Speaker 1:

Crafting Expertise in Not-for-Profit Governance. Welcome back to Boardroom Bound, a special sub-series here on the Disruptor Podcast. I'm your host, john Kuntz, and I've spent over 35 years immersed in the world of not-for-profit boards immersed in the world of not-for-profit boards. Today we're diving deep into a topic close to my heart crafting expertise in not-for-profit governance. My journey in this field began in the corporate world at IBM, a company that instilled the values of community service and volunteering into its employees. These early experiences paved the way for my extensive involvement in non-for-profit governments. From my first board position at the Cleveland Site Center in 1995, to serving on multiple boards like Fieldstone Farm, three Corner Round and the Boy Scouts of America, to my current role as president of the board of the Horses and Humans Research Foundation, I've gained firsthand insights into the complexities, the nuances, of effective governance. So much so that I have written two books. The most recent is called the Board Builder's Blueprint, a strategic guide to creating exceptional not-for-profit leadership. In this book I talk about three key takeaways for any new board president. Number one passion is paramount. Building a high-performance board starts with recruiting genuinely passionate individuals about your organization's mission. It's not just about filling seats, it's about finding dedicated champions to your cause. Two cultivate a culture of collaboration. Foster an environment where open communication, collaboration and a shared vision thrive. A mission-driven board culture is essential for a success. Three commitment to continuous learning. The journey of not-for-profit governance is one of continuous learning and development. Stay engaged, seek growth opportunities and never stop refining your leadership skills. Remember, a high-performance board isn't just a compliance body. It's a driving force for innovation, growth and sustainable impact. By investing in your board's development, you're investing in the future of your organization and the community you serve. I encourage you to reflect on your own board structure and dynamics. Are you fostering a culture of passion, collaboration, continuous learning? If not, it's time to disrupt the status quo and embrace a new approach to governance.
