Why Food Matters For Dopamine
SPEAKER_00start off by talking about why food matters for dopamine. Now dopamine doesn't just appear out of thin air. Your body builds it from amino acids, converts it using vitamins, protects it with antioxidants, and relies on your gut to regulate it. So think of dopamine like a house. Tyrosine, which is an amino acid, is the building material. B6, folate, and iron are the construction crew, and they're the vitamins. Antioxidants are the security system. Omega-3s, the fatty acids, are the insulation, and gut bacteria are the maintenance team. So when you feed each part, the whole system is going to work better.
Tyrosine Foods For Dopamine Building
SPEAKER_00Now let's start talking about some of the tyrosine-rich foods, and again, that's the building blocks of dopamine, which is so tyrosine is an amino acid that your body uses to make dopamine. So without enough tyrosine, dopamine production slows down. Now there was a study titled Dietary Tyrosine and Cognitive Performance, published in the Journal of Nutrition back in 2007, and this study explored how dietary tyrosine influences neurotransmitter production, especially dopamine. And researchers found that when tyrosine levels rise, the brain can increase dopamine synthesis or make dopamine, particularly during times of stress, fatigue, or cognitive demand. And they also noted that tyrosine helps maintain mental performance when dopamine levels would otherwise dip. So in other words, tyrosine helps your brain stay resilient, especially when it's under pressure. Okay, so how do we get tyrosine? Well, some foods to include to get tyrosine would include chicken, turkey, eggs, salmon, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, pumpkin seeds, and almonds. Okay, that's great, but how can I add these to my daily diet? Well, to start off, you can make a Greek yogurt parfait with berries and pumpkin seeds. That's a good way to start. Uh you could add eggs to your breakfast, whether it's scrambled, boiled, maybe you like to make an omelet. Snacks. Snack on almonds or pumpkin seeds between meals. So when you get hungry in the afternoon, instead of reaching for that candy bar, reach for some almonds and pumpkin seeds. Choose salmon for dinner twice a week. It's going to give you tyrosine, but it's also going to help give you those omega-3 fatty acids. And then add cottage cheese as a side with fruit. Now I know some people don't like cottage cheese. I personally happen to like cottage cheese, but if you don't, just skip that option. But if you do, cottage cheese with a side of fruit is always a good way to go. Okay, now why they help? Tyrosine is going to give your brain the raw material it needs to make dopamine. So when you eat tyrosine consistently, you support steadier dopamine availability, especially important for people with Parkinson's. Alright, now we've talked about the building block.
B6 Folate Iron For Conversion
SPEAKER_00Let's talk about food that supports dopamine conversion, and that's your vitamins B6, folate, and iron. So tyrosine is only step one. Your body needs B6, folate, and iron to convert tyrosine into dopamine. Now there was a study titled Vitamin B6 Deficiency and Neurotransmitter Synthesis that was published in Neurochemical Research in 2023. And this study demonstrated that B6, vitamin B6, is essential for the enzymatic reactions that convert L-dopa into dopamine. So without adequate B6, the conversion process becomes inefficient, leading to lower dopamine availability. And the researchers also found that B6 deficiency can impair multiple neurotransmitter pathways, not just dopamine. Now there was another study that was published in Lancet that was titled folate and neurotransmitter metabolism. And that was published in 1998. And this study, this landmark study, showed that folate plays a critical role in methylation, which is a biochemical process required for neurotransmitter production. And what they found was that low folate levels were linked to reduced synthesis of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. And the study also highlighted that folate deficiency is common in older adults, making dietary intake even more important. Okay, so how do we get these vitamins? How do we get vitamin B6, folate, and iron? Well, some foods to include. So for vitamin B6, bananas, chickpeas, tuna, and chicken, folate, spinach, lentils, asparagus, and avocado are good choices. And then iron, beans, spinach, fortified cereals, and lean meats. Okay, so how can we add these to our foods to uh help us with our make sure that we get our vitamins B6, folate, and iron? Well, one, you can blend a banana into your morning smoothie. That's a great way to get some vitamin B6. Next is add spinach to soups, omelets, or sandwiches, or just eat a spinach salad. That's also a good way to get your folate. Make lentil soup or try a lentil salad once a week. And that's a great, another great way to get your folate. Make avocado toast or add avocado to salads or sandwiches. And then choose beans as a side dish or add them to chili. So a lot of times you go to a Mexican restaurant, you can get pinto beans or black beans as a side dish. Include those as well, or just make some chili. That's going to help give you the iron that is going to be needed. And then why they help? Well, these nutrients act like biochemical helpers that turn tyrosine into dopamine. So without them, dopamine production slows, even if you're eating enough protein.
Antioxidants That Protect Neurons
SPEAKER_00All right, now let's talk about antioxidant-rich foods that protect dopamine neurons. So oxidative stress is going to damage dopamine neurons, and I've talked about that in the past. Antioxidants are going to help protect them. Now, there was a study that was titled Dietary Antioxidants and Parkinson's Disease Progression that was published in Neurology in 2012. And this was a large-scale study that followed thousands of participants, and it found that diets high in antioxidants, especially vitamin E and flavonoids, were associated with a significantly lower risk of developing Parkinson's disease. Now, for people already living with Parkinson's, higher antioxidant intake was linked to slower symptom progression. Researchers concluded that antioxidants help reduce oxidative stress, which is one of the main drivers of dopamine neuron loss. And then there was another study that was titled Blueberries, Improved Neuronal Signaling, that was published in the Journal of Neuroscience in 1999. And this study examined how blueberries affect aging neurons. And the research found that blueberry antioxidants improve neural communication, reduced inflammation, and enhanced motor performance in animal models. And blueberries were shown to protect dopamine-producing cells from oxidative damage and improve signaling between brain regions. Alright, so how do we get these antioxidants? Well, some foods to include, and these are always my favorite, is berries. Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, all those are great options. Dark leafy green vegetables, spinach, kale, are also loaded with antioxidants, red or purple cabbage, and green tea. I like to drink green tea because of its antioxidant properties. Now, how can we add these foods to our daily diet? Well, you can add half a cup of berries to your breakfast cereal or eat them as a snack or throw them in a smoothie. Drink green tea instead of soda or coffee once a day. So instead of switch out one of the cups of coffee for green tea. Or instead of drinking soda, drink green tea a couple times a day. You can add spinach or kale to pasta, soups, or smoothies. Or just add them to salads as well. You can eat a spinach salad or a kale salad. And then use red or purple cabbage in salads or stir fries. Saute purple cabbage is really good and it's also really good in stir fries as well. Now, why they help? Antioxidants are going to act like firefighters. They're going to reduce inflammation and protect the dopamine-producing cells from damage.
Omega-3 Fats For Signaling
SPEAKER_00Okay, next up is the healthy fats, because what they're going to do is support dopamine signaling. Omega-3 fatty acids help dopamine receptors work better and reduce inflammation. And there was a study called Omega-3 fatty acids improve motor function in Parkinson's that was published in Clinical Interventions and Aging in 2018. And what this study did is it evaluated omega-3 supplementation in people with Parkinson's and it found improvements in motor symptoms, in their mood, and in inflammation markers. Omega-3s were shown to enhance cell membrane fluidity, which helps dopamine receptors communicate more effectively. And the study also noted reductions in depression scores, important because dopamine plays a major role in motivation and mood. Okay, so how do we get omega-3 fatty acids? Well, some good choices are your fatty fish. Salmon, sardines, then walnuts are another good choice. Flaxseed and chai seed. And how do we get these foods in our daily diet? Well, you can add walnuts to oatmeal. You can add walnuts, you can have a spinach salad with walnuts. You can just eat them as a snack. They're a really good snack. I like to eat walnuts. Next, you can sprinkle flaxseed or chai seed into smoothies. You can sprinkle it on cereal. And then try to choose salmon or one of the other fatty fish as your protein at least once to twice a week. And then you can also make tuna or I don't think too many people people like it, but a sardine salad with olive oil and lemon. So tuna is a really great option as well. Now, why they help? Omega-3s help strengthen your brain cell membranes and help dopamine receptors communicate more effectively. So you want to make sure that you're getting your healthy fats into your diet as well.
Gut Health And The Microbiome
SPEAKER_00Now, next up is our gut-friendly foods and the microbiome that matters because your gut produces neurotransmitters and it affects how your body absorbs its medication. Now, there was a study called gut microbiota regulate motor deficits in Parkinson's disease that was published in the journal Cell in 2016. Now, this was a groundbreaking study that showed that gut bacteria directly influence motor symptoms in Parkinson's. So when researchers altered gut bacteria in animal models, motor symptoms worsened or improved depending on the bacteria strains present. The study also found that certain gut bacteria increase inflammation, which can accelerate dopamine neuron loss. So the takeaway, a healthy gut supports better movement, better mood, and better medication response. So we want to try to make sure that we're improving our gut bacteria by having more good bacteria and reducing the number of bad bacteria in our gut. So how can we do that? Well, some foods to include kefir, yogurt with live cultures, sauerkraut, one of my favorites, kimchi, and then high fiber foods like oats, beans, and vegetables. So, how can we add these foods to our diet so that we make sure that we're helping our gut bacteria? Well, we can add kefir to smoothies. We can choose yogurt with live cultures as a snack, add sauerkraut to sandwiches. Or you can have pork and sauerkraut, hot dogs and sauerkraut, put hot sauerkraut on hot dogs. You can make oatmeal with berries and nuts, and then you can add beans to soups, salads, or tacos, like pinto beans or black beans. So a healthy gut is going to help reduce inflammation, it's going to improve your digestion and support better medication absorption. All these are going to help to influence dopamine signaling.
Mood And Motivation Food Boosters
SPEAKER_00Alright, now let's talk about some foods that can boost your mood and motivation. Now, these foods don't create dopamine, but they support your mood and your reward pathways. There was a study called Coco Flavonoids Improve Cognitive Function that was published in Neurology in 2013. And this study found that cocoflavonoids improve blood flow to the brain, especially in regions involved in memory and executive function. I know that's two things that I have problems with. Now, improved blood flow enhances oxygen delivery, which supports dopamine pathways. And then the participants showed better cognitive performance and faster processing speed. So the researchers concluded that cocoflavonoids act as a gentle cognitive enhancer, supporting your mood, motivation, and mental clarity. Now, I think we all like to boost our mood and motivation. So some foods to include would be dark chocolate and try to get the ones that are 70 plus percent cacao. Green tea again can help boost your mood, and then citrus fruits. That's your orange, lemons, grapefruits, limes. So how can we add these foods to our day-to-day diet? Well, enjoy one square of dark chocolate after lunch. Drink green tea in the afternoon and get a gentle lift. And then you can add orange slices or lemon slices to water or throw them in your salads. I just had a salad the other day that had oranges in it. It was really delicious. So you can add oranges or just eat oranges plain. I also love grapefruit. Grapefruit's another great option. These foods are going to help support your blood flow, mood, and cognitive clarity, and they're all connected to dopamine pathways. The
Timing Protein With Levodopa
SPEAKER_00last section I want to talk about is foods to time carefully with Levadopa. And this is one I did a podcast on earlier, and that's protein, because protein is going to compete with Levadopa for absorption. And there was a study called Protein Redistribution Diet Improves Motor Fluctuation. And that was published in Neurology in 1987. But this study introduced the concept of the protein redistribution diet because researchers found that when people with Parkinson's ate most of their protein later in the day, levadopa absorption improves significantly. Participants experience fewer off periods, smoother movement, and more predictable response. The study also noted that even small changes in protein can make a noticeable difference. So you don't want to take your carbodopa levadopa and then eat a heavy protein meal right away. Either take your medication and then wait 30 to 60 minutes to eat the protein, or vice versa. So, how to do this? Try to keep your breakfast and light protein a little bit lower, because that's typically when most people have most of their off periods is morning and afternoon. And then save your protein-rich meals for dinner. And then pair your morning medication with fruit, oatmeal, toast, smoothies, or yogurt. Okay, why is this going to help? Well, this timing strategy helps Lebidopa absorb more effectively, and that's going to help you reduce your off periods. Okay,
A Simple Daily Dopamine Plan
SPEAKER_00let's talk about a daily dopamine plan. What are some actionable steps that can help us with our getting these into our diet? Number one, start your morning with tyrosine. So try to get some eggs, yogurt, or nuts. And then number two is to add in antioxidants. Throw in some berries, some spinach, some green tea. And we talked about ways to do that. Could be salads, could be putting it in smoothies, and try to replace maybe a cup of coffee or the sodas with green tea. Number three, support conversion. So include B6 and folate foods daily. And we talked about which foods those are a little bit earlier. Number four, protect your neurons. You want to eat omega-3s twice a week. And we talked about trying to eat the fatty fish, salmon at least twice a week, maybe, and then uh walnuts are another good option. Feed your gut is number five. Add one fermented food per day. That could be kefir, could be sauerkraut, kimchi, beans, any of those that are going to help the fermentation process in your in your gut. Number six, time protein wisely. Lighter protein portions early and then eat more at dinner. And then number seven, track what works. Track energy, your mood, your movement, and your medication response. All right, now food is one of the most powerful tools that you have, not to cure Parkinson's, but to support your dopamine system, protect your brain, and improve your daily quality of life. Remember, it's not the big changes that you make all at one time. It's just the little changes that you make on a daily basis that are going to add up and have a big effect. So start out small, maybe add one to two things for week one, and then just slowly add additional things each week to so that your body gets adjusted to it. And hopefully that you'll find that eating a better diet is going to help you in your daily life. So
