Life on Tour

Speaker 1

Hi, this is Jess and this is Jade from Hotel Fiction, and you're listening to Music In my Shoes.

Speaker 2

He's got the feeling in his toe-toe. He's got the feeling and it's out there growing.

Speaker 3

Hey everybody, this is Jim Boge and you're listening to Music In my Shoes. That was Vic Thrill kicking off episode 49. As always, I'm thrilled to be here with you. Let's learn something new or remember something old. Back on episode 35, we spoke to Hotel Fiction members Jade Long and Jess Thompson 14 episodes ago. I can't believe it's been that long. The Athens band was getting ready to start their US tour and currently are in the midst of a short break. They were kind enough to make some time for us and they're actually joining us in the studio today. Welcome back, jade and Jess, to Music in my Shoes.

Speaker 1

Thanks for having us.

Speaker 3

Hey, seriously, I can't believe it's basically been three months since we talked. I mean time has gone quickly. You know, when we last spoke, your latest album, staring at the Sun, had come out. We had talked you were getting ready to go on the tour. So tell us a little bit. You know what's the response. What are people thinking of the album? And tell us about leg one of the big tour. It's been awesome. So far it's been a whirlwind.

Speaker 4

I feel like we've been just touring in the van with our band for like a month and, yeah, they've been the best shows I think we've ever played Maybe the best crowds, best audiences we've ever had. We've ever played maybe the best crowds, best audiences we've ever had. Just feels very like warm and like we actually have a community around us for kind of the first time, I think, other than like our Georgia community that I feel like we've always had since day one, but feels like we're maybe doing something special. And um, yeah, also we have a bit of like a hive mind just touring together, I feel like, um, where we just like our sense of humor um kind of becomes one with our band and then it's kind of impossible to like socialize with other people afterwards. Yeah, so kind of in that state, we went to a wedding like two days ago and I just was like I didn't, I had nothing to say when you said hive mind, I was thinking of um, we played quiplash.

Speaker 1

Have y'all ever played quiplash before?

Speaker 1

no it's like this game where you um, where you put up all these like funny answers to really random prompts that the game gives you, and everyone puts up an answer and you vote on what's funniest. And the whole band was together playing it in um, the house of our friend stacy in washington dc, and we all kept putting the same answers, like there was one where like four or five of our answers were all so similar and we were voting on them. Or like someone would say what do you not want to smell when you get in the van? And one person says aaron's feet and the other person says gideon's shoes, or like something similar.

Speaker 5

So yeah, we've been um forming a hive mind together that's really cool, because sometimes bands go out on tour and then they get in fights and you know it just like makes things harder, but you guys sound like you're getting along amazingly it's been good.

Speaker 1

I mean we've. We've had fights before, you know.

Speaker 1

But I mean, people are bound to like annoy you from time to time, but I do feel like this is the first not the first time, but the the tour that we've been the closest, I think one thing that, um, I feel like we all credit to our closeness is our nightly high low kudos, which is when we all give our highs of the day and our lows of the day and then we all give a kudos to someone in the van, preferably that like did something nice for them, and I feel like it helps us be on the same page of like. Oh, I know how Jade's day was and I know what the worst part of her day was and what's making her happy right now, and also I get to say thank you for doing something for me, so I think that that's something that keeps us tight-knit.

Speaker 5

That is so smart to do that.

Speaker 3

Maybe if Jane's Addiction had done that, they would be in a better place. Or oasis, yeah, which is coming back. Or you know we, we spoke a few episodes ago and ario speed wagon, and you know the kinks and the ramones, the remote, you know just so many different bands. So last time we spoke you one of you mentioned hey, pray for the van. So tell us about the van. Has the van done well?

Speaker 1

Actually, as the podcast was starting, I was getting a call from our mechanic, randy, and we dropped it off today for an oil change, but the van did amazing. We have a new mechanic, randy, and he's great, and he says it's in great shape. Randy and he's great and he says it's in great shape. Oh good, we don't have a passenger seat and all of our backs hurt from sitting in the benches, but other than that, it's in good shape.

Speaker 4

Yeah, holding up. Very well, mechanic Randy, is that his name? Yeah, he traded like merch for a van checkup which is really cool.

Speaker 1

Yeah, he was like it'll be $100 unless you have t-shirts and I'll trade you t-shirts, really, yeah.

Speaker 4

Wow, so shout out, randy. Thanks, randy.

Speaker 5

That is awesome. So no passenger seats. So do you guys stack gear there or what do you do?

Speaker 4

Yeah, we have a van box that lives there. That's kind of just snacks and jackets and other junk that we gathered during tour.

Speaker 1

This is actually a source of contention with our bassist, Aiden.

Speaker 4

Yeah, but like we stay at a lot of family and friends places and they always send us with snacks and they end up in the van box, they do.

Speaker 1

And then we're like going through it a few weeks later and we find like the brownies that somebody sent us with weeks before, or like old oranges.

Speaker 3

Yeah, oh yeah.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 3

Wow, wow, yeah, that is the life of living in a van. So this first leg of the tour, you're going to places I believe that you've been to before, as compared to the second leg.

Speaker 3

You're going to places I believe that you've been to before. As compared to the second leg you talked about, you know a sense of community with a larger group of people and I saw on some social media you sold out. You know, at least I saw one show or something. What is that like to be able to say that you sold something out Because you talked about being a headliner is so much different. You know what is that feeling for you.

Speaker 4

I mean it was such a great feeling. We were all so happy to figure out it was sold out, and that really doesn't happen to us a lot at the stage we are at as a band, and so just having shows that sold well and the fact that people came, to see our music was just so great and so kind of them for coming. And yeah, that was Chicago that we posted about selling out and that was a really great show.

Speaker 1

That was really fun and also, like a lot of the shows I mean all the other shows so far haven't sold out technically, but even if there's only like 30 or 40 people there. Like, we played Toronto and there were maybe 40 people there but they were all so excited about the music and we were all so excited that they were there in Toronto because we were shocked anyone was gonna come to that show, you know. So I feel like people that come, even if it's a small show, they're like excited to have an intimate experience. And then we're excited because we're in Vermont or somewhere crazy and people are actually deciding to come. So even when there aren't a lot of people there, the fact that they're there for us and just there to listen is really cool and we're very grateful for that.

Speaker 5

Do you find that there are people that know the lyrics, that are singing along, and that's got to be a great feeling. Huh, it's so cool.

Speaker 1

And sometimes there will be like 20 people in the crowd, but one person is like singing every word and it's so cool, it's awesome.

Speaker 5

Amazing, are you guys selling a lot of merch?

Speaker 1

Yeah, yeah, that's something that's interesting.

Speaker 3

They're trading it, jimmy, they have a van down by the river, but it runs really well.

Speaker 5

They trade it all for oranges and brownies.

Speaker 1

Oh, yeah, yeah, it's actually weird. We open rooms with so many more people, but when it's our headline show, people really want to support and sometimes we sell the same amount of merch as if we're playing like a 500 cap room, but with people that didn't come to see us, as if we're playing like a 50 person crowd, but everyone everyone's wants the merch, is and is excited and has been waiting for it, so that's been really cool and it's a cool chance to like we hang it at the merch table and we talk to fans and like get to meet them.

Speaker 4

And it's just a really cool part of the night on our headline tour to to be able to talk to fans and like get to meet them. And it's just a really cool part of the night on our headline tour to be able to talk to people and that they come out and want to support us and like come home with a shirt and stuff. Yeah.

Speaker 4

Yeah, and the next time you come to town maybe they bring a friend right, I know, and it's sweet too to like look into the audience and see people wearing a shirt or something from the last time we played um that city, and so it's like a cool way to like look in the audience and think, oh, they're here for us and they were last and they were last time.

Speaker 1

Jade designed a great new shirt, um the staring at the sun shirt, and it's been selling really well.

Speaker 3

It's been our best seller all right, I need one so yeah they're in the album cover or is it something different?

Speaker 4

It's just like some doodles and stuff kind of about the album I guess, and just like to promote it in the tour. But it's on a really good quality shirt.

Speaker 5

Oh, it's a really nice shirt that makes a big difference it does.

Speaker 1

It makes a design.

Speaker 3

nice shirt it does speak, it really does. Because I remember going to shows and you, you get a shirt and you're excited and it's the cheapest quality, and you wash it the first time and then like the dude's face is halfway around on your side and totally or it's a really weird cut like okay, who does this fit?

Speaker 4

yeah our um, our tour manager on this last run works at a merch fulfillment place and was telling me that the smaller indie bands because they sell, merch for huge artists and merch for smaller artists, and that the smaller artists have better merch because they are the ones making the decisions about the shirts and sweatshirts and that they care more because when you're huge, I guess you're not the one making those decisions. So, indie artists have better merch.

Speaker 3

And I thought Mick Jagger was picking out those sweatshirts for sale when the.

Speaker 4

Rolling Stones were in town. He was feeling the samples.

Speaker 3

Well, you know what? Why don't we speaking of promoting? Why don't we, you know, speaking of promoting? Why don't we have you guys play a song, and after the song we'll get in to talk a little bit more, maybe even play another one, because I'm sure our listeners out there would love to hear it.

Speaker 4

Hell, yeah. Well, we can play a song from our new record oh, we're going to do that one.

Speaker 1

Yeah, I mean we're talking about it Awesome.

Speaker 2

I love to do that one. Yeah, I mean, we're talking about it. We might awesome. I love the new record, by the way. Thank you, um. This one's called margo hello reverb. I had a lot of you.

Speaker 2

She didn't know how to live it, dancing around the house while they cook in the kitchen, playing in the yard with the rock she was kicking. Made a couple friends, but they said she was different. Cut off all her hair cause she wanted to blend in. Mixing up a bottle of the worst intentions, threw it at the wall. Didn't like her invention. Would've done it all just to catch their attention. Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh.

Speaker 2

Had a lot of love. She didn't know how to give it. Gave it all away to those who didn't deserve it. Picking up the pieces, didn't know how to mend it. Buried in a backyard with a white picket fence, it grew into a garden. Didn't know how to tend it. Had a couple kids. Now they're all independent. Had a lot to say, but they never would listen. Watch her make her mistakes over again. I'm sorry. Had a lot of love. She didn't know how to spend it. Gave it all away to those who didn't deserve it. Picking up the pieces, didn't know how to mend it. Buried in her backyard with a white picket fence, it grew into a garden. Didn't know how to tend it. Had a couple kids now they're all independent had a lot to say, but they never would listen. Watch her make her mistakes. Over again. She grew into a garden.

Speaker 3

That was awesome. I love that song I do. Last time we spoke I said that was my favorite song from the album it is just really super cool.

Speaker 3

So another super cool thing is I was playing some of your music the other day and you know, just to get ready, you know I knew you were coming on the show and my youngest daughter, she's 23,. She's like is that new? Like, is that new? Oh, my, yeah, it's the latest album. She goes, how do you know it? And I'm like, oh, they've been on the show and it was just funny that she knew who you guys were really yeah, she's like oh, I know those songs and I'm not even sure she's like I know them, you know

Band Dynamics and Touring Excitement

Speaker 3

but, I, think that's cool. You know how small the world is and sometimes you don't realize how small it really can be. Um, speaking of small, I know that you know we spoke to both of you before we have you both here. Why don't you talk a little bit about the rest of your band? Because I know we I kind of leave them out. You know we wanted to have like a little acoustic thing, but I don't want them to be forgotten at all and tell us you know who's in the band, what instruments they play and you know how long they've been with you.

Speaker 1

Yeah, yeah, we've got Aaron Daugherty. He's been with us for over three years. He's also my boyfriend and he plays guitar and synth, and he plays guitar and synth and he actually all of the boys these days have been singing with us, which has been really fun. So we got five mics on stage now, which is awesome, um are you all five singing it sometimes?

Speaker 1

yeah, uh, and that's been kind of new on this tour too, um, but yeah, he's sort of, he's like the guy that knows things about fixing the van and backing the trailer in and that kind of thing, um, and he's also the like computer scientist of the group, um, and is always on his computer.

Speaker 1

I don't know um and then we've got gideon, who is our resident goofball, I'd say, and he plays the drums and also sings with us now, which is a hard thing to do the drums and singing at the same time I could not do that, honestly. Same thing with bass rhythmically, that's tough, um, and he's been with us pretty much as long as Aaron, so like three and a half years, um. And then we've got Aiden, who's our bassist. He's the guy who likes to keep the van clean, um, he's also they're all our resident goofballs, really Um, and he's been only with us for a little bit over a year, so he joined in June of 2023. So, yeah, about a year and a half Um, and that's been a really great addition to our great addition to our group. The four of us played together for a long time, but it's been really cool to have Aiden with us and it feels like he's been with us just as long as the other boys have Totally.

Speaker 4

It's like the missing puzzle piece.

Speaker 1

they're all very special to us and they're all like our family and we're really grateful for them, because it's just quite the sacrifice to take a month or two months of your life and leave all your family and friends behind and play music with us too and go to all these different cities. And they load the van and trailer every night while we're at merch talking to people, and they just do so much behind the scenes that makes it possible for us to tour and it's very selfless and kind.

Speaker 3

Oh, that's pretty awesome.

Speaker 5

Yeah, one thing that my friends have noticed about bands is, if you're not, like you said, the Rolling Stones or something like that, you're clearing your own equipment You're doing your own guitar tech. You're doing everything and stuff. So having some guys that are packing up and loading the van while you're doing merch, that's nice too.

Speaker 1

It's very nice. We try to load when we can, but a lot of times we'll get out there and they're done with it already and it's some heavy stuff, like a lot of heavy stuff to lift. We keep getting more and more gear, so hopefully we'll get more people to lift it too.

Speaker 5

So do you do that? You go to a town and you go to the music store and end up buying stuff? Oh for sure.

Speaker 1

Not full guitars, normally right, we haven't done that yet.

Speaker 4

Aaron got a guitar on tour. He did, and an amp. Yeah, we always joke that like places on tour that we just like can't live without. It's true, we've spent so much money at those two stores it just increases our dopamine to be there we just if we're having a rough day, we gotta stop at guitar center, just to look around

Speaker 5

and some people go to starbucks.

Speaker 1

You go to guitar center oh, we used to be on like a big starbucks kick because of me, um, and I stopped asking and I think we went to like zero on this tour, so I realized I was the problem yeah so how much longer is the tour?

Speaker 4

another month. Yeah, yeah, we leave on wednesday and I think we get back november 1st and then our last show, um, we have a little break until November 14th, which is our Georgia Theater show.

Speaker 5

Oh yeah, Great. I hope I can be there for that.

Speaker 4

That would be so fun yeah.

Speaker 1

Is Lily going to be back in town? I guess it's close to Thanksgiving, but it's not quite Thanksgiving.

Speaker 5

I don't think she will be back by then, yeah.

Speaker 1

Yeah, I guess she's coming right now. What was the occasion of her being here?

Speaker 5

She now? What was the occasion of her being here?

Speaker 1

she hadn't been to atlanta in a long time. So the for those of you out there.

Speaker 5

Uh, my daughter lily, and jess and jade are good friends, so yeah, lily's in town for like 10 days, which is the longest she's been able to because she's able to work from home so that's great we're excited that's sweet so on this part of the tour, you're going to cities that you really haven't been to before, maybe some of them oh yeah what's?

Speaker 3

do you have any anxiety or what are your thoughts about? You know, hitting all these different parts, uh, starting in texas but then ending up. You know going to the west coast and then swinging back here, like you said for the, for the Georgia Theater. What are your feelings on that?

Speaker 4

Yeah, I think there's only three states cities that we've been to already on this next tour.

Speaker 1

Oh, my gosh. Yeah, that's crazy.

Tour Safety and Band Compliments

Speaker 4

So a lot of unknowns out there. But I think we're all just really excited because it's been a while since we've played new places and seen new states. We've been touring on the east coast for like three years, um, and so we're just really excited to go out west. Um, and honestly, um, even though there will probably be less people there, it's kind of like our very first shows on the east coast. There was like nobody. So I feel like it's just kind of a rite of passage and that if people do come, it's more just like oh my gosh, there's people here, and the fact that we're just playing a new city is like enough, and so anything else on top of that is just even better. Um, and yeah, I think we're playing california for the first time too, and some of those shows are already selling well, which is really exciting. Um, and, yeah, I think we're a little nervous, maybe just for, I don't know, the van getting broken into out there.

Speaker 1

But I have nightmares, yeah.

Speaker 5

What do you do to guard against that?

Speaker 1

Oh, I'll tell you, um, you can get insurance. So we're we're making sure our insurance is up to date. We've got some insurance, um, and you can do like a trailer lock on the hitch, which we haven't done.

Speaker 1

but jade and I went out west on a little road trip once and our car got broken into twice in one day out of san francisco yeah and so, and then we just toured with this other band, the hails, who told us that they were literally loading out of their van and some car drove by and took a ton of stuff from their van while they were in the middle of loading out, like from the side door.

Speaker 3

So we're just a little nervous about that wait a minute, broken into twice in the same day yeah, this is a crazy story.

Speaker 4

it's crazy, um, it was. We were in san francisco at the golden gate bridge park and there was a lot of families around. We thought it was really safe and so we just went skateboarding for a little bit and then came back and our window was broken and our friend's backpack was gone, with like all of her laptop stuff Her hard, drive Hard drive and so luckily because it happens a lot in San Francisco they like have people come to your van and fix your window like right away, it's like a business call Now.

Speaker 3

that's a problem.

Speaker 4

It happens a lot.

Speaker 1

We just have people waiting to come fix it.

Speaker 3

What if that's the person?

Speaker 1

You're right. True, they've been on call.

Speaker 5

It's a great business model.

Speaker 4

It's like you need help? Yeah, but we got it fixed within like an hour and then we were like, okay, let's just.

Speaker 1

We were going to go to.

Speaker 4

Santa Cruz we were going to go to. Oh, where was it? What's it called? Big Sur, Big Sur.

Speaker 1

Big Sur yes.

Speaker 4

And we were like, let's just get out of San Francisco. So halfway to Big Sur we stop at a Walmart to get food for the night and then we come back and our window is shattered again in the Walmart parking lot.

Speaker 5

Was it a different window?

Speaker 4

Yeah. Yes, it was a different window, but they didn't steal anything the second time.

Speaker 1

Well, it's just like it was shattered entirely, but it hadn't fallen in yet, and so then we had the fun little challenge of the rest of the night while we were driving, like trying to keep the glass from falling on us.

Speaker 5

Oh, the person didn't come right out and fix it again.

Speaker 1

No, we were too far. It actually took the whole day the next day to fix it. So we had had a great first time experience, but then we waited all day and we never saw a big sir.

Speaker 3

No, I had a 71 Buick Skylark and it was an old car not my first car, but one of my first cars and I worked in Queens, new York, and there was an area where people were breaking into cars.

Speaker 3

So I just decided one day I just let the windows, I let them be down, roll them down and just keep them down and I really believe that people are like oh, the windows are down, there can't be anything in here, and they break into cars next to me because their windows were up, thinking there must be something in here that's so smart.

Speaker 4

I think like, yeah, just putting everything that we can in the trailer or taking our bags with us is probably like the best thing we can do, because I think it's less likely that they break into the trailer and also yeah, that's more of an operation. Yeah, a tip I've heard is to like back into a spot so that they physically can't get the door open to a trailer which seems like and we've already heard that you have a member that's really good at backing trailers yes yeah, that's yeah.

Speaker 1

I mean, I guess, yeah, I guess it's a lot of people like, even when melanie's car got broken into, it was like we had guitars in that car, we had like All of our backpacks. But they just do the quick, shatter the window, grab one thing that they see and then run away in broad daylight. So I guess if we can keep it all in the trailer, it's harder, yeah.

Speaker 5

Anything visible, like even in my neighborhood here in Atlanta. It's like if there's a backpack visible in your car, you're probably going to get broken into.

Speaker 3

Or a Space Giant CD just laying there. They were going to break in.

Speaker 5

They have rummaged through my car multiple times and never taken the Space Giants CD. I'm offended. They were not ready to go. No, they were not. And I thought that they stole my tweezers and I'm like, why would you steal my tweezers? But it turned out that my tweezers had just slid into a pair of reading glasses.

Speaker 1

Oh, my God man, mystery solved. I don't know If I'm breaking into your car and I need a new pair of tweezers. Might as well just pocket them.

Speaker 5

I know I'm not even sure what to say. They're like 15 bucks these days.

Speaker 3

I don't even know what to say to that. I don't.

Speaker 5

No, seriously, though, the new album I will listen to it the day it came out and it's got such a great variety on it. I love the direction you guys have grown in and the different styles. You guys incorporate a pretty good bit of noise what I would call noise rock into some of your songs and that's really cool.

Speaker 1

Thank you, that's cool, that's a good compliment, thank you.

Speaker 5

I appreciate that you guys want to play another one.

Speaker 4

Yeah, this one is from our last EP called Enjoy your Stay, and the song's called I Like you Around.

Speaker 2

Take it easy on me now, cause I'm gonna die young 27 club and I like you, who run in the light inside your eyes. It's the only thing I like. So don't run away again, cause something like this is so hard to find, ooh. So take it easy on me now, cause I like you around. Ooh, there's nothing else to think about. We have it figured out. Ooh, I guess you caught me at the right time, cause I was hanging on To something too far gone and I wish that we could rewind, cause you knew all along that what you did was wrong. But don't run away again, cause something like this is so hard to find. So take it easy on me now, cause I like you around. There's nothing else to think about. We have it figured out. Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh. We are now at Upper Session Road.

Speaker 2

I want to hold you through July. I want to hold you for the rest of my life. I want to know you in five years time. I want to know you for the rest of my La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la La la la la La la la la La la la la.

Speaker 1

Thank you Awesome, we couldn't decide if we should do the last part or not.

Speaker 3

Is that why you looked at each other?

Speaker 1

Yeah, Like I couldn't tell if you were like nodding that we should stop or nodding that we should keep going. I didn't care either way.

Speaker 5

I'm glad we did it. I love the last part.

Speaker 4

Thank you Both those glad we did it. I love the last part, thank you.

Speaker 3

Both those songs sounded really good and you know, in this small studio for us, you know it's difficult enough for Jimmy to get me to sound good but then to be able to get you know the both of you.

Speaker 5

It takes no effort to get them to sound good, but, Jim, I mean come on, I've got him running through all kinds of filters? No, I don't.

Speaker 4

Well, thank you.

Speaker 3

Yeah, we really appreciate you coming out and I think that the listeners are really going to enjoy being able to hear what you're all about and I think it'll be good. It'll be good for the listeners, it'll be good for you guys, it'll be good for Jimmy and I and good It'll be good for the listeners.

Speaker 4

It'll be good for you guys, it'll be good for Jimmy and I, and everybody's a winner, everybody's a winner. We'd really appreciate you guys having us out and talking to us.

Speaker 5

Yeah, thanks so much for coming and good luck on the tour. I mean, I know it's going great already, so just keep it rolling.

Speaker 2

Keep chugging along. We can't wait.

Speaker 3

I'm going to try and come out to the Birmingham show. Oh, exciting. So I wanted to see you guys come in Atlanta. But what was funny, I went to Athens and I saw Driving and Crying that night.

Speaker 5
