If you’ve ever wondered why some creators feel instantly trustworthy while others feel like walking ads, this conversation puts language to it. We’re joined by Charleston creator and consultant Barb Skidmore, the voice behind Blushing Alpacas and the owner of Outside Center Consulting, to talk about what authenticity actually looks like in personal branding and influencer marketing.
We get into the real mechanics of turning content into a business: choosing brand partnerships you’ll genuinely use, setting expectations around deliverables, and understanding the hidden labor behind a “simple post.” Barb also shares what she sees from the brand side as someone who runs social media marketing for restaurants, catering companies, and real estate, including how to keep up with Instagram Reels and TikTok trends without losing your voice. We also dig into paid media basics, like when boosting helps, when targeted ads matter, and how goals like reach, clicks, and conversions change the plan.
Then we go to the part businesses rarely hear out loud: comment pods, bots, and inflated engagement. Barb explains what to look for, what questions to ask before you pay, and why great content still has value even when the audience signals are messy. You’ll also pick up travel hacks using Google Flights alerts and deal tools, plus the mindset that keeps her work sustainable.

Meet Barb Skidmore
SPEAKER_03What's up, guys? Uh Stephanie Barrow here, as always. I'm excited to be back with my friend Rachel, a Stephanie Barrow Consulting Marketing Digital Firm here in Charleston, and clients all over the U.S. So uh keeping it real, keeping it busy. But we have someone very exciting in the house.
SPEAKER_02We have Barb Skidmore. The creator behind Blushing Alpacas and the owner of Outside Center Consulting. Barb has built an incredible presence here in Charleston and brings a really thoughtful perspective on how creators and brands can work together in a way that actually drives impact. Barb, welcome to the podcast.
SPEAKER_03Thank you. Yes, we're so excited. Thanks for having me. Killer Instagram feed.
SPEAKER_02For real. For real.
SPEAKER_03So tell us a little bit. So how long have you lived in Charleston?
SPEAKER_04I've lived in Charleston almost 15 years now. So now where are you originally from? So originally from Ohio, um, but then we moved to Boston, Massachusetts, and then Boston. Yes, and then out to Tucson, Arizona. So I have my master's from uh University of Arizona, and then back to Ohio and now in South Carolina, Charleston.
SPEAKER_03We were bonding over mother life in the greenery. It was a good time.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, she has two Austin children.
SPEAKER_04One in college and one in Clemson and Flynn is eighth grade area. So hopefully, well, I'll be moving on next year. You can't make out probably for me, but yes, next time.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So when he gets well, if she if she goes to Wando. No, Oceanside.
SPEAKER_03See? Yes. I'll move the secret and get into Oceanside. I'm already campaigning. Mayor Haney, I hope you're listening. Mama Bear like to go to Oceanside. Yeah. It's all lottery. So you just put the name in. I know. I know. Fingers crossed.
SPEAKER_04But once your one is in, the other one gets in. So really. So he's all he's automatically in because my daughter graduated from there. So that's how I got in. How she got in.
What Blushing Alpacas Actually Does
SPEAKER_02So Barb, let's start at the beginning. For someone who meets you at a dinner party, how do you describe what you do?
SPEAKER_04Um, I say I own a marketing company, um, outside center consulting, and then I say I'm also an influencer um in the Charleston area and for travel and food. And then I also say I'm a writer, so um have bylines and conde nast and eater. So and then I say I'm a mother. And I, you know, I'm married to the half. So the cleaner of the house, you know, those kind of things.
SPEAKER_03How long have you been working on like your personal brand for your influencing?
SPEAKER_04So it's probably been about gosh, I should really look back, but um maybe seven years, maybe eight. Um I don't know. Yes, pre-COVID. Um, yeah, a couple years before COVID started, um, because I was working in a hospital before COVID hit. So thankfully I'd already left.
SPEAKER_02So I guess like how did that switch up work? Like during COVID, were you kind of bored and kind of starting to like make content? How did you experiment with that?
SPEAKER_04So I started my business before COVID hit. Yeah. So I was working, um, I'm a I have a master's of science um in speech language pathology, but I was working at East Cooper and Roper and Trident. Like I was going all over the place um because I did the modified barium swallows. Okay. I know that's a whole random thing, but uh so I would go everywhere. Um, and then I would be also doing my own brand, which was fun and um, you know, kind of like the outlet. And then I started having um people ask me, Well, how did you how how are you doing this or why you could you do it for me kind of thing. So that's kind of how it started. And at one point I was I was in the car on our way to the airport to go to Iceland, and I was trying to finish my CUs for speech therapy, and my husband's like, What are you doing? Like, you don't even do that anymore. You need to stop. So that's how it like flipped over.
SPEAKER_03You've got a love, supportive husband. Yes, thankfully.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_03I love your brand name. So can you tell us about how you came up with it?
SPEAKER_04Well, Blashing Alpaca's um kind of started with another girl as well. Um, and then she just kind of stopped um doing it. But it we hiked the Machu Picchu Trail, um, and so it was kind of some of that as well. So you see all the alpacas up on the top and the female version, you know. Um, but yeah, so initially started there were two alpacas, and then the one alpaca kind of she was like, I'm done, I don't I'm not doing this. So now your hubby is the alpaca. Yes. Yes. Or the person that carries all of my stuff. Yes.
SPEAKER_03So can you tell the people who don't aren't familiar with your Instagram page what kind of content you post?
SPEAKER_04Uh yes, I do mostly food, Charleston, Savannah. Um, I do a lot of travel. Um, and then, you know, kind of anything that's kind of cool and happening in the area. Um, so like the Charleston Open that's happening right now. Um, so that's on my page. So anything that would be of note in the area.
SPEAKER_03Um so much your feed. One of my top questions is like, how many countries have you been to?
SPEAKER_04It's great question. So we counted the other day. I've been to 32 countries. Wow. Wow. And my husband's been to probably 50. So I have a little bit of catching up to this. Um, no, as an adult. Um, started when I was 18. And my mom, who's this is a great trick. She said, you can go on spring break with your friends for your senior um trip, or I'll take you to Switzerland with me. And I said, Switzerland. And so a choice. That's a great choice. But then all the girls that went to uh Florida ended up getting in a lot of trouble. So I was like, wow, that was a great choice for me.
Travel As Content And Family Life
SPEAKER_02Oh gosh. And I think something cool that because I know Barb personally, but she kind of does the same for her kids. So you want to talk about like how you gift experiences rather than items?
SPEAKER_04So for Christmas, my kids get um a trip, so an experience. So they do get other presents from their grandparents. Um, so they do get some of those things. But um, every Christmas morning they open up a clue and they have to go around the house and it's like a scavenger hunt, and then they have to figure out like where they're going um based on the clues. And then at the end, um, they'll have like this last time they got Scotland. So we had a picture of the So no Disney in Scotland. Let's do that. That's amazing. Wow. I'm not a Disney person, but um, I know there are a lot of people who are, yeah, they're wrong, but no, I'm just not um yeah. So they get they get those gifts um for Christmas, or my daughter for her um high school graduation, she picked a place to go. Where did she want to go for her? She went to Barbados, so cool, yeah. Yeah, so which is the most expensive country in the world. I did not know this until I got there, and I was like, oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_03Oh wow, yeah. So that is super cool. I've taken my kids to all inclusives at Punta Cana, but I have not taken them to Scotland or anywhere cool yet. They are not live and large. That's awesome. That's cool in their own way, though, Stephanie. Yeah, I mean, it's just fine. It's fine. Okay. We're not we're not up to your standards, but that is so cool. So, do you have any fun summer plans coming up?
SPEAKER_04Um, well, we are we have we have a cabin in West Virginia, so we'll be going up there. Um, we have um a condo beach house in Tybee, so we'll definitely be going there. We don't tend to go abroad during the summer, um, just because that's when everybody else is going abroad. So we tend to stick, um, we're going in May for Scotland and then um we'll be around the US during that time.
SPEAKER_03Now, for your brand, when you do all this traveling, are you partnering with different sometimes I'm partnering, sometimes I'm not.
SPEAKER_04It depends on if I want to work during that vacation or not. So um I will always partner with certain people depending on what it is that they want me to do. Um, so you know, bags. I I only bring a backpack. My kids are only allowed to bring a backpack for um our broad because we need to get out, you know, it just it's one of those things that I cannot hear the rollerbag on the the, you know, the cobblestone click, click, click, click, click. So we wear, we do only backpacks, only carry-ons. Um, so um, I don't even know what the question was now. It was just more about partnering. Oh, yeah. So partnering. So then, so like if the backpack is something that I would wear, then yes. If it's something that I wouldn't wear, like if it only has one shoulder or whatever and it's not comfortable, I won't wear it. But like um, bags, like satchel, I brought one here today, but um they always send me bags um and they will ask me to do promo stuff with them all the time. And those are easy because they're they they know me so well that they're like, okay, you want a crossbody, you want to say yes, because it's authentic to him. Yes. And so that's an easy one. But I've you know, I've partnered with when we went to Patagonia, I partnered with a couple of those like Osprey and those kind of brands that were able to, they basically paid for the trip and then gave me the items. So that was lovely. But sometimes I don't want to do all the work.
SPEAKER_02That's just when you're like choosing which I'm sure you get reached out to by a lot of brands and different companies. So, how do you go through that process of seeing like, okay, this is someone who I want to work with rather than maybe this isn't authentic to who I am or who my followers would be, what they'd be interested in.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. So basically, do I like it or do I not? So um, so DJI, DJ I just uh reached out to me for you know, drones and um microphones, and those are all things that yeah, I'll I I like the stuff, it's great, I'll use it. Yeah, let's talk partnership. Um, but I've been approached by many brands and there's nothing wrong with them, but I never D9, D8 seltzers are not my thing. I I don't drink them. I don't I'm not going to act like I'm gonna drink them just because they're gonna pay me. So I won't, I just say no, I'm sorry, that's just not my brand, but thank you. Um maybe reach out to this person.
SPEAKER_02Okay. It's a good way to put it. Like, you know, give them a different direction to go. Yeah. But I think that's really unique because I think so many people do just take on so much PR for the free stuff or the payment, and like it gets lost in translation because you're on their page and you're like, wait, I thought they were a traveler, but they're talking about, you know, what color lip gloss? So you know, like it just gets oversight.
SPEAKER_03What's happening on these people's pages? It's not authentic to them at all anymore. Yeah. So yeah.
SPEAKER_02Is that the same thing with like restaurants and um I guess events that are happening in Charleston? If it doesn't feel authentic to you, then you won't be attending or promoting it.
SPEAKER_04Yes. Like I won't go to a place if I don't like it. So um, if I go to a place and I've never been, um, there's always something about a restaurant to like, like, is it the view, is it the drinks, is it the food, is it the people, is it the whatever? So whatever it is that maybe I find that would be the best is what I usually highlight in that restaurant if I had never been before and um you know, to show what what it is.
SPEAKER_03So I work with a lot of clients in Charleston and um around where's the best way do you feel like for people to connect with you? Is it is it to go through your website through the DMU, is it to look at your stuff and make sure it's all you know on the same voice? What's what's the thing?
SPEAKER_04Um yeah, I mean DMs are great. Um I check those often. Um emails are great. I check those as well. Um well all of them. Filter in, but yes, um, those would be the best way. I would say if you look at my page, it's a pretty, you know, I'm pretty cut and dry. Not really. I mean, I do a lot of things, but I, you know, I would say I'm lifestyle, but I have a huge emphasis on food, drink, what to do in Charleston, what to do in Savannah, where to if you're if you're traveling, how to travel, why you travel this way. Um, and then just kind of funny things are on my page too. So if you don't like the humor, um, like, you know, I just posted something like, Where's my husband? He should be pumping my my gas, you know, like I why am I pumping my gas? Where is he? You know, like and he he just he sent me a message right after and he's like, Really? What a good sport. Yes, really. Why did you not fill up my tank? He's like, I'm working.
SPEAKER_03That's so funny.
SPEAKER_04No excuse. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So are you creating all of your own content or are you having a team doing it for you? No, it's on me. I love that for you. Yeah, that's awesome. How well I I look at her stuff, so I see what she kind of content. Are you using certain apps, that kind of thing?
SPEAKER_04No, I well, I mean, I use specific kinds of things, you know. I use TikTok and I use um, but I don't use any AI if that's what you're asking. Um, I don't use anything like that.
SPEAKER_03I it seems very authentic to your to your to yourself.
SPEAKER_04Yes. So if like I said, I'll I after I went to an event last night and then after we went to Hanks, and I love Hanks. And so I texted the chef and he just came out, and so Hanks gets a post, not because they off you know invited me, but because I love them. So I'll put them up on my page because you know it was very great interaction, food's great, uh people should know about it.
SPEAKER_03I think a lot of people know about Hanks, but you should really go back to Hanks if you haven't. Are they still having live music at night? I don't know. Okay, because that's that's a good that's a good place to go on a Friday night. Have a drink, see a view.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Speaking of events that you since you're invited to so many cool ones, which one would you say is your favorite? Like w at least within the last year or two that you could think of.
Picking Brand Partners With Integrity
SPEAKER_04Um, well, I do like the Charleston Open. I think that's cool. I think um There was a party yesterday, my friends were at there were so many of you at that party. I wasn't, no, I was at a different event. But yes. Um I got to meet some of the you know players and you know, so that's a cool experience. Um cultura opening was really fun because they moved from one building to the next and seeing how they, you know, um changed, you know, all of the things about what they were and what they are now. Um, so that was a cool one.
SPEAKER_03Um do you do any of the Charleston wine dudes say?
SPEAKER_04So I do. Um I'm not I'm not one of their I never apply for their influencer program because uh it's a lot of work. I think all the influencers that do it do a great job, and but they're you have to do so many, and um my son has soccer tournaments. Yeah, or you know, I was in Columbia on Saturday for his soccer tournament, and I refuse to miss my kids' events for an event. And that has been my very sticking point. So I was supposed to be at the Charleston Open on Monday night, and my son had a flag football game, and so I was like, I'm sorry, I cannot make it.
SPEAKER_03You've got to prioritize it. Yeah, and I love that. But how do you so how are you monetizing all of your partnerships, the ones that you do say yes to?
SPEAKER_04Um, so monetization is it's it it's twofold. So I'm monetize because I run a bunch of accounts, so obviously I'm making money that way. Um, but then also when brands reach out, um like bigger brands, you know, those that's when you start negotiating, like how much, you know, how many, what do you, what are you expecting from this? What are you doing from this? Those kind of things. So it always has to be do I like the product? And how much work and effort is it gonna be in order for me to get the client everything that they need? And I'm kind of a perfectionist in that area because I really want everybody to be happy that works with me. So I want it to perform well. I want you to have all of my stuff so you can use it. I want all of the things so that you can have that for for you.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we haven't touched on your consulting business. We talk a little bit about sure.
SPEAKER_04What would you like to know?
SPEAKER_03I would like to know what you specialize in.
SPEAKER_04Uh well, social media, yeah, uh, marketing, um, email marketing, all those kind of things, um, trends, TikToks, all of that. So I run a bunch of restaurants and catering companies and realtors and you know, I have all the things um with that. And um I love all of my clients. And so I've learned that if there's a client that maybe isn't really working out, like I'll cut ties with them earlier than they would cut maybe cut ties with me just because I, you know, I want everybody to be happy. Right. And so if I'm not happy, and or if you're not happy, then you know, we'll just figure something else out again.
SPEAKER_03A referral of some a couple of and uh real real estate agents in Mount Puzzle that have really good social media. I'm not gonna put you in the spot asking who you work with, but there's some of them that are really good stuff.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and so bringing that like you're you're selling Charleston, you're not just selling yourself. So I was very clear with some of my people, like, okay, well, you have to go out to dinner and you have to video it and you have to, you know, those kind of things um in order to get the content. It's just second nature to me when I walk in somewhere, my phone is up. Yeah, you know, picture's picture picture, and my kids are they're well used to it. And they have a great photo album of everything that they've done. That's horror. That's so cute.
SPEAKER_02So, what are your thoughts, I guess, on like paid media? Like, is that ad something that you test for yourself or clients? Um, yeah. Talk about that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so paid media media is great. Um, some people do it really well. Um some people do very well at boosting versus the paid ads. So it really depends on what you're looking for. Like, are you looking to bring somebody to your page? Are you looking to sell something off of your website? Are you looking so it's really what are you looking for in order for that to be successful, in my opinion? If you just throw money at something, well, if you throw money at something, usually it does do pretty well. But if you just throw money at something and it's not targeted, then you you kind of lose your money.
SPEAKER_02Like they're not converting. Yeah, they're gonna check out your website, what do the CTA, but they might not become a customer. Correct. Okay.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I can see that, especially because a lot of people aren't really utilizing the different formats. If you're using you're talking about meta-ad specifically, you have all these different options where you can do you know, size for Instagram, story, reels, 10-second reels, 15-second reels. So if you're not doing it right, I can see that not really working for people. So yeah.
SPEAKER_04Do you run ads for yourself ever? Or no, unless it's a branding ad. So a lot of times that's in the contract. So branding ads will go up um on those aspects. Um, or if it's a giveaway, like I'm doing a giveaway and people like the um the five businesses are willing to put money towards boosting it. So it's not really an ad, it's a boost. Okay. So that's when you'll see a sponsored post on that.
SPEAKER_02Okay. So I feel like when like influencers do sponsor posts and they make it really obvious, it does the opposite. Like you don't want to track. Yeah. Because you're like, they're being paid to talk about this, do they really like it? Um, so I feel like when you kind of are talking about like finding brands that you really like because it's authentic to you, it's something you like. I feel like you build a lot of trust with your following. When you're posting about a brand, they know Barb has vetted this company. She's not just posting it for a paycheck. Correct.
SPEAKER_04But then also you have to realize that some of these brands, like that's part of their they want to boost it. So like some of these, some people will um like DJI, they were like, we will be boosting whatever you put up as a sponsored post. And that's fine. They take it and they boost it. Um, but so some of those are maybe influencers are more just like, well, that's just part of the gig. That's just what you do. So you have to look at it kind of like that too. So I I know there's a couple of people that do Lake Pajamas, and then so you see them talking about it, and then you see a sponsored ad, and it's with two of them, and that's the brand, that's that's the brand sponsoring that. So um, it's not them personally.
SPEAKER_02Okay, okay. It's interesting.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I have a problem with influencers because they kind of do the homework for me. So if I like their feed and I want a restaurant suggestion, I will go and look at, you know, and okay, well, I've never heard of that place, let's do that. Or um, I even have friends who just do like Amazon and I'm like, well, that looks cute on them, and I don't have to go hunt for this. Wonderful. I will just buy it right now. So that's what I th when I look at your page, a lot of times I go for like food. Food suggestions that kind of date night out type that vibe.
SPEAKER_02So Yeah. Yeah. And I think I I want to say this award correct, but you were you won the best influencer um in Charleston for camera for the camera awards.
SPEAKER_03I thought it was best social media marketing.
SPEAKER_02Best social media magnets. There we go. There you go. Yes, exciting. So congrats on that. I forgot to bring your award. That was one of the first things I asked. I was like the right bring your award. At some point I'll get a picture with it. I know. I have it. We live too close to not drop it off. I I will be dropping off. Okay. Yeah, I took it. Yes.
unknownYes.
SPEAKER_03Mike Mike had Kelly's for like a year.
SPEAKER_04Oh, he still has it. Okay. And I was um nominated for top food influencer in Charleston for the city paper. So that's like I've been nominated, I think, six times now. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_03So the city paper has a great party. I've lifted it up a little bit. Best of party is a good time.
SPEAKER_02No, I haven't gone. We'll have to check it out.
SPEAKER_03Well, one thing I love about those parties is that they have food from all the different restaurants. I just go and eat. And that's it's a theme party. I don't have any reason to dress up. So I'm like wearing a 90s outfit eating like whole's food. I'm like, this is great. This is good. It usually falls on like a Tuesday, though. It does. It's guessing it falls on a school day. It definitely does. That's so yes.
SPEAKER_02So I am curious. You are really good. Um, I've worked with Barb before, and like it doesn't really matter what the business does. You're so good at finding whether it's a trending reel, a sound, and then relating it to the business. How do you keep up with that when there's a new trend, a new sound coming out every other day? Well, I'm on social media a lot.
SPEAKER_04So yes, I see, I see a lot. So I see a lot on different, you know, pages and on my page and all of those kind of things. So that research component of it is kind of it's always there. And so if I see something that I'm like, oh, this is cute, I can change this to to this company or this company or whatever, I put it into a folder, I put it into a file so that we can remember to do that. Um, but trends, you know, trend the trends go quickly and then they fall. So you just have to jump on those trends as quickly as possible and then move along.
SPEAKER_02So do you have any like clients that don't love being like in front of the camera that you're like pushing them and they're like they're paying, they're like obviously they're a client of yours, but they're like, we don't want to do that. So how do you navigate that situation?
SPEAKER_04Well, if they really don't want to be on camera, I don't make somebody be on camera that hates it. Like if they really don't want to be on camera, we can figure a way that the employees are on camera or you know, something is able to be on camera. I do show them the stats of like, you know, you will do better if you're on camera versus if you're not. Um, however, you know, if they really don't want to be, we'll have to figure another way around it. But most of my people are pretty good. I have lawn owner who hates it. But every time he gets in front of the camera and I he is like, I sound like an idiot. Sound like an idiot, and it does so well. And so yesterday he said, That one did really well. I guess I have to keep doing it. I'm like, so I get to put you on camera more. And he's like, Yes. So, you know, it's just trying to get them. But it's been almost a year for me to get him in front of the camera. Oh no, yeah. So he's like, Okay.
SPEAKER_02Now he's now he's gonna slowly look forward to it. He's like, Barb's coming, film day.
SPEAKER_04Yes, and I always like don't take social media as seriously as some people take it. Like I think that that's you know, it's social media still, like you said before, you're not gonna cure cancer here. So we're like here to have fun. That's what social media is supposed to be about.
SPEAKER_03Like, right.
SPEAKER_04So let's do that.
SPEAKER_03I keep asking all of my marketer friends, and specifically probably my mom friends, are y'all familiar with Cover Star?
SPEAKER_05No.
Consulting Work And Paid Media Choices
SPEAKER_03So it is like the new, it's like a TikTok, but it's for tweens, basically. So my daughter has it, but like brands like you know, Lulu, Abercrombie, and Fitch, and all of them are discovering it now. It's basically like TikTok, but they're doing teen appropriate dances. So is it like is there like security measures like to keep it? They say that there are. Okay. I don't know. Um I I have uh obviously because my child has it and I watch all her stuff on there, but it's funny how brands are like adopting it now.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. For the younger population as they grow.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so for you know, the like the neat o thing is like a big thing right now, but all of a sudden brands are on it now too. So I'm wondering if it's gonna become like a thing.
SPEAKER_02I wonder, do your girls like um do they want to become like I keep hearing younger kids being like, I want to be an influencer, I want to be like a YouTuber.
SPEAKER_03Well, like it's like 1100 followers. Wow, so it's a little, it's a little daunting because she's 10. Yeah, yeah. So I'm on it, but they're all mostly like other cheerleaders across the the nation that are following her. That's cool. But it is interesting, so I'm wondering if that will become more of a thing that people are like have on their radar.
SPEAKER_04Well, it's funny the ads that I come across like Snapchat and like even Chat B GPT, like the ads are starting to like you know filter over. So it's just wherever people are, they're just starting to kind of it's terrifying.
SPEAKER_03It's always something coming out you gotta stay on top of. Yes, correct.
SPEAKER_04Speaking of feeling tech stack if you have any kind of uh technologies that you're using at post-production or pre-production or anything like that, and you can show there's a lot of younger influencers are also like Yeah, no, I I have not been using W from Air or Yeah, I mean I use Canva, I use like all those different kind of things, but um There's a lot of short like Cap Cut Yeah, I use Cap Cut a lot.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I remember you saying before that like if you were to film or edit or sorry, edit on the platform that you're posting to, does like did you Yeah, they reward you.
SPEAKER_04So like if you're gonna add it on like um edits, for example, for Instagram, like you're gonna get a higher visual on that if you than if you were to edit off of something else, like a character.
SPEAKER_03Ours is so like realistic to her, it feels like you're doing it right there in the app. Yeah, and in the best way possible. It doesn't feel like you're putting, you know, all the craziness on it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, no, I do a lot of the stuff on the in the app. Well, that's the other thing is if you even the the writing, the the typing, the the graphics on it, like they recognize if it's not on. Wow, you know. So same with TikTok. Um, you know, and then the TikTok sounds won't TikTok won't recognize if it comes from Instagram, but Instagram will recognize if it comes from tech tick tock and throw it into that. So it's like these like competing platforms. Yeah. So but they're bait they're basically, I mean, not the same, but they're basically the same. I mean, reels and tick tock are the same, but now they're moving to you know static pictures over on TikTok and you know, all the things.
SPEAKER_03I wish Instagram would allow you to have links. That's my only oh yeah. Eventually, can we have the links work and be live in the posts?
SPEAKER_02You just have to get in touch with Justin Bieber. Whenever he asks for something, they do it. Apple changed the whole dictation of the phone because of it.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that yeah, yeah, I know. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02I'll let you know his number.
SPEAKER_03There you go. There you go.
SPEAKER_05Yes.
SPEAKER_03So what I feel like the the word, the buzzword influencer has been around for like at least 10 years now. Do you see that just staying the course?
SPEAKER_04So, you know, as I met an event last night, and I'm probably one of the oldest ones there. Um, yeah, a lot of young influencers are coming in. So I feel it's it might start getting a little too yeah, it's crowd, it's crowded, but it I think it might get a little oversaturated. Um, so I don't exactly know. I don't know if brands will consider influencers as important later on. I'm not sure. It's kind of an it's an interesting um trajectory of like in what's gonna happen in four or five years. I think that the people that are with you, so I would say Facebook will stay the way that it is. So um the older people are, the more likely they're gonna hang on. Um versus when they're younger and they're kind of, you know, and who knows what's gonna happen you know, pop up, like I said in the next whatever, and like Snapchat was not around, you know, and then all of a sudden it's here and everybody uses it for communication, you know. So that's just to organize their prom groups, you know. So instead of text me, you know, text messaging, I'm like, why don't you just text?
SPEAKER_03Uh, positive disappears and you can do shady things probably. Yeah. I think a lot of it's just yeah communication. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So, but yes. So what are your kids? And I mean, your husband's very supportive, but like when you first started, did your did was your daughter and son were they like embarrassed, were they weirded out? Like, how did that go? They're pretty young.
SPEAKER_04My son was like four, maybe five. So he just whatever he didn't care. And then even now he's like, whatever. He just doesn't care. Just don't put me in it unless I approve it, kind of thing, you know. Um, my daughter has been, you know, oh yeah, let's make this one, or she'll send me something and be like, oh, we went to Argentina, I did the like uh you perhaps the salad, and I was like, you know, you know, and she was, you know, right there with me, like cutting the steak, you know. So she's good. Um, but when we started, no, my parents don't have social media, so they had no idea what I was even doing there and just were like, Are you paying your bills or what are you doing? So um, yeah.
SPEAKER_03So Yeah, whenever I ask my kid even tape me at all, she's like, God, this is so cringe. Wow, like, I agree, I'm sorry, I don't want to ask you.
SPEAKER_04I always say, What what do you care? You know, like with kids it's different, but like what do you care, you know, what goes out at that point? Like, especially when you're trying to grow, yeah. It's like, you know, what what's it gonna be, you know?
SPEAKER_03So that's really, really funny.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So did you have anything cool coming up?
SPEAKER_04Well, I I leave for Paris on Tuesday. Nice. Yes. How many times have you been? Um, a lot. So my my husband graduated from high school there. Um, so we go back. That's where my husband proposed. Um we've our children have been there four or five times. So we've I don't know, I don't know how many times, maybe ten times we've been to Paris a lot. Just to get escargot, like on the corridor at every pub. It's nice because we get off the plane and my husband speaks French. So that's very handy. Yes, it's very, very handy. He also speaks Spanish, so we're wow, we like that one too.
SPEAKER_03I love it. Yeah. My favorite thing about Paris was that you would just go at like 10 o'clock at night and get escargot. It was ten bucks, you know. Wow. It's so cheap. Yeah. Covered in garlic. And then you would go and you would get what's the ice cream that looks like a rose called the not the gelato, but maybe something like that. But it's oh it's the salty caramel. I'm I'm more of the baguettes and the cheese and the wine. Sugar. So I'll I'll do all this whole this will all be on your social media coming up.
SPEAKER_04Yes, of course. And we're staying with one of his like families, so we're actually staying in a castle, which actually is really cool. Yeah, it's really cool because they have like the third floor of this castle um was occupied by the Nazis, and it so all the walls were uh knocked down, so and it's still it's still like that. So I'm kind of cold. It's a lot of history. A lot of history. They occupied the castles because they knew they wouldn't get blown up.
SPEAKER_02Mmm, interesting. Yeah. I feel like we talked about a lot of good things with uh being an influencer. Right. What would you say, like for all these people who want to become an influencer? Like, was there a story where a brand partnership went went bad, or is there what is the what is the ugly side of being an influencer?
SPEAKER_04Um yeah, so well, sometimes people when you say influencer, they roll their eyes. So there's all of me was thinking there's gotta be another war for influencer. Um yeah, so there's that. So I usually that's why I always start with I own my own marketing company and I'm an influencer in Charleston. So I usually do that. So um, because there is a lot of like eye rolling of oh, okay, you know, which didn't used to be, I feel like more so now. Um, I'm not sure why, probably because oversaturation, but um, so there's that. Um yeah, I mean, there's been a couple times where I've been contracted or asked or whatever, and I've gone and I did not care for it or I didn't like it. And so there's that like awkward, yeah, that like hard thing about like what am I gonna do here? You know, kind of thing. Or do I go back to them and say, like, I can't put this on my page, which I have done before. Um, and then here are the reasons why. But if you want me to do, you know, something else, here's my suggestion. Okay. Well, that's good. Yeah. So that's a hard thing to say, and some people won't say it, they'll just put it up.
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_04So no. Um, and I would say a lot of the like the newer ones will just say yes to everything. Um, and so which is fine if you're trying to build, I mean, that's their brand. I yeah, they can do what they want.
SPEAKER_03Oh, the whole Bachelor Taylor Frankie Paul yeah. All of me is thinking about some of the stuff they put on their TikToks when they were really starting out early that was not probably authentic to their lifestyle choices.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Well, it makes you like think are like Mormons really Mormons. Like he goes, they just hear it in Utah. Sort of thing, but Yeah. Sorry if that offended anyway. I take you up my hat.
SPEAKER_03The show is popular.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, super popular. Yeah. Yeah. So let's say your daughter was like, Mom, I want to be I know she's gonna be an engineer. She's gonna be very successful engineer. Oh, what kind of engineer is she?
SPEAKER_04She um well, she's in she's a freshman at Clemson, but she wants to be a mechanical. Okay. Yeah, and she wants to build rockets. Uh she's a crazy smart girl who just signed her internship today, so she's excited. Um, yay, Sophie! Uh no, it's this is where it gets all fed because she's gonna be in Statesville, so North Carolina, and she's working for a company called Airbox, but also they also partner with Train and the NASCAR. Very, very cool. She's cool, super excited, but it's a big deal. She'll be at the launch that just happened to the Yeah. So in any case, so she's excited.
SPEAKER_02But let's say she wanted to go down the route and be like, okay, mom, I want to be an influencer. What would you, or let's say your niece said that. What would you say is like the best practice to building out your brand in such an oversaturated market?
SPEAKER_04So my first so somebody just asked me this because they wanted to start doing it. Um they're a little older than what my daughter is, but um they said, Well, I want to start doing this. Where do I start? And I I said, I looked at her and I said, Well, what do you like? What is what are you good at? What what do you think other people want to see? Yeah. And so, like, write them out, like show me. And so she's like, Well, I'm I'm really she's an art teacher, so she's artist. She's um super creative, but she um, you know, so those she likes to um have dinner parties, like she decorates her house, like those kind of things. And I'm like, okay, so just start thinking about like what your pillars would be, and that's where you start, you know, focusing on to build. And so, you know, for her, okay, let's start. I just went over there and I was like, let me just make your first couple videos for you. Like, then you can, you know, then then I then I don't then then it's you. But like, let me help you with the first one. And the first one was just this is who I am. Yeah, this is what I want to accomplish. And if you'd like to follow along, please join me.
SPEAKER_03There you go. I love that. Yeah. Have you ever thought about teaching a class or do a digital course or anything like that? I mean, have I?
SPEAKER_05Sure.
SPEAKER_04Um I mean, yeah, I would love to do something like that. I just uh the the actual getting it done in live and in production would be the that time. You bet me excellent. Like, while people click to help me, we can talk after digital course would be great.
SPEAKER_03Yes.
Trends Tools And Platform Algorithms
SPEAKER_04But anyway, her second reel that I made. Let's turn it in so we can all follow her. Yeah, her name's Colleen Butterworth. And so she um she did a funny thing and she's like, What do you think? And I was like, give it to me. And she did the, you know, oh, some people spend money on birkin bags, I spend money on um volleyball tournaments. And she has a volleyball tournament sweatshirt, right? So it's super relatable. And she's like, and so I put the wording over, I picked the song, I said, okay, just post it. She's like, Are you sure it's not sound stupid? And it got like a million views. So that's amazing. Good job, Colleen. Awesome. It doesn't really grow your account as much as you think it would. So she's even like, Oh, I got a million views, but I got 200 followers.
SPEAKER_02I'm like, yep. But it gives you that confidence, like, okay, I'm doing something right. Like if you're getting a million views on one video, you're right, you're not getting as many followers, which is like you're building the brand. Yeah. It takes a lot for someone to follow nowadays. It's like not as easy as it used to be. And even your friends, like, they'll look at your stuff and not even like it or follow you. So yeah, there's a lot of that.
SPEAKER_04It's so funny. Because then I'll get people say to me, Oh, I saw that you were in um my mother-in-law, does it ever I do love my mother-in-law, but she'll be like, I saw, oh, is that you had a great dress on. I'm like, Really? You saw it? I wouldn't leave it. I know. So yeah, so it's one of those kind of things. And I had another person that was like, I see you're all over the world. I'm like, okay. Didn't I haven't seen you? So you must not have liked it, or you just what what was the future life? I just want to be on airplanes. I do love airplanes.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that sounds fun.
SPEAKER_04My husband my um dad was uh SDS for the Air Force. My dad was in airplanes forever, and so I love your comfort spot. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02What would be like a good travel hack or a travel tip?
SPEAKER_04Um, oh well. First of all, I stand by the fact that you should always have a carry-on, and I do not like roller bags, so that's my whole thing with that. Um so I think you should definitely pack in a backpack. Um, but uh my biggest one for finding flights and that kind of stuff is Google Flights, but then you can also set you can also set um alerts. So I have an alert from Charleston to Paris that lets me know anytime a price drops, anytime whatever. So the reason we're going to Paris is because it alerted me and I got the tickets for like I think it was 500 even per ticket. Yeah, it's and then for Scotland it was$525 per ticket. So I mean, and I, you know, I have them out at different airports, and I also um do Going, which is um a free, you couldn't pay to get more, but a free little alert app that tells you what's an email, but it's like this is on sale, and you just set your home airport. So my home airports are Charleston, Charlotte, Atlanta, although I don't know if I can drive to Atlanta anymore. Um, and then I have I said Savannah. Did I say Savannah? Uh no. Savannah. Um, but we have a place there, so it's easy. Um, so those are kind of my my main like where I'm willing to fly out of. And so that they'll ping you anytime there's a flight deal out of there. So I once got a flight to Santiago, Chile for$330. Wow.
SPEAKER_03Wow, that's crazy. Yeah, it's a deal. Yeah. Yes. I was gonna go to Italy with my husband in the end of September, but now I'm second guessing it because of the weather. Oh, perfect time. It is oh my gosh, yeah, absolutely. Because I don't want to be with all the tourists, but I also don't want to be bundled up because I am cold often.
SPEAKER_04We went to Italy in November. I don't know where you're going in Italy, but um, we went to Italy in November. I didn't even have a coat on.
SPEAKER_03I think we're doing like the Tuscany Cinquitaire. Sounds gorgeous. Yeah, yeah. Oh, it was that I like so we're like Italy, right?
SPEAKER_04That's my vote. Yeah. All right, good. That's magic. I can go to staying on a beach for so long, though. Yeah, I know. Yeah, yes. That's why my daughter picked Barbados, because we never do beach ones. Yeah. So I was like three days of a beach. Yeah. Three days. We did three days of a beach, and I was like, okay, we gotta do something, we gotta get out of here.
SPEAKER_02Give me an excursion. Yes, there you go. That's so fun. Yes. So, Barb, I'm curious. Five years from now, do you see yourself doing more influencer marketing? Do you see yourself taking a bigger role with consulting? What does that look like if you could?
SPEAKER_04Well, my husband will be retired in one year, so that's exciting. Yeah. Um, so see us traveling more at that point. Um, I will probably still be doing all of it. Yeah. That's what I see in five years. Um I love it. I love everything that I do, so I don't know why I would stop um at this point, unless something like your own schedule can't be right.
SPEAKER_03Yes. Yes.
SPEAKER_04I mean, I'm always working. I feel like I'm never not working, but um, I also can go places, and that's a big thing for me. Yeah, it's huge. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So I love it. Yes. So now how can everybody find you on social media and your website and all that fun stuff?
SPEAKER_04So Blushing Alpacas is my social media. Um, and my husband has a social media, skidmore diaries. He just never posts on it, he just accepts my collaborations, which I think is funny. Um, so I'm like, you understand, this just looks like my account, right? And he was like, Oh yeah, I should probably start. Um he's skidmore diaries. Um, and then um I also have Chuck Town Foodie, which is another food called Harnet. Yeah. Oh, cool. Yeah. So that learned something. I was excited. Um, and then you can email me at blushing alpacas or um my website's outside center consulting. Um, and then my email is barb at outsidecenterconsulting.com. So um yeah. So it's fun.
SPEAKER_03Yay. Well, this has been so much fun. Yeah. And eventually I get your script award.
SPEAKER_02Uh yes.
SPEAKER_04Yes, yes. I I we're meeting.
SPEAKER_02Okay, well then I wish weekend I could drop it. I can drop it off like because I won't be around. Okay. Okay. On Easter. You're gonna come for Easter. Oh yeah. Yeah. That's okay. Maybe when you get back to it. Right. I have it. It's on my like mantle. It's just waiting there. Oh, it's on your mantle. Yeah, that's that's cool. Because I put it there so I wouldn't forget it today and then I forgot it anyway.
Creator Advice And Travel Deal Hacks
SPEAKER_04There is one thing that I don't think we address that I do think that businesses need to know. Yeah, right. Please. So a lot of influencers are in comment pods. And I don't know if you've ever noticed this, but the same influencers will comment on the same people to drive up the engagement on the page. And so I think businesses need to know that sometimes these influencers are just having other influencers comment, not actual people, and or even they have like bots or those kind of things and they get on Telegram and all that kind of stuff. So I see it a lot. I know who does it because I see it. But I always think that business should businesses should know if this person isn't a comment pod, do you still like the content that they're creating? That's the first question.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yes, okay, we can bring them in. No? Okay, then we're not bringing them in because you're getting the content, not necessarily the people coming to your page. So you just have to be aware of those kind of things. I don't think a lot of people are, as your faces are telling me that they don't.
SPEAKER_03No, this is the first time I've heard the word comment pod. Oh, yeah. That's cool. A lot of them do it through Telegram. Interesting. Okay. And so are you. Now I'm gonna go make note of the people that I like and stuff. Yeah. Yeah, you'll look at their comments and they'll be the same influencers commenting. I always thought they were just friends with one another. I mean, they sometimes hang out outside of their. And some of them are just friends with them. I'm not gonna like my friend Maria always comments on my stuff, but yeah. I have a really good friend who's an influencer and like the same people. Interesting. I'm gonna I'm gonna text her. I'll find out.
SPEAKER_02But is that different than like when people when you post something and you're to tag Charleston or say your location at Charleston and you have like this person that says community Charleston or Charlie Pass? Yeah, those are bots, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Like oh, those I hate them.
SPEAKER_02Pies, pie, high, hide. Oh, yeah. Okay, so that's that's completely different.
SPEAKER_04Okay, yeah, those are bots that you can just either block or get whatever. They're just trying to get people to come over.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's the worst. I know. And they're like, pay me five thousand dollars and I'll put you on my store. Like, no, thank you.
SPEAKER_04I always think it's funny when bigger accounts like contact and or like they're not from here, and then they contact, you know, a restaurant and they're like, I have this many followers or this many, whatever, but if they're not even in food and they want you to be hosted, what what am I what are you gonna give give to me besides the content, right? If you like the content, then then let's talk about what we would allow them to do. But if you don't like their content, then the answer is no.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Interesting. And every every brand or business or restaurant you work with, I'm guessing best practice is to always have a contract in place.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, you know, some of them are so like when you have like parties or openings, it's more of just an invitation. Okay, you know, so if somebody is coming over, but if you're paying them, absolutely 100%. If you're just doing a trades type of situation, depends on what the trade is, you know. So um, then yes for that, but no for some certain things. So like like an opening or maybe like a lunch somewhere, usually there's not a contract because it's just such a low price point and so low ask. Um so and you you may get burned. There are I've I've people have gotten burned before, usually on alcohol. So you can always limit interesting. So that is interesting. Yeah, people buy like, oh, I want that bottle. Everything's comp, so I'll take this bottle and it's like a$200 bottle fly. And you're like, okay, well, that was not the intention here. Now so yeah, so there's that. Interesting.
SPEAKER_03Anyway, okay. Sorry, that was my there should be. I know we've done it in the past with camera, but we should definitely do another influencer panel if you would like to do it. Yeah, that'd be fun. Absolutely. Because everyone has a different viewpoint on it, and I feel like every time I talk to someone who's in this space, I get different knowledge that I'd never heard before. Like the Comet Pod. So it's very cool.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the Comic Pods. Yeah. Is there follow pods too?
SPEAKER_04Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02Wow.
SPEAKER_04Like the follow for follow, or yeah, there's definitely like you can get in and get not real file. People just like hanging out, having coffee, and being like, You wanna be in my pod? Let's let's hang out, we'll support one of the things.
unknownYeah.
Comment Pods Contracts And Red Flags
SPEAKER_04Um, and there's like I I could probably name you all the people that are in it because they do the exact same thing. That's the people that I'm thinking of right now. Yeah. Okay, interesting. And some of them have good content. So like 100% new. It's it's just what you're looking for for your restaurant.
SPEAKER_03Or I think that's mind-boggling to me because I love all their content. I'm wondering if like the comet pod situation like cheapens it a little because they don't need it.
SPEAKER_02Right. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03They're they're good on their own.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Is there a way to get out of the comet pod? Like just say, I don't want to be a part of it anymore. Okay.
SPEAKER_03Interesting. All right. Yeah. Good to note to people.
SPEAKER_04Never been invited, but if you know it's just one of those things that you know, they're just trying to increase their engagement, and then they'll say to I had somebody reach out, and a lot of people don't know what accounts I run, but reach out and they're like, My engagement's really high. And I'm like, Yeah, I know. I see who I see who's commenting. You're in the cult, the combat cult. So the question goes to my owners. Do you like her content? Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yes or no? She's dropping knowledge today, people. So I've learned something. Hey, excited to that's so funny. I'm one of the older ones. No, I love it. There are some definitely some influencers older than you. Yes. Who that I follow that I love.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. So it's a well, even last night when I was at the the the the event, yeah. Some of the younger girls are coming in. This is another thing that I think people that are starting out should know. And they were coming in and they were wearing things that I didn't think were uh not that they were appropriate. They just weren't nice, you know. Like we're going to a nice event that's open, you know, and I have a dress for it. Dress the part everybody has a, you know, or you don't have to wear a dress, but something nice. And they came in and cut off jean shorts. And I was like, but you're invited here for a reason, so try to play the part. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Still be a professional or setting your end. Yes, correct.
Where To Follow Barb And Wrap
SPEAKER_02Young or old. Because you also don't know what other opportunities could come out from that event, and someone might and that picture's everywhere. Yeah. In that outfit. Oh no. Yeah. Heart glass. They're shorts. Are we talking like really young though? Are we talking like they were older than 21? Okay. So yeah, they should have some seance. Okay.
SPEAKER_03He leaving the house looking like that.
SPEAKER_04Well, it's just even like just, I don't know, like the ripped jeans. Yeah. Just like, well, I guess I wear ripped jeans.
SPEAKER_03I'm on my boat or I'm in a lake nails. I don't even mommy up in the uh uh no. My my child would look at me like I was lost, my yeah. So well, this has been awesome. You're great. Thank you.
SPEAKER_04Thanks for having me. Of course. Did you have fun? Yes, it's fun. Of course. Then I get to see Rachel.
unknownYay!
SPEAKER_04Sabes.
SPEAKER_03She's Sabeth. Are you at a closest outreach?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Well, thank you guys for watching. Um, like you said, Barb, you can follow her at blushing alpacas or outside center consulting or Charleston Chucktown Foodie. Um, she lives in Charleston. If you're looking for someone to run your social media, she is the girl to go to. Uh reach out to her there. And it was wonderful having you. Yeah, this was so much fun. So much fun. Great. Thank you. All right, I'll be following your travels. Thank you. Yeah, we'll be looking forward to that. Wine bread. There you go.
SPEAKER_01All right, bye guys.
SPEAKER_02Bye, Charleston.
