What if the antidote to burnout lives in the space between a greeting, a shared meal, and making eye contact when you walk into a room?  After six months in Xalapa, Veracruz, I came back with a clearer picture of how daily rituals of rest, presence, and kindness work like medicine. I share what Mexico taught me about societal nourishment: why the mañana mindset protects what matters, how simple courtesies build a strong collective nervous system, and why connection changes how your body digests, heals, and holds energy.

To ground these ideas, I walk through three free live webinars designed to meet you where you are. We start with Detox Culture Versus Real Cleansing, a clear plan for supporting natural detox pathways without depletion, with simple recipes and routines you can sustain. Next, Not Sick But Not Fine Either breaks down early metabolic shifts in labs like glucose and triglycerides, offering actionable steps to stabilize your numbers before symptoms escalate. Finally, Nourishing Recovery focuses on what to eat after chemo or surgery to rebuild strength, calm inflammation, and restore digestion with care.

If you’re ready for a year guided by belonging and biology, this conversation offers both perspective and tools. Listen, share it with a friend who needs a gentler path, and join the webinars. Subscribe, leave a review, and tell me: what small kindness will you practice today?

New Year And Show Update

SPEAKER_00

Happy New Year, friends. There is a lot happening in the world right now, and I hope that 2026 is meeting you gently. Welcome to the Land Food Life Podcast. I'm your host, Kara Kroger, certified nutritionist, herbalist, and agroecology educator. In some upcoming episodes, I'll be switching things up and sharing audio versions of my newsletters. So if you enjoy what you hear and you want the written version delivered straight to your inbox, you can sign up at landfoodlife.com or KrogerNutrition.com. So let's go ahead and get into it. The title of this podcast is What Mexico Taught Me About Societal Nourishment and the Importance of Rest, Connection, and Presence we Are Losing in the U.S. So I've just returned to Texas after six months living in Jalapa, Veracruz, in Mexico. And living in another country certainly has a way of rearranging your perspective. And there are a few things that I witnessed in the beautiful Mexican culture that feel deeply relevant to our health, especially right now. So let me go ahead and tell you what those are. First, it's okay to slow down and approach life in a relaxed way. You don't have to be doing things all the time. Rest isn't laziness. It's how energy, clarity, and presence are rebuilt. And in my opinion, it's perfectly respectable to have moments of slowing down, often actually, even when you have a lot to do, actually. And I'm not talking about zoning out in front of screens, but actually being present with yourself and the people around you. Worry drains us, but presence restores us. One thing that I really sunk into in Mexico is that the mañana mindset is not about procrastination. It's actually about protecting time for what matters. Conversations are not rushed. Family and community come first. And that sense of connection, actually being seen and known and included, is one of the most powerful contributors to health I've ever observed. And this is reflected in the positive outlook on life many Mexicans possess. So the second thing I want to share is that small acts of kindness and giving and care are woven into daily life in Mexico, actually every moment. And it's pretty remarkable. So eye contact, saying hello to everyone when you walk into a room or you're walking down the street, wishing people buen provecho when you leave a restaurant. These moments may seem really small, but they remind people that they belong and that they're not invisible. And I was repeatedly humbled by a culture of extreme generosity. People gifting without attachment, and earrings, hats, and shirts were literally taken off and handed over to me if I commented that I liked them. And, you know, as an American, it was hard to accept these things without feeling bad. So that was another very interesting piece to consider. But these small treasures are given simply to create joy. And letting go of our possessions actually creates space for both the giver and the receiver. And it can be that simple. So these practices are so embedded in Mexican culture that not doing them is considered rude. And while they really do require a pretty significant amount of presence, the return is profound. And that is less loneliness, more meaning, and a stronger collective nervous system. And I will tell you one thing: Mexico has a very strong collective nervous system. When people think collectively, quality of life rises and community replaces what material possessions cannot provide. So as we move into this new year, I want to gently remind us that societal nourishment is not absent in the US, but it is often undervalued and fragmented and crowded out by speed and productivity and individualism. And the practices of rest and presence, shared meals, small kindnesses, giving, and genuine connections still exist all around us, yet they require conscious tending to survive and grow. So I believe that now more than ever, our health depends on reclaiming these rhythms. And this is not about nostalgia or idealism, but as a really practical, essential form of nourishment. When we slow down enough to see one another, when we choose connection over urgency and presence over performance, we don't just support our own nervous systems. We strengthen the collective fabric that makes our resilience possible. So as you're moving through 2026, I invite you to ask not only what you're feeding your body, but how are you feeding your relationships and your community and your sense of belonging? This too is medicine. So on that note, I'm offering three free live nutrition-focused webinars over the next few months. And I'd truly love for you to join me for one or all of them. These classes are designed to help you better understand what your body is communicating and personalize your nutrition in a realistic and sustainable way as you move into 2026, feeling more clear and steady and more supported. And the first one is detox culture versus real cleansing, what your body actually needs to reset. And that's going to be happening Tuesday, January 27th at 6 p.m. Central Time. So if you're feeling weighed down, foggy, inflamed, or simply just off and you're unsure what your body actually needs right now, this class is going to offer a very clear, supportive container to pause and recalibrate and reset with intention. So we'll explore how digestion, metabolism, and even mindset are influenced by waste buildup and microbial stressors and everyday toxic exposures, and how you can support your body's natural cleansing systems in a way that is actually nourishing. Detoxing can oftentimes be depleting, and cleansing should be a really nourishing thing. So you're going to walk away with a lot of practical strategies, a grounded framework for whole body cleansing, and really simple, delicious recipes that help you clear your body from what it no longer needs and move forward. The second webinar, Not Sick but not fine either, understanding early metabolic changes in lab markers is going to take place on Tuesday, February 24th at 6 p.m. Central. And if your blood sugar, cholesterol, or other metabolic markers are starting to creep up, but you still feel mostly fine, this class is for you. I work with many people in my practice who are in this early in-between stage and where these subtle shifts are happening in the body before symptoms fully emerge. And we're going to break down those early lab changes and talk about what they're actually reflecting physiologically in the body, and then why they often appear before noticeable symptoms do, and how everyday food and lifestyle patterns influence them and how you can improve them. And you're going to leave with a lot of clarity and reassurance and practical personalized steps you can take to support your metabolism and potentially prevent those numbers, those lab numbers from progressing into a diagnosis. And then last, the final webinar is nourishing recovery, what your body needs after chemo or surgery. And that's going to be held on Tuesday, March 24th at 6 p.m. And after chemo or major surgery, the body has endured a profound amount of stress, and it really needs more than just time to heal. It needs targeted nourishment and thoughtful support. And unfortunately, many, many people receive very little guidance on how to eat or care for their bodies during recovery from chemotherapy or surgery. And so in this class, we're going to focus on how to rebuild strength, restore your digestion, reduce inflammation, and support healing at a cellular level using food as a powerful ally. So whether you're recovering from cancer treatment or healing after surgery, you're going to walk away with practical strategies to restore energy and rebuild confidence around eating and support your body's recovery in a safe and sustainable way. So you can register for any of these webinars using the link in the show notes or by visiting landfoodlife.com or KrogerNutrition.com. And if you can't attend the live class, please go ahead and register anyway because a recording will be sent out afterwards. And you know, January is an especially supportive time for cleansing and resetting as life tends to be a little bit quieter and offers more space to focus inward. So if you are ready to roll and you're feeling foggy, inflamed, and off track, and you're curious about deeper, more personalized cleansing support, you're welcome to book a complimentary discovery call with me and we can talk through what uh what kind of reset might best support your body and how we might work together moving forward. Or you can wait till the webinar at the end of the month and learn what I have to share at that date. So here is to a deeply nurtured body and mind in the year ahead. Thank you so much for listening. And with much love, I am signing off. Thank you.
