Hey, hey, did you know that only a little more than half of teens it's actually 58% of your peers in the US actually feel like they get the support they need, like emotionally and socially? That means four out of every 10 teens don't always feel safe, noticed or like someone is really there for them. That's not just my opinion, it's from the American Psychological Association and the CDC. So if you or your friends ever feel invisible or like you're not getting the support you need, you're definitely not alone and I want to help you change that. You're probably like well, who are you? I am Crystal J, the empowerment goddess, the who Am I expert and certified somatic trauma-informed coach. I am a parent of two teens and one young adult who's in the army.
Speaker 1:I just want to take a few minutes of your time to share some things with you. Is that okay? I hope you said yes. So this is what I really want to talk to you about and this is hopefully is going to help you, especially if things have been feeling heavy lately. Maybe something online that didn't sit right, maybe your body feels anxious, even if your brain says you're fine, or maybe you feel stuck and don't know how to talk about it, whatever brought you here? I want you to know this you deserve to feel safe. You deserve to feel seen and to be seen for who you really are, and you deserve support that actually helps you, empowers you not judgment and not pressure. You don't have to figure everything out at once, but you do have the right to take the next step. I'm here to talk with you and walk with you through that. Is that okay?
Speaker 1:Now let's talk about something a lot of people don't explain what stress actually feels like in your body. Sometimes stress looks like anger or snapping at people. Other times it's going quiet, zoning out, feeling heavy, like you just weighed down. Maybe your chest gets tight or your heart races, you can't focus, or you feel nothing, just nothing at all. Now, that's not you being dramatic. It is actually part of your nervous system trying to protect you. It's called a stress response and it's completely normal. The good news you can learn how to work with your body instead of fighting it.
Speaker 1:When your brain senses danger, even emotional danger, it hits the alarm like bing, bing, bing, bing, bing. That's survival mode and it's not your fault. You might feel panicked, frozen or just want to shut everything down. That's your brain doing its job. It's made to protect you, to trigger that fight, flight or freeze response. The thing is you're not stuck there, which is great. You can reset your system, calm your brain and feel back in control, one step at a time.
Speaker 1:So let's practice three tools you can use anytime that things feel just too big. So the first one is grounding. I like to call it the power press. So you put both feet on the floor like you're grounding to the earth. Imagine roots going from your bottom of your feet into the floor, just holding you steady. You're grounded there.
Speaker 1:Okay, now I want you to press your hands firmly together. You can do it like praying hands. Some people interlock their fingers. Either one. I want you to press your hands firmly against each other like a push, okay, okay. And I want you to take three slow, deep breaths, okay. So it'll look like this. That's your body saying I got you Now the Havening's Touch or the swipe.
Speaker 1:You gently rub your arms from your shoulders down to your elbows, kind of like a light massage. Right, and the thing about this if you need to go harder, pressure you can. You want to go softer, you can. While you're doing this, I want you to say in your head can, while you're doing this, I want you to say in your head I'm safe, I'm in control. Or even, if you feel, if you feel bold, say it out loud I'm safe, I'm in control, I'm safe, I'm in control. These are simple words with a big shift I'm safe, I'm in control.
Speaker 1:The other one is shake it out, or the shake right. So you stand up, or you can even do it sitting down right, and you just shake out your hands and you roll your shoulders. That's one of my favorites, because it's like you roll your shoulders. That's one of my favorites because it's like oh, that's released, though, loosen up those muscles there. Okay, you can bounce a little, right, just do whatever. Okay, and it might feel silly, but shaking actually helps your body release the stress. Okay, now you don't need fancy equipment to take care of yourself. You just need a few real tools and a little practice.
Speaker 1:So the next thing I want to talk to you about or share with you, if that's okay is about speaking up when it's hard Talking about what's really going on with you and I know sometimes it can feel awkward to do so. It may even feel scary. But staying silent doesn't mean you're safe. It just means you're carrying it alone and you don't have to, and I want to help you with that. So if you're stuck, try something like this okay, go to your parent and say something happened online and I don't know how to talk about it, but I know that I need to. Or you can say can I tell you something? I'm not sure how to explain it, but it's important. You don't have to say it perfectly. One thing with my kids they know they can just be like mom, dad, can we talk? And they know that they have a safe space to talk about whatever without worried about getting in trouble, because we are here to make sure that they are safe, seen and supported, and it's important for you to have that as well, instead of feeling like you're having to carry it alone. So, again, you don't have to say it perfectly, you just have to say something.
Speaker 1:And that first sentence, that's you being strong, because you see, you were never meant to figure everything out alone. Your voice matters, even if it shakes. Your feelings matter, even even if they don't make sense right away. And asking for help, that's not weakness, that's strength, that's wisdom. It's an awesome thing for you to do. You're allowed to take up space, you're allowed to ask for what you needed and you're allowed to feel safe.
Speaker 1:I know this was a lot and I want to make sure you leave with something real. So pick up your safe scene and supported kit, a scent satchel and many empowerment sacks with grounding tools you can use anytime. No pressure, no questions, just something for you to keep with you when things just feel too big. And if someone in your life wants to know more, or even if you want to know more about what I shared with you today, share this with your parent, your mentor or your youth leader or whoever that person is in your life a grandparent, right, you can say. I watched a short video from someone who helps people feel seen and supported when life seems stuck. She helps them take steps forward. Her name a trusted adult. You are safe, you are seen, you are supported. You are safe, you are seen, you are supported. One more time you are safe, you are seen, you are supported.
