>> Bridget:

Good morning.

>> Wendy:

Good morning.

>> Bridget:

I'm Bridget.

>> Wendy:

And I'm Wendy and this is Flick and Beans. Thank you for bringing me coffee.

>> Bridget:

You're welcome. And there is a funny story because I sent you that text yesterday with that. What were they called? Cool. Coconut. Yeah, two different drinks. And I showed the girl at seven Brew and she goes, we don't have that here. That's Starbucks. And I was like, oh, okay. Well, I got you a coconut Breville. A And I have a coconut energy drink.

>> Wendy:

Oh, okay.

>> Bridget:

And that's just because at that moment I absolutely froze.

>> Wendy:

Yeah. You're like, what do I do?

>> Bridget:

I know. So I'll have to be more on top of what the h***?

>> Wendy:

I'm.

>> Bridget:

No, I'll have to learn how to read.

>> Wendy:

Well, it's delicious. It seems extra creamy today.

>> Bridget:

Great. Yeah, they're like, you sure like your coconut. I was like, yeah, shut up. Yeah, like these are both for me and I just really like coconut.

>> Wendy:

I need to be really caffeinated too.

>> Bridget:

That's right. Go away. No, they're super sweet.

>> Wendy:

There they are. And I think coached to be conversational.

>> Bridget:

Oh, for real?

>> Wendy:

Because they're always asking you like, what you doing?

>> Bridget:

Emmett's almost the same sentence. Got any big plans for the rest of the day?

>> Wendy:

Yeah. You're like, no, no big plans.

>> Bridget:

Yeah. Nope. I always say I'm going to record my podcast flicking beans. The smart ones say, oh, what's your podcast? Another eventful morning. Yeah, I s*** my pants a little.

>> Wendy:

Oh, I wasn't expecting that.

>> Bridget:

No, neither was I. Never just to fart over 40. End of story. But everything's cool now.

>> Wendy:

Okay, that's good.

>> Bridget:

I know. And I hope it stays that way because I am wearing white shorts.

>> Wendy:

Ooh, yeah, that could be bad shirts. Hopefully the 7 brew doesn't do you wrong.

>> Bridget:

Right there with you, sister. It's your chair I'm sitting on.

>> Wendy:

It's got a towel on it currently.

>> Bridget:

Goodness.

>> Wendy:

I knew it was coming. In the similar semi related thing, I got asked to do some UGC content for a hemorrhoid cream this morning. So I have to decide whether I want my face associated with that.

>> Bridget:

Oh my God. Well, you put it under your eyes, don't you?

>> Wendy:

You could. Yeah, sure. Yeah. Could be a beauty secret.

>> Bridget:

The many uses of prep H. That's a lot of b*** stuff early in the morning.

>> Wendy:

Yeah, I'm awake now though.

>> Bridget:

Yeah. Oh, so was I. S***. Literally. You remember my friend called me from her car and she had s*** her pants. All she said for like the first 30 seconds. Of the phone call was, oh my God. F***, f***, f***. And I'm like, hello? Hello?

>> Wendy:

Has someone died once?

>> Bridget:

Oh my God. She's driving around in her poop pants. Things are tough all over, people.

>> Wendy:

Yeah. City out there.

>> Bridget:

That s***'s rough. Yeah. On that note, yeah.

>> Wendy:

Our movie this Week, Office Space 1999, not currently streaming anywhere for free, but you can purchase it on Amazon and YouTube.

>> Bridget:

And we didn't watch it.

>> Wendy:

We didn't watch it because we didn't want to buy it. I thought I owned it. I have owned it at some point in the past, but I could not find it, so I must have purged it. But yeah, so we realized this kind of late in the day yesterday and we're like, should we just do it anyway? I think I've seen it enough times to talk about it. And we decided, yeah. So this is a first. Flicking beans where we didn't watch the movie. Technically. We've seen it though.

>> Bridget:

Yes. So many times. This is another movie that has so many quotable quotes.

>> Wendy:

So many. And when I was looking through like some fun facts, I was reminded of a few that I'd forgotten about too. So that was fun. But it's a Mike Judge film who is the creator of Beavis and Butthead and King of the Hill. And it started out as an animated thing with Milton, who is, if you've seen it, the stapler guy. And that was a short he used to do on MTV and snl. And they decided that they would wanted to make a live action film with Mike Judge and this is where it came from. So. Which I love Mike Judge. King of the Hill especially is one of the best shows ever made, in my opinion.

>> Bridget:

It's great.

>> Wendy:

It's so good. It's got. It's so funny, it's cute. And I love the arc of like Hank Hill's character of just being like this down home guy. Very like set in his ways, but he's challenged all the time and becomes more and more open minded throughout the show. And I just think, no, no, it's

>> Bridget:

well done, show O. Oh yeah, well. And he has cameo in.

>> Wendy:

Yes, he's the manager in the restaurant.

>> Bridget:

I do have a fun fact about that stapler because it was created for the film. Swingline didn't make red staplers anymore. I think that's pretty cool.

>> Wendy:

They never made them.

>> Bridget:

Oh.

>> Wendy:

According to something that I read, it was made for the film because they wanted the item to pop more and they started making them after people one started asking where they could get them. And two people started making money selling red swing lines on ebay. So they're like, oh, we're losing money. And they started making them.

>> Bridget:

Poor Milton. Like, if you've ever worked in any kind of office, you feel the pain.

>> Wendy:

Yes.

>> Bridget:

Everybody's got that. The irritating receptionist. Just a moment. Just a moment. And it's just like, poor Milton, you know, he keeps getting his office moved.

>> Wendy:

Yeah.

>> Bridget:

He's really treated like a nobody.

>> Wendy:

Yeah. The office politics. People don't care for him because he's a little weird.

>> Bridget:

The ratio of cake to people. I was told there would be cake, but you're cutting the pieces too big. F******.

>> Wendy:

God. They did nail all of the tiny little intricacies and annoyances of the office really, really well in this. And even though it wasn't a very big box office success, which kind of makes sense because it's very low key at first glance. You're like, is this isn't exciting? But then as you start to get into it, that works for it. Because being in an office is boring. And so all these boring charact and everything, they work perfectly.

>> Bridget:

Yeah.

>> Wendy:

And somehow it's hilarious still.

>> Bridget:

Did you read also that that PC load letter scene was ad lib? No, it wasn't. In the script. He was. The paper jammed during the scene and he was like, PC load letter. What the.

>> Wendy:

I did not know that.

>> Bridget:

Great.

>> Wendy:

Of course it did. Of all the technology advancements that we've had, why printers still do this? Why are printers such a pain in the a** still? They haven't improved.

>> Bridget:

When you gotta, like. You gotta look at diagram and open all the little doors in the slots and the whatever, and then yank out the paper and rip it halfway. I don't hate printers.

>> Wendy:

Yeah.

>> Bridget:

It's like a Transformer. It is more than meets the eye.

>> Wendy:

Is that.

>> Bridget:

Is that.

>> Wendy:

Is that their. I don't know anything about Transformers. Is that their catchphrase?

>> Bridget:

That's their theme song. More than meets the eye. Transformers, Robots in disguise. Really?

>> Wendy:

No.

>> Bridget:

Okay.

>> Wendy:

I never watched it.

>> Bridget:

Well, I didn't either. But every little jingle is an earworm for me. So I got places to go and I'm feeling free Controlling my Crohn's means everything to me Another pants.

>> Wendy:

Oh, does anybody s*** their pants in this movie?

>> Bridget:

And friends. People. Okay, so the gist of the movie is Ron Livingston, Iowa boy.

>> Wendy:

Yeah, Marion, Iowa is.

>> Bridget:

I mean, he's just like all of us. He's dead inside. He is dead inside. He goes with his girlfriend to Hypnotherapist.

>> Wendy:

Yeah.

>> Bridget:

Who kind of Puts him in this state of bliss where he doesn't care about. It's. It's just like. Yeah, just like give zero f****. That's how to live your life. Really.

>> Wendy:

It really is. If you could get there. That's not. Giving a f*** is a superpower for sure.

>> Bridget:

And he is. What is he? What do you call that? Filleting a fish. He has a fresh fish and he's cutting it up on his desk after not giving a f***.

>> Wendy:

Okay, yeah, yeah. Filleting a fish. Yeah. Cleaning a fish.

>> Bridget:

Sometimes they call it on his TPS report cover letters. But that's just a huge nod to how little he cares about his job anymore. And he gets promoted.

>> Wendy:

Yeah.

>> Bridget:

That is so.

>> Wendy:

Oh.

>> Bridget:

Aggravating.

>> Wendy:

Yeah. And relatable.

>> Bridget:

Yes.

>> Wendy:

We've all been there where we feel like somebody just got picked because they were liked better.

>> Bridget:

Yeah.

>> Wendy:

Essentially. And being cool and not caring makes you more likable, I guess. Nobody likes an overachiever. Somebody that cares too much is annoying.

>> Bridget:

Just a moment.

>> Wendy:

Got a case of the Monday.

>> Bridget:

Oh, God. Right?

>> Wendy:

Yeah.

>> Bridget:

You hear that enough times, you're going to want to just punch someone in the face.

>> Wendy:

Or have you ever had a job like that where you were on the phone all the time and you had to keep saying the same thing over and over?

>> Bridget:

Oh, yeah.

>> Wendy:

I used to work at a hospital switchboard. And I remember the next job I have after that. It took me a while to stop answering the phone like I did at the hospital. Oh, God, I was so used to it. And I answered it that way a couple times. And I'm like, this is not where you're calling.

>> Bridget:

Oh, God. Out of a Tempo.

>> Wendy:

Sorry. So he has three bosses. Is that two bosses?

>> Bridget:

He has five people. Tell him about his TPS report. TPS cover sheet, cover letter, whatever.

>> Wendy:

He forgot the COVID letter on his report.

>> Bridget:

Yeah. Does he have five bosses or does he have. Well, that doesn't matter because that's just the hierarchy.

>> Wendy:

Yeah.

>> Bridget:

Dumbass.

>> Wendy:

I hate it so much. Everything about working in an office. Not everything, but a lot of it.

>> Bridget:

Even working from home, the language is the same. Like, I'm gonna need you to work on Saturday. You don't have a way to say no? It's not phrased that way.

>> Wendy:

No. So, yeah, Lumberg. John C. Reilly was considered for that role, which I can't see now. That monotone, slow. Get to the f****** point. He does it perfectly. And I feel like John C. Reilly has too much energy for that role.

>> Bridget:

Oh, you're right. I could see That I read that they cut a scene with him where he lost his parking spot or something along those lines. And he freaks out, like, screaming, yell. And they decided to cut it because they wanted his character to stay just that way. Keep him monotone and boring and.

>> Wendy:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

>> Bridget:

Take forever to get to your point, like you said.

>> Wendy:

Yeah. I guess getting back to the plot point that we were kind of discussing. So he gets. He doesn't give a f*** because he gets hypnotized. He breaks up with that girlfriend because. Or she breaks up. Yeah. They're not good together. And it's very obvious. Everyone knows she's cheating on him.

>> Bridget:

Yeah.

>> Wendy:

And then he starts getting promoted. They think he's a go getter because he's like, I literally don't care.

>> Bridget:

It was so great, though, also that not caring gives him kind of this boost of, why the f*** shouldn't I ask Jennifer Aniston out?

>> Wendy:

Yeah, yeah.

>> Bridget:

I mean, he's just like, what the f***?

>> Wendy:

Yeah. What? She says no. Oh, well.

>> Bridget:

Yeah.

>> Wendy:

Yeah. And she likes that. Although it's a little weird when she's like, you want to go next door to the same restaurant, Right?

>> Bridget:

Well, I have a little fun fact about that. Mike Judge said it seems that every city now has these identical office parks with identical adjoining chain restaurants. And the specific ones in this movie, Tchotchkes, Chili's and Flingers, were inspired by the three restaurants that used to be on the corner of. In Irving, Texas, Bennigan's, Chili's, and Frijoles. And this intersection is in the dead center of the Las Colinas business complex. That's so true, though. All the same s***.

>> Wendy:

Yeah.

>> Bridget:

Over and over and over. I think it's funny because she works at, like, the TGI Fridays, the Tchotchkes, and they go to Flingers, and she's admiring their. Their uniforms and. And she's still in her uniform. And that's where the pieces of flare.

>> Wendy:

Yes.

>> Bridget:

Comes in. TGI Fridays stopped requiring its waitstaff to wear flair after this movie.

>> Wendy:

Unfair workplace environment.

>> Bridget:

It is. If you want 27 pieces of flair, then require 27 pieces of flare.

>> Wendy:

Yes. Oh, yeah. Yeah, they nailed that too. Like, it's not just a office space, but also working in a restaurant. They say one thing and they expect you to do another. And it's like, well, just say what you want. Why is there all this? Because they don't want to seem demanding. But they are.

>> Bridget:

Yeah.

>> Wendy:

Just be clear.

>> Bridget:

I don't like to talk about my flair.

>> Wendy:

Yeah. Don't either.

>> Bridget:

We're not in Kansas anymore.

>> Wendy:

Him and his co workers, who are also fed up with this situation. Which one of them is named Michael Bolton?

>> Bridget:

God, yes.

>> Wendy:

And that's a whole thing during the movie because he's like, there's nothing wrong with that name. And then he goes, there was nothing wrong with that name till I was 12. And that no talent a** clown started winning Grammys.

>> Bridget:

Right.

>> Wendy:

So Michael Bolton has responded to this. Yes. Did you have that?

>> Bridget:

I do. This is what I have. 2015, the real Michael Bolton appeared in a Funny or Die video, and he was digitally inserted into several scenes from the movie, replacing his namesake character. And he repeated the lines verbatim, with one exception. He called himself an extremely talented a** clown.

>> Wendy:

I have not seen that. I like that. But he's funny because this is what he said in an interview in 2003. He was asked about it because the movie had started gaining cult following by this point. And he said, I was doing fine. Then they made this movie and I can't go anywhere. So that's funny. Like used the line from the movie a** clown. He says later that he really enjoys the movie and he willingly signs office space DVDs for fans frequently.

>> Bridget:

I love that.

>> Wendy:

So he's embraced it.

>> Bridget:

Well, you have to.

>> Wendy:

Yeah. And I. I get it. I actually love Michael. But there is something very uncool about him, I think maybe just the fact, you know, he's another white guy singing black people songs.

>> Bridget:

But it's the hair.

>> Wendy:

Yeah, the hair. He doesn't give a f***, though.

>> Bridget:

Yeah.

>> Wendy:

So good for him.

>> Bridget:

Good for him. I liked this one, too. That said, after the film came out, you know, acknowledging it wasn't a huge box office success, but he got compliments from a bunch of celebrities who loved it. Jim Carrey invited Mike Judge to his house. Chris Rock left, quote, the best voicemail ever, and Madonna took him to dinner.

>> Wendy:

Whoa. That's crazy.

>> Bridget:

I don't know. That kind of made me chuckle, too. Yeah. So, I mean, it's brilliant.

>> Wendy:

There's so many things about the movie that are brilliant. Just a general way that it captures everything. And then some of the choices that they made, which were unusual, like all of the gangster music, which I guess they didn't want to use initially. The studio didn't, but focus group said, yeah, that was cool. And then that end scene with the printer where they use the song D***, It Feels Good to be a gangster. That has become a cultural phenomenon.

>> Bridget:

Absolutely.

>> Wendy:

And who hasn't wanted to beat up a printer?

>> Bridget:

I bet you 20% of my TikToks have that music. It's usually the cat, though.

>> Wendy:

There's these places called, like, smash rooms and stuff like that. Are you familiar? Yeah, we went on one in a company outing and got to smash up some printers.

>> Bridget:

Nice.

>> Wendy:

That was fun.

>> Bridget:

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I need to do one of those things. So the plot thickens and they're gonna pull a Superman 3.

>> Wendy:

Yeah.

>> Bridget:

And steal money from the company. Just tiny bits across many accounts. Penny here, penny there, and it's gonna make them rich. And they're gonna be a big f*** you to the company. And they get really lucky at the end of the movie because Milton, being so p***** off and disgruntled, going to burn the place down.

>> Wendy:

Yeah, he destroyed all the evidence.

>> Bridget:

So lucky.

>> Wendy:

So lucky. But, yeah, they are trying to round off fractions of a cent. And of course, as anybody that's ever worked in a spreadsheet knows, somebody f***** up a decimal and it starts stealing way more than that very obvious amount. Have you heard about the Amazon thing? So apparently Amazon had some kind of big glitch and started charging a few people $350 million for their Amazon prime subscription. And people are, like, posting their bank statements and stuff.

>> Bridget:

Holy.

>> Wendy:

I was like, that's more than a decimal. But, yeah, I was at a happy hour with some people on Friday and we were talking about that. I was like, oh, I made the quote of, like, somebody. It's a decimal from the movie. And they're like, this way more than that. $350 million. Can you believe that?

>> Bridget:

Jesus.

>> Wendy:

I don't even know how that happens.

>> Bridget:

God. Well, no, it happened to me the other day. Yeah, I. Yeah, I. I missed a decimal point and I was off by, like $10,000.

>> Wendy:

Yeah.

>> Bridget:

Because the amount was $104. And I was like, what is this? Anyway, it happens.

>> Wendy:

It happens.

>> Bridget:

Yeah, it happens. Okay. Oh, when they're trying to figure out the plot and they're at Peter's house and that's where the neighbor lives. Come over, they're breast exams on tv. The apartment complex is called Morning Wood.

>> Wendy:

I never noticed that.

>> Bridget:

Morning Wood apartments. Single men.

>> Wendy:

They are not nice apartments. And they can hear each other through the wall. If you haven't seen it. Who hasn't seen this movie, though?

>> Bridget:

I don't know, man. If you haven't definitely, you've at least seen the references. You know, in other things. They did the printer scene from Family Guy when Peter Griffin kept playing over and over the bird is the word. Oh, yeah, that's what they did that the printer Scene. But to the compact disc. Any who Sweet love story. Jennifer Aniston in her Big Gulp.

>> Wendy:

I don't know why it always shocks me, but they're in the car together, and she has this Big Gulp. And I think this might be close to the time Big Gulps were invented, but it's just huge in her hand. It's, like, bigger than her head. You're like, how much Diet Coke do you need?

>> Bridget:

We all walked around with those.

>> Wendy:

I know. It's weird. Yeah.

>> Bridget:

Even this medium size is a big drink.

>> Wendy:

Yeah. Now, the Big Gulp is the small in gas stations.

>> Bridget:

It just kind of points to a state of, you're young and you don't quite have it all together. That's who you are when you're rocking a Big Gulp.

>> Wendy:

Yeah. You're trying to get all that caffeine in before you go work your shift at Flingers.

>> Bridget:

That's right. This place is nice.

>> Wendy:

Yeah.

>> Bridget:

This is nicer than Chachkis, I think.

>> Wendy:

They're renovating our local Applebee's, by the way.

>> Bridget:

Oh, really?

>> Wendy:

They have dumpsters outside, and I'm assuming that's what's happening. Unless it's closing. I haven't heard these. Oh.

>> Bridget:

I haven't been to an Applebee's in a hundred years.

>> Wendy:

Every once in a while, I'm just like, I want to go to Applebee's. I like it. They also have dollar drinks sometimes.

>> Bridget:

Ooh.

>> Wendy:

So you go and have, like, five margaritas.

>> Bridget:

Okay. All right. I love it. Let's do it. Oh. Ron Livingston was completely starstruck by Jennifer Anson. And he was like, I tried to hold it in for a couple days and then caved.

>> Wendy:

So this is 1999, so. Yeah. She's right in the middle of Friends frenzy. It's still on the air at this point. Yeah. That's a little bit of a weird pairing, but it's funny. She wanted to do it, I guess, because it was a good movie. I don't know.

>> Bridget:

Yeah, I love it. Highly recommend. We didn't have to watch it again.

>> Wendy:

No, because now I kind of want to, though. I know.

>> Bridget:

Me too. We will.

>> Wendy:

We will re watch it just for the fun of it.

>> Bridget:

Okay.

>> Wendy:

I don't have anything else.

>> Bridget:

Anything else.

>> Wendy:

Douche. With our podcast, we would be remiss if we didn't quote the O face.

>> Bridget:

Oh, do it.

>> Wendy:

I'm gonna give her my o face.

>> Bridget:

O, o, o, O. I don't know.

>> Wendy:

I can't remember the rest of the quote, but flicking beans.

>> Bridget:

Lumber.

>> Wendy:

Oh, oh, oh.

>> Bridget:

It reminds me of like Bender from Futurama.

>> Wendy:

Yeah.

>> Bridget:

Okay. Well, did we do it?

>> Wendy:

I think we did it.

>> Bridget:

We flicked some beans.

>> Wendy:

Okay. Love you. Bye.

>> Bridget:

Bye. Party all night long.
