EPISODE 053: Feeling Drained Despite Eating Healthy? Discover the 12 Life Areas That Truly Nourish You

Hey, Sparkling One. Let me ask you something. Are you feeling drained despite eating healthy? Have you ever been eating all the right foods, smoothies, salads, taking all your vitamins, but you still feel tired, stressed, or just off? You are not alone, and here's something that might surprise you. Health isn't only about what you are eating. It's also about what's eating at you.

Today, we're discussing something called primary foods, and no, this isn't about food groups or calories. These are the things that fuel you off your plate. Things like your relationships, your purpose, your movement, or your joy.

Tune in because this one shift in how you think about health could help everything start to feel lighter, clearer, and more energized.

Welcome to the Sparkling Life Coach podcast.

Hey, Sparkling One. Thanks for joining me today. I'm Dee Diaz, an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach. You know, the concept of Primary Foods comes from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, and here's the twist. Primary Foods are not about the food you eat; they're about the rest of your life, the things that actually feed your energy, mood, and motivation.

Think about it like this. You could be eating healthy every day, but if you're in a stressful relationship, if you hate your job, and you never take time for yourself, how healthy do you really feel, right? According to studies, more than 70% of health issues seen by doctors are related to lifestyle stress.

That tells us something important. Food is just one piece of the puzzle. Your life, your real, messy, beautiful life, is feeding you all the time. The question is, "Is it feeding you well?" So, let's talk about the 12 Areas of Primary Food. As I go through them, think about which ones feel strong for you and which ones might need some care.

Primary Food Number One is Relationships. Are your relationships positive, loving connections that feed your spirit? Or does conflict and disconnection drain you?

How about Primary Food Number Two, your Career? Are you doing meaningful work that boosts your energy? Or does that drag your health, making you feel stuck or unfulfilled?

Primary Food Number Three is Physical Activity. Movement and momentum is so important. Even things like walking your dog or dancing in your living room counts.

Primary Food Number Four is Spirituality. Whether it's prayer, meditation, gratitude, or tuning into something bigger that grounds you. This area is so important.

Primary Food Number Five is Home Cooking. You know, preparing meals with intention connects you to your body and your choices.

Primary Food Number Six is Home Environment. When you have a calm, clean space, it can instantly shift your stress levels.

Primary Food Number Seven is Finances. You don't need perfection. Just a sense of control and a plan can bring you peace.

Primary Food Number Eight is Education. When we're learning new things, it keeps our brains sharp and our confidence strong.

Primary Food Number Nine is Creativity. Art, music, writing, expressing yourself in any form, this recharges you.

Primary Food Number Ten is Social Life. Humans need connection. Isolation is hard on both our mind and our body.

Primary Food Number Eleven is Joy. Yes, fun is a part of your health, and when was the last time you laughed really hard?

Primary Food Number Twelve is Health. Your general wellness habits and how well you care for your body overall. All of these areas either give you energy or take it away.

So, let's say you're eating balanced meals every day, but you're barely moving. You're constantly stressed at work, and you haven't felt truly joyful in weeks. Even with the perfect diet, your body's under pressure. Stress affects everything from your gut to your hormones to your immune system.

That means if your life is out of balance, your health will be too. On the flip side, when these Primary Foods are being nourished, like when you're connecting with your loved ones, when you're doing work that you care about or enjoying time outside, your body feels lighter, your mood improves, and your energy flows more naturally because it's all connected.

So, let me give you some real-world examples of primary foods in action. Perhaps a parent who feels constantly exhausted may realize it's not from poor nutrition. It might be from never taking a break. Once you start carving out 15 minutes a day for yourself, you may find that your energy improves. Or it can be that you're someone stuck in a draining job, but then you find that adding a weekend hobby, like painting or gardening, lifts your mood and helps you sleep better. Or maybe you are a person who eats healthily, but you avoid social events. And then suddenly you begin attending a weekly meetup, and you find you start to feel more confident, happier, and motivated.

In all of these cases, the shift wasn't on the plate, right? It was in your daily life.

Some of the biggest primary food drains are toxic or strained relationships, overwhelm or boredom at work, lack of fun, joy, or creativity. Having a cluttered, stressful home and constant pressure from finances. When these things are left unchecked, these stressors can show up as fatigue, headaches, poor digestion, or even chronic illness. But when you address just one of them, it can create a ripple effect of better health.

So, would you like a few simple ways to nourish yourself today without changing a single thing on your plate? I have five for you.

First of all, try moving your body joyfully. Choose a type of movement that feels good, not forced.

Number Two, connect. Call a friend just to talk, not texting or calling. Actually speak to them even five minutes makes a difference.

Number Three, create something, draw, sing, cook, let yourself play again.

Number Four, simplify your space. Clear, just one small area of your home, and watch how it lifts your mood.

And Five, Reflect. Take two minutes to ask yourself, what do I need more of in my life right now? You'll see that these tiny steps add up in a big way.

Now let's bust a common myth. Many people think: “If I just eat healthy, everything else will take care of itself.

Uh, no, not exactly. And the reason I say this is because health is holistic. Your food matters, but so does your joy, your peace, your purpose, and your people. You can be eating all the greens in the world, but if you are feeling empty inside, your body is gonna feel that too.

So, here's your next step for this week.

Pick one area of Primary Food and do something small to nourish it today. Then, if you're watching this on YouTube, drop a comment and tell us: " Today, I'm feeding my life by..." and fill in the blank. Or, be a part of the Sparkling Life Holistic Health Hub community on Skool and drop your comment there.

I'll leave you the link in the show notes. And if this resonated with you, I'd love for you to share it and join our Sparkling Life Community, where we go deeper into these conversations and support each other in real, simple, powerful ways. That's where the real transformation begins, and we do it together.

Until next time, keep nourishing your life from the inside out.
