A phone scam doesn’t usually end with sirens, a body cam, and a courtroom verdict, but that’s exactly where this story goes. We start with an elderly Ohio man calling 911 and admitting he shot a woman outside his home, convinced he’s being targeted by criminals who are still watching him. Dispatch races to get medics on scene, deputies try to lock down the threat, and every new detail makes the situation feel more unstable.

As we piece it together, the scam itself comes into focus: a classic grandparent scam turned up to maximum pressure. The caller impersonates authority figures, demands cash, and keeps the victim on the phone for hours while the threats escalate from urgent warnings to explicit promises of murder. Then comes the moment that changes how you understand everything, including who the woman in the driveway really is.

Detectives discover she’s an Uber driver who accepted a request connected to the fraud, and her dash cam captures a quiet, uneasy wait that turns into a deadly confrontation in minutes. We walk through what the footage suggests, why “fear” and “self-defense” aren’t the same thing in court, and how the case ends with a murder conviction, an appeal, and a wrongful death lawsuit while the scammers remain unidentified. If you care about true crime, online fraud, and the real-life consequences of social engineering, this one will stick with you.

Cold Open And Setup

SPEAKER_11

There are more twists in this 20-minute body cam than an eight-episode Netflix documentary. My name is Jesse. This is Getting Out. Let's go.

SPEAKER_00

Man calls 911 to report that he's been the victim of a telephone scam that ended in a dangerous confrontation in front of his house. Now one person has been shot, and the threat may be ongoing. But it won't be long before a shocking revelation turns the entire case upside down. The following report is based on official police records, and some of the footage has never been seen before until now. In Clark County, Ohio, on the morning of March 25th, 2024, dispatchers get a 911 call from an elderly man named Bill Brock, who says he's been forced to use extreme measures to defend his life.

SPEAKER_07

A shooting? Who shot?

SPEAKER_02

Uh some black woman come to the house here.

SPEAKER_07

Who did she shoot? Okay. Okay, where did the black woman go?

SPEAKER_02

She's laying in on the driveway.

SPEAKER_07

Did you shoot her?

SPEAKER_02

Yes, I did.

SPEAKER_07

Okay. She's laying in the driveway? Yeah.

unknown

Okay. Okay.

SPEAKER_11

So he was the one that shot her, and that girl is the one that's screaming for help. What is going on?

SPEAKER_02

She's a human.

SPEAKER_07

Okay, where did you shoot her at?

SPEAKER_02

I shot her in the leg the first time, and I shot her in the shoulder. Yeah.

SPEAKER_07

Why did you do that?

SPEAKER_02

Because I was threatened that she was gonna come and kill me.

SPEAKER_00

Much more will be said about the threats Bill was getting that morning, but for now the dispatcher is concerned about the immediate emergency.

SPEAKER_07

Is anybody else with her out there? No. Okay, so she's by herself. Okay. Is that her in the background? Yes. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Even with the woman in clear need of urgent medical care, Bill says that the threat against his life may still be ongoing.

SPEAKER_02

And he was telling me he was on me and the family and everybody else around.

SPEAKER_11

But there was a girl there. So there's a guy on the phone. Bear with me. And he shot a girl, though. Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, the male said he was in the Springfield.

SPEAKER_11

That dispatcher better get ambulance over there right away, right?

SPEAKER_02

Like being outside here, because they said they had a drone over.

SPEAKER_00

The stunning details of what led up to this shooting will come out in time, but for now, police rushing to the scene have a more pressing question.

SPEAKER_07

Yes, we do. Okay, where did you put the gun? Okay, I need you to put the gun down before the officers and the medics get there. I need you to put it up somewhere.

SPEAKER_02

I understand that.

SPEAKER_07

Did you put the gun up? Um I need you to put the gun up before they arrive, okay?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, the colour.

SPEAKER_07

Okay, put the gun up for me. Um put it inside the house or something, okay?

SPEAKER_11

Yeah. Scary, but he sounds like he doesn't know what is really going on. And either do I.

SPEAKER_00

The woman is being treated by paramedics when the first deputy arrives at the scene.

SPEAKER_11

Okay, paramedics.

SPEAKER_06

You're there. Stay on one second. Are you the shooter? Okay, we won't punch you down, okay? Yeah, we'll go with that too. Mm-hmm. I'd like to. Not yet. Just let us figure it out, okay? Okay. Not under arrest, okay? You're just being being detained in the car for now, okay? Mike I said, there's a squad coming to check you, okay? Yeah. So just give us a few.

Deputies Unpack The Scam Story

SPEAKER_13

I'm sure that's see you guys out of here because I've been on this phone for a couple hours with this guy trying to save me. What? Had a nephew in jail. Had a wreck in Charleston and just kept hanging on and beating on my hand. This woman tried to scam.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, figured it. As the cops secure the scene, a mat light is ordered for the woman who is still.

SPEAKER_11

Someone called him and said his nephew was in jail and that he needed bail money. So yeah, typical old call an old person, scam them for their money. I'm thinking that's what's going on, but obviously there's a lot more to this than what meets the eye. I mean yeah, I mean stuff prepped the old thing.

SPEAKER_00

As they wait for the helicopter, the deputies begin to learn a little more about what happened here today.

SPEAKER_04

He said it's a scam somebody called and told him that his nephew was in jail. Yeah. And he paid$12,000 now. But next thing you know, he sounds like the$12,000 when he shows up here and takes$12,000 back up there. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Okay then. Yeah.

SPEAKER_12

Sir, you were the only one in your way? So we're going to be able to do it. Nobody came out.

SPEAKER_11

It's an American right there.

SPEAKER_12

She was sent out to Springfield as I was there for that. He was after Blood Money. Blood money.

SPEAKER_00

Bill tried to get some of this across in the 911 call.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, that she threatened to kill you? No, it's a guy on the phone that's been trying to get money out of me. Oh, they sent me the envelope with the money. It's always orderly people.

SPEAKER_00

The federal government warns that so-called grandparent scams are growing more common as cyber thieves use social media to gain access to consumers' personal information.

SPEAKER_11

I don't know about you, but I get scam calls all the time. I got one yesterday saying that I didn't file my taxes. I don't know why they're calling me. They should be calling obviously him. He had the$12,000 in bans ready for them.

SPEAKER_00

The FBI reported that they received nearly 200 complaints in 2023 relating to this type of fraud. This case, of course, ended differently than most.

SPEAKER_01

They're in the white swatch. They got one in the chest, one in the hip, I think, and two in the leg.

SPEAKER_09

What?

SPEAKER_00

Things are quickly worsening for the woman Bill shot.

SPEAKER_12

Hey, I know you guys got a lot going on. He doesn't have to know what her pants, her clothes, we don't have time for that working or everything at the end. Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, no worries, but I'm not sure.

SPEAKER_01

She's full of rest right now. She's full of rest.

SPEAKER_00

The woman's injuries have left her on the brink, but neither of them made it through today's incident unscathed.

SPEAKER_08

Are you injured anywhere?

SPEAKER_13

Just uh next on the side there where she slammed the cargo on me.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I think it's got batch pretty good.

SPEAKER_09

Let's detect it.

SPEAKER_11

It's in Ohio, so it's in the middle of nowhere. So they had to airlift her to a hospital. That's crazy.

SPEAKER_12

I don't think there's any blood on it. We got some blood on his ears and stuff. Yeah.

SPEAKER_11

Oh, it's a revolver. A revolver?

SPEAKER_08

I haven't got pictures over there yet. I've watched where I'm going. It's like a bolt in a China shop. It's going all over the car.

SPEAKER_00

As they head into the house, the investigators noticed the envelope full of money that Bill had prepared for the scammers.

SPEAKER_11

So he wasn't bolted.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So why did you So they called him?

SPEAKER_08

Oh, okay. I you can't say it no more. I understand. Tell him that his son's been.

SPEAKER_11

Maybe they already know because it happened so many times.

Police Answer The Scammer Call

SPEAKER_00

And then she showed up. As familiar as the scam may be, this one took an extremely rare turn. And when the man behind this scam calls the house, takes another one.

SPEAKER_08

You ready?

SPEAKER_11

No, he's calling. So that's who was calling before, and he said he wanted to answer it. Oh shit. What? Okay, I'm ready. Are you ready? Let's see what he says.

SPEAKER_08

We want him out.

SPEAKER_11

What are they gonna do? Let's see.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, hello. Hello?

SPEAKER_12

Yeah, who is it?

SPEAKER_08

Can I ask you I'm talking to?

SPEAKER_10

This is the officer speaking.

SPEAKER_08

Okay, what officer?

SPEAKER_10

Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

No, I need to know what officer, sir.

SPEAKER_10

You're gonna be in trouble.

SPEAKER_08

Okay. Let me ask you this email you sent over here, you know who she is?

SPEAKER_11

He has no idea he's talking to the cops right now.

SPEAKER_08

Okay, um, well, she's been in an accident. And this is actually an officer. It's Detective Cruz with the Clark County Sheriff's Office. I need you to dial a number. Get this number so I can explain more to you.

SPEAKER_11

You think he's doing that?

SPEAKER_08

Hello? Hello?

SPEAKER_11

You there? Hello.

SPEAKER_03

If you'd like to make a call.

SPEAKER_08

Well, they know that she's been in an accident, so they can't say we didn't tell them.

SPEAKER_00

As the deputies have their first interaction with the phone scammers, Bill remains shaken by the grim events that have shaped this morning.

SPEAKER_04

Okay, I can see what's going on. Okay.

SPEAKER_09

I understand. I've been in a shootout before. I can really understand. Oh, he's right now, dude. I got it.

SPEAKER_08

Hello.

unknown

Yes, I'm sorry, we got the connected there.

SPEAKER_08

Okay.

SPEAKER_11

He called back. Dude, thank God this is Ohio, and they weren't ready to like trace the call.

SPEAKER_08

She was in an accident. This is Detective Cruz with the Clark Town Inseriff's office. She was taken to the hospital. I need you to call so we can get more information on her. It was a serious accident. We'll just say that. Yes. No, uh, she's not doing well. She just said she was taken to the hospital. I'm not gonna tell you that until you meet me, so I can make sure you're family or something like that.

SPEAKER_12

Okay, I'm gonna be there. Um, thank you. It's the gentleman that was there.

SPEAKER_08

Huh?

SPEAKER_12

The gentleman that lived there. Where is he?

SPEAKER_08

He's talking to us, so I need you to come.

SPEAKER_11

Okay, thank you. He just shot you, bitch.

SPEAKER_08

20 minutes, get ready. Let's see if he shows up.

SPEAKER_00

But now, knowing the police are on the scene and Bill is talking to them, the man never arrives. Meanwhile, Bill gets stitches for his head wound.

SPEAKER_12

Yeah, I'm glad you got it around for the threatened to kill me.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, Dan isn't me too. Because yeah, the threats as well. So you have uh a female that probably has someone else out there that, you know, you never know.

SPEAKER_00

Bill says the scam caller made many death threats, but today's events only bring about one actual death. Uh 61-year-old Loletha Hall, the woman he shot this morning, dies in surgery at Kettering Hospital. According to Bill's friends, his fears lingered. He stayed with his girlfriend Becky for the following days, hiding his vehicles because he thought the scammers would find him and kill him. But even today, the cops believe they have the basic picture of what happened.

SPEAKER_09

He's already given consent. Do you comply with all law enforcement aspects? He established the person that came to his house was in the wrong and he is the victim of a possible robbery.

SPEAKER_11

Do they have stand your ground law, though, there? That's what I worry about. It's Ohio. And we saw how that was in Clayton County jail, which you can watch that video. I'll link it at the end. He shot someone penetrated.

SPEAKER_00

But this investigation is about to take its most unexpected turn yet.

SPEAKER_11

Another one.

SPEAKER_00

Detectives soon realized that Loletha Hall was working for Uber on the morning that Bill was being targeted over the phone. And just as Bill had no idea who he was really talking to that day, Loletha too was unaware that the pickup and delivery order she accepted that morning was part of a sophisticated scam. At 1052, she arrives at Bill's house.

SPEAKER_10

No.

SPEAKER_00

Loletha's dash cam shows her waiting in Bill's driveway, apparently uncertain about the next step.

SPEAKER_10

Don't tell me she had no idea. Dude, did he hire an Uber driver? I don't know what I'm supposed to go to.

SPEAKER_00

Bill had been on the phone with the scammers for nearly two hours at that point. They claimed to be a lawyer and a judge calling on behalf of Matt, his girlfriend Becky's grandson, who had supposedly been arrested after a negligent car accident. At one point, they even put someone posing as Matt himself on the phone. The ruse was good enough to fool Bill for a while, but as Lolitha was out in the driveway trying to decide what to do, he was beginning to realize that something wasn't right. Bill says that the plan was for him to deliver the$12,000 to a parking lot near the courthouse where he would meet with a woman in a black Acura. But when he begins to catch on to the scam, the men on the phone drop the act and tell him that the woman has come to him. He looks out the window and sees a black Acura parked in the driveway.

SPEAKER_10

Oh my God, because the Uber app tells you what kind of car they're driving.

SPEAKER_11

So the scammer knew and she couldn't find the door. So she got out of her car. That's a five-star Uber driver. She got out of her car. Usually they'll just bounce. I guess Ohio, you don't get many rides, but in all seriousness, she got out of her car to knock on the door to get him because she didn't know which one it was. Hold on.

SPEAKER_05

There is no belt for me. There's no belt for me.

SPEAKER_00

Loletha, clearly uneasy about going to the door, remains in the driveway for nearly a half hour total. In the meantime, Bill says the scammers were getting increasingly hostile. They gave him a stark warning. If they didn't get a call from their woman confirming that the money had been handed over, they would kill him. And those closest to him.

SPEAKER_11

That sophisticated dude. And the dude on the phone didn't sound Indian or anything either. He sounded like he was local or some shit.

SPEAKER_05

Is there anyone you can let them know I'm here?

SPEAKER_00

It's not clear if Lolita is talking to anyone or merely rehearsing. But finally, just as the scammers are threatening Bill's life over the phone, oh, that's true.

SPEAKER_11

She could just be like talking it up because she knows she has a camera in the car, too. I didn't even think of that. What is going on?

SPEAKER_00

Lolitha decides she's done waiting. Lolitha heads in the direction of Bill's back door. According to Bill, she walked into his covered sunroom area through the door facing the driveway, proceeded to open the storm door leading into his house, and said, I'm here for the package. Bill says that was when he drew his pistol and asked for her phone. Less than two minutes after Loletha was seen walking toward the house, she is seen again. And this time, she's not alone.

SPEAKER_11

Wait, I'm not familiar with Uber, so I don't know. But can you request to have something picked up for you? That doesn't sound right. Leave a comment below and let me know because I'm not sure. He's walking her to the car, too. She's told her to stop.

SPEAKER_03

I'll call 911. Oh.

SPEAKER_11

Oh, that wasn't the show. You're not leaving. Sorry. No, you're not. You're not leaving my house.

SPEAKER_03

Stop.

SPEAKER_11

Whoa, I don't think he really had a reason to shoot her, dude. Regardless, he didn't she didn't threaten him.

SPEAKER_10

I'll shoot the other leg. Oh no, buddy.

SPEAKER_11

There's no one around for miles. You couldn't even find a door. You think there's gonna be another person around?

SPEAKER_00

But even as Bill calls for help along with her, he will later say he still saw Lolita, and more specifically, the phone she was carrying, as a dangerous threat to his survival.

SPEAKER_03

What the fuck is he doing?

SPEAKER_00

But Bill is fixated on one thing.

SPEAKER_10

Oh man.

SPEAKER_00

No additional gunshots are heard, and soon Bill calls 911.

SPEAKER_11

Here they've been shooting. He didn't know about dashboard cams, bro. He thought he didn't have any cameras, so he was good, but she's an Uber driver. She's got that dashboard cam.

SPEAKER_02

Uh, some black woman come to the house here.

SPEAKER_00

Roughly two weeks after the shooting, Bill's lawyer told Clark County detectives that he would not be submitting to a formal interview. The next day, he was arrested and charged with murder. At trial, the prosecutors argued that a reasonable person would not shoot a defenseless woman multiple times to protect themselves from words of a scammer. The jury agreed, and in January 2026, William Brock was convicted of murder, two counts of felony murder, kidnapping, and felonious assault. Kidnapping At sentencing, Lolita's son Mario called his mother his best friend. She didn't get to grow old like William Brock, he said. Instead, she sits on my mantle in an urn. William Brock, 83, was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison, plus an additional and consecutive six years for firearm specification.

SPEAKER_11

Consecutive means that he's gonna be doing 15 years and then another six, so it's really twenty one years to life. So he's eighty-three now. When he unsentenced, he's gonna die in prison.

SPEAKER_00

He has filed an appeal. In March 2025, the estate of Lolita Hall filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Bill and the unnamed scammers, none of whom have been identified or arrested to this day. The lawsuit is ongoing.

SPEAKER_11

If that didn't throw you a furrow loop, I don't know what will. But thanks for sticking around. Again, my name is Jesse. This is Getting Out. Like, subscribe, it really helps. And the next video will be like over here, I think. I'll put it over here for you.
