We get into their origin story, from early roots in the area to more than a decade on the corporate grind, then a bold move back to Southwest Florida with a young family. Bri and Taylor share why they chose to buy an existing family-run tiki cruise business and protect the legacy, and how their tagline “seek the adventure, build the memory, capture the moment” shows up in the way they run every trip.

Meet The Nautical Tiki Owners
"Cabo" JimWelcome, Fort Myers Beach, good neighbors. Today we are with Bree and Taylor, the owners of Nautical Tiki Cruises, right here on Fort Myers Beach in the Bayside, right back behind Snug Harbor, right? That's right. Very good, very good. So before we get into everything, why don't you share a little bit about how you guys ended up here?
From Corporate Grind Back To Florida
"Cabo" JimI think you should start that.
Speaker 4Yes. You're the reason why we started here, right?
Bri JohnsonFor the Jake Carter reason. Yeah. So Tayl and I have always been visionary people. We when we graduated from college, we actually um made a pact that we were gonna move down to Fort Myers. Um we lived in Fort Myers and um right after college, uh he was a delivery driver at Jimmy John's, and I worked at the Edison um as a beverage cart girl for the Fort Myers Country Club. And if life kind of took us in the way that we wanted it to, we you know made a promise to each other that we would eventually bring ourselves back to the Fort Myers, the Fort Myers area.
Speaker 4Right.
Bri JohnsonUm, and that's just kind of how life brought us back here. We ended up moving back up to Pennsylvania after six months of living here. Um, and then what, how many years later? We were on the corporate grind for 10 plus years. We started, you know, we got engaged, we got a family, we actually ended up, we had got married at Tarpon Launch out in Boquilia. Okay, wow. So we've always had kind of had our roots connected here. Yeah, we have a had connection here. Right. Um, and you know, one of the most interesting things about it was his parents had had a place in Golf Harbor, and that's where we stayed after college. And then they ended up building out in St. James City. Um, and once we got married, had started having kids, it was just like, you know, when's life gonna bring us back to Fort Myers? And every time we would come back to the area, we would cry leaving.
Speaker 4Like we just didn't want to leave.
Bri JohnsonWe didn't want to leave.
Speaker 4I get it.
Bri JohnsonNobody wants to leave. Nobody wants to leave. Um, so we just knew that it was all gonna be in the right timing. And um, I was actually, I had we had a two-year-old. I was pregnant with my second.
Speaker 4All right.
Bri JohnsonUm, we came down here for Thanksgiving, and um we looked at a house and we're like, if it's meant to be, it'll be. And they called us in March of that year in 2024 and uh said, Hey, you guys want to move? And we packed up our life. We had a six-week-old baby at the time, um, two and a half year old, a six-week old, and we brought ourselves down here to Fort Myers and um have always loved it. And then uh yeah, a year ago, um, we had uh a year and a half ago, we actually have uh Matlache Tiny Village out in Matlache. And um we had a year and a half old, so he's 18 months. I was pregnant with the one that's actually sitting over here. And uh we started looking at ways to expand our offering. Um we always tell a story of seek the adventure, build the memory, capture the moment. Yeah, um, that's been our tagline since we got married. And I saw nautical tiki cruises and I said to Taylor, I said, I think you might like this. We have to have that. We have to have that. So let's see what we can do about it.
"Cabo" JimSo that's how Nautical Tiki Tours was, I might say, born because you bought the existing business, right?
Bri JohnsonYeah, we bought the existing business from uh Danna Marie Hamilton, who have created a beautiful and wonderful legacy, and um that's kind of how why we're here and how we ended up staying here was we wanted to create that legacy. They were family-owned and operated. It is so important for us to continue that. And um Yeah, that's kind of how we ended up here because it's been here. You know, they started the business back in, I think, what, 2022, 2023. Okay. Um, and um, you know, we acquired it um just this past March and wanted to make sure we continued that family feel.
"Cabo" JimThat's and I love it. Yeah, and who doesn't want to be on the water here in Fort Maryers Beach, right? Right. You're on the base side too. So so somebody who's never been on a tiki cruise, I don't know who hasn't, but there are people that have to be able to do that. Lots of people, I know.
Speaker 4Yeah.
What A Tiki Cruise Feels Like
"Cabo" JimWhat's the experience like? How would you describe that?
Taylor JohnsonYeah, absolutely. I mean, what's not to love? You had six bar stool seats and two adirondack chairs on this on the front of this boat.
Speaker 4Yep.
Taylor JohnsonAnd um, you know, it's a BYOB cruise. Um, we do have actually a restroom on board as well, which is obviously uh nice thing to have, especially um, you know, some people like to load up and bring a lot of uh beverages. Yep, yep. Um but yeah, we depart right here from Snug Harbor, which is uh an incredible location. Could you know couldn't ask for a better spot. Um the captain goes through a quick kind of safety briefing, and then you know it's just absolute fun um from here on out. So um we do have a nice big speaker on the back of the boat. So um the guests go on. Yep, exactly. So when the guests want to connect to it, we can absolutely do that. Um then we go on typically um well, we offer 90-minute cruises uh and uh three-hour cruises, and we have customizable cruises as well. Uh but the captain will take us around in the bay back here and you know, kind of go through like a little bit of the history and talk about the area, you know, if guests want to hear about it. But some guests, you know, they just want to chill and hang out and relax and have a great time. And you know, the captain's here for any questions and uh, you know, commentary that you know they would like. And then um, yeah, you know, a lot of the times we spot uh, you know, dolphin, manatee, all sorts of different wildlife. Yeah. Sure. And um, yeah, it's always you know a great time. I don't think anybody's gotten off this boat and has had a bad time.
90 Minutes Vs Three Hours
Taylor JohnsonThat's a good thing.
"Cabo" JimSo what's the difference between the 90 minute and the three-hour version? Yeah, that's it.
Taylor JohnsonLet's say three-hour tour because that's uh Gilligan's Island, right? So the difference between a 90-minute cruise and a and a three-hour cruise is so the three-hour cruise, you know, it can be customizable to the group. So if the group wants to go, you know, to any kind of local restaurants and our bars, we can absolutely pull up there.
Speaker 4Okay.
Taylor JohnsonUh but most of the people choose to go to the beach um or or um a uh sandbar. All right. So we can absolutely do those things. And uh a lot of the times it the group will go and hang out at the beach for 45 minutes to an hour, and then the 90-minute cruises, you're typically gonna stay on the boat the whole time. It's it's short, um, you know, but it's a it's a really great option, especially if somebody wants to just you know have the option to get out on the water.
"Cabo" JimAbsolutely. And how many people can you get on this? You've got a couple of different boats, right?
Taylor JohnsonYeah, we have a couple boats. Um, this boat fits up to six passengers, and then we are family friendly as well, so anybody that wants to bring their kids on board, we can absolutely do that. And then we have another boat that fits up to 18 passengers. Um that's strictly a private boot boat. Um, so you know, big parties, anybody over seven guests, um, that's the boat to book if you want to have, you know, a private party and a excursion.
"Cabo" JimVery nice. And and being right next to Snug Harbor, I'm sure if people want to grab food, they can grab a little food to take with them on the trip as well.
Taylor JohnsonOf course, yeah, we absolutely love that. You know, it's a great option. Um, obviously BYOB and food as well. And there's no better spot to just grab some lunch or bre or dinner or whatever it is right here at Snug Harbor and bring it on board with you. Yeah.
Bri JohnsonBefore, during, or after. Right. A lot of folks will stop in for lunch and then get on a cop on the cruise or happy hour and then up on the cruise and then or voice versus some people bring um food and stuff to go um and you know, eat it here on the boat as they're cruising, or we have folks that get off the boat and grab dinner um right in this area. It's it's a great little area.
"Cabo" JimI mean, a chef rizzo here is great as well, too. So what do people see? I mean, most people think Fort Myers Beach and they think beach, right? You know, what do they see in the back bay back here that you know maybe they wouldn't think about seeing, you know, other than wildlife.
Taylor JohnsonYeah, absolutely. Yeah, there's a lot of wildlife. There's a ton of dolphins around. A lot of the dolphin actually like to kind of cruise along with the boat too, which is pretty fun. Obviously, you can never guarantee those types of things. Right, yeah. Uh, but there's some pretty awesome sights to see back here. We got the big shrimp boats around the back. Yeah, um, you know, there's a there's a cool little um sandbar islands that have all sorts of different kind of birds on it. Um, you know, cruising by all the waterfront restaurants and all that type of stuff. It's just nice to see, you know, and the and the beautiful homes out here. It's just nice to see kind of cruising around and checking out things um from somewhere that you're not gonna see from land.
"Cabo" JimThat's what I mean. You're not gonna see that over on the beach. No. And seeing wildlife, sometimes you see the dolphins over there, but you don't see as much as you do in the back bay here. And it's just it's very relaxing back here as well, too. Yeah, absolutely. There you go. So, what's uh what am I gonna look for here? I don't know. We'll edit that out. Let me see like my questions here. So you so event-wise, what do you host the most
Parties Music And Karaoke Add On
"Cabo" Jimof? I mean, I know bachelorette parties are big, birthdays are big, anniversaries. Are there certain things, events that people seem to gravitate towards tiki tours for?
Taylor JohnsonYeah, absolutely. Great question. I'd say the most we've had so far is a lot of bachelorette parties. Really? Yeah, it's a great option for bachelorette parties, especially, you know, most bachelorette parties have a group of, you know, anywhere from like five to sometimes eighteen girls. Right. Um but it's perfect, you know. We have both boats suitable for both kind of you know groups of bachelorette parties. Um we've actually had a lot of kind of corporate outings and corporate gatherings, which I think is a super fun thing. And you know, Bree and I love to kind of push that because we came from the corporate world, you know, we we know what it's like, and we know that it's you know it's a really fun, kind of different thing to do. Absolutely. Um and you know, we've had a handful of guests out and have done that, and they've just had the best time ever, especially like you know, even if it's um, you know, like a group that you know they're trying to work with them or sales or any type of thing, um they absolutely love it. Yeah, they have such a good time, right?
"Cabo" JimYeah, and Bachelorette parties, I mean, it's it's the new Nashville, right? You know, Nashville, right? Come on the beach. Turn to the beach, turn on your country music, right? Speaking of which, so they can bring their phone and they can play whatever music they want on the on the Bluetooth approach.
Taylor JohnsonYeah, absolutely. Yep, yep.
"Cabo" JimThey can play their own playlist and all that good stuff.
Bri JohnsonAnd for our private crews, we actually do have an offering. If they would want to upgrade, they could we have a karaoke machine as well that they can um add on to their uh cruise. And we've had a couple people do that, so that's been really fun. It's a big box carry big box karaoke machine with some microphones and you know, kind of make their own music. Once you get grooving through the speaker.
"Cabo" JimThere are certain songs that come on that you go, oh go, here we go.
Bri JohnsonI mean, it just depends on whatever they like, right? You know, we we're really kind of mindful. We just let the guests kind of do their thing. And um, you know, some folks would prefer that the captain plays their music, and we have playlists and we recommend different things um for the captain to make sure Captain andor mate um to make sure that you know, no matter what, it's it's tailored to the guest experience and what they're looking to do. So sometimes it's party and lots of fun and loud, and other times it's just very chilled back, chilled laid-back vibes of you don't want to hear anything. Like sometimes, you know, as a mom, I'm like, what do I want to do today? So I just want to sit here and listen. I don't want any noise. I just want to hear the water. Exactly. Um, and just some low-key music. Or is it like, okay, let's have a girl's day and let's really enjoy our time.
"Cabo" JimGame on,
Captains Safety And Tailored Trips
"Cabo" Jimgame on. Yeah. So let's talk about your captains a little bit. You got a number of them working with you? How many?
Taylor JohnsonYeah. Um, we have let's see, probably any any kind of where between six and eight captains right now. Um, you know, as we get into season, you know, we're gonna have kind of more structured um schedules for each of them. Um but yeah, we have you know, everybody's uh U.S. Coast Guard uh license captains. Um for the big boat, you have to have a master's license. So a lot of our captains are actually have their master's license, which is you know universal because that way they could drive this boat and take out the big boat. Um so that's super important and great. They're uh all very well experienced captains that have you know, a lot of them have had backgrounds and have done you know excursions and things of the like, like a tiki boat. Yeah. Um, you know, it's so fun to like you know hire a new captain and bring them out here because they're like, oh man, this is just like the most amazing thing I could possibly be doing. Just taking people out, you know, for a tiki cruise. And um, they absolutely love it. And um, you know, they the captains are the most important piece of this business. You know they come in, they want to make the best possible guest experience for all of the guests that come on board. And that's one of the biggest and most important things for Bree and I is like, you know, we've built this business and our other business on on guest experiences. We want people to come out and you know remember these types of things for the rest of their lives. Oh, absolutely. And I think, you know, a lot of people that do come out on the boat, you know, they they might have only been out on the boat, you know, a couple of times or whatever it is. Um but yeah, it's a it's a very you know memorable experience for them. Um, you know, we do have a lot of a ton of locals too that will come out and they come out, you know, on a you know, every couple months or whatever it might be, and they might have their own boats as well. But you know, they just like to you know sometimes they want to be there to ride their exactly, not have to drive their own boat or come out and have a good time. Right. Um so they'll go after their friends and and do it, you know, have fun as well.
"Cabo" JimUm and then captains, uh each one is kind of unique in the sense that they do have their own stories, their own historical or points of interest that they want to point out, or probably favorite spots too, right?
Bri JohnsonYeah, absolutely. I think you know, and and you know, not just the captains but the mates too. Um, you know, we have a first mate, we're required to have a first mate on the the bigger boat. Um so if you book the a private cruise, you have a captain and a first mate, and they just make the experience. Um and they, you know, a lot of you know depends on what the guest is looking for. You know, if the captain wants, if they want a history, if they want a history of the island, history of the island is wonderful. If they want to look at wildlife, you know, getting the dolphins to jump is really like a big thing that a lot of people are looking for. You know, we had a cruise of um some folks that hadn't actually been in rain. They came from the desert. Um and you know, we thought, like we were thinking to ourselves, oh my gosh, this is gonna be horrible. They're gonna get stuck in the rain and they're not gonna like it. They had the best, the time of their lives on the front of the boat, doing the little rain dance. Um, you know, and it just really just depends on what the guest is looking for. And the captain will tailor the crews and their commentary and you know, so whatever the they're seeking.
"Cabo" JimYeah, so whether you're a tourist, a local, there's something to do and something to see and experience to be able to do that.
Bri JohnsonAbsolutely, someone to talk to, um, and just you know, kind of get to know get to know each other. I mean, Taylor and I's biggest thing is that we want to not just create an experience for the guests themselves, but like to create and build those relationships and have conversations.
Put The Phone Away Be Present
Bri JohnsonWe are we live in a world we are so stuck in social media and we're stuck on our phones and technology. And strongly encourage if you're gonna come on the tiki boat, just be present. Yep, soak it all in. It's 90 minutes. You know, you're gonna walk away, you know, take a couple pictures, capture those moments of um of what you're doing, and then just really just be here.

Bri JohnsonUm, it's so important for us to make that happen. Um, because you know, we're you go to a restaurant now and everybody's on their phone and we look at menus on our phone, they're not even talking to each other. We don't even have the opportunity to look at an actual menu anymore. Yeah, everything's on a QR code. Um, so for here, come back, leave your phone away, and take a break from the world. Take a break from the world for a minute and you know, make it what you want.
Speed Round Favorites And Tips
"Cabo" JimAll right. So uh speed round questions here, all right? Okay. Day cruise or sunset cruise? Sunset cruise. Sunset cruise? Absolutely. You're gonna love that one? Or a three-hour cruise.
Taylor JohnsonThose are great two.
Bri JohnsonI would say a day cruise.
Taylor JohnsonYou like a brunch cruise.
Bri JohnsonYes. Oh, I love a good brunch cruise. I love a good brunch cruise. Grab some bagels, grab some fruit, bring them on board. We actually did that with one of Little Belly Mary Mimosa's. We did that with a group of friends, our friends, uh, for her birthday, and it was top notch. Absolutely loved it. Good old brunch cruise. There you go. For me.
"Cabo" JimGolf Bay. Go ahead. What are you gonna say?
Taylor JohnsonI was gonna say I I say sunset just because the sunsets here in Southwest Florida are spectacular. They're just beautiful. But they're you know, both different kind of versions. So exactly. I know this is a speed round, I'm making it long. No, no, no, no, no, no. That's all right.
"Cabo" JimThat's supposed to be to get you to talk a little bit more. So golf or back bay?
Taylor JohnsonUm The Back Bay is nice and peaceful and calm. Yeah, especially on on these boats. So it's nice. But um the you we can go out on the oceanside, especially on the bigger boat.
"Cabo" JimYep. All right, very nice, very nice. Dolphins and manatees. They're so much more fun. I know, right? They're jumping around over. They're so playful. I know, right? Yeah. You get the seacows, they just kind of float there. Dolphins. For sure, right? Um party playlist or laid back music.
Bri JohnsonLaid back.
Taylor JohnsonUh party playlist. Oh boy.
Bri JohnsonAll right, all right.
"Cabo" JimI'm more of a laid back guy. I kind of like it. I'm at the beach and want to relax a little bit. Yes. Best time of the year to be on the water.
Taylor JohnsonAnytime, but you know, but anytime being on a boat is is a great time, for sure. And I think I I uh I particularly I really like the summertime because you do get a nice breeze when you're out on the water on a boat. So it is nice.
Bri JohnsonI'm partial to summer and yeah, and being it's I mean, I think especially for the locals that are here, yeah. If you know, when season ends and you're still here and you're looking for something to do, there's nothing better than going out on a tiki cruise. You don't have to, you know, there's not really any waiting. You know, we have to show up. You just kind of show up.
"Cabo" JimThat's when we come out of the woodwork and we're like, oh, we can go do stuff. Right, exactly, exactly. We don't have to hide. Right.
Speaker 4Yes.
"Cabo" JimThere you go. One thing any first-time passenger should bring. Hmm.
Bri JohnsonThat's a good one.
"Cabo" JimRight. What do they always forget? They're always like, oh, I should have brought that, right? Don't forget your booze. That's the important thing.
Taylor JohnsonYou don't have to be drinking booze, but like drinks, water.
Bri JohnsonUm, I would just I mean, to me, it's just a good time. Like, go into it with an open mind. I'm I'm more on the is this supposed to be a physical, tangible thing that you should bring. Come with an open mind, come with relaxation. Like, you know, a lot of people we live in such a fast-paced world. We're like so stressed out. It's like, what I forgot this, or I didn't bring this, or did I do this right? Or just like, it's all right. You're you're literally coming on a tiki boat. It's okay. If you, you know, we'll make sure you have everything you need to make it a great time for you.
"Cabo" JimSo perfect.

"Cabo" JimThat's it. So one one last question. So um, other than nautical tiki tour cruises, what's uh what's one thing people need to do when they come here in Fort Myers Beach? Or go see, go eat, go what's a place you need to go?

Bri JohnsonYou know, don't just I mean, uh look at the like support the local community. Talk to a local, talk to the bartenders and the folks that you're meeting at when you're eating. Um engage with them. There's lots of good stories, there's lots of um amazing people that live here on Fort Myers Beach. And, you know, this is their life, this is their livelihood. So go and support them and go eat, drink, and be merry.
Taylor JohnsonYeah, come eat at Snug Harbor before or after the cruise. It's the perfect, you know, it's the per it's really the perfect day. You come and you you grab a bite to eat with your friends and family, you know, before the cruise or right after the cruise, and then you go on a tiki cruise and have a great time. There's nothing better to, you know, pair that for a great afternoon or morning.
"Cabo" JimAsk for Chef Rizzo's catch of the day because he's got something interesting over there, and he makes uh makes a mean little meal there. So you have locations here in Fort Myers Beach and Mat Lachey, right? Mm-hmm. So two different locations people can go from depending where they're staying down here, right? Yeah.
Taylor JohnsonYep. Yeah, it's a whole different kind of experience. Matlache is a super laid-back island vibes. Um for anybody that hasn't been out there, it's uh um it's definitely much more quiet than the Fort Myers Beach area. Um but it's it's um it's it's an awesome location. If you've come on a cruise with us at Fort Myers Beach, you should absolutely come and check out the Mat Lachey location just to kind of to see the big major differences.
"Cabo" JimYeah, that's what I mean. You get on water, you see different things that you don't see. Uh yeah, if you go out here on Fort Myers Beach, this is all you're gonna see. But if you go in other areas, you know, get out to Captiva, whatever, yeah. Um different places. But so if somebody's sitting at home right now thinking, you know what, I need to get on a tiki cruise, what should they do? How should they get home?

And um, you know, we are so fortunate and um in such a great you know spot to be part of uh the Fort Myers Beach community. Um it's amazing. It's been part of our lives for um, you know, for many, many years, even though we haven't lived here for many years. I've been coming to this area um for over 20 years. And just to even have the opportunity to live here, um, own a business down at the beach is just incredible. Um it's just a super fun experience. This particularly is just such a super fun experience. I've been working in corporate my entire career and so has a Brie. So to just switch, you know, switch things up and you know, be running it, running tiki cruises at Port Myers Beach. Um, stress level just comes down.
"Cabo" JimExactly.
Taylor JohnsonYeah, it's a different kind of stress now.
