Speaker 1:

Welcome to today's podcast. We are super excited to be talking about a topic that is such an important part of our industry and that is, you know, really focusing on building relationships with others. That's right. We're going to be talking about the power of networking and what can do for you and your team and your business today.

Speaker 2:

Awesome. So what is even networking? And so if you look at the definition of networking, it's an open work or structure in which people come together to learn more about something or someone. So when you think about networking, like just coming from that space of like, hey, how can I use this networking abilities or my networking abilities or my team's networking abilities to really grow something extraordinary?

Speaker 1:

Yes, that's so great and I think you know it even goes on to talk about really that it's for like mutual assistance or support. You know, and so we all know, hey, it takes a village to raise a child, but it also takes a village to raise a business and to make it be successful. You know, for all parties involved, when we have the power of networking on our side, you know it's like easy. You know you're just a phone call away from every answer and you know you get to support others in your community. You get to support others inside of your industry and beyond.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and I think the most beautiful part of networking is to really the most important place to come from is like, how do I build relationships with the community? How do I build relationships with people? Because at the end of the day, we are in the relationship business and so just taking a deep dive into, hey, like I'm going to build this relationship with someone, I'm going to get to know them, understand what's important to them, you know what are their likes and wants and desires, and when I understand that, I can build that relationship and then we're truly able to network and support one another.

Speaker 1:

Yes, it's a really beautiful place to live in, you know, and and so, looking at that community aspect first, you know there's so many different organizations and you know local businesses that you could foster relationships with that could be mutually beneficial, you know, for both of you.

Speaker 1:

I know pretty much every community is going to have an area Chamber of Commerce. You know that really they're there to help support businesses and see them thrive. I know Jen and I both do things inside of our local Chamber of Commerce and just getting to meet people inside of different industries is so impactful, you know, and there's so many things that I wasn't even aware of that the Chamber does like, you know, advocating, you know, for any change as far as like bills and and laws and things go. You know they really do want to see businesses be able to do that and so you know that's where you can really be successful and communities grow and thrive. And so when you can build a relationship with a Chamber that's local to you, you really can start to build that network really quickly for yourself.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, because you know it's networking with the community, but also like networking within your industry. You know, I truly believe that gone are the days of competition is not a bad thing, but why do we have to be in competition when there is enough to go around for everybody? Like so truly coming from that place of abundance, and like you can learn so much, so much information and knowledge from other salon owners by just sharing and giving. And so I think that's another aspect when it comes to networking is like what relationships in your community can you build with the other salon owners, because it's so powerful when a team of people come together with a common goal or a common vision, which is hopefully to make our industry better is that you can learn so much from one another.

Speaker 1:

Yes, that is so true, and we actually are super excited.

Speaker 1:

We're getting ready to head off to Cabo for one of our intensive trainings so that we can have a group of like-minded individuals together inside of our industry to create something greater. And I think that that's one of the most powerful things of networking together with the right people and with incredible people is that you do have that power behind really truly making change. So making change inside of your company, making change inside of the industry and really just making a change inside of the world at large, because I think the beautiful part about our industry is that people are so excited to come in and see us each day, and I love to talk about how we're almost like the honeybees of the world. We're pollinating the world and we just aren't even aware, and so when we pour great things into our teams and they pour great things into the people around them, they're building that network, and so it really can be a really powerful place to be in, especially when you are surrounded with other salon and spa beauty business owners that are very like-minded to you.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I love that you said that, linsen. When you build that relationship with other salon owners, it really helps you to create connection, as if if somebody is working for you and they decide they wanna go work with someone else, work for someone else in your town, that that's okay. Like to have that connection with that salon owner so that it comes from a place of like love and letting that person choose what's gonna be best for them, instead of, well, lindsay, she's going to work for you, like I don't want whatever. And so I think is like, if we really think about our intentions on this earth is to really create a more beautiful space, is like to really be able to have that relationships and understand that there's a perfect fit for everyone. And like how can we make this industry a even better industry than it is?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I love that. And, Jim, when you said that, it really just kind of started to paint the picture for me in my mind of really having that community over competition and really looking out for your neighbors who are also salon owners. And when you built that relationship like you were just talking about, you can call them and say, hey, sue just applied here and I saw that she had been with you and so I just wanted to just check in with you before we went any further. And not that you're looking for someone's approval or sign off. But I always think it's important to me to have a good relationship with other salon owners and I've been on both sides of it I'm sure everybody listening has been on both sides of it as well where you can have a great relationship with one salon owner and then you have us.

Speaker 1:

There might be a salon owner in your community that struggles to build those relationships with others and could potentially be tearing people down. And I think that you can't change who people are, but the more that you can network with the right people and encourage and show other people, hey, it's possible to get along. Like Jen said, there's enough to go around. I always like to say we can't do everybody's hair in town, and nor would we want to because we'd be exhausted and so you want some other people around to be able to serve the different needs that people have. And when you're able to build those relationships, it's wonderful, because if you don't have space to get someone in, you can be like, hey, go visit XYZ Salon, they might be able to see you today and I know that they would take great care of you.

Speaker 1:

I think that that really truly is such a beautiful place to be at, like it just gives you so much comfort and peace and releases those feelings of is someone trying to poach someone? Or I would personally never try to poach anyone from anyone else. But I also know, hey, we've got a really strong master's program for people to go through, and that's what's most important to us. But I believe most Salon owners probably feel that way, and so if you can work on creating those great relationships with people, you just automatically have each other's backs, and then if you run out of some supply or something that you need, it's easy. Hey, you can just call them up and say do you care if we borrow a tube of color or some eyebrow wax sticks or whatever it could be for you. When you build that network with somebody just down the street from you. It's super important as well.

Speaker 2:

I love that you said that. I'm thinking about one time when I had an employee that we decided was mutual, that we just go our separate ways, and I said you know what? But I think I have the perfect salon for you, like contact salon, abc, um, cause I think their culture would be like the best for you and you could tell like her whole body language change. She's like really you would do that for me, like you, you really think that that would be great for me. And so you know, at the end of the day, is is salon owners. I think it's really a beautiful space to come from, is to create opportunities for everyone and you know what they do with those opportunities is on them. But to really be able to, um, you know, serve in a in a beautiful way really gives you a huge payoff in the long run.

Speaker 1:

Absolutely. And so you know, if you're wondering how would I even go about doing this, you know, literally just send somebody a message down the street from you that owns a salon, or somebody that you admire in your community, and say, hey, you know, I just wanted to let you know like I I see what you're doing in the community and I admire it, and I know you know one of my goals is to make the, the beauty industry more beautiful, and so I just wanted to let you know, like I see that you're you're doing the same thing, and so, um, if you ever want to connect about anything, I'd love to, or if you ever want to go grab coffee, I'd love to. Otherwise, just know I'm rooting for you too, and you know, just even thinking about getting a message like that, how powerful that would feel to know that, hey, somebody who you would typically view as your competition, you know is rooting for you and they want to see you win. I think you know that's how we make a change inside of our industry and truly inside of our world. I think you know we're all kind of seeing it right now, like Taylor Swift is really in the spotlight right now, and you know whether you are a huge swifty fan or you're not.

Speaker 1:

I think the way that we speak about other people and about you know specifically women in this, in this scenario, really shows a lot about our character, you know, and so we can really learn a lot from this scenario that's going on, because who cares if you like her or if her music is not your thing, whatever it might be Like? The truth is she hasn't done anything personally to any of us, you know, and she's trying her hardest to put a lot of good out in the world, and I just really love and respect that about her. And so when you see another beauty business owner who is doing that exact same thing or who is helping you in some way or helping the industry in some way, let them know hey, you know, I see you, you're doing amazing things, and just imagine how great you know that will. That will give them some more fuel for their fire to continue to do great things in the world.

Speaker 2:

Mm-hmm, I love that. So, as you continue to make those connections with salon owners and your community, there's another aspect of it too, which is networking beyond the industry. So think about, at the end of the day, we're all playing the same game of business. There might be the beauty business, the car business, the dental business, whatever it may be is, but sometimes I've learned some of the most important, powerful knowledge from somebody outside of our industry.

Speaker 2:

I think it is so beneficial to build those relationships with other business owners that are not just in the beauty business, because you never know when you might have a leaky pipe that you need the plumbing business for, you never know when you might be ready for that second location and you need to have that baking relationship to network, to explore some financing. And so, just like Lindsay said, where you're reaching out and thinking about who is it that you want to be surrounded by, you can do the same thing when it comes to networking beyond the industry, doing some research on local businesses that are in your area. Look at their mission. Does it fit close to your mission? Does their website look like maybe guests that you serve as well? So how can you make that connection and how can you unite to really create something extraordinary?

Speaker 1:

That's such a beautiful thing to look at and I think one of the most powerful things about our industry is that we are great at relationship building, and I think a lot of people who are just naturally great at relationship building are just drawn to our industry. And so it's almost like you become the connector for people too. So, like Jen said, like hey, you've got all these people and you also then get to connect others with the right people and, you know, almost become, you know, the networking hotspot. So you know, maybe 50 years ago the salon used to be where people would come to hear gossips. And you know, I would like to think, hey, those days are gone. I'm sure it still exists in some areas. You know, but what if you were the connector? You know you were the place that people came to find some great connections.

Speaker 1:

And you know, I think, that there's always opportunities, you know, when you're building those relationships with people, to really work on. Hey, who can I connect with who? And you know, really, just make this community an even better place, so that you know, because wherever you live, I hope you love it. If you don't, I hope that you find the place that you love or make it an even better place. But you know, just imagine if everybody felt all the love that you had for your community. And you know, I think that us, with our relationship building, can really work on the power of those connections and building a stronger community for sure.

Speaker 2:

I love that. You said that, lindsay, and it's like the Maya Angelou quote. It says I come as one, but stand is 10,000. And to me that is just so powerful is when you have that right network of people behind you, like even when you're facing that challenging situation, like it gives you that courage to know that, hey, I come as one, but stand is 10,000.

Speaker 1:

That's one of my all time favorites here. I just you know she is just a beautiful human being and I think you know we could all learn a lot from her and so many amazing beautiful people in the world. So you might be thinking, okay, this is all great, I do some of these things already. Maybe you don't do some. So if you're looking for something that you can really do, you know, right away, after you know you get to the salon or you know, on your next free hour, you know really just reach out, send a couple of messages. You know, send us a message and say, hey, you know, I thought of this idea.

Speaker 1:

You would love to be a part of your network. You know, if you have any ideas for podcasts or if you have questions that you would like for us to answer on a future podcast, feel free to shoot us an email. Hello at the phdprogramcom. Or you can send us a DM on Instagram, facebook or any other talk. Wherever you hang out, whatever platform you hang out on, you know. So we'd love to be a part of your network.

Speaker 1:

But then also, you know, message one salon owner in your town, message another person who's in another industry, who you just admire as a business owner and then you know, really look for some, some ways to branch out. You know, maybe it is your chamber, maybe you want to. You know, do some volunteer work. You want to start serving on a board inside of your town. I know that pretty much every you know, no matter what your favorite charity is, there's always somebody who is looking for additional help, and that is a beautiful way to network. So that could be one of the things that you do. But just take action right away, because you know that givers game philosophy is when you give, you will receive, and of course, we never give to receive. But it is just such a beautiful philosophy of knowing hey, if I have some of these back, they're probably going to have mine too, and just seeing what that can create inside the world is a wonderful thing.

Speaker 2:

Excuse me, Awesome, alright, guys. So cheers to creating an incredible net worth. That our network. That will increase your net worth and so look inside that community, inside the industry, beyond the industry, and cheers to coming as one best standing is 10,000. Have a beautiful day.
