The Monday Morning Dread: When the Weekend Ministry Success Doesn't Feel Great on Monday Morning
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In this episode of the Healthy Church Staff Podcast, co-host Todd Rhoades addresses the 'success trap' ministers often face: the disconnection between ministry success and personal job fulfillment. He discusses the emotional discrepancy from the high of a successful Sunday to the low of a Monday filled with routine work tasks, highlighting that job satisfaction is separate from ministry impact. Todd encourages listeners to identify job aspects that energize or drain them and to consider whether the dissatisfaction stems from role misfit, cultural environment, or a poor fit overall. He emphasizes that feeling drained on Monday is not a spiritual failure but an important data point that may signify the need for change or coaching. • Discrepancy between ministry success and personal job satisfaction. • Monday feelings of emptiness despite a successful Sunday. • Importance of separating job satisfaction from ministry success. • Impact of work environment and team dynamics on job satisfaction. • Encouragement to list job aspects that energize and drain. • Monday feelings as valuable data points, not spiritual deficiencies. • Potential need for coaching or changes in role or environment.

The Monday After A Big Sunday
SPEAKER_00You had a good weekend, great weekend actually, good worship, solid response to your sermon, no major disasters, people seemed engaged, and yet here you are on a money morning sitting at your desk in your office feeling just empty. Maybe even dreading the week ahead. Everything looks so successful on the outside, but on inside you feel like you're going through the motions. If this sounds familiar, I'm glad you're here today. We're going to talk about it here on the Healthy Church Staff Podcast. Hi there, my name's Todd Rhodes, one of the co-founders, along with Matt Steen over at chemistrystaffing.com.
Naming The Success Trap
SPEAKER_00Let's talk about what I call the success trap. We've been trained to measure our own personal job description in ministry by how well it goes on the weekend. But here's the thing ministry impact and job fulfillment are not necessarily the same thing. You can be effective and still be miserable. You can see God at work and still feel really disconnected from your calling. The weekend metrics don't tell don't tell you if you actually love your job. So what's really going on here? What's the disconnect between feeling so high on Sunday after church and feeling so low on Monday when you get to the office? Let's do a little bit of a reality check, okay?
When Adrenaline Wears Off
SPEAKER_00On Monday, Mondays are great, aren't they? Don't you love Mondays? Mondays tend to strip away any adrenaline. The lights are off, the crowd is gone, and you're left with your actual work. The emails, the politics, the meetings about the meetings, personality conflicts that you're managing, staff problems, growth problems, all kinds of things, and that vision that just feels stuck in neutral. And on Monday morning is when you realize that you might love ministry, but you don't love this job. It's funny, a side note here, at chemistry staffing, the biggest day that we see new resumes and new applications come in is drummer, you guessed it, Monday. Monday, when that adrenaline rush is gone and you sit at your desk and you realize that you might love ministry, but you're not really crazy about your job. So listen, there's nothing wrong with you for feeling this way. But this is where Monday morning is really where the real work begins. You
Impact Versus Job Fit
SPEAKER_00need to start separating ministry success from your job satisfaction. Because in reality, those are different metrics entirely. One is about impact, the other is about fit. So one of the things I think you can ask yourself is this what parts of my actual job give me energy? And what parts of my job, even on Monday morning, just drain me completely? Now don't spiritualize this away. God cares about your job satisfaction. He really does. But there's something that we miss. And sometimes the dread isn't about your calling. Your calling could be really hot and really vibrant. It could be about your environment.
Culture And Role Misalignment
SPEAKER_00Toxic team dynamics will kill job satisfaction faster than anything. And you can love what you do and hate where you do it. That's the reality. Maybe the problem isn't your heart for ministry, maybe it's the culture right now that you find yourself in that you're actually working in. Or maybe the role has just been squeezed into something that just doesn't fit you. So here's your bottom line. Mondays are tough, right? Ministry success on Sunday doesn't automatically create job fulfillment on Monday. And that disconnect is maybe telling you something important about your fit, not your calling. So this week, here's what I'd like you to challenge you to do, okay?
The Two Lists Reality Check
SPEAKER_00I would challenge you to make two lists. Okay? List one, what gave you energy in your actual work this past week? That's list one, what gave you energy? List number two, what completely drained you? What completely drained you? Don't include Sunday stuff. Leave that off your list. Just include Monday through Friday or whatever your work week is, that day-to-day work reality. Look at those lists and ask, hey, is this a role problem? Is my role, my job description maybe not something that really resonates with me right now, or maybe I've outgrown it or it's outgrown me? Is it a j a role problem? Is it a culture problem? Is this church just not a good place for me? Is this town not a good place for me? Or is it a fit problem? You just overall it just doesn't feel like a good fit. Your Monday morning feelings do matter. Okay? They're not a spiritual deficiency. They're data points. Okay, so pay attention to what they're telling you. I hope this is helpful to you. Maybe you need some help, maybe some coaching to work through some of the things that you feel on Monday morning and how those are so different than what you're feeling on Sunday afternoon.
