A Dad’s Performance Review
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
What if you asked your kids how you’re doing… and actually listened?
In this special Maven Monday episode, Brandon sits down with his most honest critic (and most important audience) for a conversation that has nothing to do with marketing and everything to do with what actually matters.
Because behind every growing business, every late night, and every big goal… there are people at home experiencing the version of you that’s left over.
This episode is a reminder that success isn’t just measured in revenue or growth. It’s measured in how you show up when the workday is over.
It’s a little different. A little more personal. And maybe exactly what you didn’t know you needed to hear this week.
Because the most important feedback you’ll ever get… probably isn’t coming from your customers.

Welcome And Special Guest
Brandon WelchWelcome to the Maven Marketing Podcast. Today is Maven Monday. I'm your host, Brandon Welch, and I have a very, very special guest who's going to do something very special for you and for me today. Please welcome the one and only Anna Banana Welch. Yes, she has her own applause track. She said, say say hi to everybody.
SPEAKER_02Hi.
Brandon WelchShe said, I'll do it, but I have to have applause. Can it can I put an applause track when you when you introduce me? So we have an applause button. I don't know if she's going to use that at all the rest of the day, but thank you so much for being here.
SPEAKER_02Thank you.
Brandon WelchShe's taken a day out of school to be here. So this is a very important thing. And we were talking this morning at coffee about um my most important job, and that is the job of being a dad, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
Brandon WelchAnd uh this is a podcast where we talk about eliminating waste in advertising so you can grow your business and achieve the big dream. The big dream for us, and I think for you, and for most of the people we work with, is so that we can be better dads and husbands and and uh providers for our friends and the community that we live in. And so my most important job that I was asking Anna about today is that of being a dad. And she said, Well, how about I give you a performance review on the podcast? And I said, Wow, that's uh the stakes are pretty high. I have not looked at her notes. Um she told me uh the three things she was gonna talk about, and I'm going to set her up and she's going to let it rip. And what we hope is that you and I can learn something as dads uh from the eyes of our kids. And Anna is so brilliant and she is so smart and she is so honest and sweet. I know it's going to be impactful. Are you ready for this?
The Three Review Questions
SPEAKER_02Yes, I am.
Brandon WelchOkay. So when we do team member reviews around here, when we do performance reviews, we ask three questions. It's it starts with what is going well? What should we keep doing no matter what? What? And then the second question is, what should we change um as soon as possible? What should we not keep doing? Like, what do we need to work on? And then the third question is like, do you have any advice? And we talk to each other about advice, open advice. So those are the three questions we're going to use today. And I will start with Anna. This is my performance review. You are my supervisor, you've been watching me. What is something uh that is going well? What should we keep doing? What should I keep doing?
SPEAKER_02Well, you are like a really kind and loving and graceful person. So everything really, like, yeah.
Brandon WelchDo you hear that, Nate, the camera guy? Now, that was that was a pretty sweet bun for a compliment sandwich. Can you tell me more? Can you tell me more? Can you give me some more um some more meat in that? What is it specifically that dads and moms might might focus on doing more of and doing well? Like, what are the things you see?
SPEAKER_02They're supposed to protect you and like just keep you safe and stuff, be good parents. And you're just doing that.
Brandon WelchI'm doing that. Yeah. Um, do I do that every single day?
SPEAKER_02Most days, yeah.
Brandon WelchMost days. Okay. Um what are the days that maybe I don't do that as well?
SPEAKER_02Some days you're stressed and you just like you just need to take a break.
Brandon WelchTake a break. Okay. So is there anything else you want to put in the stuff that we should keep doing as dads? We saw I heard protection. I heard um kindness, and that is something that is the that is the uh the most important thing that your mom and I want to teach. So I'm glad to hear that you're noticing that. We want to teach you and demonstrate kindness. Uh anything else you would say about like busy working stressed out dads and moms?
SPEAKER_02Um, the kids, they can be stressful too. But like just give them grace, be kind. Even if they're annoying, just ask them nicely to stop, like Yeah.
Where Stress Shows Up
Brandon WelchOkay, so I heard grace and kindness. Those are good words. Uh I'm glad I'm doing um I'm glad I'm doing some of that. Let's talk about the fun part. Let's talk about the meat. This is what everybody wants to hear. What is something I need to work on?
SPEAKER_02Okay, so my little brother Archer, he can be um really annoying and crazy sometimes. So like I get it, you can get stressed around him, but like sometimes I feel like you just need to give him grace and Yeah.
Brandon WelchCan you tell the days that I uh have a harder time giving grace?
SPEAKER_02Yes.
Brandon WelchOkay. What do you think is going on when that happens?
SPEAKER_02Um, in your brain you're just tired and like mad kind of. Like Mad.
Brandon WelchWhat does that look like?
SPEAKER_02Um Well, yelling.
Brandon WelchYelling.
SPEAKER_02Like sometimes you yell at the boys. Okay. Like in the car when you're on a phone call, you just like tell them to stop.
Brandon WelchAnd you can I don't ever yell at you.
SPEAKER_02Well yeah, duh.
Brandon WelchUm and you can tell there's days when I don't give as much grace. Wow, thank you for being honest about that. What else? What is something else that we could work on? Um, as busy and uh sometimes stressed out business owners.
SPEAKER_02Um like on good days, I can tell, because we do highs and lows at dinner. So most of the time your low is pretty bad.
SPEAKER_01But what is my low?
SPEAKER_02What are my lows sound like Well, it's about you. So you're like, I feel really bad about this. That's basically your low. And then um your highs are like really good, so that means you had a really good day.
unknownYeah.
Brandon WelchSo yeah So you can tell by how we talk about that at dinner. That's a good thing that we do though, right? We talk about our day and we try to settle it and and get it past us, and we talk about highs at what was the high of your day and what was the low of your day at dinner as a family, right? So that's important. Um but you can pick up on that. You don't I don't even have to say anything to you, and you know if I've had a bad day, don't you?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I do.
Brandon WelchMaybe but maybe by the maybe b maybe by my patience with your brothers sometimes. Right? Yeah. Yeah. So is there anything else you want to say about that?
SPEAKER_02No, I think I said it all.
Advice For Business Owner Parents
Brandon WelchOkay. Um so for all of the busy moms and dads and all of the the people that listen to this podcast, they're building businesses, they're working really hard on marketing, and they're working really hard to provide. Is there something you would share with us that we can take into our week that we might focus on more that you see from your perspective?
SPEAKER_02Um, I feel like they can just not give up, keep going and try.
Brandon WelchKeep going and try. Okay. Anything else you want to say to the business owners of Small Business America? You've seen you've seen your mom and I work hard to um provide and build this company, right? And uh, you know when we have good days, you know when we have bad days. Um other advice you have?
SPEAKER_02Um, just like be strong, like work hard and don't give up. Yeah.
Host Takeaways On Honest Feedback
Sweet Closing And Weekly Promise
Brandon WelchOkay. Well, what I'm taking away from this is that the most important job and being your dad is one that you see uh kindness and grace, and I see that um that is that is the most noticeable thing to you. That's the first thing you mentioned was kindness and grace. And the other thing you mentioned is when I don't have kindness and grace, that's the thing you notice the most. Is that right? And you can tell when we've had a bad day, and that changes the whole house, doesn't it? Changes everybody around us. So that is a really big responsibility for me to keep doing that and focus on doing that more. Is that fair? So thank you so much for your honesty today. Uh guys, this is the most important job. This this conversation that Anna and I are having is one that uh we try to have in our household often. We try to say, what are we doing well? It is our job to lead our kids and our family in the right direction. Uh, but it is also our job to let them lead us. And so if you know anything about Frank and Maven, you know that Frank, uh Frankness, honesty is the most important value that we have. And so are you allowing your people to be honest with you, as Anna has been honest with me today? Are you allowing a safe, uh, open dialogue where that can be the truth? And are you um are you stopping to ask? Because often uh just by way of being the leader or being the one in charge, we don't do that. So I'm gonna encourage us all to say, hey, let's celebrate our wins in family and our in our jobs at work and our most important jobs at home, and let's take that uh let's take that space to say, okay, is there something I can do better for you? And I heard I heard more kindness and grace. And amen to that, right? Amen to that. So thank you so much for being here. Uh, this is a short episode. It's a sweet episode, probably the sweetest of all the sweet episodes, and I'm so grateful you will see more of Anna. She is a killer little writer. How many books have you read this year?
SPEAKER_02I have read about 45 books.
Brandon WelchShe's read 45 books this year, and she's working on writing some killer papers, and she is so smart, and I'm so proud of you. Thank you for being here. We'll be back here every Monday answering real life marketing and dad questions because marketers who can't teach you why are just a fancy lie. Have a great week.
