it kind of like brings back memories for them. I guess like with all the drinking and all that uh and all the violence that was going on back then. But yeah, um to warriors are number four, man. Boy is number one. Number one. Who would who's gonna beat boy? Who is who knows?
SPEAKER_02Are you gonna be hey? Maybe you, right?
SPEAKER_00Hey, who knows? You never know.
SPEAKER_02If I make a film that's surprisingly good, then we'll know. Never say never, man. Never say never. Oh yeah, okay. Those are the best ones. Yeah, there's uh I don't really know what my favorite um my favorite Kiwi movie is, eh? Half hard for me to say. I don't think I've actually seen enough. I just know lots of like overseas films or shows with Kiwi actors and stuff. Yeah. I mean Outrageous Fortune is a classic. Can't give you. Did you watch Outrageous Fortune? You might have a bit young for that. Um that was a big show. How old are you? I'm 31. God damn, yeah. Yeah, I'm old, man. 23 young. I'm 21. 21. 23 is kind of crazy.
unknown23.
SPEAKER_02I thought you were the same age as PK, that's why. Oh no, no, I'm 21. Oh, right. Yeah. Okay, that makes sense. Yeah, because um, yeah, the boys um the guy who plays Homelander, he's uh from Outrageous Fortune. He was in the world. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, okay. I love I love that guy. What's his name? Um Anthony Anthony Star. Yeah, yeah, that's his name.
SPEAKER_02Man, that show. I cannot give enough kudos to the boys because that is a banger. I love that show. Love everything about it. What do we talk about the boys? Yeah, let's go. All right, I love that show. Yeah, I think like um I just love how they turned it on its head. Like, it's too many superheroes, everyone's so nice and good. It's like, but if people had that power, they ain't gonna be nice. I'm telling you, people are egos power hungry, like you think people are gonna be nice.
SPEAKER_00For example, if um if if that drug was real, like, dude, everyone will turn out exactly how how Homelander turned up. Yeah, be psychos. Exactly like that. Yeah, um, but me. You're be the same.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I'd be different, man.
SPEAKER_00I'm not gonna be like that. I'm gonna be worse. I'm gonna be worse. Yeah, I'm not gonna lie. If I ever had that drug, bro, I'm I'm out of here. I'm I'm off earth. No, you're leaving. I ain't staying here. Where are you going? I'm I'm I'm gonna colonize a planet, man. I I'm gonna take over our whole planet and and have it as my own.
SPEAKER_02Probably just have to fight against Elon Musk, but fair enough.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. I gotta he's got money. I gotta take someone with me so I can like reproduce and then make like a a superior race.
SPEAKER_02This sounds familiar. Um yeah, you'd be worse. Ah fair, you know? Hey, yeah, honestly.
SPEAKER_00But like I wouldn't kill anyone. I wouldn't like do that damage. I would very selfish, yeah, yeah. Like, for example, if if Homelander was to, you know, come get me, um I'll probably beat him up before I leave. Uh yeah, I'll probably defeat him. That's the only person who I would actually, you know, like touch uh before leaving. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Man, there's that scene that I just like will never be able to get out of my head, but it's that scene of Homelander. I mean, there's so many, but one that I will and like the one of the earlier seasons, and there's that girl on top of the building, and she's about to like jump, and then he's just like, Why don't you just get why don't you just do it? She and she's like, Why'd you just do it?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. At that point, I was like, whoa. At that point, like that guy has just given up on like you know being kind, bro. He just he's just like, Oh, okay, no one respects me, okay, alright. Let's yeah, yeah, just go do it, bro. That's insane.
SPEAKER_02Go jump. But imagine if like as if like in real life, like some like like you're like, I don't know, maybe like uh suicide prevention or something, and then if you're just a nutter and you just tell someone like why don't you just do it? And then they're just like maybe like rewise their brain, they're like, no, fuck you, and then it saved them. Hey, it worked. I mean, maybe. I'm not saying to do it, I'm just reverse psychology, you know? Mm-hmm. Never know. And then they actually do it.
SPEAKER_00And then you're just like, uh, well, the homelander of the shouldn't work. Oh, two people will agree. So, alright, let me go door then. Like, oh it then.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it doesn't, yeah, that'd be crazy. Yeah, I know. But um, yeah, what a show. Fucking sweet. Alright, bro. We're nearing the end. Uh, I think what we should do is I'll do some quick fire questions and then we'll wrap up. Alright, first one. What is the best New Zealand food? What's the best food we've got in New Zealand?
SPEAKER_00A good old homemade boiler, bro. Good homemade hangi. Um, have to go off the best thing we have in New Zealand.
SPEAKER_02You know, I've never had a proper hungy before.
SPEAKER_00Really? I know.
SPEAKER_02I feel like I've missed out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, just go to the markets, man. You'll get 'em. Um, especially Henderson. Henderson Night Markets, man. I'm never going there again. But uh the food I got from there was um actually pretty good. I got like I got hangi. But um, yeah, there was just like fights on fights, man. And I thought it was just a one-time thing until like um people have been recording that same Henderson Night Markets. Um, you know, just fights on on a weekly and yeah, never going there again. Damn. If you want some good seafood, go to Mangane Bridge. Mangany Bridge. Mangane Bridge. That's that that's the best seafood. I've never had any better.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, right. Yeah. Um what's uh what okay, second New Zealand theme. What's uh what's the best pie flavour? What's the best pie flavor?
SPEAKER_00Probably like uh Oh, there is one. Uh it's like a I think it's pepper steak.
SPEAKER_02Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00Pepper steak. Wait, pepper steak? No, I think it is pepper steak, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Um it's just like a s a steak pie with pepper on top. We we we're crazy out here in New Zealand bar flavors.
SPEAKER_02Steak and pepper, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Um it's a fair choice. Yeah, I haven't heard that as a favourite. Bakery pies, man. You have to choose New Zealand's bake, like that's one thing I love about this country so dearly. The bakery pies. Our bakeries are just fucking off the chain. It always makes me upset when you say, Oh, we should like get a pie, and then the Americans like an apple pie. And I'm like, no, bro, not an apple pie. Man, yeah, um not a sweet pie.
SPEAKER_00Because they have a lot of people, when you say pie, they think of sweet pies. Honestly, I didn't like I thought everyone had bakeries, yeah, yeah, yeah. Had bakeries, the same pies as us. I even thought that it um even after I left high school. Yeah, I was like, oh, what the heck? And then I started seeing a bunch of videos online saying, like, we are trying the New Zealand pie. We don't have this in America. I'm like, oh, what the heck? Yeah, I thought you guys did, but uh, I guess not.
SPEAKER_02No, it's not same with like sausage rolls, yeah. Like that I mean English do obviously in Australia, but but but not the not the Americans and like Canadians and Europeans. Same with coffee. Like you a coffee drinker? Not really, but I like coffee. Yeah, it's not a good habit. I'm hooked. Um it's my addiction I do have. But in New Zealand, we got great we got great coffee. Great coffee. And you go overseas and you're like, oh it's not as good, man.
SPEAKER_00It's not as good. I think we took um the Europeans coffee. But then we made the flat white.
SPEAKER_02Oh, Australia. Oh, the flat white Australia into the chat. Who made it? Australia, New Zealand's fight about it. Well, is that like a lot of it's a controversial really it is, yeah. Who made the flat white? Oh, yeah. Oh, bright. Yeah, that's a controversial one.
SPEAKER_00There's like the Wheatbooks and Milo thing. Yes. Um Pavlova, of course. That's the big one. Yeah, that's that's the big battle. Yeah. Um yeah, I still don't know who who was the first to make it.
SPEAKER_02Nah, neither. But I'll say New Zealand because New Zealand's for shit.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, I'd say New Zealand too, because uh I don't know any any person in Australia who's actually made it. Um he never travelled there, so fair. He doesn't know anybody because he's never been. I mean, bro, I'm not gonna lie. No one like in like are like Australians. Um what was their culture? It's Aboriginal or something like that. Yeah, Aboriginal as well. I've never seen one of them make Pavlova. I've only seen um are the ones I have seen who's made Pavlova in Australia was people who's moved there from New Zealand. It's like I don't know.
SPEAKER_02There we go. All right, second of New Zealand theme. Where's one of the best places to go in New Zealand? Or visit or it could be yeah, like where Queens Queenstown.
SPEAKER_00Queenstown, yeah, that has to be the best place in New Zealand to visit. Um we just got the views. We've got great activities down there, like um snowboarding. Uh big ice. Glaciers? Uh glaciers, um, snow. We have uh the people there is great too. I'm not gonna lie, when I went down there, I thought everyone was gonna be racist. Like uh, but nah, um I think it's just I don't know, um just the people up here that I've I've been friends with or like I've met, like said, oh I don't go down there, it's it's all racist people. I went down there and like I'm not gonna lie, no one down there talks, you know, talks bad about the people up here in in the North Island. Oh in Christchurch they do, I will say that. Bro, I got don't get me started with Christchurch, man. We won't talk about that, won't we? That is the one place in like in New Zealand that I really hate. There we go, there we go. I'm not talking about like the place in I'm I'm talking about the people, bro. The people like I I I went there like three, four times and I hated it every single time. There we go. Um it's just like they're so rude, they're so rude, they're so mean for no reason. They start trouble, they start like drama. I'm not going to lie. The people who like, you know, the um other common thing, like, oh you got an eye problem. Like, bro, I'm not gonna lie. That is less okay. So people I know what you mean. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That is like less rude than what people say in Chryschurch. Yeah, right. Like, oh, you got an eye problem. I'm like, bro, what are you doing? Um, but there's the people in Christchurch where like they just start fights, like yeah, like they're not even racist, they're like they just pick on everyone. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Everyone gets treated badly, which is also fair. Socks, man. Um it's not good, no.
SPEAKER_00Where was I oh yeah, so uh best place to go is Queenstown.
SPEAKER_02Avoid Christchurch, by the sounds. Yeah, so I I think the most um best place to visit is Queenstown. Queenstown. Alright, we'll go over that. Um what else have I got? I can just pull out of the air. Um what's something we do really well in New Zealand?
SPEAKER_00Uh we help we help each other out. Um we have a good community of people. Um no matter where you are, you'll you'll always get help, especially from the like the old people. Like I'm talking about the nans, the the aunties. Yeah, yeah. Oh the aunties, the aunties, oh especially the Marai Fano. Like, um, bro, they're all like nice, they're all yeah, they come together, you know. Like they're not they're not as mean as the other people outside of New Zealand. That's all I can say. Yeah, no, that's fair.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, that's fair. That's nice.
SPEAKER_02That's a nice note. Let's finish on that. Hey, O'Shea Murphy, thanks for coming on. Before we go, is there anything you'd like to promote or shout out before we head off?
SPEAKER_00I would like to shout out my film production I have created called OZM Productions. If you guys don't know what that stands for, it's O'Shea Zeke Murphy, it's my name. Productions. Um, yeah, so I like to shout out that, which you can follow it on Instagram, and I would love to give them a quote. I would love to give you guys a quote. Are you guys ready? Okay. If you guys have anything that you love and would love to do in the future, just like keep going. Just keep going. I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I don't know. I don't know. I'm sorry, I'm not sure. It was sounding real endearing, and then you're just like, you know what?
SPEAKER_02Don't follow your dreams, man. I had it prepared before I came here. Wait, hold up. That's alright, we'll do re- redo the take.
SPEAKER_00Redo the take. Okay, let me do it again. Okay. Redo it. The quote of the day. The quote of the year is um whatever you guys love or like enjoy. Um I reckon just keep keep going into the path that you know you want to go in. Uh that you want to um I'm this uh one more time, one more time, one more time, one more time. One more time, one more time, one more time. I'll give you one more. The quit of the year. Whatever you guys love. Your passions, keep up your passions. Um, keep up what you love, uh, keep working hard, keep doing what you love. Um uh so for example, I I love acting, right? And I am doing a lot I can to become an actor. Do a lot what you can to become what you want. All right, that's it.
SPEAKER_02Hey, there we go. We got there. Well done, bro. All right. Hey everyone, thanks for listening. It's been Ocean Murphy and the only Scott. Thank you, everyone. Cheers. Cheers.
