Beneath the Law

If “No One is Above the Law,” then everyone is beneath it. Beneath the Law is a frank discussion between two lawyers who have lived and breathed the legal system in Canada for over 30 years.

In this podcast hosts Stephen Thiele and Gavin Tighe of Gardiner Roberts, examine the arguments made in some highly contentious, and public cases, with a focus on the intersection between law and politics and where courtrooms become part of the political arena. In each episode Beneath the Law digs into interesting and current legal topics or legal battles and provides insight and commentary on the law and its application in our society.

Law is at its core the expression of the fundamental framework of any organized society – it is the fine print of the social contract. Courts play a fundamental role in any democracy, getting underneath the surface and beneath the law requires an understanding of not only what courts are doing but why.

Gavin Tighe

Gavin is a senior partner with Gardiner Roberts based in Canada and chair of its Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group. He is a frequent contributor to media and has been repeatedly cited as one of Canada’s leading lawyers by legal rating groups as well as media.

He’s been certified by the Law Society of Ontario as a Specialist in Civil Litigation for 20 years and has appeared as lead counsel in numerous provinces and at all levels of Canadian Courts including the Supreme Court of Canada in some of Canada’s leading and most high-profile cases.

Stephen Thiele

Stephen is the Director of legal research at Gardiner Roberts based in Canada. He works closely with the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group lawyers to provide advice, value added analysis and opinions on a wide range of litigation matters. He also develops strategies and legal arguments for use on motions, at trials and on appeals, often preparing the written arguments used by the firm’s Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group lawyers.

Stephen is also an author and co-author of many legal articles that cover and discuss topics related to legal research as well as others related to current high profile legal issues, including those involving the law of defamation, political law, and sports law.

Stephen is currently a Trustee for the Law Foundation of Ontario. He was the recipient of the Toronto Lawyers Association’s 2017 Honsberger Award in recognition of his accomplishments and ongoing contributions to the legal community, and the community at large.
