#96 - How to Turn Your Purpose Into Profits

Deborah C. Smith Season 1 Episode 96

In this solo episode, I’m sharing the exact framework I use with my coaching clients to help them turn their soul-driven mission into real, sustainable income. You’ll hear the story of my client Chloe, a wellness coach who went from burnt out and scattered to booking over $10K in sales in just a few weeks without any complicated funnels.

We break down the 3 essential layers of profitable purpose:
→ Your Spark (your story + passion)
→ The Struggle (a clear problem you solve)
→ The System (your repeatable, teachable framework)

If you’ve been spinning in the messy middle or working hard but not seeing the results, you’re going to love this one. Plus, I’ll tell you how to get early access to my upcoming From Purpose to Profit video training, where I walk you through this process step by step.

Hey, hey there, rockstar. I'm gonna start this episode off by telling you a quick story about my client, Chloe. So, Chloe is a wellness coach, but I actually knew her from way back in the day when before when she still worked at her corporate job. And I had a pop-up juice bar that I was running that I owned that was inside her office building.

So we were casual acquaintances that way, but Chloe actually left. That very intense business environment to pursue her own passion of helping New Yorkers feel better in their daily lives. So when we reconnected, she had been in business as a holistic health coach, um, four years, and she was kind of hustling to try and get the business off the ground still.

And she had tried all the standard things, posting daily on social media, giving a lot of free advice away. Right. Launching new programs every quarter, like coming up with new themes and new different parameters for the programming, um, but barely making enough money to really justify staying in business.

And she was really frustrated, and I see this all the time. This is a huge issue with people, especially in the wellness industry. Coaches who are mission driven, who are heart led, who are, who care deeply about others and have a purpose, but don't have a clear marketing plan. Guys, this is the core of what I do with my clients.

This is the core of what has worked for me to go from struggling to get clients to really understanding how I can connect with people simply and create. A program with them, create a client and help them get a win. So I shared this concept with her, uh, of these three essential layers. I'm gonna tell you what Chloe did to go from scattered and honestly struggling to get clients to making almost 15 KA month in about three or four months time.

In fact, what I'm gonna break down in this episode are the three things that you need to turn any purpose into a profit, and it will work for any dream and any mission, any purpose. So let's get right into it. Hey there, and welcome to the Mindset To Market Podcast, your go-to place for practical tools and solutions for the everyday challenges of being a creative and spiritual solopreneur living in a material world.

I'm your host. Deborah Smith. I'm a holistic business coach with 17 years of experience, and I help my clients bust through mindset blocks and build a daily practice that prioritizes your business's financial growth as well as your personal health and wellness. I'm here to offer you support, creativity, mindset, practical how-tos, and getting into imperfect messy actions so you can find balance while building the dream.

Business. If you're a purpose-driven solepreneur, who's working on that dream one day at a time, then you're in the right place. Let's dive in. Alright, my dear, thank you for being here. As always, it's a pleasure to connect with you. I hope your week is off to a great. Start, and I hope you're thriving. Uh, in this episode, I'm sharing the three layers of how to turn your purpose into a profitable business model.

And let's get right back to Chloe where we left off. So. What we did together was we identified that her purpose was kind of vague and fuzzy, right? Because holistic health coaching, I mean, wanting to help people feel better, that's lovely, but it's very, very vague. So it wasn't clear how she was gonna help people.

It wasn't clear who exactly she was gonna help, and it wasn't even clear exactly, you know, what she would actually do to help them. She was sort of all over the place trying things still, and I spotted that right away because guess what been there? So I was like, Hmm, you're kind of trying to please everybody with a billion different modalities.

One day you're talking about gut health, the next day you're talking about fitness plans and meal plans, and. While all of those things are important because they're all part of helping people ultimately feel better, right? If people are eating healthy, if they're getting balanced nutrition, they're gonna feel better.

If they're exercising and releasing endorphins, they're gonna feel better. But in order for you to run a business. People need to be able to identify exactly how you will help them solve a specific problem. So we got radically clear on the purpose. Right? And she really drilled down on this and it was really, I think where the, she turned to the corner.

Her real mission wasn't just helping people quote, feel better. Right? That's very, very vague. It was helping. High achieving women specifically, that's who she identified she wanted to target and focus on because she, she had worked with them, she knew them. She had lived their real reality. She knew how stressful things were in their work environment.

So she realized that she wanted to help high achieving women specifically to heal their nervous systems so that they could finally feel safe stepping into and owning their success. I mean, what a major shift from. To wanting to help New Yorkers feel better to wanting to help high achieving women heal their nervous system so they can feel safe and step into their success, receive the money, receive the notoriety, become more visible, all of that.

So feel better, but in the way of like really profoundly arriving in their lives. Um, that clarity is what changed everything for her. And I want to reiterate how important it is that we get very specific about. Who we help and how we help, because especially with disciplines like health coaching or anything where the outcome is intangible, it's so important that we clear that up by naming the specific person that we help, by naming the specific problem that we solve, showing them that we see that specific problem and that we understand it, and then also showing a specific process that we can walk them through to get over that struggle and to have a win.

So Chloe simplified her message by a lot, making it so clear who she was for and what she was gonna do. And then she built a single offer around that clarity. So it was a big shift from away from everything she else. She had been trying, she had to clear up some of her online clutter, right? Because she had all these programs and all these like vague things out there.

But you know, you can certainly just hide a bunch of stuff on your website temporarily before you actually clean up the digital clu. So then once she had an offer that was built around nervous system healing for high, high achieving women, then she was able to really get clear about the repeatable system that would go along with that.

What were gonna be the steps, step one, step two, step three. How would she serve them? Exactly. You know, what kind of a process would they go through with her? And then guess what? Because she was so clear on that process. All of the technical work that goes along with it, all the funnel work and all the systems that, that support it and sell it, it was a lot easier to create those pages and that those, those, the copy and the.

The system that was gonna, you know, sell her her funnel essentially. So the email list, the wait list, the nurture sequences, the invitations, the, you know, onboarding emails, all that stuff flowed naturally because she was so clear. So within 45 days after we started having this conversation, she hired me to coach with her.

We turned a 90 person list into almost $10,000 in program sales. That was, that happened right away. I mean, she just got really clear, I mean, she'd been at this for a minute. So this was not her first, you know, week in business. So that, that was helpful. But we didn't use ads. We didn't spend any money on, you know, anything like that.

We didn't create a bunch of reels. She just got really aligned and targeted the people that she knew she could help, and gave them a very clear offer that they could not resist. So let's talk about the big idea here. Your purpose is so valuable. It's so important. It's what's gonna drive you when things get tough, right?

It's really important to be connected to something that, that you believe in, but purpose is not enough if you don't have a pathway. So we all start out with passion for the thing that we do. We're either just really talented and skilled at something and we wanna share that with the world, or we have, you know, had a personal experience that we have overcome and we wanna help others get, you know, collapse time and not spend so much energy getting stuck in those places.

But passion is not gonna pay your bills. What you need is a unit of sale, right? You need something that you can say, this is it. This is what I do, these are the steps, this is the process. This is how much I charge for that. So the truth is that if you're feeling stuck in like what we call the messy middle, where you're trying all the things and you're spinning a lot, and believe me when I tell you I spent a long time in the messy middle.

Uh, but you're not really seeing traction yet. Like you're not getting consistent signups for your lead magnet. You're not getting people coming to you saying, so and so told me about you. You're not getting reactions and traction when you either teach a free thing or, you know, offer something to people.

It's not because there's anything wrong with you, it's because your purpose. Is clear. People know that you're passionate and they love what you do, but it's not clear how you are going to serve them and help them get a specific experience or win or overcome a specific challenge. That specificity is the difference between a lot of time and money wasted and what can turn into literally like an overnight online cash machine, like when you get this right, it really, really works.

So I have identified three layers to this purposeful profit system, right? There's three layers of how you turn your purpose into a profit. And so I'm gonna share each of these three layers with you right now, and this is just gonna skim the surface a little bit. I actually have a more robust video training on this topic that I'm working on.

So this is the blueprint that helped Chloe and also dozens of other women that I have worked with finally connect the dots inside their marketing of their business. And when that full video training is. Available. Um, you can get it. You can be the first to get it. I will put a link to the wait list for this.

This training is honestly, I think probably the culmination of my best work. I'm very excited about it. So let's get into it. So the first layer is the spark. The spark is your story. Your passion, the reason why you care about this thing, right? Everybody has a different reason why they care about the thing they care about.

So when I started the juice truck way back in the day, my spark was that eating plant-based had transformed my life, like it helped me clear up fog, brain lose tons of weight, gain a ton of confidence, become far more successful, find a really powerful relationship. Eating plant-based was a powerful, transformational experience for me.

And so as a holistic health coach, I was hyper-focused on helping people eat plant-based. And the way that I wound up doing that as a business was I actually built a food-based business. But I also coach people on the side in tangent with that. So, but my story was really clear. I had gone from really unhappy and really unhealthy to living my best life.

And so it was easy for me to show and connect the dots 'cause my story was really clear. So the spark is your origin point. That's your heartbeat. That's what makes you want to get outta bed in the morning and help people with whatever you help them with. When this is very clear, your content feels really magnetic, right?

Because you can tell people. This is how it happened for me. This is what I went through and now this is how I teach it. When your story and your spark is fuzzy, if you're not really sure what the reason for what you're doing is it gets confusing. Your audience gets confused. You get confused. You're not sure what kind of content create to create, and I will tell you, I see this a lot when people abandon their own story, abandon their own purpose.

And start trying to copy people who they see as already successful. I think it's a pretty big and very common thing that that happens in online marketing is that, uh, because people want to achieve quick results and start making money right away, which is hard to do, they start to copy the messaging, the framework, and the storytelling even sometimes.

Of more successful people who are appear to be ahead of them in the game. I talk about this all the time. That is like a, that's a dead end. It's a dead end. You're gonna wind up at the end of a road that you can get no further. And so the reason is because you cannot sell somebody else's story or somebody else's form formula.

Honestly, you need to come from your spark. So when you start with your purpose, your story, and your star spark and your passion. You will always have endless content and endless truth to tell because it's based on your lived experience. So the spark is the first layer. You gotta have this, right? You gotta have your own passion and purpose and story.

The second layer is the struggle, okay? The struggle is. Essentially market demand. This is where you take that spark and you aim it at a specific pain point that people in your niche are actively seeking help with. So to determine what that could be, you wanna ask yourself, am I solving a problem that people know that they have?

And. As you'll probably know from, if you've listened to any of this podcast, this is where I'm gonna say we need to do market research. We need to know who's out there in the world, in the audience, in your niche, what are they dealing with? What are they struggling with? What are they going through? What's keeping them up at night?

It's so important that you understand that, not just in the general terms, but really, really specific stuff. So for Chloe, she had lived. This herself, right? She had come through a corporate, uh, reality, lived in, you know, working a corporate job. She knew exactly how much pressure there was to get, to meet deadlines, to make quotas.

She knew exactly how the, the office felt and what it, what it was like, and why people's nervous systems were, you know, fritzing out on the job and why women felt. Afraid to speak up and use their voice or step into their power, like she knew what their pain was, so she was able to articulate that very clearly, and that mattered a lot in the sales piece.

That comes later. So again, the first part is your purpose, wanting to help people with a certain specific thing. The second layer is the struggle. What are they going through that you can help them with that you understand really clearly? And. You can connect your purpose and your passion to their their struggle.

Something that is enough demand in the marketplace that people are gonna pay for it. Okay? And then the third layer to this is the system. The repeatable process by which you help them go from where they are now to where they're going to be after working with you. So coaches, service providers, hear me say this.

I am the person who resisted this with everything in my being. I, the artist in me cringed at the idea of, you know, formulating a process system. My ideas, you know, creating my signature plan or program. I was really, truly resistant to this at first. Um, and it wasn't actually my coaching program where I had this big epiphany to finally change my tune.

I actually learned the value of streamlining and specifying through the actual, through the juice bar, through the products on the juice bar menu. Because at one point we had like a million um, items on the menu, and I hired a high level consultant to come in and help us with operations and flow. And they advised us to trim the menu down from something like 45 items on the menu to only having five items on the menu.

And I was terrified to do this. I thought we were gonna lose all of our business, that our customers were gonna hate us. But actually what happened is after a couple of, you know, about a week of really cringey conversations with with customers, we actually wound up streamlining everything, simplifying everything, and making so much more money.

We tripled our sales. Over those six months. So it was a really big lesson that having a system that you can repeat really matters. It's how you save money and time. It's how you create better, higher quality offers. So I love that we arrived there eventually, but I was at first resistant to it, so, okay.

Anyways. Having a system is a game changer. This is gonna be a process that your clients can learn to trust and count on, and it's something that you can market on repeat without having to reinvent yourself every quarter or every six months. So just ask yourself, do I have a clear, scalable way to deliver results to people to deliver this transformation that I wanna get them?

That's the three layers. Okay. Just to repeat them, the three layers are your spark, your story, or your passion. The struggle, the market demand for something in your niche, and then the system, a repeatable process by which you serve your clients. And again, I'm working on an amazing video training to help you flush this out.

And so if you would like to get on the wait list for that, you can. Uh, click the link in the episode below and I will add your name to the wait list. And so here's a mini prompt for you to just take away from this episode today and just grab a piece of paper or do it in voice notes and ask yourself, what's my spark?

What's the struggle that I solve? And what's the system that I teach? And get yourself that clarity because that is the beginning of sustainable income. That's how you connect. Your purpose to a profit. You get clear on your spark, clear on their struggle, and then build a system that helps them go from where they are now to where they want to be.

Boom. That simple. And I know I'm making it sound easy, there's a lot of other stuff going on, but. All that being said, um, it works. It works if you work it. So if this is lighting you up to think about simplifying your processes, if you're nodding your head and thinking, yes, this is me. I need to clarify.

I'm all over the place. I'm trying everything. I'm throwing spaghetti against the wall. Um, then you are gonna love the full training that I'm working on. It's a, it's a little more robust. It's gonna give you a lot more detail on how to do this and how to get this process working for you. And it's gonna be done.

I mean, actually, to be honest with you, it's done, but I, I'm just putting together, you know, the online system so that I can deliver it to you smoothly. And so. Within the next week or so, I'll have that ready for you guys. So click the link, get on the wait list, and let me walk you through this framework in depth with real examples and, um, tools to help you map it out on your own.

You can dm me the word align on Instagram, and if you do that, I will know that you want this wait list and or click the link in the show notes and I will make sure to add your name to the wait list. And my hope is that, you know, I can help more people gain this clarity. And attach the thing that that gives you a real purpose in this world that lights you up to a profitable system, to a way for you to make, create new clients and make money consistently month after month.

That's what I want for you, and it's closer than you think. Uh, so let's get this work done and that my friend is all for this week. It's a shorty. A good one. So I hope that you loved it.
