Hello and welcome to episode number one of the Serve First, sell Later Marketing podcast, designed specifically for legal and financial professionals who are looking to enhance their visibility and consistently grow their practice. I'm your host, sylvie Garibaldi, and I'm thrilled to have you join us today. So this podcast was born out of a clear need that I had identified while working with numerous professionals in both the legal and financial sectors over many years, and what I noticed is that many of you are not as visible as you could be, both online and in-person, and I'm really passionate about helping bridge this important gap. So being visible isn't just about self-promotion. It's about ensuring that those who can benefit from your skills and knowledge can easily find you, and so, as the saying goes, if you're not visible as a professional, you can't be found, and if you can't be found, you can't help those people or businesses that are in most need of your services.
02:31

And I get that, and that's why I'm going to discuss ways to help you market yourself and your services so that it feels authentic and genuine. So this podcast will provide you with both tried and tested marketing that high earning legal and financial professionals use today in their practices, and so I'm going to share simple and actionable strategies on how to build visibility, how to attract your ideal target market, how to build your thought leadership, how to get noticed, and how to create a profitable practice that can provide you with the financial and time freedom that you so deserve. All right.
04:26
So in today's episode, I want to provide simple strategies to become visible online in really the most effective and quickest way how to avoid marketing confusion with the hundreds or should I say probably thousands of strategies out there. How to become comfortable promoting your services and how to really ensure that, as a business owner, you get an ROI from your marketing. So in today's digital age, having a strong online presence is really a non-negotiable, and for those of you who have been following me or listening to me for a while, you will know that being present online in today's day and age, as a professional, is really a non-negotiable. So think about it when you need to find a service or product, where's the first place you look? For most of us, it's online, and the same goes for your potential clients. They're searching for you online. They're online searching for the services that you offer. So if you're not visible online, you're missing out on a huge opportunity to connect with these potential clients and grow your practice.
05:36
Now, when we talk about online visibility, I'm not just talking about having a website. Yes, a professional website is important for your online presence, but it's just one piece of the puzzle, and so your website is like your online office, and it's where potential clients can learn more about you, your services, how you can help them. But just like your physical office, if no one knows it's there, no one's going to visit. So that's where online marketing comes in. Online marketing is all about increasing your visibility. It's about making sure that when potential clients are searching for your services, they will actually find you. Okay, I hope that's resonating with you.
06:19
So there are several ways to increase your online visibility. So one of the ones that we like to talk about is and is probably a no brainer is social media, and it is a powerful tool for increasing your online visibility. So platforms like LinkedIn, facebook, instagram and so many others. They really allow you to connect with potential clients. It allows you to share valuable content and establish yourself as an expert or thought leader in your space and, the best part, it's free to use. So online networking platforms like professional associations and online forums they're also a great way to increase your visibility, and so you know which of these online or in-person professional associations and online forums that pertain to you, and so these platforms allow you to connect with other professionals in your field, share some insights and learn from each other. Plus, they offer directories where potential clients can find you. So that's super important.
07:26
Let's not forget about SEO. Seo is all about optimizing your website and online content to rank higher in search engine results, and the higher you rank, the more visible you are to your potential clients. Now I know what you're thinking. This all sounds great, but it also sounds like a lot of work, and you're right it is. But remember online visibility is not a one time thing. It's a continuous process. It's about consistently showing up, sharing valuable content and engaging with your audience, and the more you do it, the more visible you become. So I encourage you to take a closer look at your online visibility and ask yourself honestly are you being visible enough? Are you being visible where your potential clients are? Are you showing up consistently and that is a big one Are you providing enough value? If not, it's really time to step up your online game. One of the things I always like to tell our clients is you know, when you're looking at social media platforms, only focus on the ones where your ideal target market hangs out and forget about all the other ones. Just keep it simple.
08:36
Now let's move on to creating valuable content, because that's a really important component or piece of this puzzle. So, firstly, valuable content is not just about sharing information or any kind of information, because the reality is, you can Google, search anything and find all kinds of information, and your clients, your potential clients, can too. So where we make the difference here, or where I want to make a distinguishing opportunity, is that it's all about understanding your audience's needs and providing solutions to their problems. It's about engaging them, educating them and, ultimately, building a relationship with them. So how do you create content that provides value? That's a really important question. We get asked a lot, and you know we do a lot of done-for-you services for our clients. So I want to share with you some of the key questions that you can ask yourself if you want to write your own social media content, and these are some important questions to think about. Number one is who is your audience? Alright, you may want to write these down, by the way. So who is your audience?
09:47
Understanding your audience is the first step in creating valuable content. You need to know their needs, their challenges, their interests, and this will help you create content that actually resonates with them. So let's take an example. If you are a family mediator, creating valuable content for your audience is essential to provide guidance and support during challenging family disputes. So if we were to take that information and say, okay, well, what are some of the challenges that a family mediator experiences and what kind of content could they write about? And so you know it could address common challenges such as co-parenting conflicts, property division, child custody issues. So the important question to ask yourself is what are the most prevalent challenges that your audience is encountering and encounters on a regular basis when they're faced with this problem or challenge that you can solve? For the second question you want to ask yourself is what do they want from me? What does my ideal prospect want from me? Once you know who your audience is, you need to understand what they expect from you. What kind of content do they need? What problems are they facing that you can help solve? And this will guide your content creation process.
11:06
Okay, so let's keep with the example of the family mediator. So, as a family mediator, you could create a series of educational videos that address common challenges faced by families in conflicts, such as child custody, visitation schedules, property division during divorce, etc. So these videos can provide practical guidance and solutions to the problems families encounter, and that's super important because you want it to be really zeroed in on what is going to make the difference, and so the key question here once again is what specific challenges are your audience facing, okay, and what is the content that you can provide that will act as practical guidance and solutions that address those challenges? So, as I said, our audience they don't need more information. They need more targeted solutions to their problems. So when they're actually online searching through Google searches, they're going to find sometimes they'll find generalized information, sometimes they'll find specific information, but they really got to search for it, and so, as a professional, it's up to you to make the language their language and to make sure that their challenges are what your content speaks to. I hope that's resonating with you.
12:31
All right, the next question you want to ask yourself is what are your competitors talking about? So understanding what your competitors are discussing can give you huge insights into what your audience might be interested in. So it can also help you identify gaps in the market that you can fill with your content. So the key question here is how can I best leverage the insights gained from competitor content to develop unique and valuable resources that address the specific needs of my target audience. And you can do this by once again sharing practical techniques, sharing real life case studies, offering guidance on the emotional aspects of the profession that you're in, and so think about how you can actually do this. And don't forget like, so you've got your competitors and you've got different associations that represent what you do. Those are great places to find out what they're talking about, to get some ideas and, lastly, what does your company want to accomplish?
13:35
Okay, so think about that. Your content should align with your goals, whether it's increasing brand awareness, generating leads or educating prospects. It's super important to think about that. So I think, to add to that, I would also say what makes your content unique? And think about what makes your content unique that your competitors aren't offering, and this could be your own unique perspective or in-depth analysis to a common problem. So maybe you look at some key problems that your clients bring to you and say, hey, what is it that I'm offering here and how I'm offering it, which could be your process. That could be something you could talk about as well. That could be unique to you. I hope that's resonating.
14:18
So, remember, in today's digital age, being visible online is not just about being seen, it's about being found. What's important is that you're found, being remembered and being chosen, and so that is really the power of online visibility. And just remember, creating valuable content is not a one-time task. It's an ongoing process that requires constant valuation and adjustment. So keep asking these questions, keep learning about your audience and keep striving to provide them with the value that they seek.
14:48
Another key area I want to talk about is really that it's completely normal to feel overwhelmed, especially when there are so many strategies and tactics out there for marketing, and making it hard to know where to start. But remember, every expert was once a beginner, and so the key here is to commit to a specific strategy, take on challenges head on and learn from those experiences, and over time, you're going to find what works best for you and for your practice. So let's explore how to simplify marketing, to break it down into manageable chunks, focusing on one strategy at a time, and here are some simple tips to streamline your marketing efforts. You know, the first thing is you need to really prioritize what's important. Start by prioritizing that and forget about the rest, at least for now. Okay, so you know.
15:38
One quick tip on how to do this is to create a digital marketing calendar to organize your efforts and keeping it really really simple. So start with social media marketing. That's an easy place to start. Focus on the efforts that you're going to put into your social media and really ensure that you have social media profiles that have consistent information and that's going to be important along with posting consistently and on a regular basis. So you want to create a regular presence here and the key takeaway is if you're not posting consistently whether it's a content post, whether it's a video, whether it's your podcast, whatever it may be consistency is key, and if there is no consistency, then it's going to be really hard to build momentum. So that's a real big takeaway.
16:30
The other thing to look at when you're breaking this down to make it simple as possible, is when you're looking at your social media or you're going to be delivering a talk to a group of, to an audience that's part of your ideal target market. When you're creating content, when you're creating presentations, focus on writing to the point, start with a clear headline, hook your audience in with the benefit and focus on the solution that you offer, and what's really key here is avoid any industry jargon, convey your message in plain and simple language and make it impactful. I always say that if you know someone talks about a topic and I'm really struggling to understand, I always ask myself what could the speaker have done to put it in more simpler terms? Because if I'm not understanding it, chances are many others aren't understanding it as well, so keep that in mind. So, really, by focusing on these tips and breaking down your marketing efforts into manageable chunks, you can simplify your approach and really create content that resonates with your audience while aligning with your business goals. So marketing is really about connecting with your potential clients and understanding their needs. Keeping it really simple is what I like to say.
17:49
Okay, I want to shift gears now and address the elephant in the room and this is something that I've seen consistently among legal and financial professionals and that's the fear of self promotion. And this fear can have a significant impact on your practice, hindering your ability to effectively market your services and really build stronger client relationships. And this can show up in a myriad of ways. For example, if you feel really uncomfortable when having to post on social media or maybe recording a video, perhaps it's delivering a talk or a webinar to an audience, maybe it's asking for referrals. Whatever it may be. In this regard, there is a good chance that you fear self promotion, and that's quite normal. But what's not normal is when you continue to feel this fear consistently throughout the years of your practice. That's when it can cause havoc, and that's why I want to address this. So overcoming this fear is really critical to your success and if it's not dealt with, as I mentioned, it'll stagnate. It can keep you stuck. It can do all kinds of things to the outcome or the longevity of your practice.
19:10
So I want to talk about how do you overcome the fear of self promotion and what's the best way to do that. So here are some key tips to think about this. The very first one is to shift your focus. So what do I mean by that? Instead of focusing on selling your service, shift your focus to how your service can genuinely help people or businesses who need it. So by emphasizing the value you provide and how it can benefit others, you create a space of empathy where potential clients feel seen and cared for. So this is really not about talking about yourself, talking about your achievements. This is about talking about what you believe in and how you can help others. This is about being the authentic you, so be bold enough to be passionate about what you believe in and don't be afraid to share a little vulnerability. And I always say if people can't hear from you, see from you or learn from you, then they can never buy from you. Another quick tip here is providing valuable content, so focusing on creating valuable and relevant content for your target audience. By offering them what they want, you actually shift from selling to serving your clients, and so this approach can help you feel more at ease with being visible and promoting your work.
20:36
Another great way to address this is to focus on your why, focus on your why. So revisit your mission and the reasons behind your work, remind yourself of the problems that you aim to solve and the community that you're passionate about reaching, and so keeping your purpose in mind can help you feel more confident and motivated to be visible. Here's a great exercise that I always encourage our clients to do, and that is to think about go back to some client cases and think about which were the ones that you had some really great outcomes for. How did you serve them. How did it feel when the outcome was exactly or more than what they anticipated? So think about that. Write these client success stories out, revisit them. Use this as your anchor to believe in your service and to really shine light on the work that you do, because it's helping people or businesses in a way that they were unable to solve before they met you. Okay, so, super, super important.
21:44
Another great tip here is to enlist, you know, supporters or referral partners. So really look at individuals who believe in your work and can advocate for you. So these are supporters and referral partners. What they can do is they can actually help amplify your message and expand your reach. So please don't forget about them. Building a relationship with them is super important and can make self promotion feel less daunting and more collaborative. So if you're working with referral partners, you're really starting to exercise that muscle of self promotion by them agreeing to promote your work, and so you know you're feeling good about being able to really get out there and share your message with the world. And you know, recognize that most people won't judge you as harshly as you might think. Overanalyzing and fearing judgment can hold you back and remember that people are generally not dwelling on your self promotion as much as you might think. They're not really focused on you. They're focused on how you can help them overcome their biggest problems.
22:46
All right, so here's an important question I want to ask you Are you investing in marketing for your professional practice? Marketing is really a long term investment that can yield significant returns, and, with all the technology and resources available, you can really see how your marketing spend is performing. So it's not like a pie in the sky, guess, is my marketing working or not? So so your marketing budget and I want to touch on this for a moment, because some of you may believe that it's hard to tell if you're getting an ROI or return on investment on your marketing efforts and so your marketing budget should always include initiatives that you've had success with, right. A portion of your budget should always focus on that. So so here's a tip Set aside funding for proven strategies and allocate a portion for testing new approaches.
23:34
The testing of new approaches that's where you know it might be a little dicey Is it going to work or not? So, for example, you might decide to invest in ads to see how they could perform for you. So, by setting aside a portion of your budget for testing, you can identify the most effective marketing channels and optimize your spending, you know, for a maximum ROI. So knowing your sales cycles will help you anticipate strategies that you need to invest in, which will help you budget for your marketing plan really wisely. By understanding how marketing efforts actually contribute to revenue growth, you can justify marketing spending and budget allocation for both ongoing and future campaigns and initiatives.
24:20
So the key point here is with return on marketing investment, you can measure how well your marketing channels pay off and guide your strategies to maximize your ROI. So remember, marketing is more than just advertising and promotion. It's about connecting with your clients and driving business growth. So there's a little bit of a mindset shift here about how you look at your ROI and what you think of it. So by setting clear and measurable goals, developing a strategic budget and really continuously measuring and adjusting your marketing, you can improve your marketing ROI and really see tangible results from your efforts.
25:00
So an important point to consider is if you're not engaging and investing in your marketing, your competitors will, and they will get their voices heard and noticed. So think about that. By investing in marketing, you're not only promoting your brand, but you're also building a lasting connection with your audience, no matter how big or small your marketing spend or efforts are, whether your marketing efforts cost you zero dollars or they cost you something in terms of financial. Just look at it as how can I create a lasting connection with my audience? And it is possible to do it through free means, meaning doing your own social media, maybe delivering a webinar or engaging in marketing programs, training to help you get to where you want to go. So the end goal is always to foster meaningful interactions and help you stay at the top of your customers' minds.
26:05
So, as we wrap up, remember to be visible online by using some of the strategies discussed in this episode. Use the step-by-step process to simplify your marketing and avoid confusion over the various strategies out there, because there are so many out there. And, lastly, learn to become more comfortable with promoting your services and ensure that you're getting that ROI from your marketing investment, dollars and efforts. So I hope you've enjoyed today's episode. Please don't forget to subscribe to the podcast and share it with your network. Please connect with me on LinkedIn. Thanks for joining me and until next time. Always remember there's no better time to start than today.
